Do You Make This Deal?

From MLB Trade Rumors:

Via Twitter, Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the Padres almost dealt Heath Bell and Adrian Gonzalez to the Dodgers for James Loney, Russell Martin, Blake DeWitt, James McDonald and Ivan Dejesus. Wow.

Wow indeed. And now for the question: Do you make this deal? Yes or no? Answer in the poll on our sidebar!

(After you vote, click here to see if you agree with Ned Colletti.)

And here are the results from our previous poll:

So little love for Billingsley. I know he's struggling, but damn.

Russell Martin's the deal-breaker.

I just don't know if I can take rooting against so many former Dodgers on one team.

I agree with MLASF. Why deal one of the best catchers in the NL for a guy who hits all of his HR's in the first half and a closer with suspect credentials?

That deal makes no sense, and I suspect that someone was floating an absurd rumor for kicks.

Drop Martin and switch McDonald with a pitching prospect and I just might make the deal.

That deal, though? No way.

No way. After getting Sherrill, the marginal value for Bell diminishes significantly. Thus, too many key players in this mix.

No way. The lure of a Big Deal should not cloud logic, and in this case it did not. Good (non) move!

Drop Martin for a prospect and it is a deal. Or drop Martin and McDonald and Bell and it is a deal.

But I doubt this ever was really offered up. A massive player swap by two division rivals would be silly.

Baseball writers love to take the slightest hint of a rumor and blow it into a big trade story. As long as they keep referencing an unnamed source they are in the clear. Some journalism. Any story with an unnamed source as the only source is not worth the paper it is printed on...or in the case the electricity used to get it to you.

Billingsley is 3rd for me, after Bison and Kershaw.

I think I'm in the wrong thread.

Bell needs to go to the AL so he can claim the riches of his All-Star tank job. I would have only done this deal if they drop Martin and include the San Diego weather.

yea, who is going to catch for us if we trade martin?

this deal never would have happened.

im pretty sure the rumors are made up by the writers.

I'll go against the grain and say yes, I would make that trade. Russel Martin, in case you haven't noticed, has struggled for a full season now. He is about to get expensive through arbitration and has Scott Boras as an agent (no discounts).

My answer would be HELL YES without a doubt if we still had a kid named Carlos Santana in the system, but even still, the upgrade Gonzalez brings is tremendous. Adrian Gonzalez is the type of player to build a franchise around and minimizes the sting when they let Manny go be Manny wherever someone will pay him. Franchise player with the stats to back it up.

Unless MLBTR is failing me, Martin is not a Boras client.

I think if the deal is for Ethan Martin and Scott Elbert instead of Russ then I am fine with it.
