Tommy Lasorda to Enter Smithsonian

Via SoSG Pedro Guerrero, a find from today's Sporting News (click on link here for picture):

The Smithsonian's National portrait Gallery will install a portrait of Tommy Lasorda on Sept 22, Lasorda's 82nd birthday, when the Dodgers begin a three-game series against the Washington Nationals in Washington, DC.

The painting measures 60 by 50 inches, if you're wondering how he fit. And it appears 60 inches is the height, surprisingly enough, rather than the width.

Congratulations, Tommy!

Awesome tribute, and more than well deserved.

At yesterday's game, I saw something funny. Loney was in the on-deck circle and a scuffed ball from the ump rolled his way. He took a look at it then tossed it up to Tommy, who was lounging in his customary seat. Tommy caught it, looked at it, made a comment to JLo that made him laugh, then flipped it over to Frank McCourt, surprising him somewhat. McCourt then gave it to an usher who walked it over to a fan several rows up. Don't know if it was a random fan or someone McCourt picked out.

Not really a point to this tale, but just thought it was an interesting meta part of the day, and involved Tommy being Tommy.

The cool thing is, Drew McCourt still has that baseball up on his bookcase, right next to his little league trophies.

I had hoped they would use the image from SOSG Lasorda's avatar instead.

Has anyone else gone to the Left Field Pavillion and listened to Tommy's legendary rants about Kurt Bevaqua and Jack Clark?

You will laugh. Long and lustily.

Fantastic honor, less than perfect likeness.

It looks like Jimmy Carter put on a few pounds.

The question that really needs to be asked is this. Does naming your child Everett Raymond Kinstler pre-qualify them for artistic notoriety?
