Time to Dogpile on the Sax

Okay, I just turned down box seats to the Lakers-Nuggets game tonight.

I know, it's bizarre behavior. I'm honestly not exactly sure if I'm thinking correctly. After all, there is no Dodger game tonight, and I'm likely going to be home watching the second half of the Laker game anyway. But my wife isn't much of a Laker fan, and she wasn't interested in going, so I just figured I'd pass, and spend time hanging out with the kids, playing with a wooden train set or reading books or letting me get covered in stickers. And strangely, I don't feel all that bad about declining the invitation.

Now if it was a Dodger game suite, I'm almost certain I'd go. Is that insane? Especially with the Lakers in the playoffs, and the Dodgers in month #2? Maybe it's because I've been to box seats at Staples plenty of times before, and the box experience, in my opinion, isn't great. Staples Center is so cavernous, that being in a box is sort of like being on the moon sometimes. I've been lucky enough to have floor seats at Staples, and I've been to tons of games seated in the lower level.

I grew up being a Laker fan, and I like the Lakers. I'll root for them, especially now that we're deep in the playoffs. But I don't follow them as closely anymore, and I only go to a couple of Laker games a year, so I don't have the same kind of passion for them as I do for the Dodgers.

So go ahead. Since we have an off-day, I figure you guys probably need a place to vent anyway. Tell me what a fool I am.

Hey Sax, you're not a fool. lol I'm also a Lakers fan and I'm sure I was a Lakers fan first than a Dodger fan. Back in the late 80's was my time. Showtime baby! I do follow them but not on a daily basis.

It's crazy enough to be a hard core Dodger fan lol

Keep up the great work guys :)

Orel, you shouldn't talk about Roberto that way. I like him.

I sure hope you really love your kids Sax.

The funny thing is, they aren't even my kids. They just show up on my front lawn every afternoon.

In all seriousness, I do love my kids, dearly. And much more than the Lakers.

But not the Dodgers, right? I mean they may be cute, but they are no Matt Kemp.

Ya, I agree that once you've sat in Staples Center box seats a dozen or so times and chatted up Jack Nicholson about his latest movie and hung out with numerous Hollywood stars, it gets boring after a while. I'd refuse the seats too.

I figure I'm close to being one of the oldest around here, so some of you may not remember the Laker heydays like me. I grew up in Westchester, right down the street from LMU. LMU is where the Lakers used to train in the summer and early fall (before they got all uppity and went to Hawaii and El Segundo). Anyway, we used to hang around the gym hoping to sneak in or get an autograph. We met players like Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, Happy Hairston, Keith Erikson, Pat Riley, and even Wilt. It was why I became a Laker fan and continued being a Laker fan through the 80's and into the early 90's. I lost interest when Magic retired. . .the first time, and completely lost interest when they opened Staples.

The Forum was where fans could see each other and rub elbows with Jerry Buss because his box was right above the concourse. I wouldn't go to Staples if I had seats next to Jack (OK, I would, but I need to sound hardcore here). On the other hand, I'll take a pair of free upper deck tickets to almost any Dodgers' game and even buy a couple of beers at the Shortstop.

So, yeah Sax, I get it. Besides parking's like 50 bucks around Staples.

I like the subtle Terminator Salvation thing. It would have been cool to have a Matt Kemp "Robot Made of Nails" tie-in, but I don't know how that would work and I've been out of town (or in town, depending on how you look at it).

Oh yeah, and the obligatory: "you fool!"

Missing a Lakers game is nothing like missing a Dodgers game! No comparison. Now that my boys have left Florida, I will never get to see them again!

Sorry to hear that, DY. Have you ever been to Dodger Stadium?

whoa whoa whoa people, the lakers may have gone high class and my team to my grave is the dodgers, but for the love of all the haters (of which I'm fending off here at the bar in Boston) where is the solidarity?

I went to hundreds of dodger games before sneaking into my first lakers game (game 6 2000 finals) but the lalers are dinnertime tv just the same and there is nothing sweeter than when the both of them are at the top of their games a la 1988! On that note I need another beer!

ugh, that outcome sucked. Glad I didn't go.

I thought I was the only one who was having similar feelings. I still root for the Lakers, but if they lose, it just doesn't bother me the same way that a Dodgers' loss bothers me. Was depressed for a few weeks following the NLCS last year. I can never imagine getting that down about the Lakers. I'm guessing it has to do with watching them win it all a bunch of times in my lifetime while I only have 1988 when it comes to the Dodgers. Anyway, I probably would have taken the tickets, but only because I've never been to Staples for a Lakers' game.
