Clayton Kershaw (8-7, 2.96) vs. Bronson Arroyo (11-12, 4.43).
COMMENTS: "I love these bounce back wins, but I also get leery at scoring so many in one game," wrote SoSG reader rbnlaw, and he has a point: Every time the Dodgers have scored at least nine runs in a game this month, they've followed up by losing the next day. It's happened four times, most memorably when the Dodgers outscored the Brewers 23-14 in a series — and lost two of the three games. Now that takes some skill.
Kershaw may have a winning record, but he's winless in his past seven starts. Arroyo may have a losing record, but he has a 1.89 ERA in his past five starts. So the Dodgers are battling a few negative trends today. Let's hope the Rockies and Giants continue to beat each other up, and the Boys in Blue can outleg the Small Red Machine.
Oh, and if you've actually had Skyline Chili, please describe the experience in the comments section. I can feel my arteries thickening just by looking at that picture...but I'm strangely attracted at the same time.

Are you sure there's chili under all that cheese and spaghetti? I'm unconvinced.
Wow. I never thought I could crave cheese and chili this early in the morning.
If it weren't going to be 104 fucking degrees with smoke and fire where I live, I would brew up a good chili today.
I have no idea what I am going to do with the rest of my Sunday afternoon. The Dodgers game so early is unnatural
Furcal, SS
Pierre, LF
Ethier, RF
Kemp, CF
Blake, 3B
Loney, 1B
Martin, C
Hudson, 2B
Kershaw, P
Beast Mode in full effect.
Hope quoting me on the mainpage has some mojo, but my uneasiness remains. The Dodgers need to jump on the Canyon boy and get to that miserable Red bullpen.
@DB:
What kind of degrees are those? If they do what you say they do, I'd like to see them here in OC, where the smoke has finally drifted.
It's time for Dodger baseball!
Bloody Mary Mode in effect, too!
I'm still waiting for yesterday's PGT.
Epale all!. Time for Dodger baseball, which i'm craving a lot.
Good 1st inning for Kersh
Kershaw looks good so far.
That sucked, Loney
Who's Darnell McDonald? he and his 2 RBI HR suck big time.
It's Young Mc's cousin, actually.
Didn't know that, Dusty Baker, thank you.
By the way, i was reading yesterday's GT and you asked where i was going. See, i have a friend who's a fashion designer and his brand (along with a partner) was selected to participate on Madrid's Fashion Week in the Young Design programming. They are the first venezuelans to be selected EVER!
They were doing a fundraising party and i was going there, obviously. He was my classmate in college and he's a very good friend.
Party started at 3 pm but i got a little bit later. We had lots of fun and ended in my house, i went to bed at 6 , after cleaning the mess :).
@ Karina
Cool on the up and coming Venezuelan fashion front.
Hey, did you see that Sheva is GONE form Chelsea as of Friday?
I stopped by to say just one thing: no-hitter.
It will end in the fifth.
Thanks for the prognostication, Erin.
You should formulate this into a quatrain and live a mystical life here on out so that in several hundred years, people will take your predictions as signs of the apocalypse.
@DB - Roland Emmerich does it for a living. Why not?
Nice backwards K
ERIN, YOU'RE FUCKING AMAZING
Arroyo's leg kick is annoying...Kemp thought so too just now and hit one out!
I'm actually intrigued by that 2012 I saw the trailer for yesterday.
Kemp is dialed fuckin in.
Dodgers reaction? go Blue!
Erin, i love you. You're the best!
Lyons, STFU about Kemp's throw. He just hit a HR 438 ft and is the god damn man. Just let it go.
@DB we discussed that last night. I want Sheva to be the best, maybe all he needs is a little bit of home-cooking. Guess you're happy he's not around in Chelsea.
This one is tied!
@ Karina
I am happy. I don't have anything at all against him as a person or even a player, but he is just shite in the English game the way it is played. Good luck to him, but also good riddance - he cost us an arm and a leg!
9 Kershaws now. I think giving up that HR just pissed Clayton off.
I would like to see the 4-K inning
give the guy some freaking run support!!!
Anyone else hear Eric Karros call Pierre the Dodgers MVP in yesterdays game? He really has lost it
Gagne-
I head that and wondered why no one commented on it in the GT. We probably all agree that Pierre has made major contributions this year, especially in Manny's absence, and has generally handled it with class...but god damn, MVP? EK, stick to growing your hair out wildly and we'll remember all the great HRs you hit for us. But shit, calm down with the Pierre rhetoric.
Pierre was MVP during the Manny suspension
Kershaw's in a bit of trouble here.
Manny suspension: 50 games
Season: 162 games
Also remember that after a great start, Pierre's average took a huge dip and he came back to earth.
Votto is having a nightmare game vs Kershaw
11 Kershaws.
If he had a quality start last time, he really deserves a win this afternoon.
he is prolly not gonna get a decision today, as the offense has taken another day off
@Dusty - I completely agree. One of the reasons why I like Vin (and Chick Hearn when he was still with us) was that they call(ed) the game and didn't force their idiotic opinions on the audience or feel like they had to be controversial. In today's telecast format of a play-by-play guy and a color commentator, the color guy is usually some former player who's ego is so big that they actually think the fans are watching the game to listen to them and their opinions actually matter when we actually just want to see the Dodgers and put up with them because we have to. Nowadays during road games when Vin isn't working, I put the game on mute and listen to music or enjoy the silence.
90 pitches so far. Torre should run him out in bottom 7th.
people are entitled to their opinion, such as you guys on SOSG
@ Gagne
Yep, exactly what you said. What I'm really concerned with is that Dodger mgmt hasn't, in my opinion, done enough thinking around Vin succession planning as there isn't much left in the tank after he retires.
I would mute the non-Vin games and listen to the radio but the feeds are too time disparate that it's not feasible.
Arroyo is looking like a Cy Young winner versus the Dodgers
I want some Erin's magic. Where are you, Erin?
@ Ken
But we aren't being paid to do anything. It's not really a comparable situation. Television commentators should call the game and present facts and information to viewers. SoSG posters aren't required to do such.
KKKKKKKKKKKershaw is back out there. Good move.
I'm back ever so briefly to say that I like the Dodgers' chances of scoring in the next inning.
Beginning with a pickoff for the 2nd out, right Erin? Wow, you're good.
Hmm. I didn't know that it was pitcher's spot, Furcal and Pierre coming up, but I'm sticking with the prediction nonetheless.
We go to the 8th. Let's get some runs!
Maybe they bring in Manny to pinch-hit...
And they do. So that increases the odds of my prediction coming true.
Yep, Manny.
God dammit, Manny. Jesus christ, that was such a pitch to yank out. I could have taken that out.
Juan was due
I like what JP has been doing lately: just smacking it up the middle hoping to hit it where they ain't. That's what someone without much power should do. Furcal, watch him.
Come on, Andre. Get a hit.
@Erin
I started reading your blog, it's great. I was laughing at Kemp getting on you cause of Kid Cutie lol
Do they IBB Phillips?
Breezy for sheezy!
I would have strongly considered IBB, but the fly out to Kemp worked, too!
Let's get a run or runs and put this to bed, guys!
Loney, this is your last chance to hit a HR before you come back home for awhile and go 0-home stand in the HR dept.
Come on, Russ...you're waaaaaaaaaay overdue.
That's one way to do it, JMart.
Nice one O-Dog
Not an intelligent at bat from O. Wish he would have tried to work a count instead of just swinging at the first thing he saw.
oh God
Troncoso when its tied
bad news
Hey, we're not losing!
Nice pitch
not winning either
@Orel and our bullpen is better than theirs. There's a good chance here.
sexy
manny wants to hit one out
Dusty
do u live near pasadena or tujunga
Manny's swing is all out of whack.
Here we go!
Wow, the DP ball is killing us.
@ Ken
Yep, in Pasadena.
What Loretta just did. That's what I was hoping Furcal would do.
That was an ugly inning.
Ethier doesn't look good today.
Clearly Ethier wasn't reading this blog from the dugout, including the point I just made about working a count and not swinging at the first pitch.
This first-pitch swinging is killing me.
Damn, Kuo. That stuff was filthy. That was an NC-17 kind of pitch.
Hasn't anyone figured out swinging at the first pitch doesn't exactly work today?
@DB "Clearly Ethier wasn't reading this blog from the dugout"
When will he learn?
Rox and Jints under way now.
@ Orel
Can we set up a way to push post comments via email to E's smartphone?
@DB - If you have crazy good hacker skills, then yes.
@ MLASF
Damn, scratch that plan, then.
I thought good things only happen when you swing at the first pitch, like walks.
NO DP CB!
This at bat for Kemp was everything his last one wasn't: patient and intelligent. Way to work it, Bison!
Let's go, Blue. I'm getting antsy. Or squirrely. Or some other animal-ly.
Am I correct in calculating that Kershaw has 12 NDs and Wolf has 13?
Watching Giants-Rockies on TV.
I say we go 18 today. As soon as the game is over today, I get to do a bunch of yard work and it is 102 right now.
@ Orel
CB: OK!
I'm trying to delay my lunch as long as possible.
To quote myself:
"Loney, this is your last chance to hit a HR before you come back home for awhile and go 0-home stand in the HR dept."
Can Casey steal home straight from first base? Is there some kind of rule against that?
No, Casey, go the other way! Go home!
Beard had that base stolen.
No pressure, but the Rockies are up by one already. Two outs.
If Martin grounds into a DP, so help me...
@Dusty - A single works also
JMart, I will either be mad at you all day or put your bobble on the mantle for all to worship depending on this at bat. It's up to you.
@ Gagne
Plus, a bunch of singles draw the game out longer, thus prolonging your yardwork procrastination.
We could use one of the wind assisted homeruns right now.
We need more optimism when they are on extra innings as an away team.
We need more optimism period!
Come on, O...have a smart at bat. There's an open base, and Manny is on deck.
O-Dog has failed today
I've tried, but I can't continue. I must brave the smoke-infested air for some lunch.
I was hoping our good hitting with runners in scoring position would carry over from yesterday. Nope.
It always seems like the "save some runs for tomorrow" rings true
@Dusty - Are you related to my girl friend? haha!
@Orel thanks for the support.
Eric collins will you shut up about the bullpens scoreless innings streak
At least we've neutralized Votto.
Martin boom!
Rolen forgot he was 312 years old.
And by "boom" I mean "throws out Rolen"!
Martins throws to second have been looking so much better. That's good to see.
Manny vs. Cordero.
Manny vs. Cordero.
Manny vs. Cordero?
Manny vs. Cordero! Manny walks!
Raffy vs. Cordero.
I can do this all day, folks.
The Manny booing is really, really getting trite. Don't you have anything else to do with your puny lives, commie fans?
Furcal, you have to LOOK at the pitch coming at you. You can't just swing wildy and hope it makes contact with the bat.
Ohfortoday, Furcal. Nice work.
I start to freak out about Furcal.
Dusty, Castro is in.
Castro doubles! Who would've thunk?!
Haha, with all this commie talk and Castro gets the big hit.
RANCHO RANCHO
Up to you, Bison.
Fires are w/in two miles of Mt. Wilson, where much of LA area gets its telecommunications capacity. If this game doesn't end soon, I might lose internet and telly.
Patience Kemp
The dodgers archenemy. The sac fly.
Do we have someone named McCarthy to put in to stop this red menace?
Bison!
That'll do
I gladly stand corrected.
wow that almost missed being a slam
One more would be nice.
Come on Beard Mode. You are all competing for a special bobble place of worship for the rest of the day.
Geico, Casey!
@ orel
geico?!
Deuces wild, Vinny.
One will have to do. Brox has this one.
Gagne-
Bring out the John-Mower, then it's time for you to hit the lawnmower.
And furcal isn't in there to make any errors.
We always have to make things interesting.
Apparently Rosales doesn't get that a walk is a free base. Sprints to first.
Rosales was scared Broxton was going to eat him.
Russell blew that one. It wasn't a surprise that the ball was coming to the dirt.
haha
anyone listening to the radio hear that woman in the background?
she is yelling stuff to broxton
Oh boy, passed ball. Two outs to go...
You are all clear kid let's save this thing and go home!!!
We can't let a guy named Corky beat us.
Porky vs. Corky.
I have a bad feeling about this.
Broxton...sets up the DP?
Damn it, Broxton. These are the Reds!!!!
wth broxton
What the living fuck are you guys doing, Brox and Martin? Can you imagine doing this against Yankees in the WS? Think about it. I might be pissed off even if we win.
Broxton should approach his pitching like he approaches his eating: no nibbling.
You'd think of all people Broxton would be able to find the plate. Put a side of bacon on the plate, Martin.
Stubbs only HR is a walkoff.
Damn, that's a downer, Nic.
@dusty. Canadian Bacon?
Vinny, guess what the deuces are?
YAH
It's a win!Go Blue!
Castro beasts the Reds! Who would have guessed. Strong suspicion some of this metaphor will work its way into the SASBWTIPGT (Scary As Shit But We'll Take It Post Game Thread).
Yay for the Dodgers win...*sigh* for having to do yard work now
They've claimed two series in a row. Go Blue!
Rox-Jints tied at one. Can it end this way, please?
HYPGTUP!
