Game 134 Thread: September 1 vs. Phillies, 12n

Clayton Kershaw (11-8, 3.01) vs. Roy Oswalt (9-13, 3.12).

As we turn the corner into the Dodgers' final month (save a stub series against fellow NL West cellar dweller Arizona in October), our team doesn't have a lot for which to play. But driving the Phillies batty by beating their pair of Roys (ace Halladay, bested by Kuroda on Monday; and rented ace Oswalt, who takes the mound today) would indeed be sweet. It ain't much, but at this stage, minor victories still count for something.

SoSG Sax will be sneaking out of work today to catch the businessperson's special, baking to death in the field level. Look for the guy sweating to death but insisting on another $12 beer for hydration.

Groundout. Not that I saw it. *curses MLB.tv*

Kyle Baker said...

Recommend the $19.50 double gin and tonic to stay cool, Sax.

rbnlaw said...

$19.50 fora 2x G&T???

Who do they think they are, the poolside bar at the Mirage? (where I paid $20 for a grande G&T and a grande pina colada for the missus)

Nostradamus said...

I'm pretty sure it was $17.50, but I coulda swam laps in it.

Kyle Baker said...

@RB

It was edgework, truly groundbreaking, for the hapless barkeep. They just doubled the regular price. But my ploy worked, as we ended up with a lot of gin (decribed earlier by MR C as a "small pool" which I think was an accurate and appropriate comparison). I have to say it was worth it.

Josh S. said...

Ugh. New work filters are killing my Blogger access.

Josh S. said...

Manny now 0 for 2 with a K looking.

Kyle Baker said...

@Josh

Did he argue balls and strikes?

Did he cut his hair?

Cut your hair, Manneh!

rbnlaw said...

With that size, the ability to make it last most of the game makes the drink a value.

Nostradamus said...

@rbnlaw

It lasted to the second inning. I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed (or both)

Josh S. said...

No haircut and no arguments.

Do you think this will silence the fools who keep saying Manny "quit on the Dodgers"?

(Hint: No. They love to hear themselves talk.)

karina said...

Seriously, between Manny and the White Sox, SoSG and Twitter, I'm not doing much.

karina said...

Epale everyone!

@Mr C no wonder you were asking for some kicking last night

karina said...

what does it mean "lemonade for grown ups" ad I saw when GameDay started?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Mike's hard lemonade. It has alcohol in it.

rbnlaw said...

I could use a grown-up lemonade about now.

My employer does not share this sentiment.

karina said...

Juan Pierre just had lead off double, sigh

rbnlaw said...

Just saw the blog post about the AG investigating Mc Court's charity and over-compensating his buddy, Sunkin.

Things just get brighter and brighter for the team!!!

MR.F said...

Work is killing me. I feel hungover except without the drunken escapades to show for it.

Nostradamus said...

@rbn

I was listening to a story on the trial last night on the way to the game. My emerging opinion is that it should go as badly as possible as quickly as possible, so it will force Frank's hand and they'll be forced by finances and MLB to sell the team. Just rip the band-aid off and get it over with.

Kyle Baker said...

Did I miss anything key in this Apple announcement, Josh?

rbnlaw said...

So, if the Dodgers follow MSTI's advice, we could see a fire sale that would make the 2008-09 Padres, A's, Orioles, and Indians blush.

Kyle Baker said...

Apparently Frank just got crucified on the stand today. Not going well for him. Apparently didn't go well for Jamie yesterday. Leading me to believe it's mutually assured destruction. Hopefully that will lead to the band aid gambit that Mr C just described.

Kyle Baker said...

Word that Ted Lilly and Dodgers mutually want each other, and will pursue an extension. I ain't hatin' that.

Nostradamus said...

@DB

Truth. In the end, I don't think either one of them have the solvency to run the team on their own. The sooner that is made clear, the better.

MR.F said...

Where are you getting your divorce court updates, DB?

Okay work has truly driven me mad. I instinctively wrote your initials as "dB" before I realized I wasn't talking about decibels.

Josh S. said...

Dusty: A whole bunch of stuff I won't be buying.

-Touchscreen Nano
-New Shuffle
-New Touch (with front camera and FaceTime)
-New Apple TV for $99 (all content, aside from Netflix and what you stream from your computer, is pay-per-view rental)

Kyle Baker said...

Podsednik LF
Carroll SS
Ethier RF
Kemp CF
Loney 1B
Blake 3B
Belliard 2B
Barajas C

rbnlaw said...

Mr. C and DB,
I like the Band-Aid gambit, especially if said adhesive bandage is being removed from a particularly sensitive and hairy area for both McCourts.

Both have enough of a sleeze factor to make each sufficiently hate-able.

Kyle Baker said...

@Mr F

From the Twitters. Specifically, the Dodger Divorce guy (does he have a real job?) and Molly Knight. Both are covering it live.

Kyle Baker said...

@RB

You mean the hair from Jamie's back?

rbnlaw said...

I think I know why there is so much Manny-hate in the MSM; most are jealous he got out before the imminent collapse of the empire.

Sort of like the guy who handed Nero the matches (this simile assumes matches were around in some form or another in 64 AD).

MR.F said...

I can't say I'm not enjoying how the McCourts are both getting owned.

MR.F said...

Thanks DB.

rbnlaw said...

DB,
Ed Zachary.

karina said...

the Sox de Blanco turned the tables! four runs in the eight

karina said...

@Josh I'm intrigued by the new Touch,though I need more details ( procrastination needs some boundaries)

Josh S. said...

Talismanny.

Josh S. said...

@karina: the Touch in intriguing because it has most of the features of the iPhone 4 (without a phone or 3G or GPS). It's a great product for people who don't want to commit to the iPhone as their primary cell phone. For those of us that already have an iPhone (I don't have the 4), it has limited appeal.

MR.F said...

While I could use a bigger iPod... I should try and make do(?) with what I have right now.

MR.F said...

It appears that the iPod touch is solid state only and only goes up to 32 GB (or 64 mayhaps?). If I wanted a bigger storage iPod, I'd have to go for a "classic"?

Josh S. said...

@Mr. F: Yup, and from the sound of things, the Classic may be phased out. They're all about the Touch now.

Josh S. said...

Dodgers and Lilly are working on a multiyear extension, per Rosenfail.

The saddest part is this:
"Rosenthal adds that Lilly wanted to sign with the Dodgers in the 2006-07 offseason, but they went with Jason Schmidt."

Kyle Baker said...

Josh, you need the requisite "DAMMIT" re Lilly news.

MR.F said...

@Josh S.,
Does that mean they're possibly phasing out hard drive based iPods altogether?

Josh S. said...

@Mr. F: It seems that way from the keynote, but it may just mean they're not making a "new" iPod Classic. The 160GB one is still available in the store, but it likely won't get any kind of upgrade.

Kyle Baker said...

@Josh

You seem to be hating on the rental model for video content. Not sure I mind it. But if I need to hate it, let me know so I can adjust. Lots of hate to go around.

kill Kill KILL!!!

MR.F said...

I don't really like the pay-per-view either. Just feels wrong, even if the net cost ends up being similar. It's something I'd try to avoid if at all possible.

Josh S. said...

@DB: Take Glee for example. On Hulu Plus, for $10/month, I can watch the whole last season as many times as I want. (Or on free Hulu, I can watch the 5 most recent eps for free.)

With Apple's model, it will cost me $21.78 to watch the entire season once.

Netflix streaming is only $8.99/month, though their content can be hit and miss. Apple seems to have the edge as far as new movies in their streaming catalog, but it will cost me $4.99 to rent each new release.

Kyle Baker said...

Right now I have Netflix through both Tivo and my Blu-Ray playa. I've loved having instant access to an icnreasing array of video content. It doesn't bother me in the least that I am only renting, not owning, such. Especially since, technically, I never owned the intellectual property in the first place. I turn de shizz on, I watch movie, I make party. Not sure why I should hate that. But then again, I am open to something if I'm missing a crucial piece...

MR.F said...

I'm thrilled with Netflix. Unlimited rentals are great. It's pay-per-view that is the ultimate fail for me. What am I going to do if I want to watch "Cool Runnings" over and over?

Kyle Baker said...

HAW!!! Cool Runnings. That is classic. (Not the movie; you're using it to comedic effect)

Kyle Baker said...

So it's the cost of repetitive ppv viewing that is the hangup, it seems. I get that.

Josh S. said...

Dusty, to be clear, I'm fine with not owning. I don't like paying each time I watch something.

*ignores the game*

Kyle Baker said...

Totally, Josh. Especially with TV content.

I just take this as developers dipping their toe in the waters to see what content delivery methods and pricing work; surely we'll see a lot of gyrations before things settle down. It's also laregly a function of old geezers at studios reluctant to embrace new realities.

I realize I'm paying Netflix 9 bucks a month to have access to a million things I'll never have time to watch. I just kinda like knowing that they're there, y'know?

Kyle Baker said...

@Mr C

A pub? I thought you were holed up in the Discovery headquarters in DC. My bad.

MR.F said...

I've been watching the X-Files on Netflix. Averaging about 2 episodes a night.

Alex Cora said...

Just reading all of the comments and I have to say netflix for the iPhone is pretty sweet. I watched district 9 on my phone yesterday. BTW. That cowboy redbull commercial was plain wierd.

Kyle Baker said...

Yeah, X-Files is blessedly available now on Netflix. Sounds like a sabbatical opportunity the more I think about it.

Nostradamus said...

Kyle Baker said...

Karina, you broke the seal! Booooo!

Now we actually have to comment about the game here.

karina said...

I can delete my comment and nothing has happened, all right?

MR.F said...

Oh no! It's okay. Everyone was just afraid of being the first person to post about the game. Now that you've posted, I no longer have that concern.

MR.F said...

Come on Pod and MSB! Sigh.

karina said...

I already deleted the comment

MR.F said...

But what am I supposed to do now? Delete all MY game related posts? =(

karina said...

off topic: I got a new follower on Twitter that writes things like this:

"Hve been a few months since I've been caked up with someone."

what does "caked up" mean

Kyle Baker said...

Oswalt is pitching brilliantly. I hope he keeps this up!

MeanieBreanie said...

Epale! I'm a little late. This thing called work got in the way. Judging by the score I haven't missed much.

Paul said...

No hitters are tough to keep up!!! Still lots of NO HITTERS THIS YEAR!!

Kyle Baker said...

Year of the pitcher!

karina said...

No Hitters stopped being amazing in 2009

Josh S. said...

Oh, sorry, Mr. F.

To explain, there's a new arts high school that opened last year in downtown L.A. It is, to this day, still being called "Central L.A. High School #9", which is a temp name given to all new schools while they are being built. I just think it's funny that they haven't been able to settle on a real name for the school.

And the reason I brought it up is because the school was mentioned in a radio ad (SHEET METAL WORKERS) during the game.

Moving on.

karina said...

If it's not perfecto, I'm not interested.

Thanks King James walked to ruin the perfecto

rbnlaw said...

Oswalt is a lock for a no-no, and I'm not even watching the game.

@karina,
I don't want to know what "caked-up" means when it's with someone.

I think he/she meant "hooked-up."

Either way, I'd unfollow them.

MR.F said...

I'm also unaware of what "caked up" means. Seems like Josh S. is the resident expert on these things so maybe he'd know.

Kyle Baker said...

@RBN

Would one say Oswalt is "flirting with a no-no?"

*ducks Josh's red editorial pen*

rbnlaw said...

@Josh,
I thought they were naming it along the lines of the Roosevelt Hotel that used to stand on those grounds.

I know another Kennedy High is not needed. Perhaps, Coconut Grove Ballroom and High School for the P.A.?

Kyle Baker said...

I don't know what caked up is, either...but it sounds fun!

Kyle Baker said...

Maybe they could name it Bullocks after the nearby landmark. And kids for generations could engage in witty wordplay on that name.

[This is the view out my office window]

Josh S. said...

@Rbn: There's another school opening on the Ambassador Hotel site this year. They are indeed naming it after RFK.

The school I'm talking about is the big metal one across from the cathedral. It opened a year ago.

rbnlaw said...

"frustrating ball-breaker for a third."

Sounds like my dating history prior to Mrs. rbnlaw.

MR.F said...

Still being no-hit. COME ON GUYS!

karina said...

@Rbnlaw hahahahahaha, I don't have high standards! I'm only saying No-Hitters are not my thing.

Josh S. said...

@Paul: I wish that was the lineup. They'd design a bat that could compensate for Pods' limp-wristed swinging style.

rbnlaw said...

@Josh,
Ooops. Meant Ambassador. Glad you translated.

Still, another Kennedy? I guess it's fitting. Eeerie, but fitting.

I think #9 should be named for the sheet metal workers' union.

Local #2764 High. Hours: 8:00 am - 11:30 am, 3 days a week.

karina said...

@Rbnlaw she's the one following me, she's a senior in high school and I'm just curious why she'd follow me.

Fred's Brim said...

Placido Polanco has a head like a flowerpot

Josh S. said...

Metal High School would also work, seeing as it's a performing arts high school.

Josh S. said...

@FB: *dies laughing*

MeanieBreanie said...

Placido's head looks about as thick as a brick.

Kyle Baker said...

Oh the former Amabassador site is the one I thought you were talking about.

Have you seen that? It's a massive building. How many friggin kids are there around here? Most I see are skating in the park and not in school.

Fred's Brim said...

Josh S. said...

The Ambassador site is going to house 5 separate schools.

@Josh Schippe had to tweet that, let's use social media to spread the jinx

MeanieBreanie said...

Karina -
Caked up per urban dictionary:

1. To be rich with money, fine women, nice cars and jewelry, usually obtained through sports, entertainment or the drug trade. ex. "Juice came through the block caked up, stuntin' in a new whip!"
2. In a woman, to be large bosommed, with thick thighs and a plump bottom. ex. "Cheryl got caked up over the summer. You see her ass and thighs?"

I'm going with option 1

Kyle Baker said...

Had to go to a mtg I forgot about. Has anyone yet hit a ball that has been thrown by Oswalt?

MeanieBreanie said...

The games not over but it's not looking good. We definitely have some major work to do. Where's our good mojo?

Josh S. said...

We apparently aren't going to get much help from the September call-ups.

MR.F said...

If we're gonna suck, why not call up Lindsey, just to give him the taste?

rbnlaw said...

I could use a trip to the Shortstop about now. Instead, a meeting.

karina said...

We got the bullpen!

Dave said...

Boy, that Podsednik can do it all. Misplay foul balls, kill rallies. Thank god we got rid of that useless Manny.

Veteran grittiness FTW!

Josh S. said...

From the crowd reaction, it sounds like a lot of Philly fans don't have jobs.

Josh S. said...

Yes, because Podsednik is the only one dragging this team down.

(Today, for sure, but not all the time.)

Nostradamus said...

@Dave

To be fair, this year's Manny did plenty of that, too. By which I don't mean to hate on the ghost of Manny any more than everyone else, but we didn't get this bad without pulling together and really sucking it up as a team effort.

Nostradamus said...

Josh and I are apparently of one mind on this.

MR.F said...

I was about to spell "FUCK THE PHILLIES" in a certain way, but I was afraid of implying a certain kind of bestiality.

Eric the Ice King said...

WTH? No call-ups? I guess that shows how much the Dodger higher-ups think their team needs the help.

I guess they will be bussed in or have to hitchhike here from ABQ so they will be too tired to help against the Gints even with the day off. :p

Eric the Ice King said...

And that Philly Phanatic might just like that..>.<
