Chad Billingsley (12-10, 4.05) vs. Ross Detwiler (0-6, 5.80).
DODGERS' MAGIC NUMBERS: 2 (to make playoffs), 6 (to win division)
COMMENTS: This may not be Chadley's last chance to redeem his 2009 season, but it's his best chance. A poor performance by Bills against the Glass Joe of the majors would just about ruin his chances of starting the in playoffs. However, a strong performance wouldn't necessarily guarantee him a start, and a so-so performance would just leave us all frustrated. Hopefully the bats will follow their cue from yesterday's drubbing and provide Mr. Thighs with some run support, allowing Chad to Punch-Out!! the Nads!

That said, this is the best opportunity for Bills to work on getting ahead in counts, honing his control, and trusting his catcher.
Oh, one thing I forgot to mention in yesterday's Bob Marley themed GT: Song for the first dance at the rbnlaw wedding?
Three Little Birds. Perfect song for a couple who were both unemployed and living in a rent-controlled apartment in 1991.
haha, nads...

Go Nads!
Tres parajitos wedding! Cool.
Am I supposed to remember my first dance song?
Hmmmmm...it was "Love Me Tender," I do believe.
"Ladies and gentlemen, Glass Joe!"
I wish I had a margarita for every time I heard that from the old video game.
DB with the new drinking game! That's good.
I'm still at work and can't drink.
That's bad.
O-Dawg back in the line-up and Beard gets a day off to trim his beard, which has reached Chuck Norris proportions.
Chuck Norris...hehehe. I like it. How about resting Manny too - or wait until we clinch.
remember when people were calling billingsley the ace?
now he can't even crack the rotation.
Has anyone here beaten Punch Out back in the day? I think I got to Tyson a couple of times, but was never able to beat him. Grr...
I can't stay for the game, some friends decided to show a movie they made so it's a social life clashing with baseball fandom, however i'll try to make it.
Please, don't get pessimistic for a GIDP with runners on base in the first third of the game, curse and complain as you want but try to focus on the positive. Bills is gonna win this game, the Dodgers will win the game and if the force is with us, even the Rockies will lose.
Also, if you don't mind, comment profusely so i can get a better idea when i get home and read the Gameday. Please?
thank you very much in advance! :)
karina doesn't ask much does she?
You should've posted that before ken's assessment of the State of the Bills.
Karina, I will do all of that except for the part about nut cursing. Dammit.
AC-
Same here. I got to Tyson but am still unrequited on beating him. I think if they made a new version with today's Tyson, I could take him.
Hud...son? I'm not familiar.
Are we winning yet?
GLG-
Yes.
So Furcal is saving all his stolen bases until now.
I think he has like 5 or 6 in the past week
looking good so far
but its not how he starts the games thats the problem
its when he gets to the 2nd or 3rd time around the lineup
"Adam Dunn strikes out swinging."
No doubt.
Chadley, with 2Ks in the first inning, plus a one-pitch groundout.
1-0 Dodgers after one
I think we can all agree that Rafael Furcal is coming around.
Ken, FWIW, I like your new blog layout too. And I had no idea you worked at Giant Robot. Love that store, and you may have caught our references to the urban vinyl scene before.
I'll try and work that theme into a future GT, but in the meantime, keep up the good work.
8-pitch inning for Detwiler. We're not very patient tonight in the 5-6-7 holes.
@Mr LA SF, Furcal is indeed coming around...to score!
Rack up another K
Chads AAA rehab start is looking good so far.
bills straight dealing tonight
5 Punch Outs for Bills through 3!
@ Sax
thanks~ i actually just work for the magazine. too bad the silverlake store closed~!
take some pitches, please
cram it, Guzman!
I open up my e-mail to look for anything interesting. Here's what I find:
"Paste invites you to Feel Your Boobies"
Is that a free event, MLASF?
anybody else have trouble signing in to post? I was getting an error when trying to post and log in at the same time. I was able to log in at the blogger site and then come back here
Angels had a tough time of it today v Yank-mes. Per B. Duran:
"Angels strike out 15 times and strand 13. 0-10 with runners in scoring position."
FB, Blogger has been jacked the fuck up since last evening.
Let's see some Road Loney.
where do they sell bigelow green tea?
its go time russ
i am blaming the the Nads - their play has rubbed off
Russ gets the bases loaded with 2 outs. Dont be afraid to take a walk
dukes has a canon
Eh. A run's a run. I'll take it.
damn - great throw and tag
I just had some green tea with lunch. It wasn't Bigelow. I have NO idea where to actually find it. Other than breaking into Joe's stash, of course.
went to the market, nope
7-11, nope
where is this magical tea?
I've found Bigelow at Ralph's. It does exist.
In modern marketing, the knuckleheads buy a zillion ads, get the right person to promo their widget, then forget to tell you where you can actually buy the stuff. Lovely.
@ db
ditto
theres goes bills' perfect game
Bills overthrowing a little, Russ to set him straight
What am I, chopped liver? I just said I found the stuff. I can provide evidence, if necessary.
Here is the first speed bump. Come on Chad get through this.
working that low and outside corner. ump not giving it to him though. 2 on, 2 out
MLASF, i believe you
Did you say something, MLASF? *Looks around room* ;-)
there it is - great shutdown
One would think that green tea would have been more appropriately mentioned in yesterday's rasta-themed thread.
I think MLASF said the thought the Nads were a bad baseball team, and I, for one, believe him
Thank you, FB. At least somebody can appreciate me (looks sternly at Dusty).
@ db
i was at 7-11 on monday and there was a big fat white dude in a rasta hat~
I've been doing some research on Bills. According to Baseball Reference, his line with runners on base is .304/.378/.414
It's even worse with a runner on first (no rhyme intended): .352/.404/.476
hmm that was close
An over-the-glasses stern look, to top it all off! I'm sufficiently shamed.
Ken-
That wasn't me you saw at 7-11.
@ db
i would hope not~
Circle K?
Nice, Bills!
yikes that was efficient
For comparison's sake, here's our ace, Randy Wolf's line with runners on: .240/.304/.406
sure its the nads, but bills is impressive, this many Ks against any major league team is impressive
if he has a no-hitter or a 1-hitter going into the 7th or 8th
would u let him finish the game?
depends on the pitch count and only if its a no-no
Belly 2.0: Suck it, Fangraphs
if they keep swinging at the first pitch, it could be a CG
Manny's teetering on .300
hmm I wish Dre could have gotten Belli2 over before that grounder from Manny
Loney with another AB w RISP
Time for Road Loney
haha rick monday is so funny
charlie was saying the marlins is playing at whatever they are calling their ballpark these days
rick monday said "empty"
Road Loney Lives!
Road Loney!
oof that was rotten
3-0 good guys
Can we make a giant blow-up of an opposing team's outfield and paste it onto the hitter's eye area on Dodger Stadium? Make Loney think he's in Chicago or something.
yay
let celebrate with some champanya
i mean tapatio hot sauce
Marleens take a 3-2 lead over the Fils
@ db
u cant make the ball fly at night at dodger stadium
blowup isnt gonna help loney
haha good idea DB, maybe get them painted on some glasses that he only uses to hit with
Don't dis King James, or you'll pay.
Way to go FJL!
@ Ken
Then can we re-schedule games to be day games?
@ Ken
ps- Other people can make the ball fly at night.
Grow some ivy on the outfield wall, maybe some faux brick?
keep it going, Chadley
@ db
yes but loney isnt other people~
give him whatever ethier is drinking
because he cant be retired at home
Ethier is drinking Bigelow green tea, in all likelihood. He knows where to get it.
[So does MLASF, for the record.]
damn it charlie
dont jinx him
make these guys swing, Bills
Ahhhh, the dread 6th inning for Bills.
Let's get through the accursed 5th inning, Chad. It's smooth sailing from there on out.
*6th
Damn fat fingers.
oh bills not running to first
i hope that doesnt hurt
i know everyone loves loney,
but i would have really have loved Dunn in Dodger blue
cmon Bills, finish this off
son of a b
That was Bills going downt the toilet
um, i think he was sitting on that pitch
Billingsley is psychologically damaged. He knows he's screwed up in the sixth inning many times, so now he gets to the sixth inning and it's probably all he thinks about, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
This is madness.
No, Erin. THIS IS SPARTA!
You have to admit, you left it open.
@ erin,
i disagree, i think it is more likely he tires in the 6th
God damn! I looked away for 2 seconds and now this. This went from best case scenario to, well, not necessarily worst, but like Erin said, he really now has a mentla hangup in the 6th and this is NOT going to help. Hell, now I have a mental hangup in the 6th.
damndamndamn Bills, you were doing so well :( it was only one pitch, but such bad timing
I'm about to violate about 4 of Karina's admonishments when she weighed in pre-game.
That's just it though, FB. It wasn't one pitch. He walked the leadoff man, he failed to cover first on Guzman's grounder, and he walked Dunn with two outs. That one pitch to Zim was just the capper.
agreed, koufax. that ball was way inside. maybe he's tipping his pitches
Rox underway.
Come on, guys! We're pitching against this 'tard called Tyler Clippard. He should be doing my taxes with a name like that.
Hey he's pitching a one-hitter for god sakes!!!!
*sarcasm alert*
I don't see how he could tire in the sixth. Particularly tonight, when he had not thrown that many pitches going into the inning. He's a professional athlete--if there's something making him tired after throwing 65-70 pitches, then that needs to be determined because there's something wrong there.
Well,
It's not the stellar performance we all hoped for, but giving him a chance to clean up his own mess might be beneficial.
Yet again, it's not HR, but the walks that are the sticky wicket. Z is not exactly some chump, but if its a solo shot, we just brush it off.
@Erin - You didn't look at my stats, did you?
Bills out, can't get the W. Damn, I was really ready to celebrate.
How will the SoSG poll turn on this news?
SOSG says, "And a so-so performance would leave us all just frustrated."
Give me a F-R-U-S-T-R-A-T-E-D!
I just got here, so, no, I haven't looked at any stats. I just hate Chad's body language any time anything goes wrong. I don't see how he could avoid realizing what inning it is and what he's done in that inning all year.
I've looked at the stats now. That's pretty miserable, and not exactly the mark of an ace.
Well, here's more staty goodness: Bills's OPS in the sixth is at a whopping .926
Totally, Erin. If he is tired at that point, then it's serious enough to say, maybe this guy isn't a SP and is better used in the future as a middle reliever. (And we saw how that went!)
I'm not advocating for this or anything, but just agreeing that he ought to be able to go longer and if he can't, that's something that needs to be seriously evaluated.
this is a quality start
i still go with the JOBA style that NYY is employing
have him pitch 4 innings to start, then have long relief
works for the yanks
I just think everyone is freaking out over bills and while it is warranted to some degree, we do not need to consider it a disaster or a lost cause. he pitched so well tonight for most of the game, he had a great first half. is he going to be an ace? maybe not, but there is no need to start calling him a Rick Ankiel headcase just yet.
With runners in scoring position, the slugging isn't so bad (it's in the 300's). But with RISP and two outs, the OPB is in the .400's
MLASF, you are right, the fielding mistake is inexcusable, but he got penalized for the one meatball he threw. It wasnt a great inning by any means, but the 4th was the same and he got out of that one. I guess I am not done with him because of what feels to me more like bad timing. I really liked what he did tonight and am upset that it was wasted
seriously, it was his fault for putting himself into that situation
if he ran down to first to cover, he would have gotten out of the inning
if he didn't walk dunn, then he prolly would have been ok
then 3 run homer
thats 3 mistakes in one inning
@ Ken
It works for Joba because Yank-mes score 114 runs to support his 3 or 4-inning, 4 runs given up outings.
Let's not fuck around and lose this game, most importantly.
@FB - It's just that there isn't only one mistake. He makes a few here and there, and while they don't look like much, it only takes one pitch to make all the little mistakes into a big one.
San Diego Pirates up 1-0 early on.
I'm not advocating yanking Bills out of the rotation. I'm just suggesting that there's something wrong with him, and I really hope it's being addressed within the organization. Like with the employment of a sports psychologist, for instance.
If Bills' sixth inning was like this inning, I would be more frustrated
@ Mr. LA Sports Fan
thanks for reinforcing my opinions
i think i just pooped a little
woah that was close
I'm with Erin. Until there's concrete evidence suggesting a physical ailment, it is a psychological problem for him. He just seems to crack under pressure, and not just in the sixth. Through innings 1-7, Chad's OBP exceeds .300 for five of the seven innings. For Wolf, it's only two.
nice play by Belli2 to save a run!
That was a close one. Kuo giving me a heart attack there.
I think I just pooped a lot.
Karina didn't say anything about not pooping, did she?
SD Pirates roughing up J. Marquis and Rox early. 2-0 and threatening.
San Diego Pirates up by two early and still threatening.
Mr. C and Dusty are channeling each other.
DB'd again, damn.
There is not a "no mierda" rule from Venezuela in play tonight.
Mr. C! Eerie.
Thanks for the ruling, Neeebs!
This is promising.
Bison Mode: Engage
Bison Mode: Abort!
It looks like no playoff clinch tonight, unless the Mets miraculously find some cojones.
I'll be satisfied if we can get a win and the snakes are able to euthanize the giants playoff hopes.
Road Loney: Engage
Russ, you know what to do
Road-Lo!
I don't want a fuckin' live look-in! I'm ALREADY looking in!
Fucking jackass
you've got to be kidding me
No, I don't want a fucking live look-in for the Reds-'Rates!
Brim Reaper in now.
Oh, this is getting ri-goddamn-diculous.
wow great play by James!
That's game.
S
O
B
lordy
I'm glad o dog was playing tonight.
"When October rolls around, Torre better have Hudson installed back at second base and Belliard on the bench where he belongs. Any other alignment will be a blow to the Dodgers chance of winning a World Series."
Way to go, Fangraphs.
dammitalltohell
I'll take that.
does fangraphs have a chart for that?
Oh great, now O-Dog is screwed up. What the hell is going on tonight?
Fuck, now what? Gameday does not provide clarity in this case.
Repko in for O-Dog. He better run with Thome up.
Apparantly, O-Dog injured something. Either his wrist or his shoulder. It's not clear.
I knew o dog should have sat one more day.
still alive...
attaboy, Thome!
NOW GET HIM HOME!
THOME!
Wow, guy really can't run.
I love Thome running.
@fb
In my head, I read your second line as ending with "homey"
Come on FOOKY!!
M-Mac loads the bases.
I can't believe this is tense AGAINST the Nats.
I can't believe this is tense AGAINST the Nats.
fer chrissake, let's get this thing done already!
Mr C, i do have a penchant for rhyming
Slimer from Ghostbusters had a penchant for sliming
HE THROWS WIDE!
Thank the gods!
yes! i'll take it!
NOW GET HIM HOME, HOMEY!
I foresee a Gibby moment for Thome in the future...
Thanks for Belly2, Nads!
Come on, E. Put this thing to bed.
that gift was for the martin lineout!
Andre needs to put this game outta reach
A deep flyout will do here.
Just get the fuckin run in already. Not that hard.
Dre declines in the non-walkoff situation.
