Go 'Bama!

I didn't have a horse in this year's BCS title game until I read "Alabama quarterback touching all the bases" by Chris Dufresne at the LA Times:

[Alabama QB] Greg McElroy knows the names, dates, facts, figures and all-time starting lineups for his favorite franchise.

Cut a vein and watch him bleed Crimson?

Actually, Think Blue.

"I can tell you the Dodgers' lineup right now, top to bottom," McElroy boasted in a meeting room not far from the Alabama trophy room where Mark Ingram's Heisman Trophy just moved in.

OK, then, do it.

"James Loney at first," McElroy said, "Second base we've got [still unsigned] Orlando Hudson, shortstop we've got, obviously, the great Rafael Furcal, third base we've got Casey Blake. Left field we've got Manny, who else, and Juan Pierre when Manny was on his 'vacation'; I can't believe they traded him [Pierre], he was great.

"Center field we have Kemp and then right field, Andre Ethier, he's my favorite."

Alabama and Texas are playing Thursday for the Bowl Championship Series national title at the Rose Bowl.

If former Dodger Raul Mondesi, the Alabama quarterback's idol, was flipping the pregame coin, well, McElroy might have to collect himself before the first snap.

It's almost too funny.

The guy leading the Crimson Tide into Pasadena was born in Los Angeles, raised in Texas, and made his name in the state where the stars fell.

And now he's leading 13-0 Alabama against 13-0 Texas, not far from where he lived his first decade.

The only thing that would make this better? If Colt McCoy were a Giants fan.

Well, it won't be the first time I've rooted against a Dodger fan.

Hook 'em Horns!

Horns? Noooo! What gives, brother?

I just returned from a recon mission in Old Pasadena. Can report there are still a number of Ohio St. and Oregon (mostly Oregon) fans still enjoying our fine city. Also, the city is now changing over the light banners to a TX/AL BCS theme. Finally, there are already a ton of TX supporters shopping, enjoying the 78 degree weather, and getting hammered in my local pub.

Dodger fan or not, Horns come first. And he was a fan of Pierre? "That guy was great"? ugh...

Mondesi's too busy flipping votes.

I don't know if McCoy is a Giant fan, but he does wear orange.

PrimeTicket is again replaying their year by year Dodgers retrospective (True Blue Stories). I've seen it 45 thousand times, but still get hooked.

Please make the season start soon. 42 days til p & c report.

Again, the guy loses credibility by calling Pierre great.

Unless he means "great at being a shitty player", and the last part was left out.

DB, do you hate the horns from the old SWC days? Or just because? I dislike the horns because of that hillbilly Mack Brown (but Saban ain't worth rooting for either)

Sorry DB,
Dad was born in McKinney, TX and was always a Horns fan. Guess it's in my blood.

Exactly re: SWC. I grew up in that era, so the hatred runs deep.

I loved that basketball back then, right before the hogs went to the SEC. I loved watching those Tom Penders Texas teams especially when they went up against Arkansas. If they didn't get to 100 each, I was disappointed. Lenzie Howell!

Making me weepy, FB!

I remember waaaaay back when AR vs. SMU was Joe Klein vs. Jon Koncak...those games would end up being 34-30 at the final buzzer with a lot of fouls and bad blood.

Fred's Brim said...

haha those stiffs! well their stiffiness wasn't fully realized until they made the NBA, but still.

A buddy of mine is from Arkansas (Camden) and in college, he loved the Hogs despite going to a school that was as good in basketball. He would get mad when we said Joe Klein was his favorite Arkansas player (especially when it was really Scotty Thurman)

Kyle Baker said...

After Scotty hit that shot to beat Puke in 1994, I drunkenly pledged to named my first-born "Scotty Thurman Baker." I don't have any kids at this point, so I haven't exactly reneged on my side of the bargain. But I did get the chance to tell that story to Thurman one time and he got a kick out of it. How funny would it be if I had a daughter, though?

40 Minutes of Hell

Then: Nolan Richardson-designed full court press on every defensive play.

Now: Waiting in line at Chavez Ravine to pay $13 for a warm beer drunk from a plastic cup.

He's obviously a moron since he thinks Pierre was "great".

Fred's Brim said...

good call on the 40 minutes of hell

and based on the post before, I won't tell you what my college team is....

@FB-

Uh-oh.

Steve Sax said...

FB, say it ain't so. You're a dookie?

Fred's Brim said...

it is so. Do I get a pass for having actually gone there?

Kyle Baker said...

FB-

Such a cheap excuse. Phhhhhfffftttt.

Fred's Brim said...

hehe that's the most I could hope for

On the bright side, I'm glad to see the old FB avatar back. All is right with the world.
