Game 139 Thread: Sept 7 vs. Rattlers, 12:40p

Vicente Padilla (9-6, 4.72) vs. Max Scherzer (9-8, 4.10).

COMMENTS: So much for the soft part of the schedule. While the Rockies are beating the teams they're supposed to beat, the Dodgers are alternating wins and losses like a three-card Monte dealer on meth. What was supposed to be a September cakewalk has turned into the pie-eating contest scene from Stand by Me. Although SoSG Sax tells us the Dodgers still have a 99% chance of making the playoffs, time is running out for the bats to awaken from their hibernation. This limp to the finish line could be curdling a sweet season. Bah.

Just noted the GT pic. Are you implying that lately our offense has been a complete and total barf-o-rama?

Dusty - that all sounds so familiar.

Stand by Me? Isn't that the one where the kids go looking for a dead body?

Steve Sax said...

Corey Feldman is a jerk, FWIW.

Bloody Mary! Great idea, Dusty!

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers will break out for seven runs today.

Fred's Brim said...

agreed Neeebs - we have gotten to the point in the season where you have to grind out the wins and not care so much how they come. the 2-1 win where you score your runs on a wild pitch or a GIDP should be appreciated just as much as a 9-1 win where everybody gets a hit, scores a run or gets an RBI

Dusty Baker said...

STAND BY ME is one of my favorites. I challenge all comers to a quotation contest involving the movie. *puffs chest*

Is Lard-ass a metaphor for Broxton?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I thought Corey Feldman was in the Goonies.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Whoops, I guess he's in both.

Let's puke all over the Snakes.

Hey, DB: Wanna see a dead body?

Dusty Baker said...

Here's hoping we don't lose, giving the PGT author the possibility of using the phrase "You're making me fuck up the Snake part" in the post's title.

Dusty Baker said...

@RB

Well, I was under the porch digging...

Steve Sax said...

@Rbnlaw: you're hungover, too?

Were we at the same party last night? I had to pray to the porcelain gods at the end...

Dusty Baker said...

For Sunday day games, or for holiday day games, we should have a SoSG Hangover Brunch.

rbnlaw said...

Sax, that was you in the bathroom?
I was at the HG casino until 1 am playing poker and having a few pops. Before that, it was the family BBQ and a boatload of good wine.

Just now listened to Vin's call of Gibby's HR from the 88 Series. Got the chills

Dusty Baker said...

Vinny just said Kershaw hurt his shoulder in practice and will definitely miss his upcoming start.

God friggin shit dammit.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

@Dusty - All of a sudden the Garland pickup looks pretty damn good.

Dusty Baker said...

"Six-man rotation? I meant five."

Dusty Baker said...

More on Kershaw: Bruised his RIGHT shoulder, not left, so that's initial good news.

Raffy leads off the traditional way.

Furcal doesn't want to wait to suck. He's got to do it right away.

Great lead off job there Furcal

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

It's gonna be one of those games, isn't it?

karina said...

It's not fair i'm working with flu traces and you're talking about Bloody Marys and hangovers (though i've only had a hangover in my life). Guess revenge will serve on the weekend.

Crossing fingers they'll kim las culebras.

@Dusty - "Come on guys lets get moving". "Yeah by the time we get there the kid won't even be dead anymore"

Dusty Baker said...

@ GLG:

"...goin' to see a dead kid—maybe it shouldn't be a party."

karina said...

Dodgers, learn about Neville:

"The slash of the silver blade could not be heard over the roar of the oncoming crowd or the sounds of the clashing giants or the stampeding "rockies", and yet it seemed to draw every eye. With a single stroke Neville sliced off the great snake's head, which spun high into the air...and the snake's body thudded to the ground"

Dusty Baker said...

Niiiiiice!!!! Snakes running bases like...us!

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

The base coaches want out I guess.

Dusty Baker said...

@ Karina

Just what the doctor ordered on the quote and avatar. I thought that was either Neville or Ethier when he was 11.

Gagne's lucky glasses said...

Dusty Baker said...

Did we go back in time? Is this April 19th?

karina said...

It is JK Rowling magic through Neville...

I edited some parts of it, it wasn't Rockies but centaurs and cut Voldemort's reaction.

Believe in magic, gents.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Scherzer's lost it.

karina said...

King James is back :)

Dusty Baker said...

I'll believe in magic, voodoo, unicorns, or any damn thing if it will help us get through this bad patch!

Dusty Baker said...

Leave Scherzer in!

fanerman said...

That home run should put Loney's slugging percentage ahead of the power bat Beast that is Juan Pierre.

Dusty Baker said...

Big Russ gets in on the action!

Read some more Harry Potter, Karina!

karina said...

Fanerman, of all people on this blog, i thought you believed in magic.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Three runs are better than none.

karina said...

@Dusty Baker if i come up with some magic., i'll post it.

Steve Sax said...

You just keep those wild pitches coming, Max!

3-0 Good Guys.

karina said...

@Mr LASF don't wanna get excited so you don't get disappointed?

Steve Sax said...

Just saw the video of the two snacks getting nailed on the basepaths. Hilarious!

Dusty Baker said...

Two snacks on the basepath? I think Broxton gobbled them up.

Dusty Baker said...

Nice throw, JMart!

Steve Sax said...

Reds just took the lead on the Rockies 3-1 in the
fourth.

The Giants' Brad Penny is pitching , top 1 no score

Dusty Baker said...

Tons of Doyers fans at the game today. Love how a guy wearing a Manny t-shirt ran down the tunnel and got Manny's HR ball.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

There goes Manny.

Dusty Baker said...

Manny, you dumbass.

Erin said...

I'm not a Manny apologist, but that did seem like an unreasonably quick trigger from the ump. I just have a feeling that sort of thing happens because of who he is, not just what he does.

Dusty Baker said...

Not that you can let your emotions go like that and let your teammates and fans down, but Manny was dead right about that 2nd called strike - it was not a strike.

Erin said...

A lot of guys toss their helmets toward the dugout after a strikeout. They don't all get thrown out of the game. He didn't even toss them particularly hard.

Dusty Baker said...

Baseball umps should not start acting like NBA refs, and making calls strictly based on reputation.

Erin said...

Exactly, DB.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

The D-Backs have two hits and a walk, yet they have been retired in order.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

BELLY 2.0!

Dusty Baker said...

Why was Kershaw shagging fly balls in the outfield?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I want blood.

karina said...

Thanks for the insight, Erin and Dusty.

By the way Erin, i met a man last Friday who is a fan of the Dodgers and the Red Sox and he's against all things Yankees. He asked if i thought it was weird, i said "not at all" and thought about you.

Dusty Baker said...

This one could ugly before it gets pretty. I hope so. Time for Padilla to start plunking!*

*But wait until 7th inning after he's ready to leave.

karina said...

@Mr LASF me too, in the gore films kind.

Dusty Baker said...

There is no question that he threw at JMart.

karina said...

Parra's great catch?

Dusty Baker said...

It was a great catch, Karina. It will make the highlight reels.

Erin said...

Karina, that sounds like the perfect man. You should have married him immediately.

Dusty Baker said...

I want to go to the Lone Butte Casino.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

There went that opportunity.

karina said...

@Erin i don't think so, he was introduced to me by my ex-boyfriend's father, he looks like very married and has grandchildren.

karina said...

Gerardo Parra is one of my favorite players these days...he and Carlos Gonzalez, i know it's bad...

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Aw dammit

Erin said...

Weird that Belliard just let that ball go. Sure looked like he backed off because he thought Furcal would get it, but then Furcal didn't.

And now the Dodgers pay the price with a two-run homer.

Nic j said...

Young saves all his HR's for the end of the year.

Dusty Baker said...

@ Erin

That's exactly what I noted, that Belly #3 backed off and surprised Furcal.

Mini-Manny, indeed.

Nic j said...

Homeruns are nice, but we are still only 1-5 with RISP, let's improve that guys.

Erin said...

Giants are managing to score some runs against San Diego. 6-0 right now.

karina said...

@Nic j remember Fred's Brim wise words "we have gotten to the point in the season where you have to grind out the wins and not care so much how they com"

Dusty Baker said...

Russ, that's all you could do, after Scherzer called you a "fucking asshole" on the telly after that testy inning? Embarrassing. Either charge the mound or knock it out of the park (preferably the 2nd option). Don't just ground weakly up the middle.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Two away

karina said...

*we need a double play*

Dusty Baker said...

Just had to run to the bathroom. Told the fam to keep the game going (not pause it) and I'd catch up. It was right when Padilla had allowed 2 runners with no outs. Bullpen was getting ready.

From the bathroom down the hall, I could hear Mrs. Dusty and sis-in-law yelling "Noooo! Not Elbert!"

I hurried up and returned to make sure that Torre hadn't lost his mind. Thankfully he had not.

Come on Padilla, get us out of this. I believe in you.

Dusty Baker said...

Deuces wild, Vinny, deuces wild.

karina said...

Anything new on Kershaw?

Dusty Baker said...

@ Karina

The fine people at SoSG have a post now:

http://www.sonsofstevegarvey.com/2009/09/kershaw-to-miss-next-start.html

Erin said...

It's funny, I would have had a scoop on the Kershaw thing if I had paid more attention. We were by the bullpen at yesterday's game, and Christine heard Flippo, the bullpen catcher, telling a friend of his that someone had hurt his right shoulder. Christine didn't hear the name, and I didn't hear any of the exchange at all.

Nic j said...

Rox tie it up at 3

Dusty Baker said...

@ Erin-

How did the Japanese good luck shouted at Hiro go yesterday?

karina said...

@Dusty i'm working so i just refresh the GT page.

Erin said...

Christine was too embarrassed to do it. By the time I realized she wasn't going to, he was too far away for me to give it a shot.

Dusty Baker said...

@ Karina

I wasn't giving you any grief about not look at the main page, by the way! Just pointing it out. :-) Sadly, I usually keep both the GT and the main page open in two different tabs, in case I might miss something life changing.

karina said...

Gotta go, i have to pick up Coper, if i have to leave him home and going to the printer, i think the game will be over by the time i come back.

Enjoy Labor Day! Go Blue!

Dusty Baker said...

Time to bust this oldie out:

I used to run base like Juan Pierre/
Now I run the bass hi hat and the snare

Nic j said...

Alright now steal home!

Erin said...

I, too, am leaving. Gotta go to a (lame) BBQ. I'll be checking in to see if the Dodgers hold on to the lead.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Yes! Upton is stinking it up just in time!

Neeebs said...

Belli one shy of the cycle.

Erin said...

Right before I turned off the TV, Scully gives me something to chuckle about for the rest of the afternoon. Regarding Upton's failed attempt at that catch:

"...a diving, rolling failure."

Neeebs said...

Russell Martin redemption at bat.

Dusty Baker said...

Ah, I hadn't noted that re Belli #3, Neeebs. Thx.

Russ, you have a chance (again) to really show up Sherzher. Make it work!

Neeebs said...

Why would anyone slide head first into home?

I'll take the run, though.

Dusty Baker said...

I will take the run. But man, Loney has to be the slowest professional ball player I've ever seen. The camera caught him starting his run from 3rd to home, and it looked like in Scooby Doo where Scooby runs in place for awhile before he actually gets going forward.

Neeebs said...

Base hit here would be sweet.

Neeebs said...

New nick for Loney, Scooby Dooooooo

Dusty Baker said...

Loney actually kinda resembles Scooby if you look at them a certain way.

PhotoShop opportunity!

Dusty Baker said...

Flat Breezy in tha heezy!

Nic j said...

Rox take a late lead 4-3

Dusty Baker said...

This was Loney's head-first slide:

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Sherrill's in some trouble.

Neeebs said...

How did they get a photo of the headfirst slide on the net so quickly?

Dusty Baker said...

Nice K from John Mower, and nice pitch calling from JMart.

Nic j said...

Reds just ran themselves out of a ninth inning rally. Rox win.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I hate the Reds so much.

Nic j said...

Good to see kemp get a hit, his avg has been in a freefall since September started.

And he steals a bag!

Dusty Baker said...

31 steals for Bison. Lovin' it.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Just two more outs to go.

Dusty Baker said...

Pausing from snark and smack talk for a moment...

What a beautiful story from Vinny as Pierre stepped up to bat. He started with a re-cap of the fact that JP had stolen 2nd and 3rd in his last sequence, and was reminded of Jackie Robinson. Then Vinny went into a little vignette about how in Jackie's early days, "in Pittsburgh if I remember," and the fans "were all over him." Vinny was classy enough not to bring up the fact that "all over him" meant yelling racial taunts at #42. He went on to say that despite those taunts, Jackie stole 2nd, stole 3rd, then he stole home.

I treasure every call of the game by Vinny. He is such a bridge between the then and the now.

Hats off to Vinny, to Jackie, and to JP.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

That's your ballgame

Dusty Baker said...

To end the GT STAND BY ME theme, and I paraphrase:

"I never had any broadcaster later on like the one I had when I had Vinny. Jesus, does anyone?"

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers score seven runs, which I called at 10:54am.

Who needs Sax in Vegas this week?
