Game 32 Thread: May 10 @ D'backs, 6:30p

Chad Billingsley (2-2, 5.06) vs. Rodrigo Lopez (1-1, 4.14).

COMMENTS: It was an Iron Man kind of weekend:

  • "Iron Man 2" (capsule review: great start, disappointing finish) made $133.6 million.
  • Iron Man Shogun Rua needed only 3:35 to KO the previously undefeated Lyoto Machida to take the UFC light heavyweight championship.
  • Clayton Kershaw threw 73 of his 117 pitches for strikes, going an Iron Man-esque eight innings in which he allowed two hits and struck out nine.

Question is, can Billingsley follow Kershaw's smash with a worthy sequel performance of his own? Or will Arizona's bats right-hook him out of the game? Although Billingsley allowed four runs in the first inning of his last start, he stopped the bleeding and managed to make it through the dreaded sixth inning. The Diamondbacks just got swept by the Brewers, allowing 26 runs in the process. The situation is ripe. Here's hoping Chadley can say to the Snakes, "You complete me!"*

Also: Lakers go for the sweep of the Jazz at 7:30p PT on TNT. GOPAG!

*Not even in the movie, by the way.

It pretty much had the same ending as the first one (at least the final fight, anyway), but since that was also the weakest part of the original, I see your point.

Jason said...

Accuscore has the Dodgers pitchers completing only 8.5 innings. Apparently FJL will get his change to pitch to a few batters to make up the difference.

Orel said...

Also, surprisingly little action for an action film. But Sam Rockwell's weapons-selling speech was great.

So, Haeger has Planter's fascism? That's nuts.

@Josh S. 3:58p: With that lineup, it's a good thing they're playing at Chase Field, where there isn't a "no pepper" restriction.

LET'S DRINK!

Josh S. said...

"LET'S DRINK!"

And then hand over the blog to our best friend when we can't handle it anymore!

And then the blog will give him headaches and make him crazy!

MR.F said...

Seems like I can piece together much of the Iron Man 2 plot from comments in this thread.

Kyle Baker said...

You just saved yourself $13.50, Mr. F!

Steve Sax said...

@Josh S 4.25p: Are you saying I look like this?

Josh S. said...

Maybe after this past Saturday's game, yeah.

Josh S. said...

I paid $15, but I did get to pick my seat ahead of time.

(Which my wife had to tell me to stop doing before we went in the theater.)

Josh S. said...

Man, I'm dropping gross comments today.

(Actually, I'm well short of 144.)

Kyle Baker said...

Wait, she doesn't want you to pre-pick your seat? Did you go to ArcLight? You know they just converted the Pacific Theatre at Paseo Colorado in Pasadena to an ArcLight. Which is cool, because the only way I can stomach some movies that Mrs Dusty makes me go see is to have a few cocktails during the show.

Kyle Baker said...

OHHHHH! I get it.

Steve Sax said...

i got it, but i'm not happy about the resulting visual

Steve Sax said...

speaking of which, can we please get this game started?

Kyle Baker said...

When does this flippin' game start already? I'm hungry, thristy, irritable, and bored.

Pretty much same as every day, I guess.

Hey, I saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Saturday and only paid $8.00. Such a deal.

Nostradamus said...

@Josh 4:21p

Is it just me, or is it getting a little salty in here.

Kyle Baker said...

@ Neeebs

You paid $8 for a girl with a dragon tattoo this Saturday? Man, I should hang out with you more on the weekend.

Kyle Baker said...

Mr C, Josh-

Go to your rooms.

Kyle Baker said...

Just saw what the Empire Strikes Back My Town poster looks like. It's aight.

@DB:

Did I mention to you that she is a bi-sexual, flat chested, heavily pierced, Swede?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Let's just start our own new thread. Out of a box of scraps. With Captain America's shield as support.

Kyle Baker said...

@Neeebs

That explains the $8 bargain basement price.

Josh S. said...

Hrmmm...on my iPhone, that poster looks like a Photoshop hackjob.

I still want it though. That's how I roll.

Kyle Baker said...

@Josh

Oh yeah, I totally want the poster. Just wasn't blown out of the water.

Nostradamus said...

What, they couldn't have done yellow block letters receding?

Nostradamus said...

Why is our management incapable of grasping the obvious? Can't we skip back to Clayton on normal rest with the off day on Thursday, anyway?

Jason said...

@Dusty 5:30 - Don't forget, Drew McCourt was probably involved in the poster design. Just be glad it doesn't feature Spock.

Josh S. said...

Speaking of ticket prices, I need to go back to watching flicks at the Vista. Cheap tix (relatively), great sound, historic site, and about a square mile of legroom. Can't beat it.

Josh S. said...

Drew McCourt presents My Town: Star Track.

Steve Sax said...

I do not understand Torre's (or Colletti's) fascination with Ramon Ortiz. If we keep shoving him out there, he's bound to have a decent inning or two sooner or later. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Steve Sax said...

Drew McCourt would have Ewoks on the ESB poster, too.

Steve Sax said...

Good thing Nancy Bea doesn't have a sheet music arrangement for the yub yub song

Orel said...

42 comments an hour before gametime? Must be Monday.

Kyle Baker said...

42!

Josh S. said...

I firmly believe Ewok hate is a product of the internet. I don't remember anyone complaining about them when the film came out. Now it's cool to bash them.

(OK, so I was 9 then, but still, I knew grownups with taste.)

MR.F said...

I also didn't realize Ewoks were so hated until the internet. Of course I was also born after RoTJ was in theaters.

Kyle Baker said...

I agree, Josh. I remember thinking they were decently cool enough, especially where they lived.

I think Ewoks have just come to be a metaphor for the over-commercialization that began to represent the franchise, thus the internet hate.

Kyle Baker said...

Time for the dreaded drive home, a time in which comments I want to post on the GT pile up and make me unbearably uncomfortable.

Paul said...

The ewok hatred was propaganda by Jar Jar Binks

Man exercising and commenting is harder than I thought.

Try to look cool Paul. Try to look cool. I am not typing about Ewoks.

Casey Lombardo said...

Ewok hate became widespread after "Clerks."

Steve Sax said...

Hmm, looks like we've got a sticky Wicket of an argument here.

I seem to recall the Jar Jar vitriol to be circles-of-hell more than Ewok hatred. But that said, when Lucas re-released RotJ and got rid of the Ewok song and fur-dominated ending, it was almost a self-admission that the Ewoks were not one of the movie's highlights.

Now, if he releases I - III without Jar Jar footage, meesa gonna DIE!

Steve Sax said...

You Iron Man 2 viewers: thumbs up or down on ScarJo?

Paul said...

The Ewoks started it by hating clerks in their movie battle for Endor.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Thumbs up. Way up. Way way up. So up there's a hole in my roof roughly the size of the holes in my walls.

MR.F said...

I suppose I can't piece together ScarJo from this thread.

Josh S. said...

I say thumbs up on ScarJo. Her character wasn't remotely necessary, but she did a good job with what was given. Just don't expect comic Black Widow. Her fight scene was simultaneously awesome and (unintentionally) hilarious.

Casey Lombardo said...

She was very good at having a really nice face and body. That's about it.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Casey - You left out the part were she kicks ass. Lots of ass. About roughly 12x the ass that Happy kicks.

Steve Sax said...

let's go, Dodgers

clap clap, clap-clap-clap

Steve Sax said...

That, and looking awesome in a catsuit.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boy, here we go.

Steve Sax said...

First inning recap

Russell Martin, one pitch one out
Matt Kemp, three pitches one out
Andre Ethier, two pitches one out

This is not a very good inning for us, no?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Well, it is double the amount required.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Chad's getting squeezed by the ump. And his strike zone is small too.

karina said...

Game Thread started with Iron Man 2 capsule reviews. Then I felt confused because Josh said he was making gross comments, then Dusty and Sax get it and then Sax says it's not a pleasant image. Meant to ask but something tells me in this case, ignorance is a blessing.

Then, you discussed Ewoks. Maybe i'm gonna lose some Star Wars fandom cred but i love them with all my heart and one of my most precious wishes is uncle George releases the original trilogy in their original splendor. Also, i never got why Jar Jar Binks received so much hate in Episode I.

You're the most interesting bunch of people ever.

Kyle Baker said...

Is Bills having his meltdown for his next start during this start?

Steve Sax said...

Two on, but none score and Chad notches two Ks.

0-0 after 1

Kyle Baker said...

That pretty much sums it up, Karina. Nice re-cap thus far.

Some would call us interesting. Others would have more critical words to describe us.

Steve Sax said...

DB, Chad hung tough like a NKOTB!

Kyle Baker said...

Manny - one pitch, out

Steve Sax said...

COL up on PHI, 2-1 in the fourth

Kyle Baker said...

But he hung tough?

Steve Sax said...

Manny Ramirez, one pitch one out

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE? TAKE A GODDAMN PITCH YOU GUYS

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I guess the offense was confused by Kurkjian's article on pitch efficiency.

Orel said...

Scarlett looked great. Although she may have been wearing a Carrie Fisher-esque chest wrap.

LONEY HOMER!

Steve Sax said...

If Chad is Hangin' Tough, our batters at the plate are Bye Bye Bye

Steve Sax said...

LONEY!!!!!

Orel said...

Epale, Karina!

Kyle Baker said...

Road Loney, Home Loney...I can't tell the difference any more!

Steve Sax said...

By the way, it is SO refreshing to hear Vin with a home run call. Smooth, clear, clean. Like a good beer.

And not like Charley.

karina said...

King James taste of power!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Charley's more like a glass of vinegar: incredibly powerful and really tough to bear.

karina said...

Epale Orel! :)

karina said...

Aren't you glad that King James is hitting for power?. I mean, he's been getting balls out of the park way more often than his all and short MLB career.

Orel said...

Karina, you are incapable of hate. A valuable asset in today's world.

The final score of this game will not be 1-0.

Steve Sax said...

Blake DeWitt hit

clap clap, clap-clap-clap

Steve Sax said...

Vin says Carroll is batting .343 with one error in replacing Furkey on the DL. Is that true?

All I'm looking at is a .286 average and I can't recall many highlights (short of singling to reach base before Andre's walk off grand slam)

Kyle Baker said...

We'll get to this pitcher.

Of course, they're probably going to get to ours, too.

Steve Sax said...

And, Carroll flies to right.

1-0 Dodgers.

Josh S. said...

I'm going to start the Ewok defense fund.

Another Pandora's Box: I believe Phantom Menace is the best film of the prequels. (But they all suck.)

Kyle Baker said...

Yeah B-R shows .286.

Steve Sax said...

karina, you know what else is getting balls out of the park? a fourth-place position in our division.

Okay, okay, that's enough pessimism for today.

Steve Sax said...

Josh S, I hope the Ewok Defense Fund (EDF) has little furry cans for coin collection.

Steve Sax said...

Re; this FRS ad in the bottom right of my GameDay: I think I read that "Maddie Karlsson", who is admittedly both hot and ripped, is not even a real person. True?

Steve Sax said...

well, it's 1-1 now.

Kyle Baker said...

@Josh

You're just asking for it, aren't you?

"(But they all suck.)"

Hallelujah! The third prequel (last one released) sucked the least on my suckmeter.

Shows you how much I could care less about the prequel drivel that I don't even know what their names are or what order they are in. The first (real) three shaped my entire youth; the other tripe didn't even form enough of a reason for me to memorize their proper names.

Steve Sax said...

well, maybe she is indeed real

Kyle Baker said...

RT Dusty Baker @7:01 We'll get to this pitcher.

Of course, they're probably going to get to ours, too.

Kyle Baker said...

^ Dat ho is waaay to skinny.

karina said...

@Dusty Baker i was just thinking i want to be as skinny, tall and natural blond as that girl is.

karina said...

@Orel I can hate: i hate the SF Giants, for example :)

Paul said...

Chad delivery goes from wild and unfocused on one pitch to pure beauty on the next.

He is fascinating to watch.

So are the Ewoks although did only one really die?

Orel said...

Maddie Karlsson is the anti-Scarlett.

"Revenge of the Sith" was the best prequel.

Short, declarative sentences are best.

Kyle Baker said...

@karina

No you don't. Just be you. What a striking concept in today's image-conscious world.

Paul said...

Vinny said the Padres lead the Giants by half a run.

Orel said...

Karina, I think your version of hate is like mild dislike for the rest of us!

karina said...

@Steve Sax whatever Vin says it's true in my book.

I know the Dodgers are in the fourth position in a lukewarm division, but if we see the positives we can be confident that this is a phase, not the entire season

Kyle Baker said...

@Karina

Unfortunately this phase is the Terrible Twos.

Kyle Baker said...

Damn, right, ManRam! Little 2-out mini rally.

Paul said...

I thought the Phantom menace did the best at telling a story and felt the closest to the original trilogy. The bad acting in the next two made them hard to watch.

I still think they could have combined the first two and made two the fall of Anakin and then three focus on the destruction of the Jedi and the race to keep the twins safe.

It would have given us more scenes showing how Anakin/Vader was a bad ass.

Just my opinion.

Steve Sax said...

manny manny manny manny

2-1 Dodgers

Josh S. said...

What Paul said. Also, I greatly prefer sets and location shooting to green screen.

John Williams did some great work on all three, though. No surprise there.

karina said...

@Dusty Baker it's difficult to "be yourself" when you are a woman born, raised and living in Venezuela but thank you very much for the boost.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Attack of the Clones was the worst. Aimless, pointless, no substance. At least the others had a semblance of a plot. Clones was just random dribble.

Orel said...

That was kind of a bullshit play. Martin charged with an error while trying to avoid the bat thrown on the ground right in front of him.

Orel said...

Vengeance is ours! 5-3 DP!

Jason said...

Chin Mode flashing the leather!

Josh S. said...

Dayum! That was suhweet.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Chinface gets shit done.

karina said...

@Josh I'm with you, Ewoks have been unfairly treated.

@Dusty @Paul i cry a lot every time i watch Episode III. The realization of Anakin Skywalker finally turned to the Dark Side for a broken heart is too much to handle for me. A broken heart for the deaths of his mother and wife made him an iconic villain. What can be sadder?

There it goes my street cred here: i'm fond to watch the prequels over and over

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Jamey Carroll's gameday pic haunts me.

Orel said...

Bad news: Changed to wild pitch by Billingsley.

Kyle Baker said...

I see that dot, Sax. Does it represent the bat that interfered with JMart?

Steve Sax said...

what the hell does that mean, anyway?

Orel said...

Love watching Kemp go opposite field.

Orel said...

Kyle Baker said...

Steve Sax said...

bison's been a little endangered lately, so it's nice to see him single here AND take second on the throw

karina said...

Two things i worry about: Mr LASF's fists and Steve Sax's pessimism

karina said...

Manny will make Lopez pay!

Kyle Baker said...

That was a helluva it from Manny. Caught, but damn fine swing. Let's hope he's dialed in already now that he's back.

Josh S. said...

"Andre's having a snack in right field."

The dude LOVES seeds. I stood in his spot on a fireworks night and the ground was covered in seed shells. (Pumpkin, I think.)

karina said...

Night, Sax!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

So far my fists are safe.

Orel said...

It's a BABIP kinda inning: BB, single, double, line drive, line drive.

Orel said...

Hey Karen, you're right on time.

Kyle Baker said...

You're going to the dark side, Sax?

Orel said...

Josh, did you pick some shells up to sell on eBay?

karen said...

I like the way Lopez pitches

Steve Sax said...

Just posted footage of Keith Hernandez catching some Zs during a Giants-Mets game. Yawn!

Steve Sax said...

ok, NOW I'm going to the other side

Paul said...

Has it Been mentioned already that Lopez delivery and body style looks a lot like Greg maddux but a righty?

Not the same results of course.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Chad just needs to keep his pants on for three more innings.

Kyle Baker said...

Josh

I was there on a fireworks night (4th of July last season) in LF, and I noted a bunch of seeds in Manny's spot. I actually did pick up a few and keep them. I left them in my "Dodger pants" (the good luck ones I wear to every game) for a long time but I think they eventually broke apart in small pieces and got washed away in the laundry.

Orel said...

LAL 29, UT 24, end 1st

Kyle Baker said...

Shannon Brown! Wow. That needed a disclaimer for pregnant and heart condition.

Orel said...

Bills solid through five. So far, so good.

Paul said...

Man Chadley in a zone. It reminds me of the time I hit seven strikes in a row at bowling then I had a bit to many I lost my stuff and finished below average.

What was I talking about. Oh yeah Bills locked in the danger zone.

karina said...

Two Ks for Bills in t he 5th. Very nice!

Kyle Baker said...

Vin talking about Bills' psyche.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Chad's still got something left in the tank for two more innings.

Orel said...

Bynum was quick there!

Orel said...

Martin's OBP is rising. Good to see.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Okay, seriously, what the hell happened to Kemp?

Paul said...

Watching Lopez reminds me of Maddux which reminds me of Karros because he owned Maddux. That was fun to watch him tee off on the hall of famer.

Paul said...

I saw now they are auctioning certain dodgers-yanks tickets starting the price at a certain minimum amount. God I will be glad when that series is over.

Orel said...
