Jeff Weaver (2-1, 3.38) vs. Livan Hernandez (3-1, 5.59).
COMMENTS: We can beat the Mets when they make five errors, not including forgetting to touch third base on the game-winning run. We can beat the Mets when they make one error. So the question tonight is, can we beat the Mets if they don't make any errors? Not that I'm predicting an error-less game for the Mets, but it would be nice to win a game that they didn't giftwrap for us with a bow, right? So far, the Dodgers are 7-3 against NL East teams, which we all said was going to be the Dodgers' true test of mettle after fattening up on the easy pickings of our own division. A sweep against the Mets would indeed be sweet.
Joe Torre had to rustle Weaver up from a deep sleep yesterday, in order to inform him he'll be starting tonight in place of Eric Stults, who has a spwained left thumby (awwwwwww!). Can Shaggy shake off the effects of scooby snacks and lead a group of meddling kids to victory?

X-Man getting his first start in center.
It is his first, right? Only pinch hit appearances so far.
rbnlaw - Yes, though he has stayed in for defense in a game or two
What I want to know is why sit Kemp against a soft-tosser who hangs lots of high breaking pitches? He will eat Livan alive.
Paul had started before, but in right-field.
the o dogs shoulder must be fine, i thought joe was going to sit him for a few days?
Yeah, Scully said O-Dog was "day to day", as per Jon's post.
CORRECTION: Dodgers are 6-3 vs. NL East. :)
If you want to see something really funny about Manny Ramirez

iDodgr, I think we're both wrong...I forgot about Washington.
LAD vs:
Florida 2-1
Philly 2-1
NYM 2-0
Washington 1-1
Total NL East: 7-3. Thanks for the headsup; corrected.
Can anyone name the new Avatar?
Yes, that is actually the only episode of Star Trek I have seen. I don't know the name but I can describe what happened.
I know he was using a dummy to make the Enterprise crew think that was him, and threatened them if they pursued his strange-looking ship.
MLSF: You are correct. His name is Balok, and he was played by Clint Howard.
Scary that I knew this was Clint Howard...
Clint Howard is reputedly a very generous tipper.
Thanks Neebs, now we have to look at a youthful Clint Howard every time you post.
Better than an adult Clint anyday.
Guess who just got his "Juanpierrewood" shirt today?
Awwww yeahhh.
Howard Clint, on the other hand, is parsimonious.
I've been opposing an MSJ all day. So, I'm delirious and burned out.
You've been opposing a mission san jose high school?
oh, motion for summary judgment. my bad
The game is on the Dodgers WIN Network online, so I'm gonna give that a try tonight.
mlasf - how does the WIN network work? i've gotta broke TV here and MLB.tv is blacking out the game and m looking for another option
http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/la/community/win/index.jsp
Go to this URL, and at the bottom of the page is the WIN broadcast with Jeanne Zelasko and Mark Sweeney.
Watching the game on tv for the third game in a row and guess what? Vinny's on!
http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/
la/community/win/index.jsp
hmm not a huge Jeanne Zelasko fan, but i'll give it a try! thanks mlasf!
Beltran doubles. Weaver's got trouble.
haha Vin's telling the gold tooth story!
who is 'comment deleted?' haha. i've never seen that before
did you read the article about Scott Schoenweis' wife?
i think you spell it that way.
That's tragic
Nice, Weaver!
Weaver is living dangerously with those high fastballs to Wright, but his velocity is solid and his movement, 15" pFX, is filthy.
BTW, anyone else pay attention to how Beltran has quietly pounded Dodger pitching, especially from a SLG standpoint?
it was a pretty devastating story.
I remember the day when it was reported that Don Drysdale died in his room. I was still in elementary school, and I remember talking to my friends about it; none of them cared but me.
The Schoeneweis story is horrific. Their 14 year old daughter apparently found her mother. I only hope their family can recover from this.
Dream Weaver is laboring right now. looks like the bullpen will get some work before the off day.
but one of our own is in the press box, that would be like a dream come true. I wouldnt be able to not cheer!!
SWING at those fat pitches Juan.
BEASTMODE!!!
See? He was practicing that this afternoon!
Weave had an acceptable inning Booger, and he usually gets better as he goes on.
Beast Mode, a bunt made into a hit because of his legs...
Certainly the bunt practice worked.
Wow. Pierre is going well. He got an IF single on the worst pitch to swing at Hernandez threw in that AB. He took an 84 MPH heater over the middle, but singled on that junk.
Remember when Livian was all good in the playoffs and then the Giants signed him and he never lived up to those expectations.
that was priceless!!
it seems like he's been pitching forever.
Furcal owns Livan, so hopefully this helps him break out.
Hernandez had a huge strike zone in the playoffs in 97.
Brewing like a coffee pot.
hahah, yeah. then Jose Meza pulled a major choke job.
I won $20 bucks on that series.
time really flies.....sha na na na...
Hernandez has a weird nose, its like someone molded a piece of silly-putty and put it on his face.
Livan's value has always been in his Paul Byrd-esque ability to eat innings at league average (and perhaps his ability to swing the bat). Other than that, he isn't much.
at least he cant hit into a double play.
a traditional one at least.
Ok Dre, just hack at the first pitch. Livan is coming with that BP fastball.
Ok, NM.
Up by one already, not too bad.
Son is coming up...
game 1 of the 97 world series saw a win by Livan, a homerun by Manny Ramirez, and a loss from an old favorite.......Orel!!!
Baby steps with Dre I guess.
Sometimes I wish Jeff Weaver would take a look at his little brother and realize just how good he can be, because they are basically identical pitchers.
Weaver seems to thrive on walking the tight rope.
Awfully quiet. Is everyone but me at the game getting their Beard-ble-head?
I'm here, just fascinated by hearing Vinny and watching the game with my brother, the Mets fan.
King James and his leadoff single
Loney with a single.
That was a good sign for James. He went Middle-Away as opposed to pulling a pop-up.
Is Paul really 5'9" 205? He does not look that stocky.
Making contact, skill he's very good at.
Beard Mode.
Paul flies out. Time for the Bearded Bobblehead
Bobblehead magic!
Beard with a single? How is he not further up in the lineup, especially with Ethier struggling.
Wow. A non-XBH from Beard Mode
Ugh, terrible bunt from Weaver.
MLSF - If it ain't broke, why fix it? Remember when they moved DeWitt out of the 8 spot? Some guys just thrive there and Blake's style seems well suited.
What the hell was Beast Mode swinging at?
I still think Casey can drive in more runs higher up.
The Cavs/Magic game is getting interesting.
O dog just made a perfect play.
great stop by orlando ( and the crowd gasps in awe! )
Steve Lyons is standing behind me.
Uh-oh. Castillo's on.
BTW, anyone else notice that Beltran is raking like he did in KC and HOU?
Orel - Tell him to make sure to keep his pants on.
Aw hell.
Orel, if you want to piss of Steve Lyons, tell him that beach volleyball is awesome.
I mean "off".
Damn Beltran.
Orel,
Tell Lyons we said shutup.
Weaver should learn how to throw that slow curve his brother does. His slider sucks.
If that slider can hit its spots, it's deadly. But Weaver just keeps missing.
Room-service DP gets Weaver out of the inning.
Orel's fast. I'm stuck using Gameday and Dodgers WIN.
That 1 pitch GIDP was needed.
98
Weaver at 51 pitches.
Ramon Martinez in at SS for the Mets.
MLSF - The Slider depends almost entirely on location, not break. It is basically a changeup in disguise. Jered throws a much bigger breaking and slower curve that is much more useful and less likely to get murdered if he misses.
Damn it Jose. You are NOT currently justifying the number 5 pick I used on your for fantasy.
O-Dog looks pretty healthy, I would say. Doubles to right-center.
Damn it. I got 100 without saying 100.
Double Dog!
Bulldog - Was that a low, hard liner or an almost home run?
Ethier looks ready to break out again. Two well hit balls.
O-Dog is tied for the NL lead in Doubles.
Not much of an AB for Dre, but it did get Hudson to 3B.
Damn Russ. That was a case where you should have pulled the pitch.
Argh!
Reyes re-aggravated the injury to his right calf. Bummer!
When did Reyes re-hurt himself?
Hudson now has an 11-game hitting streak, tying a career high (he's had four such streaks).
Hudson is so good at ranging into RF.
I am still trying to figure out why UZR pisses all over Hudson. Sort of like Torii Hunter. These guys make great plays all the time AND are sure handed. I am calling for reform.
Furcal is in fine defensive fettle tonight.
UZR?
What is O-Dog's UZR/150?
Orel - -15.9, believe it or not.
Big Game James!
The Ump is giving Livan a wide berth
X-Mode
HR number 10 Beard Mode?
Nope. A swing at a bad ball.
That Cavs/Magic game is insane.
hahah, Vin just called her Jeanie Jalasko.. I love when he does that.
like Gay D. Drew
THE MAGIC WON!
Orel,
Go ask Sweeney why he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a canoe last year. Kind of ironic he gets to called "former Dodger" when he spent most of his career in the town by the water.
Orlando by 1pt, insane...
Sweeney actually bounced around a lot.
Howard is amazing, the winner of that series gets to lose to the lakers in the finals
"Bulldog - Was that a low, hard liner or an almost home run?"
O-Dog's double? Liner.
Yeah, but he got his rep as a pinch hitter with the Gnats.
AFLAC Trivia from the Mets coverage: Who is the only person to have hit at least 50 HR while striking out less than 50 times in a season?
Wolf is batting? wha?
Was ist das?
Wolf bats for Hair Weaver?
FB,
It ain't Dave Kingman.
A righty is up in the pen.
I guess Torre didn't want to go to the bench with the O-Dog playing hurt.
BEAST MODE AGAIN!
Beast Mode is every mode.
Let Bills hit - they couldnt get him out last night!
Tron-Tron is pitching.
damn that Murphy. sucker couldnt catch a cold in the outfield, but turns into John Olerud (minus the earless helmet) at first
throw strikes!
Two of those pitches were strikes.
(still hate Joe Torre) why yank Weaver after only 5?
Tron Tron's fastball says 93 on the gun but it never looks that fast
Whew, close one for Tron
"Orel - -15.9, believe it or not."
Seems...wrong.
Damn Wright.
Weaver keeps bouncing back and forth between the starting rotation and the pen. He's probably not stretched out enough to go longer.
Big K by Tron - one more to go!
Just got back from the game.
Tronny gets Church to ground out. Very tough against the 3 lefties!
How does Livan have only 70 pitches?
jeez Andre
C'mon Andre, what are you doing up there?
Another 1-2-3 inning for the Muts.
Mets AFLAC trivia answer:
Big Cat Johnny Mize
51 homers, 42 Ks in 1957
there is no such thing as a check swing in 2009
O-Dog's UZR just went down a little.
cmon Tron. get Ramon now and the bats will set you up for a win in the bottom
does Hudson's UZR go down after not beating Livan to second on that grounder?
yikes - the Nationals bullpen is 1-15 this season after tonight
we need to start taking some pitches
Will Blake earn his bobblehead?
Keep commenting, i'll have to leave you, big headache and this Hernandez's performance is not helping.
Kemp's on deck.
Casey's bobblehead looks more like Jeff Bagwell
Doesn't make sense. Blake finally has a real hitter behind him and he gets walked.
finally a BB
take some pitches, Matty
C'mon Slappy.
Bleeder!
top of the Mets order in the 8th - need to stay tough
What do Ronald Belisario and Madonna have in common?
they've both slept with Big Daddy Kane?
damn Belly - why walk that bum?
They both have too many appearances!
8 straight balls from Belly. Not good.
Kind of a circular route by Kemp but he gets the job done.
ugh Belly
attendance: 50,761
Does he walk Murphey to get to Church?
Leach in.
another tough spot for Leach
Oh jeez, Torre really wants to lose this game.
Damn bullpen.
Pedro Cerrano at the game!
If Mota comes in, Torre's given up.
Nasty breaking ball by Leach for strike one.
Big out for Leach.
Whew, two down, one to go
Time to get Ryan "Now Where the Hell did Third-Base Go?" Church out
Or Fernando Tatis. Same thing.
wow Brent!!
Whew, that was Leach's biggest outing there.
Torre must have been using Mota to warm up Rob Flippo
199
200?
Finally got one.
Good work by Leach.
