Post-Game 127 Thread: James Loney, Freed At Last

DODGERS 6, ROCKIES 1

The Dodgers took a game back from the Rockies tonight in Colorado, on the backs of Randy Wolf (7.1 IP, 5H, 1 ER, 2BB, 5 Ks), Andre Ethier (3-for-4 with a pair of home runs in the first and fourth innings), and James Loney (2-for-4 with a dagger three-run HR that scored Manny Ramirez and Casey Blake).

George Sherill and Jonathan Broxton, both well-rested after sitting idly by in last night's debacle, came in for the final 1.2 innings of no-run ball. The Dodgers stretch their divisional lead back to three games and ensure that we'll leave Colorado after tomorrow's matinee with sole possession of the NL West lead. Everybody drink (but not too much; day game tomorrow has a 12n start)!

I love HFYPGT's much better than MFPGT's.
A win tomorrow would make everyone breathe easier, especially going into the Natti where the Reds love us and want us to sweep them.

Oh, I looked up the box score for the game played the day I was born.
Koufax started and went 5 2/3; Norm Sherry made an appearance; Ron Perranoski got the win. Maury Wills went 3 for 6. He was a great lead-off man (hint, hint, Forkal).

I wanted that win like a chain-smoker on a non-stop flight to Jakarta wants a fix

Lucky basterds. I was born in February. Though the Lakers were playing the day I was born. The result left much to be desired.

I'm raiding the beer fridge, at Sax's insistence.

Josh S. said...

A win? Huzzah!

Hospital has wifi, btw. Mrs. S is being monitored for the next hour. It definitely looks like the little guy will be born tomorrow during the day.

good luck josh!!

Steve Sax said...

Then we'll need another win tomorrow for Josh Charley Steiner S.! You heard him, Vicente!

Josh S. said...

I just saw the name ideas in the game thread. I will say that, while he's not named for him, he will share the first name of a current member of the 40 man roster.

Also, at one point, we were genuinely close to naming him Broxton.

I Alivandi said...

How about naming him Jeanson, to be interesting?

Steve Sax said...

Orlando it is then!

Just added to the PGT: day game tomorrow; Game Thread goes up at 9:01a. Be there!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Names to consider: Sandford, Donald, Jack, Roy, Steve, Ron, Davey, Bill, Fernando, Orel, Steve, Kirk, Mike, Maury, Jim, Edwin, Walter, Gil, Harold, Vin (my favorite), and of course, Thomas.

NicJ said...

Apparently Brad Penny has asked for and received his release from the Red Sox. Thats two years in a row he has left before the season was over.

Im guessing he will end up on the rockies. Which probably isnt a bad thing for us.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I said "Steve" twice. Disregard that.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Josh's son is going to be named....Andre S.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

And Mr. C was right (isn't the C always right?) and the Count got off the gate on the sugar rush and had the sugar crash late in the game.

NicJ said...

Beastmode S?

Steve Sax said...

@NicJ: of course the Red Sox let him go. A Penny saved is a Penny urned.

Steve Sax said...

Thank you Rancho Cucamonga! Good night!

Steve Sax said...

@neeebs: no doubt the Count avatar helped tonight. Strong work.

rbnlaw said...

Dammit Sax! Beat me to it.

I believe the fall-back name is Manny. George? Breezy?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

He said 40-man, not 25-man, so it must be someone on the inactive list. I'm going to guess Jason.

NicJ said...

wait Josh said 40 man, thats a hint so the player is probably not on the active roster.

CHIN-LUNG S.

NicJ said...

Jesus A S.

NicJ said...

Travis, he even has the right last initial

rbnlaw said...

@MLASF:
To continue with the thought:
Tommy (D or L), Willie (D), Pee-Wee, Wally, Peter, Wes (my friend used that one for his son), or Joe.

@Nic:
Penny does like to get a jump on hunting season. Maybe he wants to get back to Oklahoma and clean his guns. Lord knows, no one wants him to pitch for them. Against them, yes. Not for them.

NicJ said...

A.J. S.

all initial?

rbnlaw said...

Doug?
Hong Like a Chi S.?
Milton? (Eric)

Freed at last, freed at last. Thank god almighty, Loney is freed at last.

For tonight.

Jackie would be a nice name in honor of one of the greatest Dodgers.

On second thought, I call that name for when I have a kid.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I was gonna use Jackie. Though for me, it has three meanings, one of which is for Robinson.

Kyle Baker said...

@MLASF re: naming kid Jackie

*schoolyard-speak* But you didn't call it so I own it.

Kyle Baker said...

Reading through the GT, so wanted to say:

@ Fred's Brim-

Amen on the work productivity, or lack thereof, tomorrow. It is fuckin' ON. Work is the curse of the Dodger class.
==
Also, we really have to flip O and Furcal in the lineup. Furcal is just out of his mind shitass.

Finally, to all you Sam Adams lovers out there (I mean people who like the Boston brewery, not people who have a crush on the Founding Father), I just got this email from the brewery:

"We had such a great reaction to our Summer Styles Variety pack last year, that we decided it was time for a variety pack that showcased many of our full flavored brews that are perfect for autumn. The Samuel Adams® Harvest Collection features beers that are the color and flavor of fall: Samuel Adams® Octoberfest, Samuel Adams Boston Lager®, Samuel Adams® Irish Red, Samuel Adams® Brown Ale, Samuel Adams® Cherry Wheat, and new and specially brewed for this package, Samuel Adams® Dunkelweizen!"

I might never leave the house.

Steve Sax said...

@DB, you're on the Sam Adams email list? Cool.

I once drank beers with Jim Koch before the rest of my (large) group got there for a brewery tour. He had some triple bock to let us swill. That man sure can put 'em down.

Steve Sax said...

You know, it's funny that we "open the gates" to a GT three hours ahead of first pitch, and people show up to comment (and there's no BP to watch).

But it's even cooler that we keep the taps flowing with PGT and we all keep hanging out at the bar for a couple more rounds. No last call here, intrepid SoSG readers!

Kyle Baker said...

@Sax, was he actually putting the Triple Bock down? That would be tough for me to do.

Can't wait to try that Dunkelweizen! (I think that's what I told my prom date, too.)

Kyle Baker said...

@Sax, It is cool, cool, cool, indeed.

Steve Sax said...

It might have been double bock, I can't be sure. All I know is, I was in fighting form, and I couldn't keep pace with the master. Pretty impressive.

I'm opening a Sammy up tomorrow based on this conversation alone.

Paul said...

I hope everything goes well Josh for you and little Vicente Coltrane Garvey Guinness!!!

Dodgers win! Where is that ewok music from return of the Jedi when you need it?

Kyle Baker said...

That is damn neat that you got to have a coupla "co-colas" with him. I have newfound respect for him. (And you, of course.) Sam really does some neat stuff. My issue is just that it's hard to find some of the smaller batch offerings, even though I live in an area that has a lot of upscale grocery and liquor stores. Buddy of mine who used to run a Pasadena bar said that the Sam Adams distro people for the LA area are some of the biggest a-hles in their biz, so that may have something to do with it.

Kyle Baker said...

Paul said:

"Vicente Coltrane Garvey Guinness"

That is just brilliant. No Guinness pun intended.

Kyle Baker said...

I'm watching MLB Network nightly wrapup. In the Rays at Jays game, not one but TWO umps got hurt and had to be taken out of the game. So I was thinking, why didn't they just bring in those two guys who do the umpire imitations to finish out the game?

rbnlaw- Wills was anything but a great lead-off man. Career leading-off:

.335 OBP
103 OPS+

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=willsma01&year=Career&t=b

He was worse than the average player for his career in general.

OBP: .33O
OPS+: 88

I Alivandi said...

Remember that Jackie was Jack to everyone who knew him. Jackie was, as Rachel said recently, his stage name.

Here are some other great names: Hideo, Takashi (call him Sammy), Aristedes (Manny's middle name), Ismael.

How about some crappy player names? Wilton? Chad (Fonville)? Delino (SOSG excepted)?

Ken said...

still not impressed with James Loney

Fred's Brim said...

DB, Thank you, the work productivity is suffering already!

here is what I am visualizing this morning for this afternoon's game. We break out with double digit hits and a few walks, maybe a HR, and score a good amount of runs, 8-10. Vi Padi, staked to an early lead, pitches fine, giving up 2-3 runs in 6+ innings. The bullpen finishes up cleanly and they all have a enjoyable flight to Cincy. Is this my pre-game post-game thread? PGPGT!

LLCoolL said...

Favorite Sam Adams Flavor: Dunkelweisen
Least Favorite: Triple Bock

karina said...

@Ali Aristides is a great name!

Josh, many congrats to you and Mrs. Josh! (again)

karina said...

@Ken you might not be impressed but it was a great night for him and hence, the team. In a important game.

Nostradamus said...

So are we going to keep the PGT going and just roll right over into the game thread, then?

karina said...

Furcal at ESPN deportes sportscenter:

He talks about the importance of the series and finalizes with:

"we all try to play our best"

*sigh*

Steve Sax said...

@Mr C: Game Thread should go up right about now, funk soul brother!

Kyle Baker said...

@ Mr. C:

I think we're being kicked out of the bar. However, there is another GT to migrate to now, so let's pay our tab and head out.
