Hiroki Kuroda (4-1, 2.66) John Ely (1-1, 3.86) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (2-4, 4.81).
He's wondering about Ethier's year
He makes out the lineup
Pats down his thinning hair
Then asks his coaches
"Do we match up all right?"
They say, "Joe Torre, things look Wandyful tonight"
Yes, Wandy Rodriguez
His command is not all there
4.81 ERA
It was 3.02 just last year
Hiroki Kuroda And that John Ely
Has been more than all right
Like they said, things look Wandyful tonight
We feel Wandyful
Because our team's won seven in a row
And the Wandy of it all
Is that we just do realize how much we love it

I wonder if Sons of Jack Morris posts alternative Clapton lyrics on nights when Phil Coke pitches.
The song still works when you swap in John Ely.
To be fair, Kuroda was supposed to be tonight's starting pitcher up until yesterday.
The Stros better keep losing. They laid down like dogs this weekend.
Would you say the Strohs laid down like Alex, Paul?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_the_Dog
Wandy Rodriguez should exchange his spare 'a' with Jered Weaver for his spare 'e'.
For some reason I remember being very frustrated during both meetings with the astros.
Last year that is
Alex the dogs great flashback. Just like the Hamms cartoons.
Nic
I went to one of the games against Astros last year, and it was the bizarre game where the Astros pitcher got made at himself then threw the ball away accidentally as he tried to slam it into his glove. We ended up winning that one, at least.
@Nic:
UPDATE:
My personal game notes say:
"Kershaw back on track. Manny and Pierre both started in outfield. Kemp scores on Hampton's strange error (threw ball into his glove in anger but missed)."
That was on 7/18/2009. We won 5-2. We took 2 of 3 in that homestand against the Astros.
And Astros took 2 of 3 from us in April in Houston.
You have personal game notes? Where do you keep them?
@Mr. F
For the games I attend, I keep a spreadsheet containing the date, the opponents, the score/result, and major things that happen in the game.
I know, I know, it's both lame and obsessive-compulsive.
Fisher PG
Bryant SG
Artest SF
Gasol PF
Bynum C
DB, that's really cool. I keep a scorecard for every game I attend, but I only started doing that last year.
I try the scorecard thing, but it's too damn hard to work on it in your lap in the midst of a game.
I think I'll probably start to do that. If I wanted to get super nerdy, I'd scan the scorecard as well.
Yeah I know what you mean MRLASF. I don't necessarily finish it from 1st inning to the end. There's often a blank inning here and there...
@Mr F
Get super nerdy.
I wish I could do the scorecard thing, and I admire the people who do and can, but there are just too many distractions (e.g., me distracting myself when I need to go stand in a 20-minute beer or pee line and I miss almost an inning).
HOWEVER...I'll bet there are iPhone/smartphone apps out there that make scoring baseball a breeze, in which case I might reconsider. As I said, get nerdy.
The only thing about the scorecard is it takes up way too much of my attention. There are innings where I just want to enjoy the game, chat, eat, etc. Filling in the scorecard can just get tedious after awhile.
@DB 4:55p: that is so incredibly cool I can't even tell you. I'm impressed. Wow...
And I thought saving tickets stubs was a good idea! Ha!
@DB, ESPN was hawking an iPhone scoring app the other day, which I looked at for a second and passed
blogging during the game ain't always easy, either
I wish I had thought of keeping game notes. Before 2008, I only went to maybe 1 game a year, and now I have no idea what games I went to.
All I remember is that I was at the $2 Tuesday debacle and I think I have a ticket stub from April 29, 1992 (L.A. Riots).
Thx, Sax.
Oh, the other thing I do is hyperlink each date's entry to the Baseball-Reference.com box score for the game so it's easy to go back and pick up exactly what happened.
Josh, that's cool as hell that you have a stub from the riot game. Not that rioting is cool at all, but that's an interesting piece of history.
Here's the recap of the Hampton error.
Hmm...the only games I can remember have ties to violence.
Sax said:
"blogging during the game ain't always easy, either"
Neither is writing dozens of inane comments in the GT during games. Yet I soldier on, somehow!
AHhhhhhhhhh! Man, Sax, you needed to put a warning on that link. I was peacefully reading the article then the next to last paragraph snuck up and said:
"Torre announced before the game that right-hander Jason Schmidt, who hasn't pitched in the majors since July 16, 2007, will be activated from the 60-day DL on Monday night to start against Cincinnati."
This has the video highlights, including the Hampton f' up. Nice memory, Dusty!
If you can get past the smug highlight guy, you will gaze longingly at highlights of O-Dog (man, I miss him), as well as see some nifty Ks and a kick save from Kershaw.
We should have a Skype "meet-up" one of these games. I want to know what a game thread would sound like. The Sons would be welcome to use voice changers.
sorry Josh S, no video highlights from 1992
Skype...funny Josh.
I still like the idea of getting together to watch a game in a bar, but with laptops and WiFi so we can still post in the GTs even though we'd be standing a few feet away from one another.
I love Tweets like this from Old Hoss Radbourn:
"An Irish Catholic once pointed skyward after hitting a home run off me. You can bet I later hit that Papist. With a shovel. #MartinLuther"
On our way, and some water is falling from the sky-hopefully it lets up.
Betsy-
Keep an eye out for how many ushers you see, and keep us updated!
Tell me if you see this usher.
"sorry Josh S, no video highlights from 1992"
Thank GOD.
Just found out the bro-in-law is ballin' in the baseline box club by the Astros dugout tonight. Lucky bastitch.
Slow start for Lakers, though Odom looks great.
Odom tweeted that you're looking pretty good yourself, Mr LA SF
@Dusty Baker I'm deeply impressed you take notes of the games you attend. I tried to do the scoreboard thing once and i got a nosy umpire telling me i should drop that and keep the eye on the ball.
I do keep every ticket stub on my planner (because i'm old fashioned and i like to draw things around things to do, tickets stubs and lame bills)
I told him that camera was for private use, dammit.
By the way, if you ever do a massive SoSG, you'll have to allow me to watch you over Skype at least five minutes.
Or you can wait for me a year, if everything goes as I planned.
Steve Lyons thinks John Ely looks like Steve Lyons. Patrick O'Neal was appropriately WTF.
@ Sax,thats 1 Usher i wouldnt mind seeing!
So far attendance is really low, but the Deli is open. Ely is warming up, looks more like big bird than matthew. The one day i dont bring a ball to sign JMart decides to give autographs. Bad reception keeps me from participating in the thread.
FAIL SASHA!!!
There goes the no-hitter.
There gies the shutout.
Ugh. Here we go.
Double play redeems.
Minimal damage, though I really hope the offense is more competent than yesterday.
I call Russell homer here.
Come on Ely!
Beard is BACK!
Whoa, that inning got out of control quick.
This is shaping up well so far.
Kemp disregards the stop sign, but gets lucky
3-1 Dodgers!
@Karina
Keeping old stubs in a planner is a fine project, too. It lends itself to writing more narrative about the game. I should start doing that more in my spreadsheet.
To be fair to Kemp, Bowa was waving waving waving then all of the sudden put the stop sign on; there's no way Kemp could have stopped where he was on the basepaths without blowing out both knees and both hammies.
Carroll with a remarkable, hard-earned groundout.
Martin BB
WOW what a no look bounced pass by gasol!!
Ouch, CS
Been caught stealing, once, 55!
Well got dayung. I was waaaaaaay off in my estimate of when the Lakers game started. I just flipped over think I had missed probably the first period. Alas, almost the third is almost over. How could I be that off? Other than the obvious "idiot" answer.
stupid 6pm start time.
ELY! Love it. Came back from 3-1 count for the K.
lakers getting sloppy.
Ely strikes out the side. Dang, he's racking up K's quickly
Ely strikes out the side, and the Lakers are rolling.
6PM??? WTF. We even get an ECMB when two western conf teams play each other. Fuck the Least Coast.*
*Sorry to my good SoSG friends on the East Coast, but I needed to get that off my chest.
lakers bench just needs to hold off the suns bench for half a period or so and we should be good.
kobe stays in to start the 4q going for the kill.
haha, dragic just facepalmed Lamar.
If that long Kobe 3 wasn't a dagger, it's at least a pocketknife in the gut.
Ely's getting through the innings with quite a lot of pitch efficiency. Exactly what we need out of our starters.
Nothing will stop Lakers/Celtics rematch talk now.
damn that would have been the dunk of the year if shannon finished it.
i would think a pocketknife to the gut would hurt more, haha.
DeTriple!
@Nic
Yeah, but the pocketknife probably wouldn't kill ya, where the dagger would. Pick your poison.
Well, poison would kill ya, too.
Liking the situational hitting. Joyce aimed right where the RF wasn't and Carroll did exactly what he was supposed to do to bring Joyce home.
Carroll's no Rafael Furcal, but he's been getting his job done quite well offensively.
lakers steamrolling suns.
Suck it Hollinger!!
Did Hollinger predict a Suns win?
Phucking phormer Phillies.
Pedro Feliz has retained his Dodger killing powers that he had as a Phillie.
suns in 6
he always picks against the lakers or the lakers in 7 if he absolutely has too.
but he is a hawks fan so what does he know.
I would like to apologize to Nick Reed, I mean Reed Johnson you were our rally starter tonight.
I would also like to apologize to Dewitt, you have inspired me with the bat and the glove tonight.
I would apologize to Ely for downgrading is worth in the JP trade but my I checked and my in deptch analysis was "What happened" but I did refer to it as a nightmare so Ely you are the man.
Didn't Hollinger's numbers give the Hawks an edge over the Lakers in championship odds at one point?
I typed that too fast, lots of typos I need to focus on the fundamentals and stop dating pop stars.
@mlasf, yup.
When was the last time anyone went to a game because a specific Dodger starting pitcher was going to be on the mound.
It has been a looong time for me.
Ely might break that streak.
Bowa not lookin' so hot tonight.
Is it possible for base coaches to get rusty?
haha, doug collins keeps saying that he thinks the suns are going to play a lot more zone next game. Wasnt the triangle developed to counter the zone defense?
now if the lakers would only run the triangle for a whole game.
Dammit, that base running decision sucked.
I'm calmed by Vinny's great story of the night re first time an all-Asian pitching staff got a W for the same team.
Mrs Dusty and Mrs Dusty in Law are raising the roof.
Phew, the no-walk streak is still alive.
two cools things:
Ely's walkless streak
and Vinny said the Dodgers have the best home record since 2006?!
Lakers run the triangle? I can barely recognize it most times.
Gnats and Pods tied at 1 in the fifth.
SD just went up 2-1.
KKKKKKKK for Old rELYable.
The windmill at work...
Aren't the Suns the team that usually puts up 120 points while the opponent still has 100?
@DB, occasionally you'll see it. I think there are too many guys on the team who either dont understand it or dont want to run it.
Blogger died again.
Ha ha she can't hold key
@Paul the Astros catcher tonight used to play with my team in winter baseball. He was traded for a young prospect who had taken 3 or 4 at bats in Venezuela.
Prospect got hurt in the first at-bat he took in the Minor Leagues. Everyone complained, we were outraged in a J.D Drew and Andruw Jones kind of way.
Prospect was healed by the start of winter baseball and he turned out to be last season's Rookie of the year and MVP.
We all had to swallow words but we're glad to do so.
GBA singer looks like she has been partying with Bowa.
How we doin'?
anyone hear about Clipper Darrell's bring lebron to the clippers parade?
GBA has an intro?
Damn. I was hoping Ely would go at least one more, but at least the walkless streak will live on.
I think the Sons forgot to pay the rent again.
That was another great game for Ely.
Martin's hitting streak likely on the line here...
Martin's hit streak extends to 12!
Anyone there?
@Nic
Yeah, it doesn't lend itself to today's, er, more self-indulged players.
Damn, Mr. C. Now I need to cancel that missing Customer report I just filled out.
Betsy, now that I'm watching on tv, I'm realizing it looks cold and awful Wandy out there.
Yeah! The streak is alive!
What was that pre-GBA shite? Did she make up two new stanzas?
She should have sung the Eric Clapton lyrics from tonight's GT.
Nice catch by Berkman, I must say
--Ed Grimsley
@Karina
When it comes to Dodger success stories I love being wrong.
Man, we had better start paying our blogger bills...
Come on, Blogger, work with us!
Amazing Kemp snag! Even Colletti is cheering somewhere.
Humberto Quintero is robbed by Kemp in center
suck it, kemp haters!
Odelay, all.
Things seem to be looking good for Mr. Ely tonight, yes?
Oh no, it's curious George to pitch
Weaver was laughing with Torre when Torre took him out.
Damn I love DreamWeaver.
Blogger, WTF
Ubragg, can't you flip a switch and fix this blogger issue?
Sons: Did you bounce the Blogger check again?
Or is this a North Korean intelligence hit on the SoSG infrastructure?
Breezy comes in to the same game that saw Wandy blow on out.
I'm holding my breath.
HIDEY HO
Oh no. It's Sherrill time.
Weaver out, Sherrill in. Cue Mrs. S.
7.90 ERA vs .194 avg
Clash of the titans.
I have no confidence in Sherrill
Titan Breezy wins it.
The Strohs are a good team to build confidence in a pitcher.
karina with the pessimism.
Wow, I stand corrected. Nice K Sherrill!
Strikeout?
Strikeout!!!
Welcome back, Flat Brim Reaper.
Flat Breezy really rounding into form!
See? he shut my mouth.
This is weird...Blogger just manufactured a pessimistic statement meant to look like it came from Karina. It read:
"I have no confidence in Sherrill"
It's gotta be the North Koreans!
Clear DSB being played, coming out of the commercial break
However, it'd be nice some insurance.
im surprised bowa didnt have manny take three there.
so much for that two-day slump that Manny was in during SD
Manny swung and missed at 22 pitches all last year, according to Vin; in the last two games he had swung and missed 11 times.
Well, he's making contact again.
Karina's pessimism clearly yields the opposite effect!
kemp grimaces with discontent
and i'm not talking about big purple furry grimaces
like this grimace
Bad AB, Matty. Ramirez can't move from second; one out.
IBB to FJL
W-E-A-K
Troncoso warming in the 'pen.
make them pay casey!!
Gameday had Manny's double wayyy out there in right-center. Looks like someone's seeing the ball well.
Man, Delino has some...interesting posts.
IBB's on Gameday are fun to watch.
light beard at bat.
@DB, thats one way to describe them.
@RB
GameDay was accurate on that Manny hit.
C'mon Blake, make them pay.
35282 paid attendence.
And does Manny smile anymore?
@db
I've been here and there all night. Had to run to the print shop to get last minute corrections done, unfortunately.
not what i meant when i said make them pay casey.
fiddlesticks.
two on, two out--Blake Ks, and it's up to DeWitt
One Blake down, on to the next one.
DeTriple X2!
nice hit DeWitt
LONEY AND RAMIREZ SCORE!
"And maybe tomorrow night, they'll put the right fielder in right field!"--Vin
Pence wasn't even close to that catch.
yay for errors!!
"Maybe tomorrow night they'll put the right fielder in right field!" -Vinny re H Pence vs DeWitt
DePull hitter!
Carroll is pissed at getting thrown out at first!
Carly Fiorina has a really bad haircut.
Mr. Triple.
6-2 going to the ninth sounds a lot better than 4-2
@Mr LASF I could play the pessimistic part if it guarantees Dodgers wins.
Double triple?
Freaking Gameday skipped right over the triple.
Wifey finally went out for a walk; TV is on the game. Nice.
Fiorina has one of the worst haircuts of all times.
And platforms.
getting close to that 200
200?
Per Eric Stephen:
"Blake DeWitt's 2-triple night is the 19th such game in LA Dodger history, and the 28th for Dodgers since 1952"
Damn it!
Manny is ALL business.
GIDP is hereby requested by the floor.
FJL matches Berkman's over-the-rail catch with one of his own
One more out and We make Party!!
