You heard me. Go Padres! The Swinging Friars are on fire, having completed sweeps of the Reds, Giants and Cubs to win nine straight. With a 22-22 record, they're currently 7.5 games behind the first-place Dodgers.
How is this a good thing for Dodger fans?
Because it complicates the Padres' ability to unload Jake Peavy, which they've been trying to do for months. Giving up Peavy means giving up on the division—which the Padres shouldn't even contemplate if they're within shouting distance of the Dodgers.
That won't stop the rumors, though. Deals to the Braves and Cubs fizzled during the off-season, and Peavy's pickiness just scuttled a trade to the White Sox. Now the Brewers are the destination du jour. As Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel puts it:
But, as suitors fall by the wayside because of Peavy's no-trade rights, the cost eventually could come down. Peavy backed the Padres farther into a corner by vetoing the White Sox trade and making it clear he prefers to stay in the National League.
So keep streaking, San Diego. Every Padres victory, combined with that no-trade clause, decreases Jake Peavy's trade value. Which means that the Padres are winning now at the expense of their own future.
