Chad Billingsley (12-9, 3.86) vs. Billy Buckner (2-6, 8.29).
COMMENTS: When Billingsley last pitched on Wednesday vs. the Diamondbacks, he went through four scoreless innings before giving up four runs in the fifth inning, which stuck him with the loss when the Dodgers' offense could only muster one run in "support". Joe Torre was nonplussed, however, telling the press afterwards that he wasn't worried because he thought Billingsley had improved mechanics.
Despite Torre's explanation, Billingsley's third straight loss and tenth straight start in which he didn't make it to the seventh inning was enough to get all the local colmunists frothing at the mouth again about how ace-less the Dodgers are. The team could easily give those pundits a much-needed tune-up by firing up their offensive engines and taking Buckner for a spin, letting Bills focus on firing all of his pistons and maintaining top speed.
And that's about all the automobile references I've got, since I don't know cars very well, but I encourage you guys to go with this while I'm idling. (Speaking of idling, AccuScore has both the Rockies (Jason Marquis) beating the Reds (5.2 projected runs to 4.2) and the Giants (Timmah Lincecum) beating the Padres (4.8 to 3.1). We'd better come through today with a win.)
UPDATE 4:40p: Thanks to Eric Stephen of TBLA for the headsup that Lincecum is scratched with back spasms; Madison Bumgarner gets the start for the Giants. Take that, AccuScore!

This game's outcome is either going to cause us to rejoice and say we're on a strak and showed some heart to come back and so forth (Karina will say that). Or it will cause us to say that this is the beginning of the end and that we suck and are falling apart at the seams.
We're on the proverbial razor's edge, indeed.
Martin keeps hitting it to that same damn spot.
when they are standing in the box, I have trouble telling Russ and RonBelli apart
Hah! Look what Paul posted right when I was saying what I just said. We (myself included) are nothing if not consistent.
Conclusion: neither i can leave the boys in blue or the boys in here alone (at least when Erin is not here). Everything starts to fall in pieces.
Dusty
I think those have been my two reactions since I was four.
1 inning of happiness > 7 innings of depression
@Dusty Baker: i'm too predictable for you!
Catching up on the rest of the thread...
@DB, love the Star Trek episode 1 reference, thanks for that
@karina, you are a saint to deal with our pessimism and foul language each night...that's one of the reasons why we love you with adoration
you guys all get a wooopwooooop
dang, good idea Juanny
hehe of course there would be a hit after the CS
@ Karina-
Nothing wrong with that. Keep being you.
Too bad JP was CS, as Pierre would have been on second, possibly third for that Furcal hit
And by the way, Raffy, I take back my comment about you sucking, back when you GIDPd in the third. You're 3-for-4 tonight. Keep up the good work, and the comeback. I'll refrain from criticism of you for a while. Deal?
Kemp is going to sock one right here
@ Sax
How long is a while?
Tied at 3 in Frisco, man on first with one out in the bottom of the seventh
@saxy, to karina
agreed, there should be a medal for saint karina, patron saint of pessimistic sports fan, one you can attach to your computer or tv :)
@Dusty 9:19p: Occam's Razor, perhaps?
Bison Mode, disengage.
Kemp is not having a good sept so far. I hope he isn't tired.
dammit, kemp flied but only to shallow right center. 5-4 dodgers, here comes the brox
Holy smokes, Sax, I was *this* close to throwing Occam's Razor in there, but kept steppin'. Nice.
We can't lose if raffy has 3 hits. It would be like not accepting a free beer.
@Dusty: I love it. Saint Karina, patron saint of pessimistic Dodger fans. She has worked miracles. I'm in.
Where do we cast votes for sainthood?
PS I hope the answer isn't "sunday mass"
@Dusty, so you must have been on the razor's edge of bringing up that reference, so to speak.
@Dusty, have you ever read Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco? One of my favorites.
That was FB's suggestion. FB is in a penitent way.
Romero has Brox 3-0, and then takes a strike, thinks pitch #5 is a ball but gets called back to the plate, and then grounds out to Hudson.
One away.
Come on, Brox. Prove Kurt Streeter wrong.
@FB, my mistake. I confess. Forgive me, Fred's Brim, for I have mis-attributed.
@ Sax
It's actually in my stack right now but haven't delved in yet. Will up it in priority. Right below posting snarky shit on SoSG.
that was a laserbeam!
Down goes Drew, two away. Wow, that was amazing, Drew wasn't near the plane of that 100-mph ball.
Saxy it's ok my son, it was done with the best of intentions
@Sax you know i love you with adoration, it's reciprocal.
@Dusty: awwww, thanks.
But i'm not really a saint, though i try not to curse.
cmon JB, close them out
I hate that little guy parra.
Is anything easy anymore???? Jeez
I'm worried when the playoff starts...depending how far the Dodgers go (my heart wants they reach the big event) i'll have to leave you alone because i'll be at the Luis Aparicio.
Uh oh, Karina. We may be bad, bad boys when you are gone.
woop! awesome play, Brox!
@Nic j: he's very good...but i noticed he doesn't do that well against the Dodgers, which is fine with me.
Ahahahaha
I think that is the most athletic thing I have ever seen brox do.
Dusty
I don't say it often but this might have been the game that turns things around!
Yes! This is the best team ever! We are going to go all the way this year! We will win every game from here on out! Unstoppable!
Well, maybe not. But at least we fell on the good side of the razor.
We win!
You knew it all along, Paul! Well done.
@Paul like that attitude. It's a win!. Tomorrow the game is on ESPN, that'll be the challenge.
wow, feels like we stole one there, but they all count!
and I am glad we got the first two before facing Haren, now we can play loose and beat on him tomorrow
ooh boy it's late, gnite all
Pads up 4-3 now!
Post-Game Thread is up!
