Harwell's Passing Brings Out The Worst In Buffalo News Reporter

Ernie Harwell passed earlier this month, which was of course a sad moment to lose a legendary baseball radio broadcaster. But it's pretty morbid of the Buffalo News' Greg Connors to turn the lead of his Harwell homage into a pending expiration notice for our beloved Vin Scully:

The death of Detroit Tigers announcing legend Ernie Harwell this week was a reminder that a golden era of baseball broadcasting is almost gone. Now, Vin Scully is on the clock.

Scully has said this will be his last season behind the Los Angeles' Dodgers microphones. Harwell, who died Tuesday at age 92, retired from doing Tigers games in 2002. Scully and Harwell, along with Mel Allen, Red Barber, Jack Buck and Harry Caray, among others, came to prominence when baseball was truly the national pastime.

Sure, Scully is on the clock. But, to paraphrase Keith Olbermann, we're all on the clock. Shouldn't you be speaking of living legends with more deferential terms than a deathwatch tracker?

Interesting, I hear sports columnists for print media are also on the clock.

I hear Buffalo is on the clock too

Vin NEVER said this was his last year broadcasting, anyway.

HAH-hah! Your medium is dying, Greg Connors!

Yeah, Vin has only said he's year to year with the broadcasting duties; never definitively said this was his last. Crack reporting there, Connors.

Disrespectful to Vin, and disrespectful to Harwell to talk about others' pending death in a requiem for the recently passed.

My Homeboy is not on the clock!

Yes, you guys are correct. Scully never said this was his last season. Got to do some Voodoo stuff for Connors. Where's Jobu?

OT: I really hope the Dodgers win tonight. I know what they are up against but man clinching our first road series win with Ely on the mound would be a nice feeling.

On this topic:

I get what the guy was trying to say and I think he was trying to compliment Vinny, but it was tactless and factually inaccurate.

That guy is going to be a supervisor someday.

i love when print journalists talk poorly of blogs and bloggers for their lack of fact checking and integrity, but yet we have this bozo spewing made up facts.

Exactly, Koufax.

koufax! I went to New Shea for the Sunday Giants game and it was nearly as windy and cold as the Dodger games. Plus the Giants won. That makes me 0-4 with mild frostbite at Citi Field this season.

FB - i saw that game on TV, looked miserable, I am not going back to New Shea until july hits, maybe then it will be guarunteed to be warm.

It's completely classless of Greg Connors to reference a living legend such as Vin Scully in that matter. Then again, Connors DOES live in Buffalo, so is it reasonable to expect much more from him?

I'm now glad my wife threw up in Buffalo's famed Anchor Bar (even if it was from the previous night's food poisoning)

@FB 5/11 12.12p: With the ninth overall pick, the Buffalo Bills select CJ Spiller.

It doesn't get much better in Sports Illustrated... In this week's issue, they have a story on Harwell and it's second paragraph reads:

"Detroit grieved for Ernie Harwell...as deeply as St. Louis grieved in 2002 for Jack Buck and Los Angeles someday will grieve for Vin Scully..."
