Game 26 Thread: May 4 vs. Brewers, 7p

Clayton Kershaw (1-1, 3.07) vs. Chris Narveson (1-0, 6.60).

COMMENTS: Nothing like a little home cooking to get us back in order. Following our fifth straight road series loss, the Dodgers came back and beat the vaunted Pittsburgh Pirates, 1979 World Series champions, three games to one--marking our third home series victory in three series. But before we get all warm and toasty in our belly, having beaten a team that hasn't had a winning record since the three-division realignment, let's focus on the dish that's been served to us today: a three-game series with Milwaukee.

We're going to need Xavier Paul, 3-for-9 with four runs scored in his two games batting leadoff, to keep setting the table for us. We'll need Kershaw to make sure his fastballs are poppin' fresh. And we'll need to make sure Larry Bowa doesn't get too salty watching the umps' calls this evening (okay, that was a stretch). Otherwise, Dodger fans will be clamoring for Ned to get back to the hot stove (which was not all that hot this winter).

But I'm hopeful. After all, isn't this piping-hot home cooking exactly what we'd want, to complement an ice-cold (10-15 record / fourth place in the NL Central) Brew? (Or you could make it a picnic, and eat dinner while sitting on your This Is My Town Fleece Blanket, given away tonight to the first 50K fans.)

(This thread also serves as the GameThread for Lakers vs. Utah Game 2 (7.30p tip), which according to StubHub may be a necessary game for the series tonight. Apparently, the Lakers weren't able to win the four-game series in one game. So, go Lakers!)

"If necessary" is definitely a mistake, but I think it's on there because Game 2 would not be scheduled for today if Round 1 had gone 7 games.

Now, where's Dusty "Baker" to "serve" us the lineup?

I'm not sure I want Chili Davis and Stew Cliburn warming me.

Josh S. said...

(Damn. Should have saved that for a puzzle.)

Jason said...

Sorry, Dusty, your lineup may not be required, but your presence shall certainly be requited with a victory.

I'm going to miss the game thread during actual game time as I'll be occupying the company seats at Safeco Field tonight.

Jason said...

Thanks Roberto, nice shout out from Dylan. And Dylan's playoff beard is coming nicely.

Kyle Baker said...

Why oh why must magazines put an exclamation mark after every headline, as if "90 Tasty Recipes Inside!" is so much more appealing to the prospective reader than just the droll "90 Tasty Recipes Inside".

[And yes I know the period goes inside the quotation marks but threatens to confuse the point I'm making.]

Kyle Baker said...

What did Dylan say?

MR.F said...

It can stay outside if you want to be British.

Nostradamus said...

@MR.F

Dusty's as close to British as we get here.

Kyle Baker said...

@ Mr. F-

Exactly. And I am of English descent, and quite the Anglophile, so it's fine with me to keep it on the outside.

Steve Sax said...

Dusty Baker, +30 years from now:

"You kids get off my lawn! And keep your goddamn periods outside of your end quotes!"

Kyle Baker said...

Dusty Baker, +30 minutes from now:

"You kids get off my lawn! And keep your goddamn periods outside of your end quotes!"

MR.F said...

Shouldn't it be:

"You kids get off my lawn! And keep your goddamn periods outside of your end quotes"!

MR.F said...

Damn you people who leave work at 5!!!!

Kyle Baker said...

Damn you people who leave work before 6:30!

MR.F said...

Yes Dusty. Damn them!

Heard the E Harwell news on MLB Network Radio. Sad day for Tigers, baseball, and the dwindling art of calling a game.

Orel said...

SF 6, FLA 6, bot 9, 2 out

Kyle Baker said...

Timmeh misses out on the W then I suppose.

Orel said...

Brian Wilson vs. Ronnie Paulino

Orel said...

Paulino sharp one-hopper to first. Extras in FLA.

Kyle Baker said...

Guess where I am, Vinny. Yeah, that's right...on the sofa.

Kyle Baker said...

In the meantime, Go Nats!

Kyle Baker said...

Whoa - Did you guys hear that the Dodgers are playing the Yankees in June?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This isn't a good start.

Kyle Baker said...

If that last pitch was low then where was the pitch that Loney got thrown out on?

Kyle Baker said...

Alright, Kershaw...you got 'em just where you want 'em. Sets up the triple play.

Orel said...

Where's that home-field advantage? Two up, two on for the Brewers.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This reminds me of Clayton's start against the Brewers from last season, which I saw in person.

Orel said...

Whiff!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Now it's Prince "Lemmeathim" Fielder.

Kyle Baker said...

Most players grow a beard and you say, wow, good new look. Then there's Prince Fielder.

Kyle Baker said...

^Princess

Orel said...

Whiff!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

KKershaw

Kyle Baker said...

Now that Kershaw is pissed off at himself, he's dealing.

Orel said...

Way to settle down, Clayton.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

It still took 22 pitches for Clayton to escape that jam.

Steve Sax said...

Hellllllllllo!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Heellllooo, baby!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

It's so good to hear Vin call that flyout. If it were Collins, he'd be screaming until our ears would bleed.

Steve Sax said...

One inning done, 0-0

Nostradamus said...

How about a 123 inning to keep the pitch count down, kid K?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hear we go again.

karen said...

Corey Hart has the Abe Lincoln look workin'

Steve Sax said...

All you fantasy baseball players: any of you owners of a Corey Hart?

Yes?

Nostradamus said...

Or not.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That was disconcerting.

Nostradamus said...

Effing walks!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I don't think Kershaw has it tonight.

Kyle Baker said...

Kyle Baker said...

^I was just wishing I could flash forward. This game will kill me.

Steve Sax said...

1-0 Brews

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Just one more foul bunt...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'm seeing 5 innings for Kershaw.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Make that 3.

Kyle Baker said...

-(Rancho Ardiendo)

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Yikes.

Nostradamus said...

Son of a hur.

karina said...

Epale everyone!

The upside of Rancho Ardiendo is we can have outs in every base.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Braun's going to crush one, I know it.

karen said...

Kid K looking a touch wild tonite

Kyle Baker said...

Frisco just went up, too. in the 12th.

Kyle Baker said...

Booooos for Kid K...wow.

Kyle Baker said...

Ramon Ortiz warming up. Wouldn't it be better just to leave K in?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

We're toast.

What's this? A Laker game? How fortunate!

Kyle Baker said...

Come on, Kershaw. Let's get this hirsute fatass out.

Kyle Baker said...

Right-o, MLASF. Lakers are deserving of attention now.

Nostradamus said...

Epale karina

karina said...

It's not classy booing Kershaw

Orel said...

I am transcribing Vin's Ernie Harwell story. It's more enjoyable than watching Kershaw get crushed. 7-0 Brewers.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

You were saying, Dusty, re Sun God Ortiz?

Kyle Baker said...

You have got to be kidding me.

PGT up yet? Fuck this game. Kid K has clearly taken a step back in his development.

Jiminez and and Lincecum going one way, Kershaw and Bills another.

Orel said...

Is Kershaw getting lots of boos? That's wrong.

Nostradamus said...

Can't watch this.

*switches to Lakers, along with everyone else in this city*

Kyle Baker said...

What's the opposite of "epale," Karina?

Orel said...

UT 8, LAL 4

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

2 whole friggin runs in a four game series against the Fathers. 7 runs in less than two against Kershaw.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Kershaw's ERA is now just a tick below 5.

karina said...

@Dusty Baker chao, adiĂłs, hasta luego, nos vemos, que pases buenas noches, que descanses...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Even Vin is exasperated with the incompetence.

karina said...

Are we keeping Ramon Ortiz for real?

karina said...

@Mr LASF would you make me a favor?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Bronx cheers around.

Kyle Baker said...

Thanks, Karina. I just didn't know if it had a logical opposite (e.g., left and right).

karina said...

#100!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Yes. Yes I can.

karina said...

Would you keep your fists as away you can from your walls?please

Orel said...

There is an MVR behind Phil Jackson tonight.

Kyle Baker said...

@Orel

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I can guarantee nothing.

Josh S. said...

Hey guys, what's new?

Nostradamus said...

@MLASF

She only specified fists. Feel free to unload a Glasgow kiss on it, if you must.

Kyle Baker said...

Game hasn't started yet, Josh. You're jsut in time. There was some stuff earlier, but I just hit reset and started the game over.

Steve Sax said...

This must be "THIS IS MY TOWN: MILWAUKEE" night.

Kyle Baker said...

Speaking of Glasgow, Celtic 2-1 Rangers, dammit.

karina said...

@Mr Customer Glasgow kiss?

@MrLASF your hands shouldn't be hurt with this excuse for a ballgame

Steve Sax said...

If that Verizon 3G network were so damn fast, why wouldn't she just keep the cowboy entertainer, and call around to get cowboy-themed napkins, baloons, and paper plates delivered?

Orel said...

Awesome video, thanks Dusty.

Kyle Baker said...

"THIS IS MY BITCH: KERSHAW"

Steve Sax said...

hey, they're actually trying to shill this Dodgers coaching staff poster.

Just wait until they see the 1970's usher poster. The fans are going to go nuts!

Orel said...

LAL 27, UT 23, end 1st

Nostradamus said...

@karina

Glasgow kiss = headbutt, but way more fun to say.

Steve Sax said...

The Scully Harwell tribute gave way to Harwell calling Kirk Gibson's HR in Game 5 of the 1984 WS (it automatically queued and played).

It's pretty remarkable how demonstrative Gibson was on that home run trot and celebration at home plate. If that wasn't cause for a beaning, I don't know what was.

Now, let's get back to this one.

Nick Green sucks.

Steve Sax said...

why is Xavier Paul not playing???

And leading off???

Reed Johnson sucks.

rbnlaw said...

OK, got here late. As anybody called it with a "Fuck me in the armpit" yet?
If not, it might not be over. . .yet.

Kyle Baker said...

I'll let you have the armpit honours tonight, RB.

Good to see you, BTW.

Steve Sax said...

geez, that was a TWO-BOUNCE relay from second base to third base, which didn't even come close to getting Braun on that triple.

What's next, us rolling the ball to first on infield singles?

Kyle Baker said...

And ZERO hustle to even make the throw in the first place. It was an afterthought to track the ball down and throw toward third.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Well, Jason's got a record in the lineup contest.

Steve Sax said...

can we try to hold the Brewers to fewer points than the Jazz? Please?

Steve Sax said...

10-0 MIL

Nostradamus said...

@dusty

Re Celtic/Rangers

Aw, that just ain't right...

Steve Sax said...

i can't take this

i feel bad for vin at this stage.

Steve Sax said...

if I had a taser I'd go after nick green and reed johnson

Kyle Baker said...

If I were at the game, I'd run onto the field so I'd get tased and therefore led away from this tub of shit game.

Steve Sax said...

this is painfulllllll

karina said...

I have two paths: 1)going to bed because i'm sleepy 2)stick to the Dodgers game.

However, i'm afraid to miss a great comeback.

Josh S. said...

So, we haven't scored a run yet?

It was 2-0 when I left my in-laws, somehow 7-0 just after I got it tuned to KABC, and I saw Ortiz give up a homer to some old biker-looking dude when I got the TV on.

Now, it's off. If they come back and win, then, well, good for them.

Steve Sax said...

i'm so disconsolate, i think I need to visit cougarlife.com

karina said...

Teach him, King James

Steve Sax said...

josh, you lost your cute avatar too

karina said...

@Steve Sax i actually saw that website and lost a little bit of my innocence. It's obviously your fault.

karina said...

Gregg Zaun, you owe Aguilas del Zulia one championship. Mr Haeger, can you HBP him? for luck?

Paul said...

Hey Guys!

What have I missed.....well it will be to nice FB back in the game thread.

karina said...

in play, no outs

*deep sigh*

Nostradamus said...

Karina's so nice, she only calls for the softest throwing pitcher we've got to headhunt.

karina said...

@Mr Customer you have me blushing.

Thanks for the clarification on the "Glasgow Kiss". British slang rocks.

Paul said...

Remeber the good ol days when we use to talk about scooby doo and we were riding the high of a very very very modest winning streak.

Life was so innocent back then.

karina said...

Casey Blake lead off mode!

karina said...

@Paul it ain't over 'till it's over and they are playing in LA. Have faith, sith knight

Kyle Baker said...

@Karina

You actually went to CougarLife.com? Nice! Can't believe you didn't report back from the female perspective.

Sorry for the lost innocence, but you still have a lot left.

Paul said...

Remember the days when we had fun with meat puns (title of my next life coach book)?

Life was so care free.

Kyle Baker said...

Looks like we have another mystery on our hands: WTF is wrong with Kid K?

*enter Harlem Globetrotters managed by that old grandmother*

Delino DeShields, Sr said...

I switched from the game to Eight Men Out. That made me feel a little better about the Dodgers.

Kyle Baker said...

Speaking of meat puns, remember that ad campaign whose tagline was "Welcome to Johnsonville"?

Josh S. said...

Scratch that, two runs!

Kyle Baker said...

@A Delino

I don't think we've even gotten eight men out in this game yet.

Nostradamus said...

Mychal Thompson with the brilliant analysis

"As long as they can outscore then 2 to 1, they'll be fine"

Paul said...

@Karina

It is easy to give up all hope when you are sith.

However We do make killer persimmon cheesecakes thanks to a darth maul recipe.

Josh S. said...

I thought Darth Maul only knew how to make a half-rack of ribs.

Steve Sax said...

Hey, we scored two!
Comeback trail!

Nostradamus said...

@dusty

Hopefully it's just a glitch for Clayton. He'd been going along better before tonight.

Josh S. said...

Clay just didn't have it tonight. I do think he has it in general.

Paul said...

3 runs in the 6th 2 runs in the 7th. 2 in the 8th. Then we will go from there.

Kyle Baker said...

Crowd doing its best Charley Steiner imitation on that Ethier routine fly ball.

Paul said...

The chronicles of Narverson may have a plot twist.

karina said...

My son took the walk, but why didn't he score on the Bison double? was a short double or what?

karina said...

@Dusty Baker can't say i have an opinion i only saw girls so i closed the tab.

@Paul i don't like where there is not hope, even if you do bake exotic cheesecakes with recipes of a sith with deep anger management issues.

karina said...

My son scored on a King James grounder. Go Dodgers! si se puede!

Josh S. said...

This would go a lot better if they didn't give up an out for every run scored.

Paul said...

Okay okay change of plans. 4 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th and then we will go from there.

karina said...

@Josh S as long as they score some runs, i'll take it

karina said...

Now my countryman Escobar will GIDP.

Kyle Baker said...

Josh-

Meant to send mad props on your comment in another thread today where @Jason was rewarded with a guest post as a result of his winning the March Madness contest, and you replied that you were surprised he hadn't already posted it. That made me chuckle all day.

Then I started watching this game, and I'm no longer chuckling.

Steve Sax said...

Stanford shout out!

Steve Sax said...

@karina 9.09p: Fan interference made it a ground-rule double, so the runner could only advance to third.

ugh, GBA

karina said...

Sax's favorite Jody Gerut (aka guy who hates me) struck out.

Steve Sax said...

actually that was a pretty solid GBA. Nice job, dude. Kept it sweet and simple with a deep baritone.

karina said...

@Sax thank you very much.

Dear Dodgers: score more runs since i can't go to bed now you're scoring runs. Not that i'm superstitious, but tomorrow i really have to rise and shine very early.

Kyle Baker said...

Mrs Dusty in Law:

"Kershaw should have stayed at the bowling alley."

The Mrs in Law is upset.

Steve Sax said...

Lakers with a nine-point lead in the third.

Carroll watching strike three with little effort expended

Kyle Baker said...

Just unfollowed Beto Duran. If there is a more useless local sports twitterer, I don't know who it is. Lakers games just yield Tweets from him about who is sitting next to whom and that kind of shit.

Steve Sax said...

@karina 9.22p: Why would Jody dislike someone as nice as you? I hear he's a Gerut guy.

Kyle Baker said...

Does Carroll have one eye on the basketball game?

Steve Sax said...

You gave Beto the Veto? (I know that doesn't rhyme, but it looks good on paper)

Kyle Baker said...

I did, Sax. My blood pressure will drop significantly now.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Wait, there's still a baseball game going? I thought everyone would just pack it up.

Steve Sax said...

High blood pressure? Are you getting enough Beto-carotene?

Kyle Baker said...

Kershaw didn't get his potassium tonight.

karina said...

@Steve Sax when he played winter baseball, he ruined my birthday weekend, he had the nerve to drive 7 runs in just before my birthday party. I think he had like 12 RBIs in 4 games that weekend.

I was very sad and angry when i left the stadium to meet my friends for my birthday party.

Steve Sax said...

3-0 count, Prince, and you strike out?

HA HA

karina said...

@Mr LASF it ain't over 'till it's over

Steve Sax said...

@DB: nice use of the periodic table. I'm feeling you.

karina said...

@Steve Sax 9:34 pm a pun on a game thread? that brings a lot of joy to my heart!

Steve Sax said...

Vin is resorting to making up dialogue between the home plate umpire and prince fielder, just to say awake

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Except in this case, it's over.

Steve Sax said...

karina, we're getting to 200 on this GT, dammit

Steve Sax said...

why is braun sliding into home? you're up 11-3 for pete's sake.

karina said...

There was a guy who posted interesting pics of the Gnats on his Twitter. Those pics scream "caption contest"

Kyle Baker said...

Thx, Sax.

Kyle Baker said...

I called 200 a couple hours ago.

Nostradamus said...

@dusty

Ershaw?

Or is it Ersha? He clearly has a Tungsten deficiency.

karina said...

I wanted to claim #200

karina said...

Bravo, Mr. Customer

karina said...

@Mr LASF in the Dodgers i trust.

Steve Sax said...

this faux dialogue in the McDonald's frappe commercials is really dull

Steve Sax said...
