Game 140 Thread: Sept. 8 vs. D'backs, 6:40p

Chad Billingsley (12-9, 3.86) vs. Billy Buckner (2-6, 8.29).

COMMENTS: When Billingsley last pitched on Wednesday vs. the Diamondbacks, he went through four scoreless innings before giving up four runs in the fifth inning, which stuck him with the loss when the Dodgers' offense could only muster one run in "support". Joe Torre was nonplussed, however, telling the press afterwards that he wasn't worried because he thought Billingsley had improved mechanics.

Despite Torre's explanation, Billingsley's third straight loss and tenth straight start in which he didn't make it to the seventh inning was enough to get all the local colmunists frothing at the mouth again about how ace-less the Dodgers are. The team could easily give those pundits a much-needed tune-up by firing up their offensive engines and taking Buckner for a spin, letting Bills focus on firing all of his pistons and maintaining top speed.

And that's about all the automobile references I've got, since I don't know cars very well, but I encourage you guys to go with this while I'm idling. (Speaking of idling, AccuScore has both the Rockies (Jason Marquis) beating the Reds (5.2 projected runs to 4.2) and the Giants (Timmah Lincecum) beating the Padres (4.8 to 3.1). We'd better come through today with a win.)

UPDATE 4:40p: Thanks to Eric Stephen of TBLA for the headsup that Lincecum is scratched with back spasms; Madison Bumgarner gets the start for the Giants. Take that, AccuScore!

I thought Wolf was the ace? To be honest, if he were the "ace" of the staff heading into the postseason, that wouldn't concern me too much. He's got a lot of experience and knows the game well. Plus if he's facing the Phillies, even better to have him start Game 1.

Eric Stephen said...

It took me a bit to get why that picture was used, but well played, Sax.

Also, it appears Lincecum may have been scratched tonight for SF (sore back) and 20-year old Madison Bumgarner has been recalled to start in his place.

Kyle Baker said...

Excellent info. Thanks, Eric Stephen.

Eric Stephen said...

Also, Tulo and Ian Stewart have been scratched as well.

The NL West, where they're dropping like flies!!!

Kyle Baker said...

Gentlemen, start your engines!

JuanLove said...

Madison Bumgarner already?

they're rushing him arent they?

karina said...

@Eric Stephen as long there are not Dodgers flies dropping...

NicJ said...

I'm so tired of hearing the word Ace.

Besides we probably have like three kings and a couple of jacks, a full house ain't a bad hand right?

Loney Fan said...

As long as we don't have any queens.

Paul said...

I hear a some antibiotics and cortizone cream will clear up Madison Bumgarner in about a week.

Steve Sax said...

"Madison to the main stage! Madison, up next on the main stage!"

Steve Sax said...

@Eric Stephen, thanks for the scratchy Lincecum info!

QuadSevens said...

With the mention of an "Ace" and Nic J's comment about us having a "full house" how can I not leave a comment on this thread?

With Billingsly, Kershaw, Broxton, and Kemp we've got Quad Kings for future use. These guys will pull through.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

It worked yesterday, so here I go:

Just win baby, just win.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

And will you guys finish up the assassin game so I can get Spock back to his rightful place.

Steve Sax said...

neeebs, do you have a realtime update of who died in AC today? I did a quick scan but only found Orel's corpse.

Kyle Baker said...

I think Orel was the lone man down.

Kyle Baker said...

If I have a scratchy Lincecum, can I just take some of the stuff that gets rid of a Madison Bumgarner?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Here's a recap:

FB sticks his neck out and prays for cover from RBN. RBN obliges and FB, practicing the "honor code" does not double cross RBN and lets his comment float.

In the meantime, Orel crawls out from under the rock right at the bewitching hour of 3:00pm, only to have GLG pierce his heart before the door shut down at 3:01.

You have been updated.

Xeifrank said...

Didn't know you guys were big fans of the Imagination Movers.
vr, Xei

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Xei: Don't tell anyone, but the SOSG are the Imagination Movers. I think Sax is Scott.

Steve Sax said...

@XF, those guys do look a lot like the Imagination Movers! Nice call.

But no, they're the guys from Brampton Auto Repair in Ontario, Canada: Carmen, Sebastian, and Mario!

@Neeebs, I want to be the dorky guy on the right with the cowboy hat (of the Imagination Movers, that is). Which one is that? And why would you know, anyway?

rbnlaw said...

Neeebs,
Excellent recap. Accurate and insightful.
And don't think I didn't get the Genesis reference, either.

OK, who came up with Madison Bumgarner? Tomorrow, starting for J. Sanchez will be Oliver Clothesoff?

rbnlaw said...

Why do the Imagination Movers remind me of The Wiggles?

And damn me for knowing who the friggin Wiggles are.

Gagne's lucky glasses said...

Hey RB, it could be down to you and me after tomorrow...just sayin'

Blake is out another game, it looks like that Belliard pick up is genius and Blake's "strain" is a little more serious

I need Amanda Hugginkiss!

rbnlaw said...

Could well be just us cold blooded killahs, GLG.
Nice snipe today. Just as I predicted.

Hey, take that Nostradamus!

Kyle Baker said...

RB, the way Blogger spaced your phrase:

"Could well be just us cold blooded killahs, GLG.
Nice snipe today. Just as I predicted."

Either sounds like a Nostradamus quatrain or a really weird haiku.

Gagne's lucky glasses said...

@RB - I work in Orange...we should grab a drink after work sometime

rbnlaw said...

And here I thought I was the lone survivor behind the Curtain (Orange).

@DB:
I'm very lyrical, like Vin.

Kyle Baker said...

RB, the lyrical gangsta.

(I tried that sentence substituting in "Vin" but just couldn't make it work.)

Gagne's lucky glasses said...

Yeah, there are a couple of us left to fight the disease that is Angels fans here in the OC

Fred's Brim said...

i thought Bills pitched well last time out but was unlucky more than anything. He gave up the double and then either missed to or lost a challenge to a relatively unknown hitter. The other two runs were crap, some wimpy ground balls combined with bad fielding. If he pitches that way again, I think we have a really good chance tonight

Steve Sax said...

Colorado already has a 1-0 lead thanks to a EYoungJr double and Helton sac fly in the bottom of the first.

Rox Marquis has 5 Ks through three frames, but the Reds' Maloney is holding his own with only three hits and 1 ER with 1K (and 37 pitches to Marquis' 42).

Steve Sax said...

Top 4 in Colorado: Joey Votto walks with one out, then is sacrificed to second. But Scott Rolen fans to end the threat.

Mid-4, Rox up 1-0. And it's almost time for Dodger baseball!

Josh S. said...

Furcal grounds out AGAI...

WHAAAAAAAAAAT?

Steve Sax said...

top 5, still 1-0 Rox

Steve Sax said...

I don't know why I keep kidding myself into thinking the Reds can actually beat the Rockies.

I feel like the guy who watches King Kong vs. Godzilla 14 times, but still thinks Godzilla could pull of an upset the next visit to the theatre.

Fred's Brim said...

man i can't stand the DeeBax announcers. Grace is just another small market schlub color man

damn that was hit well

Steve Sax said...

Was that Kemp fly out as deep as Gameday said it was (at the wall)?

Fred's Brim said...

i was a Godzilla fan when I was a kid and it always made me sad when he lost to Mothra and King Kong :(

Fred's Brim said...

just about, to the deepest part of the field, near that weird overhang

Josh S. said...

HOLY CRAP WE SCORED IN THE FIRST!!!!

JuanLove said...

93!

Fred's Brim said...

attaboy Dre! another one clubbed, this one found the gap! 1-0 good guys!

Fred's Brim said...

Buckner got lucky on that one

Fred's Brim said...

damn, Loney hit that one pretty well too

Fred's Brim said...

damn 2nd and 3rd, nobody out

Bills' fastballs are up so far

NicJ said...

Is it the sixth inning already?

Erin said...

Well, this sure is a good start.

Steve Sax said...

Second and third with no outs. Oh, this is not good.

Somewhere, Plaschke cackles.

Steve Sax said...

Ball doesn't look that deep on Gameday; why couldn't Ethier nail the man at home?

Fred's Brim said...

sac fly from Upton, 1-1, runner tags up to 3rd, Mark Reynolds with another sac fly, 2-1 bad guys :/

NicJ said...

Damn those dbacks are the efficient sac flys.

Steve Sax said...

f'ing a, yet another sacrifice to Andre.

I blink my eyes, it's 2-1 Snakes.

Fred's Brim said...

Saxy, they were near the warning track, plenty deep

Steve Sax said...

Come on, Chad, show some goddamn umph from those thighs

NicJ said...

Damn iPhone auto correct

Fred's Brim said...

d-backs definitely like the sack

Steve Sax said...

@Fred's Brim, thanks for the update. Gameday is not so precise, i would say.

Fred's Brim said...

crap, another hit

cmon Bills, finish this off

Steve Sax said...

y kant chad get an out

Steve Sax said...

halle frickin lujah

2-1 after 1

Steve Sax said...

i'm going to the other side. Lates.

Fred's Brim said...

there's the popup from Young and Bills is out of it. go to the next inning with a clean slate

Fred's Brim said...

Saxy, i hear yeah, but it's almost preferable to listing to the snakes announcers

NicJ said...

I guess it's good to get his bad inning out of the way early.

Fred's Brim said...

keep taking against this bum

JuanLove said...

i dont want to be senile or anything, but i kinda wish Chad was the one to run into a wall rather than Kershaw

o.O

Fred's Brim said...

O with the broken bat hit!

Wicks said...

Bills is starting to freak me out, I don't think he's going to turn it around.

JuanLove said...

who didnt see that coming?

Fred's Brim said...

dangit Russ with the DP

NicJ said...

Russ is trying to catch andre for most gidp's on the team.

Kyle Baker said...

GIDP

Buzz killer, Russ.

Fred's Brim said...

shite - Matt made a nice try, but it's a bloop leadoff double

Fred's Brim said...

i am still with Bills. When I see him as our starter vs most other pitchers, I think Win

NicJ said...

Awesome

NicJ said...

That wasn't interference?

Fred's Brim said...

Allen came with the trow and would have score anyway :/

Buckner made a good bunt but was inside the baseline, should have been called out

Steve Sax said...

3-1 snakes, rox up 2-0.

Fred's Brim said...

tough luck inning there

Fred's Brim said...

so Bills gave up his hits, then had his bad luck inning, so he should settle in and cruise for a while now.

the bats just have to get in gear and get him a lead

Fred's Brim said...

thanks, bucky

Steve Sax said...

Furcal you are almost as bad as Martin

Fred's Brim said...

shitshitshit another DP, this time from Raffy

Fred's Brim said...

what the hell? getting no luck tonight

NicJ said...

Well if we continue our pattern and lose today, that means we will beat Haren to tomorrow.

JuanLove said...

giants scored

now bumgarner can throw a no no vs SD

Fred's Brim said...

great DP, Bills

time to get you some runs

Fred's Brim said...

haha Anquan Boldin at the game in the front row, wearing a Dodger hat

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Fly-by: Bills looks like crapola.

Kyle Baker said...

Would you please, for the love of god, start the god damned scoring?

JuanLove said...

Kouz homered

1-1

Kyle Baker said...

SD just equalised.

Fred's Brim said...

unreal

JuanLove said...

FMD

NicJ said...

Christ, are we going for the dp record?

JuanLove said...

^(my Dodgers)

Fred's Brim said...

keep it going, Bills

JuanLove said...

i said Kouz homered, my bad it was Headley.

Rowand just went deep, 2-1 SF

NicJ said...

Good thinking o dog. No more dp's

Steve Sax said...

Giants and Rockies now both up 2-1

NicJ said...

That would of been a dp ball.

Fred's Brim said...

*sigh*

Fred's Brim said...

arrrgh! i can't listen to the dbacks announcers any more

Steve Sax said...

There must be a contest fof which Dodgers can compete to see who can hit into the most double plays.

During this game alone.

Kyle Baker said...

There's more DP mentioned in this thread than in a Vivid Video catalog.

Fred's Brim said...

hehe

Steve Sax said...

Rox are gonna win. It's kinda sad when I can look at Marquis and chock up the win, then look at Bills and hope for the best.

Fred's Brim said...

Bills, throw a goddam strike to these bums

Fred's Brim said...

way to stem the tide, Bills

Fred's Brim said...

we havent had a late inning comeback in a while

Fred's Brim said...

Kouz has tied it up for SF

Fred's Brim said...

shite

Kyle Baker said...

Was watching earlier on GameDay, so just now Tivoing thru the video. Was Bills throwing BP in the first inning or what? That's what it looked like in fast forward. Our SPs just don't do the first inning well.

Fred's Brim said...

for SD I mean

NicJ said...

I'm starting to pick up a pattern.

Kyle Baker said...

JuanLove at 7:48 PM:

Now you're correct.

Kyle Baker said...

What is that pattern, NicJ?

Kyle Baker said...

Or were you quoting an old Star Trek, NicJ?

NicJ said...

A walk, double play.

O dog broke that pattern by stealing second.

Another pattern is alternating wins and losses. When is the last time we went on a winning or losing streak.

Kyle Baker said...

BTW, Star Trek ep #1 aired on this date, Sept. 8, 1966.

Fred's Brim said...

Monday is picking up Bills' curveball delivery from the booth

NicJ said...

Chad almost had a 123 inning. Let's see how he reacts.

Fred's Brim said...

no pitcher hits please

Kyle Baker said...

Cards won, Phils won.

Fred's Brim said...

or walks

Fred's Brim said...

unbelievable

i hate this so much

NicJ said...

Bills just can't get out of the 6th without giving up a run.

Kyle Baker said...

When does the comeback begin, again?

Orel said...

Easy there, FB.

Fred's Brim said...

sorry

NicJ said...

You have to feel sorry for manny after watching that at bat. I have never seen him look that frustrated.

rbnlaw said...

Hey gang, it's official.
Our men in Blue suck. This could be the low point of the season. A dude who shares a name with a former, albeit infamous for other reasons, Dodger, is making our once-feared line-up look like any team facing the Chula Vista all-stars.

Double plays. Thou art our bane.

Fred's Brim said...

AZ broadcast is showing Buckner getting his grip on his knuckle curve, he wasnt even hiding it

NicJ said...

Loney gets a single. Can anyone guess what's gonna happen now?

karina said...

It ain't over 'till is over, gentlemen.

If i leave you alone, you start getting pessimistic and using foul language.

Fred's Brim said...

a DP in 5 of the 7 innings

are we cursed?

NicJ said...

call me Nicstradamus

Kyle Baker said...

@ Karina

"If i leave you alone, you start getting pessimistic and using foul language."

Mrs. Dusty says that to me at least twice a day.

Fred's Brim said...

thanks, Karina

NicJ said...

It was almost 6 dp's

Fred's Brim said...

keep us close, James

Fred's Brim said...

i miss the free swinging dbacks

karina said...

Outstanding Mr. McDonald.

Kyle Baker said...

Before the season started, I presciently said to Mrs. Dusty and sis-in-law: The thing to watch this season is whether we can LIFT the ball. GIDP is one of our achilles heels. We have to learn to lift the ball out of the infield. If we fly out, we fly out. Or of the sac fly, even better. But over the season, we can't ground weakly to an infielder for a DP.

Oh, how I wish I would have been way off base with that masterful insight.

NicJ said...

Crap a single! Here we go again folks.

Fred's Brim said...

haha so close

Fred's Brim said...

there's still a chance though :)

NicJ said...

You think if furcal ground out they will try to turn two out of habit now?

Steve Sax said...

Why are they teasing us into thinking we will rally and win here

It's cruel

Fred's Brim said...

Madson had to clean up a mess for Lidge in the 9th inning of the Phils win

Steve Sax said...

Thank God Raffy didn't K there

Fred's Brim said...

we got some action!

NicJ said...

Why do they do this crap to me.

Josh S. said...

Vinny puts it all in perspective:

"You didn't think it would be easy, did you? Not knowing the Dodgers history."

karina said...

M.Kemp, in play (runs)

tell me it's a HR.

karina said...

I'll take this RBI single. Lift your spirits, here comes Ethier.

JT_Dutch said...

Well it's like Vin was reading my mind when he said ... "You didn't think it was gonna be easy, did you??? You know the history of this team. It's never easy."

So true, so true.

Fred's Brim said...

karina, no HR. Matt wants Andre to hit the homer

NicJ said...

I was thinking about that quote too josh. It's like he already knows how the story ends.

Fred's Brim said...

attaboy Dre

NicJ said...

How did that ball make it through?! It was slow as hell.

JT_Dutch said...

Looks like Josh beat me to it.

NicJ said...

Hopefully manny doesn't try to
do to much here.

NicJ said...

Can loney rediscover his clutchabilty?

Kyle Baker said...

LoneyFan, this is your time.

NicJ said...

Yes he can!!!

Now let's go for the lead!!!!

Fred's Brim said...

woah loney with the slice!

karina said...

Rancho Ardiendo for King James: in play (runs)

Fred's Brim said...

one time, Ronnie, one time....

karina said...

Still Rancho Ardiendo, go boys!

Paul said...

Hi fives all! And now I am enjoying listening to these crap Arizona announcers.

Fred's Brim said...

wooopwoop!!

NicJ said...

How fucking lucky was that!!!

Kyle Baker said...

Can I get a wooopwoop?

Oh, thanks FB.

Fred's Brim said...

cmon bullpen, shut these guys down

Fred's Brim said...

DB, you can always count on me for a woop or two

NicJ said...

Hopefully the dbacks are demoralized and just roll over.

Crap! Guess not.

karina said...

Is it me or Miguel Montero does well against the Dodgers?. He does well with Aguilas too.

Fred's Brim said...

throw strikes, HCK

karina said...

Former Aguilas player who did well pinch running. Hate when my teams collide in this way.

Fred's Brim said...

oh no not Byrnsie

cmon guys, hold this

Kyle Baker said...

Come on, HCK. Let's get these blankety-blanks out.

Fred's Brim said...

Does Roberts play for the Denver Nuggets in the winter?

Kyle Baker said...

SD ties it up at 3.

NicJ said...

Pads just tied it up.

NicJ said...

2 quick 4 me db

Steve Sax said...

Kuo going all the way here with Ryan Roberts

Fred's Brim said...

woah mama way to stay with it, Belli2!

Steve Sax said...

Belliard using his Belly for the stop!!!

NicJ said...

Exhale.

karina said...

I want to see that play.

Steve Sax said...

Jackie Johnson sighting!

And the Dodgers are surprisingly up 5-4. I should turn off the tv in disgust more often!

Steve Sax said...

Let's turn to the next page.

Paul said...

I hope this was the low point and then the turning point of this funk that seems to have been going on since 1979.
