Game 48 Thread: May 27 @ Rockies, 12n

MANNYWATCH: 32 GAMES

Clayton Kershaw (2-3, 4.32) vs. Ubaldo Jimenez (3-5, 4.25).

COMMENTS: Dodger fan? Laker fan? Fan of both? No matter where your Los Angeles loyalties lie, today's your day. This afternoon the Dodgers go for their second series sweep of Colorado after outscoring the Rockies 23-7 in their first two games. And tonight the Lakers go for a 3-2 series lead over the Nuggets in the Western Conference finals.

And if that isn't enough to make you cancel all your meetings, lock yourself in with your television and/or computer and order a pizza, consider this: The Dodgers have not lost when playing on the same day as a Lakers-Nuggets playoff game. Sorry, Colorado, it's nothing personal.

For you lid junkies, don't expect to find those cool hats pictured above. The first one was a 2008 Rock 'n' Jocks exclusive. Only a total of 30 were made. The second went on sale at Undefeated at the beginning of the year, but isn't currently listed on their site.

I've seen these hats before in Champs in Rancho. I'd be the happiest person on earth if anyone on here could direct me to a UCLA colored Dodgers hat.

Casey Blake is a big, bearded dynamo.

Eric Stephen said...

I'm fairly certain the Lakers will win the next two games, because they don't want to force me to miss Eric Milton pitching on ESPN Sunday night.

This week is great: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday feature a Dodger day game followed by a Laker night game. Perfect scheduling.

Oh yeah, anything other than the standard blue Dodger cap is blasphemy. :)

Raintes said...

Ugh. I hate seeing those "fashion" caps out in stores. They look so stupid. Dodger hats are blue not USC red or UCLA blue & gold. These hats should be banned! Anyone wearing them at the stadium should get a beating.

:p

Josh S. said...

Torre is resting The Beard today. The offense might suffer a bit, but I prefer having him fresh for a four-game Cubs series. Those long doubles he hit in Coors would be in the street at Wrigley.

Josh S. said...

Also, this hat appears to be from an alternate 1988:

I saw a guy wearing the Lakers colored Dodgers hat at the stadium a couple weeks ago and have been searching for that hat ever since. New Era makes them and sells them at Dodger Stadium, but they sell out fast.

HLACK: The team stores in the outfield at the stadium have the UCLA colored hats on a regular basis.

rbnlaw said...

I'm sure the people of Brooklyn said the asme thing when the LA was out on the caps.
Anything's better than the red caps they're forced to wear for the patriotic holidays.

I remember the old tradition of wearing green caps for St. Patrick's Day during spring training.

MR.F said...

I want a Juan Pierre Lakers jersey.

Wesley Vento said...

I can understand the "purist" approach to gear. I only wear my New Era 3930 "game hat" to the stadium (complete with salt stains from sweating in the reserve on June Sundays). I do have an all black Dodger hat that I love, but only wear in non-game type situations. I'm part of a UCLA family, and we go to all the football games. I'd love to represent that hat at a football game, that's all.

Josh S. said...

fanerman...like this?

Oddly enough, that does look pretty sweet. This Juan Pierre love feels so...weird.

Steve Sax said...

Josh S--Agreed, it feels weird. But it is definitely deserved: JP is on a tear.

Steve Sax said...

hey Orel, do we have a separate GameThread for the UEFA Champions League Final, or should we just embed our Manchester United / Barcelona vitriol in this GT?

Wesley Vento said...

The Dodgers run differential is +86, which is 43 runs better than the next best team (Detroit at +43).

Josh S. said...

Today's lineup:

Pierre, LF
Loretta, 3B
Hudson, 2B
Loney, 1B
Martin, C
Ethier, RF
Kemp, CF
Castro, SS
Kershaw, P

rbnlaw said...

Sax,
I can't muster any enthusiasm for the final since Arsenal let me down.
I'm hoping for a better showing from the Gunners next year.

As for MUFC and Barca; I hope it goes to PK's.

Steve Sax said...

Josh, thanks for posting the lineup!

rbnlaw, if it goes to PKs, I'm just hoping for Brandi Chastain to go racing across the field shirtless again.

Unknown said...

Who ever thought Casey Blake would be the Dodgers biggest power threat outside of Manny? He is seriously murdering baseballs and it appears to me that he has done something to quicken his bat speed.

"to a UCLA colored Dodgers hat."

They are already almost halfway there.

Eric Stephen - The thought of that makes me sick. Eric Milton is pitching for us on national TV? Can't the Dodgers throw someone else on 3 days rest?

Fred's Brim said...

Young Dre dropped to sixth. His at-bats seem to be better recently though (line drives, going the other way, working walks) - i bet he has a big day very soon

Raintes said...

They should've benched Ethier for today's game and give Paul a start. Ethier is struggling BIG TIME.

Fred's Brim said...

X has a bigger struggle these days

Josh S. said...

Alireza, regarding Milton pitching on Sunday, this tidbit from the Probable Pitchers writeup gives me hope:
"If Opening Day starter Hiroki Kuroda doesn't return from his rehab assignment, Milton will pitch against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, where he's 3-1 with a 6.70 ERA in eight career starts."

Come on, Hiro!!

rbnlaw said...

Yeah, what's up with that staph infection? The release said he had the MRSA type infection. Can't be good for one's career.

Raintes said...

oops, totally forgot he was on the dl.

Call up Repko!

-_-

Fred's Brim said...

yeah it sounds bad. Grant Hill almost died from a staph infection a few years back. I think once the staph bacteria are gone, you are OK, but while you have them, you have to take them very seriously

Eric Stephen said...

Josh,

Kuroda is pitching tonight for Inland Empire. For him to start on Sunday, it would have to be on 3 days rest.

Fred's Brim said...

pitching for IE is good progress - i hope it goes well for him

Josh S. said...

Oh well. Milton it is, then. Hopefully he'll pitch as well as (or better than) yesterday.

Too bad I have school tonight, or I'd find a way to go that 66ers game.

rbnlaw said...

Underway in Rome.
0-0 with Man Utd looking confident and Barcelona looking nervous.

rbnlaw said...

1-0 Barca as Samuel Eto'o puts one home for the underdogs.

Josh S. said...

Alright, I gotta get some lunch. See you guys about a half hour into the game.

rbnlaw said...

Christiano Ronaldo with 4 shots and no goals. Both sides have settled down considerably

Alex Cora said...

Hey Hey! We score in the first again. Loney with the bloop single and Loretta scores!

rbnlaw said...

Dodgers score in the first inning again? Go figure.

rbnlaw said...

5 min. to the half in Rome. Still 1-0 Barca

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Lunch time diversion.

Hola everyone.

Steve Sax said...

1-0 Barca, 37th minute

Loney Fan said...

Kershaw is throwing strikes and was ahead of the count in the first inning.

rbnlaw said...

Good first for Kershaw.

Steve Sax said...

I expect a long GT today given we can all watch gameday rather than doing work...get to it boys!

rbnlaw said...

Messi makes a run along the left side. The cross is stopped, but damn, that guy is fast.

rbnlaw said...

Former Gunner, Thierry Henry, with a chance right at the end of the first half. Stopped by Van Der Sar.
End of 1st: Barca 1 Man Utd 0

Alex Cora said...

Alright! man on 1st and second.

Alex Cora said...

Alright again! We score on the error.

rbnlaw said...

IN play, run(s)

Alex Cora said...

Oh and Ethier had a hit in the sequence of events. About time. It was a line drive.

Josh S. said...

Back in time for the bad throw. Ethier scores! 2-0.

Alex Cora said...

Nice bunt by Kershaw. Man on second, 2 out.

Alex Cora said...

Beast Mode coming up.

rbnlaw said...

Beast Time!

Alex Cora said...

Beast mode strikes out on a foul tip.

Alex Cora said...

Oh, Nomar is on the DL.

Alex Cora said...

Dude, that curveball by Kershaw is SOOOOOO wicked!!! He set up Murton with two 94 mph fastballs then threw that high arching hook. Sweet!

karina said...

Sax, no one is going to work this afternoon. Beteween the Dodgers game and the Champions League final, i'm collapsed.

However, i don't care who wins, if my dearly beloved AC Milan is not on the game. Just for my sports junkie pleasure.

Josh S. said...

I loves me some 123 innings.

Steve Sax said...

1-0 Barca at half

karina said...

Good thing the Minotaur isn't trying to strike out everyone, it lowers his pitch count.

karina said...

Messi almost scored, bad referee call...

karina said...

Barcelona is aggressive, fault to Iniesta, free throw for Barca

Fred's Brim said...

jeez Clayton - throw strikes. this was the problem you got into here last time

Alex Cora said...

Dude, go to get something to eat and come back to see rockies on 2nd and 3rd then he BALKS!!! He was in the windup and his spikes got caught and he held on to the ball.

Alex Cora said...

That last pitch should have been a strike, but Fowler on 1st.

Alex Cora said...

Martin gunned down Fowler with a GREAT THROW off a curveball!!

rbnlaw said...

J-Mart caught someone stealing?
Do tell?

karina said...

he just reminded everyone he's a Gold Glove.

karina said...

Rbnlaw, why do you want the game end on penalty kicks?

rbnlaw said...

Karina,
I'm an Aresenal fan. It's as close to 90 min of futility as I can get. Actually, I'm pulling for Barca and Henry.

Fred's Brim said...

ok Clayton you got lucky there. time to tighten things up

rbnlaw said...

Seems like Ronaldo is the only one who showed up to play for Man U.
Rooney's been eerily quiet. They miss Fletcher, it seems.

Steve Sax said...

Anyone know how Gerard Pique of Barca merited that yellow card? Totally ridiculous.

karina said...

Would it be too personal if i ask why you are an Arsenal fan?

Manchester is playing like deers watching high lights, at night.

Steve Sax said...

Ethier's feeling it today. 2-for-2. Guess dropping him in the lineup was helpful...

Alex Cora said...

Ethier with an nice inside out swing for the single.

Josh S. said...

Andre Ethier: 2 for 2. Losing his spot to Hoffmann for a couple games was a good motivator.

karina said...

Didn't see that play, Steve.

Alex Cora said...

Kemp needs to hit a long ball. He only has 4 HR.

rbnlaw said...

Dre, 2-2. Nice.

Fred's Brim said...

that's two for Dre - maybe the toe's better

karina said...

Let's see what the 7th hottest dude in the MLB can do.

Steve Sax said...

karina, I'm not watching the game--espn gamecast says that ManU is getting its groove now. True?

karina said...

J. Castro, in play (no outs)

rbnlaw said...

Karina,
My Arsenal support comes from having a roomate my junior year who was a big Arsenal fan and then spending a semester in England surrounded by Aresnal supporters.
Where I work now, I have two friends who are lifelong Arsenal supporters. Just came naturally, I guess. Another good friend is a LFC man. He'll never walk alone.

Steve Sax said...

Juan Castro, not such a good at bat. More like Fidel Castro.

GIDP ends the inning. 2-1, mid fourth.

karina said...

For a while, Steve. But Barca is attacking again and Manchester is playing dirty, very dirty.

Again, that sort of aggressive play is a characteristic of the Premier League.

Steve Sax said...

karina, i hate to break it to you, but gameday says in play, out(s)

karina said...

My gameday said in play (no outs), then froze and now it tells it was a DP.

Steve Sax said...

Love this commentary from espn gamecast at 67':

Puyol needs no invitation to hit the deck as Ronaldo challenges him in the air. That is an equal contest; girl on girl.

karina said...

Steve, you're watching two different gamedays for two different sports, way to go!

Steve Sax said...

karina, it sounds like the venezuelan gameday has some bugs...how will mlb ever take this game global if they can't improve the IT infrastructure?

Steve Sax said...

espn gamecast says ManU has not taken a shot on goal this half--is that true?

Steve Sax said...

quite a Helton at bat here to lead off the fourth

karina said...

Messi is an artist, he transforms goals in performance art. Wow.

Barcelona 2-Manchester 0

Neeebs (The Original) said...

What's wrong with Beast Mode today?

0-2.

Looks like he's poised to make a late inning run for BM. (That's Beast Mode, not Bowel Movement.)

karina said...

True and losing by two, they haven't reached the goal area...

karina said...

Until now, Manchester just worked the counterstrike (is that the way you say it on English?)

rbnlaw said...

Messi scores!
Barca 2- the hated and repugnant Man Utd 0

karina said...

Rbnlaw, have you read Fever Pitch? if not, go and read it ASAP.

Everyone who considers himself a sports fan should read that book. It should be heralded as a literature classic for the accurate portrayal of the feelings and situations every dedicated sports fan have, no matter the sport.

rbnlaw said...

Karina,
Yes.

Steve Sax said...

GOOOOOOAL BARCA 2-nil

Steve Sax said...

sorry that was so late, my windows explorer crapped out

Steve Sax said...

Oh, that's not good, Clayton.

3-2 Rockies thanks to a two-run Murton HR

karina said...

Rbnlaw, i don't like Liverpool at all. They made me cry in the Champions League final four years ago, i kid you not.

I mean, AC Milan was winning 3-0 by the end of the first half, they ended up losing on PK. Cried like a baby, it was very sad.

Fred's Brim said...

oops
it was about time Spilly did something to us

rbnlaw said...

Karina,
I do need to. I don't like the way they changed it for the movie. I thought being an Arsenal fan was universal.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

I'm sorry, I thought I stumbled onto the DODGERS gamethread, not the Sons of Pele gamethread.

Josh S. said...

Oh no. Bad Clay is here.

Steve Sax said...

settle down, minotaur

karina said...

Iniesta is having a great game. The score would be greater if Van der Sar wasn't so good.

karina said...

Kershaw made adjustments and got out of the jam.

Fred's Brim said...

Clayton's got Jimenez leading off the next inning. Let's get a few runs this inning and follow that with 1-2-3

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Time for a distraction!

Steve Sax said...

Okay, 3-2 after four inning at Coors.

Come on, guys, it's Ubaldo Jimenez, we should be able to come back here.

rbnlaw said...

There's only one winner in the Ronaldo-Messi battle so far. And he's not Portuguese and fond of hair gel.
-from the BBC

Steve Sax said...

At least Kobe Bryant will be happy going into tonight's Lakers game

rbnlaw said...

Sorry Neebs,
Mixed use day for another few minutes.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

BM

karina said...

I think the way people react with sports is universal. You feel the same reckless, unconditional love you could feel for family and close friends. That's the greatness of that book, capturing in words universal, yet inexplicable feelings, because at the end of the day, the love you feel for your favorite team is irrational.

Steve Sax said...

Neeebs, Sons of Pele? Sounds like a good idea for April 1, 2010.

It's not our fault that our readers are so internationally worldly (and good at multi-tasking)

Josh S. said...

Beast Mode Activated.

(That was a Steiner home run, btw.)

Neeebs (The Original) said...

RBN: If the LA Kings were in the playoffs and playing I would be doing the same.

karina said...

Beast double!

Steve Sax said...

"That's the greatness of that book, capturing in words universal, yet inexplicable feelings, because at the end of the day, the love you feel for your favorite team is irrational."Karina, that's like my love for you!

Neeebs (The Original) said...

But are you sufficiently distracted by Anna?

Steve Sax said...

Beast Mode doubles, but then gets doubled off second base. Come on, BM!

karina said...

Multitaking is our middle name! everyone is working and paying attention to three different sports.

Steve Sax said...

I have the kournikova fathead on my wall

(just kidding)

Steve Sax said...

Toronto @ Baltimore, tied at 8 in the ninth inning

karina said...

hahahaha Steve, i feel the same way about you and the rest of the Sons.

Steve Sax said...

ManU misses over the crossbar

karina said...

Neeebs, for a minute i thought it was a picture of your wife.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

cuando amor no es locura, no es amor.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

LOL, Remember, she's from Chile. She's a latin beauty.

Steve Sax said...

End of five, still 3-2 Rockies

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Suddenly, everything seems so normal again.

Fred's Brim said...

nice Clayton! now don't 1-2-3 inning feel good? they sure do

karina said...

Barsa won!. I expect a call from my brother in the next 15 minutes. He lives in Australia and decided to stay up all night long and of course, he'll have to brag about the 2008-2009 Barcelona FC.

Steve Sax said...

Barcelona is the European Champion. Whoo hoo!

Neeebs (The Original) said...

HR or gapper would be nice right here.

karina said...

Neeebs, i have two chilean girlfriends and they are beautiful, them and her sisters and mothers, it's unbelievable.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

That's Barthalona, you all the spaniards out there.

Alex Cora said...

Uh, James that is not what we wanted. DP

karina said...

Barca only needs to win the Intercontinental Cup...

Josh S. said...

Death by Double Play today, I guess.

Steve Sax said...

To anyone watching the game: mlb gameday doesn't have Loretta as a GIDP. Any reason why? Didn't his liner to Jimenez get Beast Mode picked from second?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Karina: All woman from South America are beautiful, Venezuela included!

Steve Sax said...

Loney, dammit, another GIDP

Fred's Brim said...

was that a real hit for Orlando? or a scorekeeper's gift?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

BTW, my friend from Maricaibo is coming to visit in October. Hopefully we will be in post-season so I can take him to a game.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

For Neeebs, its now WM. That's Work Mode.

I'll post when the need arises.

Now back to work.

Steve Sax said...

Wow, I take back my Loney GIDP statement. Ethier leads the NL with 11 GIDPs, but Loney isn't even in the top 40. That's a big improvement over last year for FJL...

Steve Sax said...

Neeebs, booooooooooooooooo

Steve Sax said...

Loney only has 3 GIDPs this year; Kemp has 4

Steve Sax said...

one pitch, one out for Helton, leading off the bottom of the sixth

Steve Sax said...

Ethier Kemp Castro up in the 7th for the Dodgers

Steve Sax said...

Kershaw gets Atkins out. Let's go, Andre Matt and Juan

Fred's Brim said...

working around walks. nice work Clayton

Alex Cora said...

Running out of time here. Need a HR!!! Come on guys!

rbnlaw said...

Work is such a distraction.

Steve Sax said...

Why is every Dodger grounding to the pitcher today. How big is Jimenez' glove?

Steve Sax said...

Dear Matt, please don't swing on this 3-0 count

Steve Sax said...

Kemp indeed takes a strike, then walks on the fifth pitch

Steve Sax said...

No GIDP, Castro!

Steve Sax said...

Men on first and second, one out. Come on, Dodgers!

I assume Kershaw is not coming out of the dugout, right?

Steve Sax said...

BEARD MODE

Josh S. said...

It wasn't meant to be(ard).

karina said...

He struck out :(

Wesley Vento said...

to quote Charlie Steiner, "The Rockies don't want to go to their bullpen, for it has definitely been a rocky bullpen."

Why can't Vin be on radio and tv?

Alex Cora said...

The Beast is BACK!

Josh S. said...

Beasted! How did that look? Steiner made it sound epic.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

BM as I predicted, back loads his production.

Wesley Vento said...

Steiner almost pooped his pants that time

Alex Cora said...

Hot line drive right off of Helton. It was smoked, tough to catch.

rbnlaw said...

Beast Mode when you need it.

Alex Cora said...

Hong: that steiner quote is awesome.

Fred's Brim said...

Juanny!

Steve Sax said...

Beast Mode delivers, where Beard Mode could not!

3-3

rbnlaw said...

On comes Manny Corpas, the pride of Panama.

Steve Sax said...

pretty snazzy double-switch there, Rocies

Neeebs (The Original) said...

lo rETTA

Alex Cora said...

The bench does it again!!! Loretta with the base hit. Nice line drive to center. How did Charlie sound with that one? Lose his lunch?

Wesley Vento said...

This team is incredible. We're Dodger fans, right? These are the Los Angeles Dodgers?

rbnlaw said...

Get back, Lo-retta.

Fred's Brim said...

M-Lo continues the 2-out lightning!

Josh S. said...

Alex, Steiner was all, "Line driiiveBASE HIT!!!!!" then proceeded to talk about how awesome our lineup is.

Fred's Brim said...

hehe i've been wondering that a lot over the past couple of months, Hong

Alex Cora said...

Meanwhile Vin says that the Rocky bullpen is struggling. "Is the pen mightier than the sword? Not in Colorado."

rbnlaw said...

Sorry to see Corpas go. He's been so good to the Dodgers.

Fred's Brim said...

10 hits, 4 runs. one more would make that ratio look a lot better

Unknown said...

Wow...does anyone ever look at an old box score and get a blast from the past player completely forgetten.

I was looking at the box score proving the fact that Eric Milton threw a no hitter and the DH for the Angels in the game was...Matt Luke, who played well for the Dodgers for like one year. Weird that I hadn't remembered that over the last 10 years.

Fred's Brim said...

crap i gotta go - finish this off without me, please :)

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Clear the Bases.

Wesley Vento said...

BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

Alex Cora said...

WOOHOO!!! FJL opens the game up. Bases cleared!!!

Alex Cora said...

James likes the Colorado air. remember last year?

Alex Cora said...

Kershaw could get the win?!?

rbnlaw said...

Ho hum, another 7 run game.

Josh S. said...

Belly Mode.

rbnlaw said...

I will not resort to trickery for 200.

Unknown said...

Kershaw actually pitched a pretty good game. One bad pitch.

Unknown said...

Fangraphs FIP doesn't like Belly all that much, probably because of his highish walk counts and low BABIP. OTOH, he has a Lowe-esque GB rate, which is really sweet.
