Wade LeBlanc (1-1, 6.06) takes on Barry Zito (9-11, 3.95) in what is basically a must-win game for the Giants, in order to go into this weekend's series (in which the Dodgers--including the highly-anticipated Brad Penny game on Sunday) with any sort of momentum.
The Giants scratched Tim Lincecum yesterday and started their pitching prospect Madison Bumgarner, who pitched an admirable 5.1 innings of 2 ER ball with 4 Ks in his major league debut. However, an eighth-inning single by the Padres' Chase Headley was enough to give the Padres the game, 4-3, descending the Giants to 6.5 GB the Dodgers in the NL West, and 3.0 GB the Rockies in the Wild Card race.
Anyway, this gives you something to do over lunchtime. SoSG. We're there for you.

Between scoreboard watching, watching the ENG futbol match, and AC threadwatching, my afternoon is full.
Wade freakin Cy Young Le Blanc throwing for the Pods? Watch, he'll get lit for 7 in the first.
Worthless hunk of filth.
Zito will throw 6 innings of no-hit ball only to watch his bullpen squander the 7 run lead the Kung Pao Panda built single-handedly.
Nostradamus; watch your back mutha!
Sweartogod, right now there is a show on Nostradamus on the History Channel. I'm so watching and not working.
@DB;
I knew you would.
Bendtner scores for Denmark! Arsenal fans rejoice!
England up 2-0 on the Croats.
Northern Ireland will never play in a WC.
And my man Frank Lampard took a beautiful PK.
Eduardo has dived yet, but there's still 60 minutes.
Zito gives up a leadoff single. May there be many more.
2-0 at the half. Not insurmountable, but looking good.
Heskey is a donkey.
Meanwhile, Pods up 1-0 already.
1-0 Padres through the first
Two out double for Henry Fill In The Blanco, top 2 (1-nil, Padres)
Nothing doing for the Pads in the second. Wade LeBlanc has faced the minimum six batters through two. 1-0, SD.
ENG cruising 3-nil thanks to Frankie's header - on to the WC!!!
Lampard in again at 59'.
Hard to cheer for Lampard when he's an enemy the rest of the season.
Adrian Gonzalez HR makes it 3-0 SD, middle of the third inning.
@ RB-
He's my MAN. I actually have a dog named after him.
It's easy to cheer for all the squad no matter what club they hail from, as long as they are wearing the Three Lions.
@rbnlaw
Kinda like pulling for Timmeh in the ASG. Any goal he scores that he isn't scoring for Chelsea, I can get behind.
Uh-oh, 3-2 on an Andres Torres HR. [Who??]
4:1 now. Too little, too late.
Make that 5:1 (Rooney)
what, nobody going to represent for Arsenal, then?
Fabregas did get himself a goal for Spain, but that's beside the point.
Mr. C-
Does Ashley Cole count?
Scratchy Lincecum update:
"By Chris Haft / MLB.com
09/09/09 3:05 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO -- An upbeat Tim Lincecum said Wednesday that his ailing back has steadily improved, leaving him confident that he'll be able to pitch soon.
Exactly how soon remains unclear.
Lincecum, who was scratched from his Tuesday night outing against San Diego with back spasms in his lower left side, said he felt "pretty confident" that he would make his next scheduled start Monday against the Colorado Rockies. He also refused to rule out pitching this weekend against the Los Angeles Dodgers."
Bendtner and Arshavin both scored for their respective countries. Thierry scored for the French.
How dare you mention Cashley Cole.
Thought that would get you going, RB.
Ballack scored for GER.
Poor, poor France only managed a draw. They're struggling.
Through five innings, Pods still up 3-2. Zito has thrown 93 pitches.
The French are on the ropes.
Only an hour left until the Showdown at the SoSG Corral. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jittery right now.
3-2, top 6. Zito is already gone.
I love the fact that you guys are talking about soccer/football here. Nice.
Oscar Salazar home run on the fourth overall pitch from Waldis Joaquin (who are these guys?). 4-2 SD.
Next batter singles, too.
4-2 Pods.
@ Sax
Is that a "shut up about soccer" or were you being serious?
Cause I kinda get that not everyone likes it. ;-)
So is it Scratchy Lincecum and Itchy Cain?
One out, two on, but the Padres can't push across another run, with LeBlanc and Cabrera striking out in consecutive at bats. 4-2 Padres, middle 6.
@DB, I honestly really do appreciate it. No "shut up" intended whatsoever.
We happen to have a readership here with diverse tastes, and I celebrate it. Hence the random GT themes and other assorted bells and whistles on this site. No worries! Keep it up! I just wish I (having attended only one Premiership game in my life) could contribute more...
Top 7, two out and Adrian Gonzalez on first (HBP). Salazar at the plate...
Pods couldn't convert (again). "We" need some insurance runs.
nope, the Padres can't score. On to the bottom of the seventh, SD leading 4-2
Top 8, still 4-2 Padres
Dodgers bring in a psychologist? Please tell me no.

Is it sadistic to enjoy when the Giants lose?
@ Karina
No.
This is sports. It's ok to hate. ;-)
Uh-oh. Frisco has 2 on, 1 out...threatening in the bottom 8th.
Giants threatening in the 8th
Pods out of the jam.
Wow, 2 on and none out and the Padres escaped. 4-2 SD
Hey, how 'bout that Assassins thread?
OK, maybe not. Go Pods?
We go to the bottom of the ninth.
MLBNetwork doing a look-in of the game now.
Pads win. Let's cross the fingers for the Reds.
I listened to the Giants' postgame report on the way home (satellite radio; it' so cool). Jon Miller sounded as if he . . . was. . . distracted. . . by . . . something. . .while. . .trying to . . . give. . .the. . .um. . .report.
Honestly, either he was being screamed at in his ear, or he saw the post-game spread cart go by. No matter, he was terrible. Oh, and he blamed the loss on Zito's lazy change-ups and lack of hustle on the cover of first.
@rbnlaw: lazy and lack of hustle are right up Jon Miller's alley.
Maybe Miller got distracted when KFP walked in front of him, and he thought it was a solar eclipse?
