Game 123 Thread: August 21 vs. Cubbies, 7p

Feeling a little Randy tonight?

Randy Wolf (7-6, 3.43) vs. Randy Wells (9-5, 3.01).

COMMENTS: Randy W. vs. Randy W.! Chicago's Randy W. is a rookie ground-ball pitcher, and his numbers certainly seem impressive. The Dodgers' Randy W. was a monster in his last start, and if Jeff Weaver is the pitching staff's unsung hero, then Wolf is becoming the rotation's anchor.

(Game Thread superstitions in play: 1. not referring to our opponents by their proper name, 2. posting the GT at one minute after the hour. Smells like another win!)

fanerman said...

Nice to see the Bison continuing to hit 2nd.

rbnlaw said...

So is tonight going to be Loney's turn to wake up?

Also, game 1-2-3. Has to be a good thing, right?

Steve Sax said...

@Dusty: thank you for posting the lineup for tonight's game!

Dusty Baker said...

It was my last official act at work before the weekend.

Andrew said...

Randy W. vs. Randy W., so of course they will both get NDs.

koufax said...

sf 2 - col 0

koufax said...

sf 3 - col 0

Nic j said...

Lets go giants?

koufax said...

best case scenario, we take care of some business tonight and giants beat the rockies

Dusty Baker said...

That was hard to type, wasn't it, Nic J?

Nic j said...

I don't know if I'll ever be the same after typing that.

Dusty Baker said...

Those wounds run pretty deep.

koufax said...

sf 3 - col 1, E velez

rbnlaw said...

Damn you, Eugene!

fanerman said...

Can't they both lose?

rbnlaw said...

I don't know what's stranger; pulling for a Giants' win, or the chance of a rain-out in August?

I'm thinking the former, not the latter.

Dusty Baker said...

Yeah, strange weather. I feel like I need to go down to the storm shelter or something.

Andrew said...

Magic Number is 38...too early?

karina said...

@Andrew never it's too early

Epale all!

Dusty Baker said...

Yanks have posted 15 on BoSox. They weren't all your runs, but nice start, Penny. *eye roll*

Erin said...

Penny is a disgrace. I was taking a nap during the beginning of that game, and I had a few nightmares.

Nic j said...

Haha, loretta passing out the purell.

Dusty Baker said...

I noted that Loretta sanitary move. How funny.

Nic j said...

Doesn't want to catch any of the cubbies loser germs I guess.

koufax said...

is it really worth booing milton bradley? i mean im not a huge fan of the guy, but he just seems so insignificant

Dusty Baker said...

1-2-3 down they go.

Dusty Baker said...

Cubbies = Cooties

koufax said...

aaron cook leaves the game after 3 innings, apparent injury.

karina said...

I don't get the Loretta-Purell incident.

Nice, Master Randy!

rbnlaw said...

Our eternal optimist is in the house!

Thanks to Erin's blog, I can't get the Kid Cudi song out of my head. Good thing I couldn't understand the lyrics. . .and I speak English regularly.

rbnlaw said...

I'm liking the Bison in the 2 slot.

koufax said...

@rbnlaw

i agree just hoping he hits a few balls a little farther than that tonight.

rbnlaw said...

Infield hit! We're off to a powerful start against a sinkerballer.

rbnlaw said...

Looks like they're pitching Manny inside. Go figure.

koufax said...

giants cruising 6-1

rbnlaw said...

6-1 Giants on a 3 run Rowand home run.
Wow. Is it bad to feel good about this?

rbnlaw said...

Looks like you and me koufax.

koufax said...

one lawyer and one 3L a match made in heaven rbn

koufax said...

he has the hook working tonight

Josh S. said...

Epale peoples!

Looks like Avatar is going to be the real deal. That 15-minute IMAX 3D preview thingy that screened tonight was pretty awesome.

rbnlaw said...

3L? It's not too late to consider culinary school.

I am now officially glad Soriano didn't want to play on the West Coast.

Dusty Baker said...

Thx, Josh. I had heard conflicting accounts of AVATAR previews. Not a big fanboy kind of guy, but this one seems intriguing.

rbnlaw said...

squeeeeezed!

Josh S. said...

Wow, the crowd is really into Randy's curveball. Nice to see.

koufax said...

rbn my loan creditors may disagree with that.

koufax said...

havent hit one out of the infield yet.

rbnlaw said...

@koufax:
Ha. Forgot about the intentional 3rd party beneficiary to your law school contract. Enjoy the free Westlaw while you can.

koufax said...

hey hey!

rbnlaw said...

What did I say about Loney at the beginning of the thread?

Ken said...

my nickname for loney is the garbage man

u prolly know why

rbnlaw said...

I'm going to fall off my chair if they have Russ bunt.

karina said...

Leave King James alone! (just kidding)

karina said...

Ken, why do you call King James "garbage man"?

rbnlaw said...

Wondered what happened to you karina.

koufax said...

boot! nice baserunning russ

Ken said...

sorry karina
i know loney is ur boy

Dusty Baker said...

now we've hit one out of the infield.

rbnlaw said...

Did Vinny say, "When that hoppens?"

koufax said...

ya wolf!

Ken said...

oh baby!
wolf is a stud!

rbnlaw said...

WOLF POWER STRIKES AGAIN!!

koufax said...

is there such a thing as wolf mode?

Nic j said...

Hahahahaha

wolf has been unreal.

rbnlaw said...

Jedi master helps his own cause.
Got to find a way to get his bat in the line-up everyday.

Dusty Baker said...

Karina lies low until someone says something derogatory re Loney, then she pounces.

karina said...

The force is strong in Wolf.

Ken said...

thats taking matters into ur own hands

other pitchers on the staff should take notes

Ken said...

hey karina do u live in socal?

loney is gonna be on melrose at crooks and castles

rbnlaw said...

So your pitcher doubles in 2, and your lead-off K's? The world is turning in reverse.

karina said...

I live in Maracaibo, Venezuela :)

You talk like i had some crush on King James, which is very untrue.

koufax said...

hate to beat a dead horse (pun intended) has anyone heard anything from jason schmidt since he got DL'd

Orel said...

Wolf = Owings?

Steve Sax said...

Hi guys. I show up late and it's the same thing: Dodgers winning, Wolf mashing, and Ken trying to pick up karina.

Steve Sax said...

Spake Karina, Ken, rbnlaw, Koufax, fanermam, dusty, and anyone I unintentionally missed!

Steve Sax said...

"Spake" was supposed to have been "Epale"

Ken said...

everytime i ask karina a question
people always say i'm picking her up, actually only saxy boy says that

last night was amazing
sat with my chicago friend from college

Steve Sax said...

Orel, I thought you were night shifting tonight! Epale to you too

karina said...

Epale Sax!.

I didn't know Fuld was on the big leagues...

koufax said...

i think that is the definition of seeing eye ball

rbnlaw said...

Well that's not good.
Welcome, Sax.

Steve Sax said...

@Ken, I'm just overly protective of Karina, but it's all good. We're all friends at the SoSG bar!

rbnlaw said...

That tag was high and the play closer than it should've been.

rbnlaw said...

@Sax:
My compliments. The beer is especially cold tonight at the SoSG Bar.

koufax said...

nyy 20 - bos 7

Dusty Baker said...

@ Sax

Since you're at the bar, could you send a gin and tonic over...I'm empty. Tanqueray Ten if you have it.

rbnlaw said...

6-1 Gnats over Rox; top of 6.

What's up with the Yanks? No pop in those billion dollar bats.

koufax said...

lovin the kemp in the 2 hole

Ken said...

has anyone else prepartied at shortstop on sunset?

karina said...

Pisco, Tanqueray...a man of taste.

rbnlaw said...

Wells must be elevating the ball slightly.

rbnlaw said...

@Ken:
Did you say, "Shortstop?" Ask Dusty.

karina said...

Bison steals!

koufax said...

someone should tell baker not to stand on the tracks when the train is coming in

Orel said...

I am, Sax. This is what happens when I turn my computer on.

Orel said...

Karina, did you do your interview yet?

Ken said...

shades of raul mondesi

koufax said...

100?

Ken said...

ouch funny bone

koufax said...

ouch off the elbow, blake is a man for shrugging that off

Dusty Baker said...

@ Karina

Yep, some good taste in booze I have. The kind you just can't at Short Stop. However, you can get cheap-ass retro beer like Pabst Blue Ribbon and have a hella time (@Ken). Sweet place to get in the mood for a game. I've always liked the idea of pre-game pub runs like you can do in Wrigleyville in Chicago or even in the bars around Camden Yards in Baltimore. This is the closest thing we have to such. At least until the McCourts build up that new area behind center field.

karina said...

I did, Orel. I talked for almost 2 hours (they kept asking questions), it was sort of funny like the people making the documentary think i'm weird because i'm a young woman who loves baseball.

Dusty Baker said...

@ Karina re interviewer think it's weird

Keep being you!

Dusty Baker said...

Just hit me...we can root for Rockies to lose, not for Gnats to win. Problem solved.

karina said...

@Dusty i can't because Aguilas star player is there and is in a hot streak right now.

rbnlaw said...

DB: good thinkin.

Dusty Baker said...

Yanks 20 - BoSox 11. They're coming back, Erin!

koufax said...

haha lee's decal falling off his batting helmet

Orel said...

That's why we love ya, Karina!

karina said...

@Dusty always be yourself!. They were sort of adorable, making jokes i should be the face of this, because they had to interview "bald, old or ugly guys".

I felt weird sitting in front of a camera, usually it's the other way around.

Steve Sax said...

It's all over in boston. Ny Yankees 20, red sox 11. 4.0 IP for Penny with 8 ER.

Dusty Baker said...

That's not a bad outing for Penny these days.

The lazy fucker.

koufax said...

tonight is jason giambi bobblehead night in oakland, slightly ironic.

Dusty Baker said...

Padilla looking good (via Dodgers website):

LOS ANGELES -- It was only a bullpen session, but with Opening Day starter Hiroki Kuroda out indefinitely with post-concussion syndrome, Vicente Padilla's impressive Thursday workout eased at least one concern for pitching coach Rick Honeycutt.

"If you had any thought of him not being healthy, there was no sign of that," Honeycutt said Friday. "You could see he had good life, his arm strength was there. We wanted to make sure he had been throwing. He showed he had. He looks like he's ready to go."

Padilla, signed Wednesday after a messy departure from the Texas Rangers, is scheduled to start for Triple-A Albuquerque Saturday, and, barring something unforeseen, will be promoted to start for the Dodgers on Thursday in Colorado.

Dusty Baker said...

@Koufax

Cleveland should have saved the surplus V Mart bobbles and shipped them to Oakland for tonight.

Dusty Baker said...

Cubs may need to pitch around Wolf for this next @ bat!

koufax said...

if hudson actually gets contact i feel a dp coming on with those swings

karina said...

I had to wait for a while and someone gave me a book about the history of baseball in the state i live. I started to browse and i found an interview to Maury Wills. it turns out he played in Maracaibo (when the city had 2 baseball teams) just before his first season at the MLB, he rocked the house that season!

So this someone asked what i was reading with so much interest and i said:"i didn't know Maury Wills played here"

Reply: who's Maury Wills?

I realized there's a parallel reality where people isn't aware of the Wills awesomeness.

Dusty Baker said...

great story, karina!

karina said...

edit: aren't aware.

koufax said...

@karina

last time i was at chavez ravine, saw mr. wills walking and he stopped and talked to me for a while and signed my ticket stub. very nice guy.

Dusty Baker said...

I'm glad we dont' play a drinking game involving Vinny and his saying "little nubber."

Dusty Baker said...

RDub has hit safely in his last 4 at bats!

koufax said...

wolf has had some great swings, maybe he should teach manny how to hit

Dusty Baker said...

way to work the count, RDub!

koufax said...

randy not adept at baserunning.

koufax said...

where was mariano on that one?

Orel said...

Raffy's turn in the barrel.

karina said...

Be right back, I have to call my brother.

koufax said...

wolf cruising along

Dusty Baker said...

Come on, Bison. Prove your 2-holeness.

Dusty Baker said...

Newly-clipped Beard Mode.

koufax said...

nice grab by "i dont know your name" in center field

koufax said...

wolf, 74 pitches through 6

Ken said...

wats the pitch count for wolf?
they might want to let him finish it off.
at least dun let broxton try...

Steve Sax said...

Can someone describe the Furcsl/Maryin FLY-OUT dp? WTF?

Ken said...

@ koufax

u read my mind

Dusty Baker said...

Let's get some insurance runs.

(And for my sis-in-law, some runs just for fun).

Steve Sax said...

That should have been Furcal Martin

Paul said...

At the game. Second row in right field next the cubs pen. The shortstop was awesome! Too many cubs fans around. Let's get them packing in the bottom of the 6th!!!

koufax said...

sax

wolf was on first, martin on second, wolf thought there were 2 outs ran all the way to second and kind of messed martin up. martin got tagged going into 2nd.

koufax said...

wolf through 7...again

Dusty Baker said...

Can I just say:

RDub!!!

koufax said...

i would have spun wolf out there again in the 8th

Dusty Baker said...

agree wholeheartedly, koufax.

koufax said...

although if juan scores that would be nice

koufax said...

and there you have it folks

Josh S. said...

Fack.

Yep, they shoulda left Wolfie in.

Why is Joe so hesitant to let his guys go the distance?

Nic j said...

Well that really effed our inning.

Josh S. said...

I'll just go ahead and call a Bison homer here.

Josh S. said...

Or that. I'll take that.

koufax said...

center fielder was lucky, that had inside the parker written all over it

Ken said...

crap they are gonna put in broxton for the ninth >_<

koufax said...

here we go bullpen!

Dusty Baker said...

Flat Breezy in tha heezy!

Ken said...

i hope torre didnt make another mistake

koufax said...

we have to have the pound for pound heaviest 8th and 9th inning bullpen in the league now right?

koufax said...

hey walk the leadoff hitter who cant hit worth crap, that will end well

Dusty Baker said...

And if Bills starts a game for them, his thighs plus Flat and Brox's girth increase the pound for pound pitching ratio to astronomic proportions.

koufax said...

anyone notice the cubs only have 1 hit? i just saw that.

Ken said...

wat happens if brox blows it again

karina said...

Can't reach my brother, he wants to know how i did :(

Go Flat Breezy.

koufax said...

ken lets keep those vibes a little more positive for now

Ken said...

koufax

i cant
the bullpen have made me hit the rolaids and pepto very often lately

Erin said...

I'm late on this, but I just wanted to tell rbnlaw that the only lyrics you need to understand in the Kid Cudi song are in the chorus. And when you know it's a parody of Lady GaGa's "Poker Face," it makes even more sense.

It's not the dirtiest song I've ever heard (that award might go to "Put It In My Mouth" by Akinyele, which is just so vulgar), but it's not exactly family friendly either.

Dusty Baker said...

I think Sam Fuld is Vinny's designated man-crush for the night.

koufax said...

ok one more

koufax said...

INNNNSSSSSUUUUURRRRRAAAANNNNCCCCEEEEE please

Ken said...

need some insurance here guys

Ken said...

@ koufax

we think alike

koufax said...

i think broxtons got it in the 9th tho

koufax said...

wow!

Ken said...

sucks for manny

Erin said...

No wonder Vin Scully has a man-crush on the guy. That was a homer!

Dusty Baker said...

weather held that one up.

koufax said...

i was about to ask if manny still hit home runs, guess not.

Josh S. said...

How dare you, Sam!!

Yep, now Vinny will never stop talking about him.

I think he had a ball in his glove already.

Ken said...

now loney

mr garbage man

hit one out

Dusty Baker said...

we should sneak manny back out there and let him have another chance - it was just too close.

we can use the "danny ramirez" guise once suggested by i think Josh S way back when.

Erin said...

It seems the vast majority of my hits today came from people who searched for pictures of Russell Martin's girlfriend. Did something happen with that woman today? I have no idea why I would suddenly get hits on that post, which I wrote at the end of June.

Dusty Baker said...

His GF was on the THINK CURE telethon right before gametime. She's pretty cute I have to say.

koufax said...

here we go big john

Josh S. said...

Alright kids, dig in tight and drink your nerve tonic of choice.

It's Broxton time!

koufax said...

by the way if anyone hasnt seen inglorious basterds yet, i recommend it

Erin said...

It looks like people are just sticking around my site long enough to drag and drop the picture on the desktop for later use.

Ken said...

i would like to see the link to the picture

Dusty Baker said...

I should also say she was very well spoken and seemingly dedicated to the THINK CURE cause, as was Eye Chart's wife. They were both very good on camera and smooth in their answers.

Erin said...

Thanks for the info, Dusty. I was really confused.

Dusty Baker said...

@ Josh

Switching from a quaint syrah to gin.

Erin said...

If you Google "Russell Martin girlfriend" the bikini picture in the "image results" that come up about halfway down the page leads you right to my page.

Erin said...

I've seen the woman at two Dodger game (including Wednesday night). She's cute enough in person. She was with kids from the children's hospital the first time I saw her, and she was really sweet with the kids.

Dusty Baker said...

Jesus, Vinny and Sam, get a room!

Dusty Baker said...

@Erin

I chalk it up to the masterful insight and keen wit you display on your website, not the promise of a bikini-clad J Mart honey.

koufax said...

give him the high cheese

koufax said...

thanks for listening john

Erin said...

Thanks Dusty.

Josh S. said...

Of course, it comes down to DLee.
