The Pantheon of Post-1988 Dodger Playoff Win Heroes, Part 5

The Pantheon needs a little bit of reconstruction here (honestly, I couldn't find the old file, so this is even more of a hackjob than this hallowed hall deserves). But I had to get this up today....

Thank you, Matt Kemp, for giving the team confidence, the crowd life, and the Dodgers the lead with your two-run blast in 2009 NLDS Game 1!

Thank you, Matt Holliday and your nuts, for misplaying a sure final out off the bat of James Loney in 2009 NLDS Game 2, prolonging the bottom of the ninth inning and ushering in a parade of Dodger hitters who made sure that final out never came!

Thank you, Mark Loretta, for hitting the greatest hit of your career with a walkoff bases-loaded single to secure victory in 2009 NLDS Game 2, and then handling the post-game interviews with poise and humility like a total pro!

GO DODGERS!

who would have thought mark loretta would be on this list, im still buzzing from last night.

in a related story i was in a 50 team beer pong tournament last night. in a parallel to the dodgers, no one thought we could win, everyone overlooked us and sure enough, at 2:30 am eastern time we were crowned champions beating last years winners. it was a hell of a night to say the least.

Funny as hell.

I was watching the replay of the Shot Felt Around the Nuts with a friend of mine who is a former big-leaguer (AAA with the Mariners). He said Holliday muffed the catch when he turned his mitt when the ball was in mid air. As he said, ball above the waist, mitt up. Ball below, mitt down. Maybe the ball really did "handcuff" him and he was hit "midships" (as Vin said) as a result; either way I'm still glowing from that finish.

I was also surrounded by Angel fans coming in from thier drubbing of the BoTox. Almost universally, they called the Dodgers "lucky." I told them, "Go up 2-0, then come see me."

And, Adam WAH-inright; suck it!

I don't know any Angels fans only. Everybody I know is a Dodgers fan. Some of them also like the Angels. Where do you live, rbnlaw? I'm in LA county (well, when I'm in SoCal).

exactly right rb. i was talking about that with my dad this morning. When you lose a ball in the lights or the towels or the glow of James Loney, you would flinch or hesitate trying to pick the ball back up. Holliday just muffed it, plain and simple

Speaking of the Angels, just scored tickets to the Angels/Sox game tonight. The playoff smorgasbord continues.

@fanerman

There are definitely some hard-core halo fans down in O.C. that don't like the Dodgers much at all, going back to the minor league angels days and when they shared Dodger Stadium.

@fanerman:
I live in the middle of Anaheim. Back when the Angels played here, I actually liked them. When they moved to Los Angeles, I lost track of them.

Thursdays are the nights the wife and I go to Angelo's Drive-In for date night (http://www.angeloshamburgers.com/index.html). The place is usually full of Angels' fans after a home game (only a mile from the stadium where they used to play; don't know where in LA they play now). I can tell you that Angels' fans have a HUGE inferiority complex when it comes to their team and try to stick it to Dodger fans by making fun of Manny or Fox ownership. Yes, many are that ill-informed.

No Belliard in the pantheon??? Loretta never even comes on-deck if Belliard doesn't deliver.

I demand justice!

Don't make Belliard the next Mike Davis. Who? Exactly!

karina and I decided the proper term is "nads".

Holliday's got NARDS?!

Tim- I think that Russell Martin would be the Mike Davis...and I guess Andre Ethier would be Mickey Hatcher...and Holliday would be Canseco? Dunno who LaRussa would be...

I just made the pantheon my background on the work computer.

Hope no one minds the "Holliday's Nuts" entry.

Andrew -

Holliday as Conseco is genius. Aside from the HR, a game changing double off the groin is tantamount to giving up a HR off the head.

There needs to be a pantheon of body part baseball bloopers.

Wasn't Holliday's Nuts the theme to Vacation?
