Scoreboard Watching (9/10): Reds at Rockies, 12n

Can the Reds win one frickin' game over the streaking Rockies? Well Kip Wells (1-3, 4.85) doesn't give me a lot of confidence, but on the other hand he'll be facing new pickup Jose Contreras (6-13, 5.19). Rockies are 2.5 GB the Dodgers in the NL West and four games up on San Francisco for the Wild Card.

Come on, Kipster! Show us your skillz!

And they're off in Colorado...

I just read this hilarious article about Penny acting like a little girl when Gonzalez took him out the other day.

I always answer my phone like Kip. Especially when Mrs. law calls.

Walk, single, single, walk! Seven batters for the Reds in the first, who are now up 1-0.

Aw, Contreras! Thanks!

Steve Sax said...

(get it? Aw Contreras? ha ha ha ha)

Steve Sax said...

@GLG, nice post on Penny.

Especially for a ghost.

Steve Sax said...

hold that thought, Kipster's first pitch gives Eric Young first base, and Young steals second in due time. None out, bottom 1, Reds up 1-0 temporarily.

Steve Sax said...

Young sacrificed to third. One out. Kip Wells cannot find the zone.

Steve Sax said...

Kipster escaped! 1-0 Reds after 1.

Steve Sax said...

Reds have a man on second with one out and can't advance him. Sounds like the Dodgers. Still 1-0 Reds, mid 2.

On the plus side, Contreras has thrown 43 pitches through two frames.

Steve Sax said...

1-0 through two full innings.

Is anyone else interested? Maybe it's just me.

Or maybe everyone is burnt out from Assassin's Circle?

Steve Sax said...

Leadoff double for the Reds in the third. Next batter Brandon Phillips is just fouling 'em back (four straight fouls now)

Steve Sax said...

Single from Gomes can't score him, but men are at the corners with one out.

For those of you with the iPhone, this is the mlb at bat free game of the day, so you can watch the video on your iPhone if you have the app (and don't live in either market).

Steve Sax said...

Darn it, Contreras wiggles his way out of it. 1-0 Reds, mid third.

NicJ said...

It is very upsetting To see how our offense is so similar to the reds.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Ahhhhhhhhhh. Just finished my drink and left the Assassin's Bar.

Now back to logic!

Steve Sax said...

tied at 1, Colorado still up with men at the corners and two out...

Steve Sax said...

Giambi (and his .196 average) comes through with two out, scoring Gonzalez from third and Seth Smith on a double. 3-1, Rockies.

Steve Sax said...

Why do the Reds suck so? This lead will be two games going into Friday.

Steve Sax said...

Garrett Atkins HR, holy crap. 5-1 Rox through three frames.

Steve Sax said...

I HATE THE REDS

Kyle Baker said...

Good to see Spock back.

Thanks Richie.

Steve Sax said...

Dear Dusty Baker,

You are a terrible manager when it counts.

Sincerely,

SoSG Steve Sax

Steve Sax said...

Hey Dusty, I forgot to mention how funny it was on yesterday's PGT to see Richie Rich as an avatar asking me what kind of beer I brought him. Dude, I can't be feeding alcohol to a minor!

Steve Sax said...

Fifth inning: Juan Rincon and his 6.16 ERA enters the game for the Rockies. Surely the Reds can mount a rally at this stage, right?

Kyle Baker said...

Sax @ 1:34:

I was reading that and thinking, man, what did I do wrong?!? I thought, did I suck that bad at AC? Then I realized the context and who was playing and all. Whew.

@ Sax re Richie Rich asking for beer:

I know...when I type a comment, it looks like the avatar is saying it. "Richie Rich says stay in school!" or "Can you buy me a pack of Kool Filter Kings?"

Steve Sax said...

man on second for the reds with one out in the fifth. Can they score him? NOOOOOOOOO!

Wladimir Balentien, buoyed by a .232 average, strikes out for the third time today! Great idea to put him in the six-hole, Dusty!

5-1 Rockies, mid 5

Steve Sax said...

@Dusty Baker: sorry about that. I meant the toothpick-chewing, occupying-space-but-not-much-else-in-the-Cincinnati-dugout Dusty Baker. NOT you.

My bad.

Kyle Baker said...

"buoyed by a .232 average"

Heh. Nice phrase.

Is it time to start worry about Beard? I've loved the fact that Belliard is there to fill in, as he's doing more than ably, and what a luxury this is. But that is starting to mask the fact that Beard is still out and seemingly not getting much better (I understand he still can't bend down to field ground balls). Sure it's a needed rest for one of the older players on the squad...maybe I'm just missing the Beard mystique. Again, love Belliard but am just concerned at this point.

Steve Sax said...

@Dusty, Belliard is trying desperately to grow some facial hair as we speak...

Kyle Baker said...

Good, I feel better then. Hopefully he won't go all Amish looking like some of the other fellas are doing lately. Surprised they don't complain about night games since they require electricity for the lighting.

Steve Sax said...

5-1 through five innings. I'm going to a meeting. I expect the Reds to do big things while I'm gone.

Kyle Baker said...

I've cleared the afternoon of meetings so I can follow this dreadful game.

Steve Sax said...

@Dusty, true true, but think of the discount they get on faux-fireplace heaters!

Kyle Baker said...

Top of the 6th. One man on, one out. Is this the commies' time to rally?

Kyle Baker said...

No, it wasn't! GIDP. Maybe they are biding their time, stealthily plotting their overthrow of the capitalist swine that is Colorado.

Steve Sax said...

Rincon's ERA dips to 5.79 just from playing the inept Reds for a couple of innings. What a joke.

rbnlaw said...

Dusty said mask and beard in the same sentence.

Just sayin.

Kyle Baker said...

Dear Dusty-

Your team SUUUUUCKS.

Sincerely,
Dusty

Kyle Baker said...

Thanks for nothing, Cincy. Rox march ever so closer to Dodgers. Squeaky bum time, as Sir Alex Ferguson would call it.

Kyle Baker said...

Jaysus, MLB.com writers, calm the fuck down.

SAN FRANCISCO -- It's the most hotly debated topic this side of health care reform: Will the Dodgers blow it?

"In their five-plus decades in Los Angeles, the Dodgers have never lost a lead larger than the 8 1/2-game advantage that got away in 1973. This year, they've led by 9 1/2 games on June 3 and nine games as recently as July 25. If they let this one get away, it will be the worst collapse since Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World" in 1951, when Brooklyn's 13-game lead disappeared."

Or is it me who is too calm?...

rbnlaw said...

I can now hate the Reds almost as much as I did in the 70's

Kyle Baker said...

That's it, RB...feel the hate, brother!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Dusty - This is what people kept saying when the Dodgers lost to the Rockies and the lead was cut to two for the first time. I'll take it as history repeating itself.

Kyle Baker said...

I'm confident. I just want tomorrow's game to come SOON. I have the whole day off to mope around the house waiting for first pitch. I need a B story hobby, I'm afraid.
