Game 36 Thread: May 14 @ Phillies, 10a

MANNYWATCH: 44 GAMES

Chad Billingsley (5-1, 2.45) vs. Cole Hamels (1-2, 6.17).

COMMENTS: Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey! Did we need that one last night or what? Even better, the rest of the division lost, leaving the Giants 4.0 games behind the Dodgers, with the Rockies, Padres and Diamondbacks a collective 23 games under .500.

Now that old friends have had their way—former Dodgers Chan Ho Park and Jayson Werth, and former Phillie Randy Wolf—today's getaway-day rubber match is about (flips coin) settling scores. Billingsley wants to stick it to the team that rocked him in last year's playoffs, and Jonathan Broxton wants another shot at Matt Stairs.

In the other dugout we have Hamels, so dominant in October but off to a rough start this year. He pitched solidly in his last start, however, so his performance today will determine which team will be getting its mojo back. Call me biased, but I vote for us.

Good morning! Here's hoping the game plays on my MLBTV @ work!

What a great win last night, hope we can keep it workin' today behind a Billingsley, who has something to prove to the Phillies after the '08 NLCS!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

No thread for me today. Too early.

Chappy said...

I wish I could have called out today.

Nothing better than coffee and Dodger baseball whilst sitting in a house devoid of the din created by wife and children.

rbnlaw said...

I'll be tracking on either Yahoo or Gameday. They frown on TV's on at work.

Chappy said...

once my work's IT figures out I'm streaming games from time to time they'll probably shut down access, but thankfully they haven't noticed yet...

Unknown said...

MLB at bat on the iphone for 9.99 makes it nice and convinient to listen to the game at work...and it should be over by the time I leave!

TB said...

I was at the game last night in Philly and was sitting behind a group of 8 or 9 scouts. Pretty interesting to see, one guy had a Mets pullover on and stayed the entire game, most left in the 7th or 8th, and was scribbling a lot of notes while Ohman and Leach were pitching.

rbnlaw said...

Scouts. My first thought was, "Gee I bet the little guys were disappointed when we poured it on." Then I realized you meant baseball scouts, not boy scouts.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Top of the Morning to all of you.

I'll be listening and infrequently posting, as the boss doesn't like when I screw around at work.

Ben said...

Glad Furcal talked with Manny...so far so good...

rbnlaw said...

Gameday is painfully slow.
One pitch; one double for Rollins?
Yikes.

MR.F said...

I had sooooo much trouble waking up this morning.

rbnlaw said...

Lead off double haunts Bills

MattyA said...

Big strikeout for Bills

rbnlaw said...

1-0 Phllies end of 1.

karina said...

Epale everyone! Martin just singled...

since i've got to stay at home to write an article, i can get to watch gameday and sharing with you over here.

koufax said...

good strike out, but high pitch count for bills

Chappy said...

Sweet it's letting me watch.

Bills needs to get himself outta this mess in the 2nd!

koufax said...

bend but dont break for bills

MattyA said...

Bills squeaks out of a jam again.

Erin said...

Hey everyone. Just got back from a run along the water and some time in the gym. Wish I had come back to a Dodgers' lead, but it's early yet.

Steve Sax said...

Only 19 comments so far, in the second inning? What, you guys are working?

Bills gets Rollins to pop out with two RISP, escaping the second. Let's go now, Dodgers, and try and string some hits together rather than meting out one per inning.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

update:

so, as you all may remember I had a difficult time with my Dew yesterday. So I ate a nice green salad to kinda even things out... left work early and slept all day... tivo'd the game. (big win!) Woke up this morning and it looked like I drank a can of green paint.

Steve Sax said...

Erin, you really should take a shower first before showing up to the SoSG bar in your workout clothes.

Steve Sax said...

Beard's gonna stroke one

Chappy said...

Nice Casey!

Erin said...

Sax, I don't intend to miss any more of the game. You're just going to have to deal with my stink.

koufax said...

lets get this bunt down chad

rbnlaw said...

Nice call, Saxy.

koufax said...

very poor ab

Steve Sax said...

Did I call the blake xbh or what?

Steve Sax said...

Okay, erin. Let me pour you one anyway.

rbnlaw said...

Let's go Beast Mode!

Steve Sax said...

rbnlaw, what does that stand for anyway?

Erin said...

Better make it a light beer, Sax. I didn't do all that running for nothing.

Orel said...

Dusto. Wow.

rbnlaw said...

My initials then the word law. I'm a part-time ambulance chaser. I was going to change it, but then I just got used to it.

karina said...

Do we have dress code on the SoSG bar?

Steve Sax said...

all we need is more than one hit an inning...

Erin said...

Is this double really going to go to waste?

Orel said...

Is it good that we're fouling off so many balls? Hamels isn't blowing us away but no one seems to be able to figure him out.

koufax said...

hamels at 50 pitches

Chappy said...

come on Rafi!

Orel said...

"Do we have dress code on the SoSG bar?"

Something about pants, or no pants.

koufax said...

thank you jimmy

Orel said...

Danke, Rollins!

Chappy said...

nice, get the gift run!

Steve Sax said...

yahoo raffy!

Erin said...

I love "in play, run(s)"

Chappy said...

Wow, Rollins is really having a poor start. He and Furcal should go to lunch after the game...

MR.F said...

Yes!

Steve Sax said...

Okay, I gotta go wake AC up and make sure he joins the GT. Give me a second.

rbnlaw said...

Love the at bats this inning.

Orel said...

O, Dog.

Steve Sax said...

Since we've done a pretty decent job at setting Jimmy Rollins back on track after an early-season slump, it's only fair that Philly return the favor and get Raffy back on track, too.

koufax said...

o dog in line for the golden sombrero

Steve Sax said...

57 pitches through three for Cole. Way to work a high-pitch-count inning, boys!

1-1, mid 3

Ben said...

I, for one, like the foul balls...let's wear Hamels out...I would rather face the bullpen...

Chappy said...

yep patient bats are a must!

Hope Bills gets his zone nailed down...

Chappy said...

I was trying to give time to get used to him, but I must agree Eric Collins is pretty bad.

Chappy said...

that pitch was great!

Get 'em Bills!

koufax said...

nice inning bills

Chappy said...

I may be biased slightly, but this strike zone is working for me!

Way to go Bills, 3 up 3 down!

Neeebs (The Original) said...

I think that the dress code at the SOSG bar is that anything goes, except no Merkins and no Codpieces.

rbnlaw said...

Holding my breath.
Let's get to Hamels this inning.

Orel said...

Aflac: Cole Hamels is 1 of 3 pitchers to win the NLCS & World Series MVP in one season. Who are the other 2?

Steve Sax said...

51 pitches through 3 for Bills. Nice.

1-1, end 3

Chappy said...

Schilling and Beckett?

Orel said...

(takes codpiece off)

Orel said...

What's wrong with Andre?

Orel said...

More SB revenge!

koufax said...

what was martin doing there

Orel said...

Oh man. One pitch after a great stolen base, Russell gets doubled up at second after Loney hits a weak liner to first.

Orel said...

Got caught napping.

Steve Sax said...

why did loney swing at that pitch, of all pitches; he was jammed

Orel said...

Not napping—actually he broke the wrong way when Loney hit it.

Steve Sax said...

Hershiser's gotta be one of the aflacs

Wesley Vento said...

I hate the Phillies. Hate.

rbnlaw said...

Well that sucked.

Orel said...

KKKKK

Steve Sax said...

Seven days ago, Andre was batting .327.

Since then, he hasn't had a multi-hit game and is now at .269 with at least 582 DPs. Give or take a couple of hundred.

Chappy said...

nice breaker!

Chappy said...

Sheesh! That's just gonna reinforce the Manny theory on Andre's batting.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

so, gameday is as slow as ever!

Orel said...

Aflac: Livan Hernandez and some guy also named Orel

Chappy said...

Yep I keep getting errors and slowness too Dusto.

Chappy said...

Nice DP! Loney's glove is still consistent!

Chappy said...

soooo i'll be keeping my silly guesses to myslef now I suppose.

Orel said...

That was an ugly 3-6-3 DP, but I'll take it. Loney threw high to Furcal, who had to leap to catch it. He then double-clutched and threw near the dirt to Loney, who had to dig it out.

Orel said...

Matt Kemp first-pitch single right over the head of Jimmy Rollins!

rbnlaw said...

Bunt dammit!

koufax said...

billingsly has got to work on his bunting skills

Wesley Vento said...

terrible! billingsly needs to pull his head out of his a$$ at the plate!

rbnlaw said...

Ugh. Not there, Bills.

Orel said...

Casey singles! Kemp lingered between second and third, trying to draw the throw to second. Ended up scrambling back to second.

Next play: Bills doesn't get the bunt down far enough, but hauls ass down to first to avoid the DP.

Chappy said...

why bunt again? swing away and drive in runs!

karina said...

I hate when the first out is on the 3rd, but that's ok Matt.

Erin said...

99.

Erin said...

100.

Erin said...

I'm working and keeping my eye on the game, but I just wanted to jump in and say that.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

yeah, blake singles... oh snap... still really behind.

Orel said...

Good pitch by Hamels to get Furcal.

koufax said...

i think everybody but furcal knew a change up was coming there

Snarktwain said...

Had to know that pitch was coming!

Orel said...

Collins & Lyons talking about Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown and, inevitably, Alfonso Alfonseca.

koufax said...

that sucked

Orel said...

Bills can't pick up Hamels' bunt. E-1.

rbnlaw said...

Someone needs to steal Collins' baseball encyclopedia.

Orel said...

Hey Trite Fantastic, one of our original followers!

Orel said...

Is Eric Collins the new Ross Porter?

rbnlaw said...

Error by Bill: bad
Hamels on the bases: good?
2 on; 0 outs: bad.

Orel said...

Russell visits the mound, and it's like Bills is comforting him.

Orel said...

Rollins K's swinging but Russell throws the ball into RF trying to pick off Hamels at first.

Orel said...

Need a DP here.

Chappy said...

Internet is killing me today, I'm gonna stop with the GT so it will hopefully improve my video of the game.

C-ya everybody.

koufax said...

whew!

koufax said...

i almost just pooped myself

Ben said...

Good heads up D getting Ruiz...

Orel said...

K-3-6-5-2-6 DP!

Victorino K's swinging, they get Hamels in a rundown between first and second then Ruiz tries to steal home and they get him between third and home!

karina said...

WOW!

thanks Orel, i almost suffered from a heart attack reading here and waiting for Gameday.

Erin said...

Not a good day for the O-Dawg.

rbnlaw said...

Gameday almost had a meltdown describing that DP.
Serves the Phills right; trying to steal home twice in the same homestand. Bastards.

Orel said...

Hamels was unaffected by his time on the basepaths.

Orel said...

Two K's and a walk.

rbnlaw said...

Hoser Mode!

Orel said...

And Martin is picked off after breaking too early trying to steal second.

Erin said...

Great day on the basepaths for Martin, huh?

Alex Cora said...

What is up with Martin and his poor baserunning today? Ugh.

Orel said...

Why would a baserunner go on the first move by a left-hander?

koufax said...

lets not walk another leadoff hitter

koufax said...

thank you

Alex Cora said...

Eight K's by Bills. Come on baby, give the man some run support!

Orel said...

KKKKKKKK

Snarktwain said...

Hey, Orel! Didn't realize I was an Original Follower! Do I get a plaque?

Orel said...

Yes. A virtual plaque. In my mind.

koufax said...

so does bills come back out in the 7th, 9 ks for bills, 4 in a row

Alex Cora said...

I'm sorry, I meant NINE K's!

Orel said...

KKKKKKKKK

Orel said...

Bills at 102 pitches.

koufax said...

werth(less) 0-3 3 ks

karina said...

Bills deserves to win this game, i hope the Dodgers don't pull a performance worthy of the Mets when Santana starts.

koufax said...

loney busting out the whooping stick!

Alex Cora said...

FJL - that homer was better than yesterdays!

Orel said...

LONEY
LONEY
LONEY

Erin said...

"In play, run(s)" for the first batter of an inning can only mean one thing!

Ryan said...

LONEY! BOMBA! He's heating up!!!

rbnlaw said...

This is welcome news. A hot Loney is just what we need.

Erin said...

Both times against lefties, correct?

karina said...

Who is complaining about King James lack of power now?

Orel said...

That stroke was bee-you-tee-full.

Orel said...

Correct, Erin!

rbnlaw said...

Let's go Beard Mode!

MR.F said...

LONEY!!!

Erin said...

Guess Bills is coming back out.

karina said...

I need to see that HR.

Orel said...

I guess Bills is pitching the seventh.

Alex Cora said...

Lyons just commented that the dodgers are giving away a Blake Bobblehead for the first 50,000 fans saying that it is a lot better than other promotions where they give out only to the first 15,000 fans. He is correct - that is a lot o' bobbleheads and pretty cool that they are giving away so many. That is almost one for everyone in the entire stadium.

koufax said...

according to collins the soft pretzle invented in philly

Erin said...

For as long as I've been going to Dodger Stadium (which, admittedly, has only been about four years), the bobblheads have gone to the first 50,000. I'm always grateful for that.

Orel said...

Bills is still touching 94, according to the TV radar.

Erin said...

*bobbleheads.

koufax said...

great range from raf

Orel said...

Vintage Furcal.

koufax said...

that was a strike

Alex Cora said...

Bills seems to be slowing down.

koufax said...

and its matt stairs

Orel said...

Did Bills unintentionally intentionally walk Ruiz there to knock Hamels out of the game?

rbnlaw said...

Just breathe. Just breathe.

Orel said...

PLUNK STAIRS

Snarktwain said...

Is it worth walking Ruiz to not face Hamels next inning?

Alex Cora said...

2 wicked breaking balls for strikes...

Snarktwain said...

There you go Orel, reading my mind before even I have.

rbnlaw said...

Gameday shows that last pitch as not making it to the plate. WTF?

Orel said...

The game went into Bullet Time?

koufax said...

well done bills great game

Alex Cora said...

PHEW - KEMP with the catch...

rbnlaw said...

How far did Stairs hit that?

MR.F said...

Phew.

Snarktwain said...

I just went Steiner on that ball when it left the bat. Scary for a second.

koufax said...

rbn, short of the track

Orel said...

"Went Steiner," nice TTF.

Alex Cora said...

Love it - went steiner - that should be on a t-shirt.

Unknown said...

I bet O-Dog Mode is happy to see Hamels gone

Orel said...

Hudson with the two-out single. Don't get caught CS, O-Dog!

koufax said...

garvey at dodger stadium june 15!

Booger said...

anyone warming up in the pen? or is Torre gonna stick with Bills?

Alex Cora said...

Ok andre - break out of the slump.

Snarktwain said...

Wade is in the pen.

Booger said...

im listening on XM right now and the Philly guys dont say too much

Booger said...

hopefully Wade doesnt implode like last week.

Steve Sax said...

I was listening to Steiner yesterday, cognizant of the fact he mixes up infield flies with home runs. But little did I know that he calls foul ball line drives the same way, as if they were doubles to the gap (I suppose they are to a gap, except it's a gap not on the playing field).

Steiner is crazy.

Booger said...

Torre's late inning pen should be as follows (ideally):

7th - Bellisario/Wade
8th - Troncoso
9th - Broxton

or use Troncoso for 7th & 8th

Steve Sax said...

AC/Erin, you are correct, bobbleheads have always been to 50K fans. 15K fans are usually for the kids or that smashbox moms' lipstick crap.

Steve Sax said...

Hey O-Dog, you gonna run any time soon?

Steve Sax said...

the tension for 200 is thick

Steve Sax said...

who's gonna get

Steve Sax said...

200

Steve Sax said...

YES!

koufax said...

hmmm could o dog have scored there?

Orel said...

Hudson TOTALLY could have scored there!
