Jon Garland (9-11, 4.23) vs. Daniel McCutchen (0-1, 4.85).
DODGERS' OFFICIAL MAGIC NUMBER: 16
COMMENTS: Last time I said not taking a series against a losing team would be a disappointment, the Dodgers dropped two of three to the D'backs. But I'm going to risk it again: Not beating the 55-86 Buckys would be a HUGE disappointment.
The fly in the ointment could be McCutchen, in only his third major-league start. Let's hope the Dodgers' history of faring poorly against green pitchers doesn't continue tonight. Meanwhile, the Rockies are visiting San Francisco, where the Giants have taken five of six from them. I wouldn't mind seeing that trend continue.

I love Get Fuzzy. That's one of my favorite strips.
Can't watch the game tonight, so I'm hoping for a victory in abstentia.
Andrew McCutchen is awesome
so is Garret Jones
I still got love for DY.
we better sweep though
**Don't tell anyone, but after my visit to PNC Park in August, I'm a closet Pirates fan**
Furcal, SS
Kemp, CF
Ethier, RF
Manny, LF
Loney, 1B
Blake, 3B
Martin, C
Hudson, 2B
Garland, P
Get Fuzzy is second only to Pearls Before Swine.
After saying all those bad things about Brad Penny, I really hope he goes undefeated the rest of the season and resigns with the Giants for a lot of money. Tons of money, if you will.
Neeebs,
I can understand being a fan of PNC Park as I've heard it's pretty nice.
But the Bucs? Got to love perennial underachievers, I guess.
@Neeebs,
I don't think there's any need to be apologetic for your Pittsburgh crush. I too often find myself pulling for the basement dwellers in those divisions in which I have no vested interest.
Rbnlaw - We have so much to discuss.
How many McCutchens does one team need anyway?
At the game. In fact, I should be at all remaining home games, with the exception of tomorrow night. This week is going to be Dodger-filled.
Rbnlaw, after you discuss with Mr LASF, it's my turn.
Erin, i just emailed you to the robots email.
I get the feeling that Garlands option is gonna get picked up next year. Is it a good deal to pay an innings eater 10 million?
Get an out, Garland
No damage in spite he allowed Rancho Ardiendo, but he threw a lot...
"Pirates fail...to score" - Vinny
@Dusto i feel the same way too, i guess it'll depend on his performance in decisive games or situations, the possibility they can use some farm grown talent as starting pitcher. One factor to consider is the market for experienced and good starting pitching is thinner than ever.
Furcal singles and steals second while Kemp has a great at bat
Watching Giants-Rockies...Timmah could get himself out of a little trouble.
Dodgers 1-Bucks 0
Whose fault was Kemp was thrown out at home?
Perfect throw. Kemp was DOA.
Thanks a lot, Mr LASF
Bases loaded for Rowand (sadly for Giants fans)
Rowand 2 RBI single, bad guys up by two.
In Dog We Trust
Molina solo shot, Giants 4 Rockies 0 and Lincecum is potching, so that could be more than enough.
I'm flipping back and forth between the Dodgers game and Chargers game...too much sports going on right now
It could be worse, GLG.
It could be yesterday.
Raiders suck.
Aflac question: Garland is 1 of 6 current Dodgers to have won a World Series. Who are the others?
Manny, Thome, Pierre, Weaver, and...?
Oops. Not Thome.
Thome's not on that list. Was Furcal with the Braves when they won?
Aha! Eye-chart!
Not Furcal.
Tied game, urgh
Beliard!
Yes, Belliard! He was with Shaggy in '06.
@MLSF - I was helping a friend move yesterday so I was "without sports"...it was a dark dark day
Then I guess it was worse
Rancho Ardiendo!
@Gagne's lucky glasses a day without sports? a day that wasn't Christmas or New Year?your fried definitely has a good friend :)
man that took a horrible bounce off the mound.
King James scored with a O Dogg's GIDP. I'll take it.
Damn you, O-Dog. I no longer trust you.
When was the last time Andy LaRoche had three singles at Dodger Stadium?
Was even there a time when he did something like that?
Sax in the (GT) house!
2-2, mid 5.
Rox still losing 4-0 in the top of the seventh.
Neeeebs has a PNC park crush.
Andy LaRoche trying to get revenge.
What else did I miss?
Garland at 102 pitches through five; he's gotta be done, right?
The Raiders suck, dont forget that.
Wow. Even the GT is sparsely populated tonight.
I've been busy correcting homework and eating cookies. It's a tough life, but it's all mine.
Now if we could put more than 2 runs up on a rook with a gazillion ERA.
Dammit
Scuffle scuffle scuffle...
FUCK YEAH
Anti-scuffle jinx!
BOOM goes the dynamite!
Sax enters the GT house. Ethier hits a two-run HR.
Coincidence?
@rbnlaw: whose homework?
@Josh S: How is fatherhood treating you? You up at all hours?
Everything okay with Lucas?
Manny and Loney, showing no patience on a pitcher who just gave up a two-run HR
2 pitch ground out for Manny
1 pitch fly out for FJL
Come on, boys!
Alas I only have MLB gameday where I am. And it's raining.
Sax did send a couple of family members to the game, however
Garland is back! And gets out #1 in the sixth.
4-2 Dodgers, still
Colorado scored 1 in the seventh, but Giants still lead 4-1 and it's the bottom of the seventh
Sax is going for a consecutive comment streak here, as the Andre Ethier HR silenced the GT crowd, who look on in awe
Fatherhood's great! Sleep is at a premium, but I operate OK with very little.
Luke's doctor said everything is going great when he had his two-week checkup the other day.
C-c-c-combo breaker!
MLB Gameday is trying to tempt me with a live look-in of ARI @ SD.
Why, oh why, would I be interested in looking at ARI @ SD? When COL @ SF is available, and relevant?
If you're going to run a peep show, at least get the desired items on stage
Nothing "live" about that look-in.
@josh, so how many times have you said to you baby boy "Luke, i am your father" in a darth vader voice. I would of wore that out by now.
Hey Josh, I've got that guy in my collection.
I don't think he's Medicare, though.
I'm saving that voice for when he's in trouble.
The nurses in the delivery room made me do it, though.
Garland with a 10-pitch sixth inning. Nice.
Josh S: Is he Luke short for Lucas?
Top of the eighth in SF, 4-1 Giants
Yeah, Lucas is his formal name, but we've pretty much decided he'll go by Luke. Kinda like how nobody really calls me Joshua.
Ohhhh...I get it! The Daily Double sound effect for a double! I was confused for a sec.
Wow, the Bears' season went from hopes to despair in week 1. Ouch.
Hudson, 2-for-3 at the bottom of the lineup. Would be sweet if we could get him rolling again, too...
Dodgers up 5-2 on a Hudson RBI double
Giants up in the bottom of the eighth. Randy Winn actually reached base (walk) to leadoff the frame.
Phil Dumatrait's MLB picture is really goofy looking.
Almost as goofy as Doug Mientkiewicz's shot with the mullet curls in the back.
Eyechart, we hardly knew ye
KFP Ks, one out
Which is too bad, too, as I wanted to see if his little pulsating yellow dot on ESPN Gamecast would be larger than Randy Winn's.
darn it, furcal...
Mota's been activated. He was out with an "ingrown toenail".
Winn steals second, so they IBB Molina to get to Juan Uribe...who singles in Winn!
5-1 SF over the Rox, bottom eight
Men on first and second, one out
Got a little breathing room there. Would have liked to see thome there. Wonder why torre pull mankevich ( i know that sp is wrong sorry) and put in loretta.
Hong-Chih Kuo in the house
Sax, watch your language! You said "darn." Ooooohhhh - I'm telllinnnn'!!!
AC, are you at the game?
Meetings, arm-twisting, wining and dinging, cigars, Scotch, etc...all the while checking my BlackBerry for the score tonight.
"Yes, Congresswoman, I think we can get that done..." *refreshes BBerry screen*
I really, really should be headed to bed, and I will, bit wanted to check in from the Least Coast and say hey to everyone, to see how everyone's moustaches were growing, and to send a shout out to my sister-in-law who is in the Yard without me tonight. Clearly, she is a talisman (is there such thing as a taliswoman?).
-Crusty
Erin how was the free hotdog?
Ishikawa then singles, but Bengie Molina can't be sent home from sescond because he is too fat. Bases juiced.
Rincon and Flores not getting it done in relief for the Rox. Here comes Peralta.
I'm so tired, but I stay awake for the sake of Jay.
hong-chih Kuo with a K
Is Jay on this week? Who knew.
let me guess, Leno will get a laugh and then string the joke on waaaaaaaaaaay too long
Hooray for a tolerable GBA!
...unless you're a Bruin.
@Sax
Daughter's homework. Then had to make sure they read for 10-20 min.
Now just made lunches and clean up.
I'd also like to point out that Ethier's HR came soon after rbnlaw represented in the hiz-natch, y'all.
What's with the funny looking costumes on the dudes playing GBA?
Glendale is BEFUDDLED about the return of Jay Leno.
DB in the hizzle and repping with scotch and smokes.
Sweet.
I have a responsibility to watch it, for all the late nights I've spent watching late-night NBC, and Leno in general.
Interesting new avatar, MLASF.
I just remembered that African-American Mr. Clean looking dude wearing a back t-shirt avatar that you rocked a ways back. That was a good one.
Triple clearing bases for the bad guys, SF 9 COL 1
Hey MLASF:
I just saw your avi. I loved the end of KotH last night.
Boomhower a Ranger.
Hank Hill: "I haven't even had my coffee yet and the boy still ain't right."
RB-
I have option of Red Hook ESB, Bud Fat, Bud Light, Coors Light, or Heineken from the hotel mini bar. What are you feeling? Be my liver and guide me.
@Dusty: What the hell are you talking about?
@Rbnlaw: I thought having the last episode be about how Bobby and Hank finally bond was very touching.
If there's some Heineken, you don't have even a question :)
@DB
Go with the Red Hook ESB to get the buzz working quickly, then finish off with the Bud and Heine. Leave the light for housekeeping.
@MLASF
Are they cancelling KotH or will it live another day on Adult Swim?
9-1 Frisco, hoo baby
Flat Brim Reaper in the stizzle.
Canceled, though they do have a few episodes that will either air in syndication or be released on a DVD package.
Ugh. I was afraid of that. I blame the Seth MacFarland juggernaut.
If Sherrill is Flat Breezy, we also need a nickname for Garland and the stupid way he wears his hat in the dugout. Protrudy Garland?
If SF can just make this WC lead interesting for Colorado, that would be huge
Ever-Lastings? 0-for-4 night with 4 LOB
It's kind of sad, there are no pennant races this year, even in the WC races
Garland=Flat Cheezy.
Looks more like a drill instructor with that hat.
Chargers cannot lose to the Raiders. Come on, Chargers, sack the hell up
@Sax
Isn't the ALWC close?
@Rbnlaw - I've always blamed Seth MacFarlane not only for King's downfall, but the steady decline of the Simpsons in an effort to keep up.
will loney be the only 0-fer starter in the Dodgers' lineup?
@rbn, both wc races are 4.5 games. In fact I think the NL one is closer now, assuming the Giants hold on to their eight-run lead.
...which SF just did. Final in SF, Giants 9, Rockies 1
Red Hook it was. Kinda like Dusty Baker taking out a pitcher in the 3rd after he gave up 4 runs.
Loney singles in a fine at bat! All Dodgers starters with hits!
Not to make the "cartoon talk," but I agree totally about the downfall of the Simpsons. I also blame the Simpsons' Movie for some of that.
The best thing to happen to Futurarama was its banishment to Adult Swim. New episodes, less control from Fox, and a movie.
Plus Bender rules!
Gnats hold on; Rox fall. We rejoice.
Rancho everyone got hits!
Futurama was one of the greatest shows of all time.
He was so safe.
Magic number is 15.
uh, can someone explain to me why Loney tried to stretch to third on a WP?
Scooby was safe.
Where could that WP possibly have gone to have Loney try to grab two bases? Did it fall into Tommy's popcorn bucket?
Chargers lead the Ray-duhs.
America feels indifferent.
Sax, Doumit lost it for a long time. He got really lucky to nail FJL at 3rd.
@Sax:
The ball caromed up toward third. The catcher lost it for a second; sweep tag missed, but looked like it got him.
MARTIN LIVES
@DB
Love the "Rancho" comment.
Big Jim Slade on deck.
If Loney had gone to the police, this would never have happened (and he would have scored by now)
Sax wp went almost to the dodgers dugout and the catcher couldn't find it. Replays show loney was probably safe. In other news there was a car accident outside my house bit I am too lazy to go outside. Am I a jerk?
In Dog We Trust
Wow.
Rancho RISP and we hit!
This Bautista guy must be as bad as Vinny says he is.
Loney could have gotten away with it if it wouldn't have been for you meddling kids.
Let's go, Thome
HR here
I get my wish. Thome up
What the hell is that music Thome has playing for him?
Bootcheck?
AC, you really should get out there and make sure everyone is okay
...right after Thome's at bat, that is
rb: Carmina Burana
Was Brian Borman the umpire who failed to call the check swing in the Pod's game Friday night?
So much for Thome
I can see from my window that it seems like everyone is moving around. Police are already here
Oh, Thome. Come on, big guy
Is this pitcher's name really Bootcheck?
It's almost not even worth making fun of his name, it's so easy.
Thanks Josh.
Still, an odd choice. I mean, it's not even hip hoppish in the least.
Let's get this over with so we can enjoy our newly inflated lead over the Purple Rox.
raiders suck
6-2 Dodgers, going to the ninth. So much for getting greedy.
SD had better pull this drive off
Wow. Chargers lose the lead; forget their playing the team with the worst record in the NFL over the past 6 seasons.
(The Chargers, that is. SD Pads are down 4-2 in the bottom of the 10th)
Come on, Jon Mower, let's get it done. I need to finish my Red Hook and get some sleep. 1:28am, we have a huge lead against one of the worst teams around, but I'm still hanging in there.
Brox enters in a non-save situation
Moss Ks. One out.
I love watching the people who sit behind the screen try to catch the foul balls that come straight back, not realizing the screen will stop the ball.
Sort of like watching a cat play with it reflection.
DB,
How the hell are you watching the game?
Gameday? I'd have guzzled the Red Hook and gone to bed.
@ RB re screen morons
Scary part is that they both vote and drive.
Also @ RB
On my computer, I have MLB.tv sub so I can both watch the video (Vin's call!) and also pull up GameDay to keep track of the esoteria. Life is not cheap, but good.
Yeah. Go blue!!!!
That does it.
Good night, everybody!
And it's allllll done
DB,
Don't you count on some of the screen morons voting?
@ RB
Electoral college isn't exactly democratic, but it does weed out the screen morons.
Not including Larry King in that category.
PGT up. Magic number: 14.
