Post-Game 47 Thread: How To Waste an Ely

CUBS 1, DODGERS nil

John Ely notched seven scoreless innings, but the Dodgers strung him along until the eighth inning before Xavier Paul (0-for-4 from the plate) finally told Ely that we weren't going to give him any runs this game. What's more, Paul added, I will fumble around like a blind man in right field to allow two triples in the eighth (one time of which saddled Paul with an error), so the Cubs will get the one measly run it will take to win. Then Paul added a Nelson Muntz "Ha, ha!" and gave Ely a wedgie.

Somehow, Ely did not lose composure when confronted with this news, but anyone could connect the dots between Blake DeWitt's 0-for-3-with-3Ks performance, James Loney's 0-for-4 outing, and Joe Torre's fruitless use of three pinch hitters in the ninth, all of whom generated outs (thanks Rafael Furcal, Manny Ramirez, and Garret "GAARP" Anderson). Cubs take two of three in the series, and the Dodgers slip to 2.5 GB pending the Cardinals @ Padres game (first pitch, 3.30p).

UPDATE: The Padres actually lost a game to the Cards, so we remain two games back. The Rox, winners of five in a row, are lurking in third place now...

That was frustrating.

1. I'm glad E is nearing his return

2. I'm glad our offense doesn't usually crap the bed like that.

Neeebs said...

I blame DeWitt! Let's kill him.

Actually, with a lefty on the mound, I would have started Belly today.

Mr. Customer said...

I blame Neeebs

Neeebs said...

@MC:

That seems to be everyone's mantra today. The weekend can't come soon enough.

Dusty Baker said...

Now I'm pissed off all over again.

#BlameNeeebs

I found E hiding in Neeebs' name. Free E and get him back in the lineup, stat!

Mr. Customer said...

@Neeebs

T-2 hours and counting.

Steve Sax said...

Seriously, let's just start Game 5 please

Dusty Baker said...

Now the Gnats are beating the Nats.

Mr. Customer said...

I've got the touch of death today. If I tune in to a game, the good guys seem to start losing.

I'll have to stay the hell away from the Lakers tonight.

The curse of Eric Collins claims yet another game.

Can't wait to get back to the comfort of the NL West.

Steve Sax said...

Does Cursed Collins continue to Colorado, or does Vin pull off the next series in Denver?

Josh S. said...

Vin does Rockies games, Thank Vin.

Josh S. said...

"The curse of Eric Collins claims yet another game."

Actually, they've yet to win a SERIES called by Collins this year.

In fact, they only won yesterday because the universe said, "The hell with this shit!" and tried to knock him off the air.

Josh S. said...

Next Eric Collins game is June 15 in Cincy. That road trip also includes the Red Sox series. Thankfully, he can't totally botch that, since he's only calling 1 of the 3 games. (FOX and ESPN have the other two.)

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

DAMN YOU, ERIC COLLINS

Josh S. said...

I started a spreadsheet to track the curse. Thankfully, Eric can't ruin any other month as badly as he ruined April (He called FIFTEEN games that month!). August comes close. He'll be calling ten.

His current season record is 5-13, all series losses.

NicJ said...

@Josh, NICE!

who says we never get anything done in these threads?

rbnlaw TIME! said...

Here's to a daydream of Bin walking into the booth at Coors Field and bitch slapping Collins out of his seat.

"Looks like (slap, slap) this one is (slap, slap) GONE!"

Steve Sax said...

@Josh S, I'd love to see your spreadsheet work (I'm a nerd)--can we post your findings (or at least submit your paper for a grant!)?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Is this the default Lakers thread?

NicJ said...

At least if the lakers lose it wont be the saddest thing that went on at Staples Center today. (Clippers Parade)

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

i saw a video on youtube, it was maybe 50-60 people.
However thats like a tenth of the amount of people that go to the games.

NicJ said...

Marv albert already talking about the stupid zone D.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Cleveland makes a rift on "We Are the World." Miami and New York start campaign websites. The Clippers...

they get five dozen people to walk around Staples a few hours before a Laker playoff game begins. Hmmm, I wonder which campaign will be the least effective.

NicJ said...

figures, first loose ball foul on us.

NicJ said...

guess the refs wont be helping us tonight.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Amare's not accustomed to having fouls called on him.

NicJ said...

damn, refs really not helping us. Kobe in foul trouble.

NicJ said...

WTF!? they are just letting the suns hack away.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

This is not a very good start.

NicJ said...

NicJ said...

Vujacic, pesky defender.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Sasha just can't make them like he used to. But his defense is really helping things out. Who knew?

NicJ said...

must get kobe ball, NBA JAM status.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

This I like!

NicJ said...

how was that a blocking foul on fish?

Josh S. said...

@Sax 5:19

It's just a table in Word at the moment. I'll send you what I have, but I'm going to flesh it out more this weekend.

Josh S. said...

Crap! I didn't send it to myself. It's on my work computer and I'm not back there until Tuesday.

MR. F said...

If it's a google Doc, you can share it with all of SoSG! (everybody that has gmail anyway)

NicJ said...

i cant believe we are even in a position to lose right now.

MR. F said...

Same.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Just give the ball to Kobe or Fish. They're the only ones who can hit a shot.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

What the hell, Ron? You're supposed to run the fucking clock out!

NicJ said...

looks like a kobe game winner might be in order today.

NicJ said...

NicJ said...

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

NicJ said...

seriously we havent gotten ONE FUCKING CALL in this period.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Kobe or Fish? Or does Ron work his way into this play?

NicJ said...

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

My head is about to explode after today's day in LA sports.

NicJ said...

nash looks different on the podium tonight, annoyed.

Paul said...

man I feel like I went 15 rounds with Apollo Creed. Taking tomorrow off might have been the best idea I had since purchasing a sixer of Anchor porter an hour ago.

Ely is really good. Not even Neeebs could stop him.

Dusty Baker said...

I just watched today's game. What the living FUCK was XPaul thinking on both those plays where he misjudged where the wall was by about 12 feet? Was he hammered? One of stranger things I've seen in baseball in awhile.

NicJ said...

from what i have seen in limited time X Paul hasnt really looked great when it came to tracking down balls.

Paul said...

yeah when I saw him a the game last week he was really off line one ball hit to him. He was right field today? He seems more comfortable in left but still needs to work his routes to the ball.
