Unnamed Source Piles On Manny; Baseball Prospectus Comes To His Rescue

ESPN Insider is not above quoting unnamed sources that state the explosive comment that Manny "is a liability": (no direct link, but it's in the mlb section of the "Rumor Central" area, from Sept 8 at 1pm ET)

A rival talent evaluator told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that he is not all that impressed with Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers could be a better team with Juan Pierre in the lineup instead.

"I know the Dodgers would never bench him, but right now, I think they're a better team with Juan Pierre in the lineup than him, because Pierre at least energizes the team," the talent evaluator says in Buster's blog. "Manny is a bad outfielder, and if he's not hitting, you notice that a lot more."

Can you believe this crap? It's almost as if Peter Gammons is afraid of attribution. Meanwhile, let's leave it to the named source, Eric Seidman of Baseball Prospectus, to restore order and logic (also on ESPN; no link):

Manny's "fall" vastly overstated

Last season, Manny hogged headlines literally every single day. This season, after returning from his 50-game suspension, the media has been relatively quiet with regards to Ramirez, leading some to believe that his numbers have substantially dropped. Well, he's currently hitting a gaudy .302/.422/.549 line with an OPS that would trail just Pujols, Fielder and Hanley Ramirez in the senior circuit if he qualified. His overall numbers may be down relative to his incredible half-season with the Dodgers a year ago, but dropping from Ruth-ian to Pujols-ian production isn't anything to fret over.

Breathe deeply. Exhale. There, that's better. (MSTI also takes on the unnamed source's ludicrous statement, providing a visual aid for the grammatically challenged. I am frequently amazed at how synced MSTI and SoSG are....)

Unnamed Sources: STFU. Let it go, man, let it go. Otherwise, we're going to have to send Fred's Brim, our lead assassin, out to "take care of business."
