Jon Garland (9-11, 4.23) vs. Dan Haren (13-8, 2.78).
Dodgers' Magic Number: 20
COMMENTS: Garland returns to the mound in his second start as a Dodger, after beating his former team Thursday in what many said was an outstanding Dodger debut (7.0IP, 5H, 2ER, W). A star is born, perhaps? We'll see if the Garland touch extends to his second outing, and if he's got more fastballs in his summer stock to deliver, as he faces the Diamondbacks' ace, Dan Haren.
I could go on singing about how awesome it would be for Garland to win, the Rockies to lose, and the NL West lead open back up to 4.5 games before tomorrow's off-day, but I'll stop here. I don't want to be a clown.

I've got $20 to chip in towards bribing Torre to let Kemp hit lead-off again. If everyone puts in $20, we should have about $120 bucks to put in Big Joe's pocket.
C'mon Joe; money talks in this town, and 120 samolians talk pret-ty loud (if you know what I mean).
In.
I hate the Yankees. (See, Karina, it's easy...just let it flow) I'm glad to see Joba the Hut is already down 2-0 in the first with two men on and only one out. But then, he's only scheduled to pitch for what, 3 innings today? Or has he worked up to 4?
Raffy had been hitting better than kemp for the past week or so.
Magic number time already? Yay!
@DB
"I hate the Yankees"
You had me at hello.
I now forgive you for supporting Chelsea.
Mr. C- At least it's not ManU with me.
ManU=Yankees
@DB
We can certainly agree on that.
Magic number: Don Sutton
(and is that for the division, or the playoffs?)
That practically makes us brothers, Mr. C.
Giants already lost today, and the Cardinals already won. Rox will have a slight headstart on our game, so we should keep track of that one too.
sorry to be a pessimist
but tonight's game doesnt look in favor of the Blue crew
@DB,
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend"
Works for me!
Karina, you have some saintly competition:
http://tinyurl.com/ltqtxe
@Ken, come on dude, feel the positive warmth of your dayglo avatar!
I'm ready for a sweep.
I've got my broom out. Mrs. Dusty thinks I'm going to do some cleaning, but we all know it's a prop for tonight's game.
Damn, Ken. Way to kill the pregame mojo. I was dusting of my broom.
I got so carried away I dusted the last "F" off of my "Off".
It's all on you now, Ken, oh doomsayer.
Should I keep up the karma?
Just win baby, just win.
Thanks Neeebs! You more than canceled out Ken.
We all hate ManU? Oh good.
Still, I have mixed emotions seeing that Rooney scored today.
Let's see what he does in S. Africa.
@Nic:
Kemp bats over .400 when he leads off an inning. . .any inning. Just sayin'
@rbnlaw
Looks that way. We have representation for the less objectionable three of the big four.
At least Rooney's goal was an afterthought.
I assume, then, you support LFC, Mr. C?
@DB
Your suspicions are confirmed.
An that's why you wanna hate on Frankie, then, Mr. C.
Look on the bright side: The fact that both Gerrard and Lampard scored proves that they can play together.
Ace down! Per Dodger Thoughts:
"Randy Wolf to miss Friday start
September 9, 2009 | 5:11 pm
Randy Wolf, who has emerged as a stalwart of the Dodger rotation, had been scheduled to pitch Friday against San Francisco but now will miss that start with an irritated elbow, according to a note I just received from Dodger beat writer Dylan Hernandez of The Times. Hiroki Kuroda will make that start on four days' rest, followed by Vicente Padilla on Saturday and Chad Billingsley on Sunday.
Here's more from Joe Torre's conversation today with KABC's Charley Steiner.
"Randy Wolf went back home last night. He's got a little hitch in his elbow, which he thinks he got by swinging the bat. He got a little injection and everything should be fine. It feels find already, actually, and we'll see him in San Francisco over the weekend, but he will miss a turn.
"When he went to throw his bullpen (after his last start), he just felt something in the back of his elbow, and we just didn't waste any time. We sent him back home, and (Dr. Neil) ElAttrache saw him today and injected, and the results so far have been positive because he felt relief right away."
Dan Haren is not Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax. He's lost before and he'll lose again before the season's over.
All geared up for football season.
Damn wolf down now too? From what I've been reading kershaws shoulder might be a little more serious than a bruise.
What a great time to get the injury bug.
Wow, that is a hilarious picture. Well done.
Rox up 2-0 After 3.
Rox up 2 in the 4th.
Where is everyone? Watching the republican response to Obama's Joint Session address? Scared off by Ken's doomsaying? Assassinated? At BevMo? Gutted that France only drew? Checking out Jeter's night?
I think manny is going to gave a good night tonight. He owned Haren his last time out.
Didn't expect that!
Dare I say it, Raffy might be back boys!
Madson with the save for Phiwwy - not Lidge.
Hey, JL if you're out there:
Tweet from Beto Duran:
"Angels have won 4 of 5 and lots of fans came dressed as green seats. Empty. Sad"
Seriously, WTF happened to kemp? He has been so impatient for the past two weeks.
That was definitely the old Kemp who swung at that strike three pitch.
Jints lost at least.
As soon as Kemp does well, he gets full of confidence, and giddy, then starts thinking everything should be a HR and therefore gets impatient and swings at everything.
Please tell me we're not wasting a leadoff triple. Come on, Manny.
Already 0-2 with RISP.
I'll take it.
Hooray for bad hops!
Manny gets it done. With a little luck.
Thank God for Manny! 1-0 Dodgers
Garland looks good early (minus the walk).
Martin watches a pitch to hit go by and swings at a ball.
Reds just rallied for two runs to tie it, and they're still rolling with one out and a man on second. 2-2 in the top of the eighth.
Rox and Reds are tied!
Aw dammit
It's always the former Dodger or the venezuelan.
Damn
Aw for fuck's sake.
I blame you Ken.
Back to back jacks for AZ, and suddenly we're down 2-1. Shit.
I'm waiting for four-run rally.
It's still early. We've both given and gotten some punches. There's always a 4-run rally in us.
You have to wait till the 8th. Can we please focus on
trying to get harens pitch count up so he doesn't go 8 innings.
That's the opposite of what we should be doing.
Haren and Garland both coast through their respective third innings. 2-1 AZ.
Meanwhile it's still tied in Colorado.
It's gonna be one of those games.
1 pitch 1 out.
Shoot, Andre roped that one.
I have to run to the market, but I'll wait to watch Manny.
Neeebs made his part, i'll do mine:
Dodgers, learn about Neville:
"The slash of the silver blade could not be heard over the roar of the oncoming crowd or the sounds of the clashing giants or the stampeding "rockies", and yet it seemed to draw every eye. With a single stroke Neville sliced off the great snake's head, which spun high into the air...and the snake's body thudded to the ground"

Manny renews hope!
Seeeeeeeeee ya!!!!! 2-2
glad I stayed!!!
Manny owns haren
Good thing you waited, Sax.
Manny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My fever and headache suddenly don't hurt so bad.
Sax, while you're at it, stay for the inning. We could use the luck.
Sure are a lot of blue shirts sitting out there in right field...
Vin likes manny's body. Haha.
Ok, Vinny...enough about Manny's physique. It's starting to sound old-man creepy.
JLNAR!!!!!!
King James HR!!!!!!!!!!
Looooooooooooooooooooh-neeeeeeeeee
J-Lo!
Stile NONE at home. Hilarious.
Back 2 back, back at ya dbacks.
(that's alot of backs)
Give James Loney A Raise!!!
@Sax - That's what I've been saying
James Loney Needs A Raise
Does Reynolds just make easy plays look hard? There is no way he robs that many hits from us.
We sure hit Haren hard this inning. That's good.
Okay, beer run! Who needs anything?
Why don't the Las Vegas Business advertisements mention how cheap it is to buy your choice of palatial development homes out of foreclosure?
@Sax - Pick me up some flour. I'm working on a pie here.
Sax, see if they have any Octoberfest in yet (Spaten, Paulaner, etc) besides Sam Adams.
WTF is with Montero and killing the Dodgers?
Miguel Montero? WTlivingF is this punk-ass? Somebody stop him already.
Commies just went ahead.
@Dusty - Is it wrong to root for the Communists in this situation.
Mr LASF: do you really bake?
GIVE THAT MAN A GOLD GLOVE
way to go Raffy!
I have a feeling haren Is going to burn us right here.
Wowowow I'm glad I was wrong.
hoo mama!
way to wriggle off the hook there!
@Karina - How else could I enjoy homemade pies?
Sax have you left yet? could I get a sixer of Magic Hat?
Great time for Cordero to blow a save.
Damn Commies. Why must you always fail?! First the Cold War, and now this. You damn Reds can't do anything right.
crap - shoulda picked that one up
Ugh. Garland is not putting me at ease.
It's like the only way we gain any ground on the rox is when we beat them.
It doesn't come easy with garland.
crud, Garland cant stay out of trouble
that was a crappy way to lose a game, Commies
Crapola
dammit Belli2, clean it up
Mr. Furcal I thoughts you was gonna die I swear!
Can I welcome Furcal back yet?
Im not too sure we can continue to trade punches with haren pitching.
That was a quick way to get the second out. Dangerous, but quick.
Garland IBB's Montero to face Young.
Messrs. Ramirez and Loney, you are asked to repeat your earlier feat.
Eh, coulda been worse. Besides, if you said that Garland would have matched Haren run for run, I would have been content.
good work getting out of that
Happy Sandyversary, everybody!
Mrs Dusty and sis-n-law kidnapped me and forced me to to go to our local MEX cantina, drink some XX, and watch the game from here. Send help!!!
Wherefore art thou, Bison?
Kemp is slumping.
We really don't need that.
oh no Dusty! don't fill up on tortilla chips!
Mmm, dusty tortilla chips
Dammit. So close.
Damn loney almost had his second homer.
Loney's definitely making better contact these days.
I gotta turn in. I trust you ghoulies to get us this win
great work
Hot dog, a hit.
Wow that was high Martin
Eye-chart hitting with some pressure.
@Dusty Naker let's have Santa Ritas as a Saint, i'll be an angel.
Turning Amish has not helped Russell's plate performance.
Martin should be able to create some spark in his bat. After all, who knows more about electricity than the Amish?
This is high stakes for Manny.
Well, this is kind of a big at bat for Manny here.
Crap.
Always the venezuelan...go King James!
Is James gonna break the chains?
Ugh, Manny. Just a single here will do, Jimmy.
Ugh. That was awful.
Eff ALL of that.
It's unfortunate that manny had a pretty good night but people are probably just going to remember that K.
Well, that didn't go so well.
I don't know what makes me feel worse, that last wasted inning, or watching the Ghoulies trailer.
Yeah, I'm back from the market. I was there so late they closed off one of the entrances with a line of shopping carts.
At least the self-scan thingies were working.
We're eating fajitas this week.
I wouldn't mind taking 2-3 here if Colorado would lose a game once and a while.
I also couldn't resist the extreme pringles dill pickle flavor. I've never tried it. You only live once.
Are we breezy like Sunday morning?
Belly leadoff walk isn't good. Here comes Sherrill.
Oh my gosh, that Norm's commercial is horrendous. If you're not in the local area to catch that local commercial, consider yourself lucky.
@Sax - Which one? Is it the one where the couple are just skeletons? 'Cause that's the one I hate.
When is the last time manny had a double. It's been homerun or single lately.
@NicJ, aka Gob on a Segway: Yeah, I totally agree with you on the Rocks rolling. Cards too. I suppose they both could win out and then we would have to play the Cards with the WC.
@Mr. LA SF: It was the Norm's commercial with the grandpa taking his precocious granddaughter with the weird hair color and the grandson who couldn't give a flying f' and then asks at the end, "what's responsibility and tradition mean"?
Cue laugh track. Ha ha ha ha ha
I mean, come on, everyone associated with that commercial should be shot. Starting with the third-grade student who wrote it.
Two on, none out. Great.
Sax
ughhh I am feeling like I ate at Norm's.
Breezy is not making this eezy
@Paul, I am feeling like Norm himself at this rate
Nice play FJL / GJLAR to get the guy at third.
Give King James a Gold Glove, please.
Nice play by loney.
Ryal up, uh oh.
Uh oh Rusty Ryal.
@Mr. LASF: That Norm's commercial has an alternate version where the couple doesn't turn into skeletons. That was the one I had been seeing for the longest time, so when I saw the skeletons version, I thought I had lost my mind.
Hey Vinny what was the Rockies score?
@Sax - Every Norm's commercial is a testament to bad acting.
Mr. Casual, Ronnie Belliard.
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice play Belliard
Wow, I can't believe we got out of that. 3-3 tie through 8.
@Josh - Clearly Norm's is not where life happens.
Wow, Sherrill meant for him to hit it there.
Whew, that was a sticky situation.
@Josh S, I hear you--Ronnie was indeed pretty cavalier there for such a close play.
See fastball hit fastball
O dog is due.
Is Thome available yet?
Did I read that Dusty is somewhere is Mexico hunting down Hermano?
Extra innings, here we come.
Hey brother.
Herrrrmano!
As soon as Ramon picked up that ball, I knew it was sailing wide. Way to go, tron tron.
You no good scruffy lookin nerf herder!!
There ain't no extras at this rate. Man on second, none out.
Ramon Troncoso,
Why do you blow so?
Back from the cantina. Didn't miss anything since I was watching in the bar.
If I actually wanted to eat at that shithole C-level chain called Norm's, where the fuck would I go? I have NEVER actually seen one in existence, and I get around.
Even if I knew where to go, I wouldn't go based on their shite commercials. They make me want to bite the head off a kitten.
That seems about right.
Well, this is a loss.
shit, not shot
Well at least there is a good chance the rox will lose tomorrow, a four game sweep is pretty tough.
187 comments, cause this is a killah
Way to go Tron. Now we have to face the second-best homer-hitter in the NL with the bases loaded.
Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
Now, winning the SF series this weekend will just barely keep us afloat and actually HELP the Rox lock up the WC.
Josh S, how we doin'? Is it time to send that kid off to boarding school yet?
THROW A FRIGGIN' STRIKE
Dusty, he's napping enough to allow me to participate in game threads.
As I type that, he stirs.
This does not feel look or sound good
I hate you Tron. So much.
That one's all on Tron. DAMMIT!!!
Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away.
Troncoso is the worst pitcher in our bullpen. Is there any dispute to this or is Torre content on being mediocre?
I guess it's easy for Tron to inheret the "worst bullpen pitcher" mantle now that Mota is on the DL and J-Mac threw a scoreless frame yesterday. I wouldn't go as far to say that he's the worst, but tonight's not winning him any points.
I'm just a schlub sitting on the sofa, but I don't understand the bases-loaded walk in that scenario. How fuckin hard is it to jus throw it straight and hard? Make the batter hit it. Why throw balls or try to place it/finesse it? If he beats you, he beats you the right way. Pffffffffftttttttt.
Why did you have to throw troncoso and now we pay. That walk was just wrong and so I long for yesterday ya ya ya.
post-game thread up
