Back-to-Back NL West Champs: How Sweet It Is

I woke up this morning, exhausted from a long night of partying and with the taste of alcohol and cigars still in my mouth, the first beams of sunlight peeking through my window. And the best part was, when I rolled over in bed and looked to my right, there was the same beautiful girl I'd gone to bed with. The NL West Division trophy. And she's mine.

Six months after I started chasing her, she's mine. All mine.

As a blogger focused on one team, just as a beat reporter I assume, there is great pleasure in achieving a milestone like this. 22 teams will stop play after today (possibly 21 if Detroit and Minnesota match outcomes), but not the Dodgers, who earned their invitation to play another series, three games at least. Grinding through a season's worth of injuries, a suspension, and a slew of slumps, the 2009 Dodgers gritted out a well-deserved victory, dispatching visiting opponents with regularity in the first half, and dominating our divisional rivals all year long.

And though we at Sons of Steve Garvey contributed not one iota to the team's efforts on the field, we have written thousands of gripes and commendations and valentines and tirades throughout the campaign, following the team every step of the way, through all the ups and downs. So I can't help but feel a part of this victory, of this team accomplishment, having gone through the whole journey all year long.

So let me roll around in bed with this beautiful girl for a little while longer, please. I feel like I deserve it, too--as do all Dodger fans. And sure, I'll be chasing a different girl on Wednesday. But for now, it's the morning after with the queen of the prom, and I'mgoing to enjoy this morning after.

Hear, hear! Being right there at field side last night reinforced the notion that even though we, as fans, didn't swing a bat or throw or catch a ball, we do have a small but important part in every game of every season, and deserve to bask in success' Blue glow right there along with the players, coaches, management, and unseen others who make great seasons happen.

15-8.

Since there was some discussion recently of 6-4-2's alleged less-than-favorable coverage of Dodgers (versus Angels), I've been reading it more than I usually do. Their Dodgers clinch post sure doesn't lend much credence to the school of thought that says they have similar fervor for the Dodgers:

NL West seems like a begrudging afterthought, and oh yeah, Kershaw kind of did some stuf last night.

@Dusty

I don't know if Rob has put in his $.02, but I doubt he would dispute that 6-4-2 is weighted somewhat to Angels coverage. I got no problem with that, it's still a pretty good read.

Plus there's been less in the NL west to be favorable about until last night.

Mr. C-

No, I totally agree with all that. It was just brought up the other day by someone (not me) and so when I browsed over there this morning and saw a decidedly muted post on the clinch, I thought it was reflective of some of the previous comments about the slant. But yeah, it's a good read overall and I like what he does with it (besides the previously noted bias!).

Did Mrs. Sax have to sleep on the futon?

OT

Mascherano looking to make his start the exception, not the rule.

Bigtime composure for Anelka to slip that goal in. There's more to come from both sides, though, I think.

I think you meant to say "21 teams" if the Twinkies and Tigers tie.

Any word on who manages today? I'd say either Ausmus or Loretta, with Loretta being the favorite.

That's a good guess, MLASF. Always love that bit.

@Dusty - It really is fun to watch. I remember last year when Nomar was the manager against 'Frisco.

Dear Mr. Broxton:

Please pitch during the upcoming playoffs like you did last night. You were money.

Love,
Dusty

ps-There's cake if you pitch well.

Lucas celebrated the win like I'm sure most of us did, by crying, eating, pooping, and falling asleep.

I like 6-4-2, even if it covers the Angels with more frequency and positive bias than the Dodgers. I still learn things when I read it. And it works for me.

Thanks for the catch on the 23 games, my error. Corrected.
