Game 72 Thread: June 24 @ White Sox, 5p

MANNYWATCH: 8 GAMES
DODGERS' RECORD WITHOUT MANNY: 26-16

The Albuquerque Isotopes' mascot, Orbit.

Randy Wolf (3-2, 3.29) vs. Gavin Floyd (4-5, 4.65).

COMMENTS: Let's take a gander at the Dodgers' past five starts:

date starter opponent IP # of pitches result
6/23 Kuroda CHW 8 2/3 103 W
6/21 Kershaw LAA 7 107 W
6/20 Weaver LAA 5 66 W
6/19 Billingsley LAA 6 112 L
6/18 Wolf OAK 6 87 W

It's a small window shown here, but the trend of Dodger starters going deeper into games is encouraging. Hopefully Wolf can build on the improvement shown by Kershaw and Kuroda, and actually get a win this time as well. Another positive sign: The Dodgers have won seven of Wolf's past eight starts.

As with yesterday's White Sox starter John Danks, Floyd's numbers belie his strong pitching in recent outings. The Dodgers benefited from getting to Danks early, as he eventually recovered and shut them down for five innings. A similar hot start today would certainly behoove Wolf. (Of course it would. I just wanted to use the word "behoove.")

And don't forget Albuquerque. Manny Ramirez is scheduled to play five innings (a whopping 25 percent increase!) with the Isotopes tonight, starting at 6 p.m. The 'Topes set a attendance record last night, with 15,321 fans present. Just call it the Manny Effect.

I won't be able to keep track of this game, so comment up a storm, people.

Fred's Brim said...

The Isotopes outdrew the Marlins by 5000 people last night

Gibby's Limp said...

FB - that's AWESOME! LOL

Juan Pierre, LF
Rafael Furcal, SS
Orlando Hudson, 2B
Casey Blake, 3B
Andre Ethier, RF
Mark Loretta, DH
James Loney, 1B
Russell Martin, C
Matt Kemp, CF

I really just don't get it.

Josh S. said...

It does seem that, after the 1-3 spots, Joe tends to pull names out of a hat. It's just that he doesn't put Matt Kemp's name into the hat until he's pulled at least 4 other names out.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I've heard that Torre wants Kemp at the end so he can "lead-off" in the other innings, Tony La Russa-style.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Good 'Ole Juanie, never wasting any time.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Wolf's got nothing tonight.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Wow, tough inning!

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Dodged the bullet.

karina said...

It could have been lots worse.

Orel said...

I don't think Wolf is going deep in this game.

Orel said...

Beard-off walk!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Ethier moves Blake to second. It's now up to Loretta and Loney.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Loretta drives in Blake! Tie game!

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Loretta with the RBI

karina said...

Wpuld it be time for Big Game Geoffrey?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Got a good feeling about Loney.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This is one long at-bat.

karina said...

He's taken 12 pitches so far.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Loney draws the walk, and Loretta acted like he was in a rundown.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Gordon can't bend it like Beckham.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

RA for Bison.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

WP! Loretta scores.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Here's where Kemp can justify Torre batting him ninth.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The official scoring is very confusing in this game.

karina said...

For a K while bases loaded? i think it'd better for the team if Bison hit on the first slot and Pierre is ninth.

karina said...

A double here would be ideal (or greedy)

Orel said...

One hit, three runs. Charity begins at home!

karina said...

I'll take this: Dodgers 3-White Sox 1

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hell, I'll take it.

Orel said...

I like how we're getting two-out runs today.

Orel said...

Floyd already at 70 pitches?!

karina said...

The sooner they get rid of Floyd, the better.

Orel said...

Has Manny been up yet?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Nope. Still in the top of the first in New Mexico.

Orel said...

Well, Alexei Ramirez owns Randy Wolf.

Orel said...

Solo shots we can deal with.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Oh, diddly poo.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

A two-run bomb from Jermaine Dye.

NicJ said...

Wolf is working really working to geT that ND tonight.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Middle of the first in Albuquerque.

Orel said...

Oh crap, I thought there was no one on for that HR. And that Ramirez hit it. Whoops.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Wolf has nothing.

Orel said...

Manny's up!

Orel said...

"Wolf has nothing."

Which will make tonight's win all the more impressive.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Manny walks.

Orel said...

Manny walks.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Torre better get J-Mac ready just in case.

Orel said...

Aflac: The Dodgers lost 2 games in the 1959 World Series. Who were the losing pitchers?

Orel said...

Russell single!

Orel said...

We are making lots of contact, at least.

Orel said...

Aflac: Roger Craig, Sandy Koufax

Orel said...

Wolf continues to struggle. Leadoff walk.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Quiet day.

karina said...

Wolf has been lucky, Damage could have been deeper.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

A whole lotta nothing.

NicJ said...

I hope wolf isn't hurt.

Josh S. said...

*sigh* At least it's not another no-decision.

karina said...

Edit: damage is as it should be.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'm surprised Torre didn't bring in J-Mac to act in long-relief.

NicJ said...

Nice to see Wade. Hopefully he can earn back some trust, he has been good lately.

Unknown said...

Who's up for another ND for Wolf?

Unknown said...

Field's homer was hit on a good pitch. He just turned on it.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

They're in the bottom of the third in Albuquerque, with Manny in the hole.

Unknown said...

Anyone notice the Cell is shaped a bit like a crappy version of Dodger Stadium. I saw a game there once, it isn't great.

Unknown said...

I love how the 'topes have Manny leading off. Perhaps he really is Juan Pierre now :-P

Unknown said...

Manny just grounded out to Alcides Escobar.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Manny grounds out to the shortstop.

Unknown said...

Beat ya MLSF.

Interesting how even MiLB has Gameday now, though not as good as the MLB one.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Well that was a perfectly good waste of a leadoff hit.

Unknown said...

Yes MLSF, yes it was. Ethier did make Floyd work. Still, the Dodgers have owned Floyd in the past, so they should be flogging him now.

Unknown said...

Isotopes down 0-1 on an Angel Salome HR.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

And Konerko connects.

Orel said...

It's ugly, but it's also early.

Unknown said...

I like that Wade is getting his zip back on his heater. 90-91 is a good place for Cory to be.

Unknown said...

Except when he does that.

Orel said...

And the White Sox hit their fourth HR.

karina said...

Alcides Escobar is a prospect for the Brewers and plays for Cardenales de Lara in winter baseball.

Fred's Brim said...

just checking in - i didnt realize we were playing in Yankee Stadium tonight

Unknown said...

Joe Koshansky just abused the knuckler again.

Sounds - 3
Isotopes - 0 0 0

Unknown said...

Wow. The Sox are hitting really good pitches from Wade.

Orel said...

Is that the Phillie Phanatic?

Unknown said...

Cory Wade's curveball is one of my favorite pitches in baseball.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This has officially become a slaughter.

Orel said...

Home run derby!

Fred's Brim said...

really?

that was a meatball there

Unknown said...

You are shitting me with this.

Unknown said...

Fred's Brim - That was his crappy changeup.

Fred's Brim said...

here comes James with the mop

Orel said...

At least we get a McDonald appearance.

karina said...

Back to back HR nights for Konerko. Why is it always a former Dodger?

Fred's Brim said...

crappy changeup = meatball

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I stand by the idea that J-Mac should have come in, not Wade.

karina said...

The hook came too late. Anyone watching this on tv?

Josh S. said...

Kablooie. We're doing great if our goal was to exhaust their fireworks supply.

Fred's Brim said...

i'll do it - 99

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

100

Unknown said...

Fred's Brim - Absolutely.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I guess J-Mac just made me look like a fool.

Unknown said...

Now this is just getting ridiculous

Orel said...

Wow. Get it all out of your system, boys.

Fred's Brim said...

holy crow - this is sad

Josh S. said...

Free Meatball Night!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

And to think, the Dodgers actually held a lead in this game.

Unknown said...

J-Mac tore Beckham apart, then got that pitch to Fields on the inner half up. Almost the same location that Wolf pitched Fields when he jacked his HR.

Unknown said...

J-Mac has come out of the pen throwing heat again. I like that.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

10-3. I'd expect that score from Browns/Chiefs, not Dodgers/White Sox.

Unknown said...

Hey, if the WhiteSox can score 9 runs in 3 innings, the Dodgers sure as hell can score 7 in 3.

Fred's Brim said...

James for two more innings, Leach for 1 and then hit the hotel bar?

karina said...

At least the Angels are winning over the Rockies, 1-0. Marquis doesn't look any good, he's all over the place (that's the game i'm currently watching)

Fred's Brim said...

Lotsa meatballs

Unknown said...

Anyone look at Marquis' official photo? '70s porn star anyone?

Unknown said...

On the plus side, Russ is 2-3 and has been on base all 3 ABs.

Unknown said...

The Angels have tagged Marquis for 3 in the 1st, have 2 men on and Jeff Mathis, the man who can only hit with RISP, at the plate.

Fred's Brim said...

he came off early

karina said...

Alireza, i love how you bring up the good side of this game.

Unknown said...

Karina - Hey, one does need to have a laugh during a laugher. Besides, Manny will be back soon and the Dodgers are the best team in baseball. Getting our asses kicked one night isn't a horrible thing.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The White Sox may have this game, but we still have 1959.

NicJ said...

at least Marquis wont be the first 10 game winner in the NL, i hope.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The transition to an Angels GT is seamless.

Unknown said...

Nic - Ron Jeremy Marquis threw 30 pitches in that inning. He won't last long enough at that rate.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Hey, I'll be damned if you start calling Marquis "Ron Jeremy". That is a name solely reserved for Stan Van Gundy, and dammit I'm gonna keep it that way.

Fred's Brim said...

jeez James, just throw strikes for chrissakes. half of these guys are no better than the bums you were striking out down on ABQ

NicJ said...

I only root for the angels when it affects the dodgers.

Go "LA's" second best (baseball) team.

Orel said...

Almost a triple play!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Manny left the game, but did not stay for the 5 innings previously stated. He was in for 4.

Unknown said...

MLSF - You are right. He is now re-anointed Harry Reams Marquis.

karina said...

Alireza, that's right.

If you want to talk about the Angels, that's fine with me, it's the game i'm watching. I'm mad at Directv because they've broadcasted only Angels games for the last couple of weeks and none when they played the Dodgers (of course). In mostly boring AL/NL west teams, why they refuse to show games of the best team in baseball by far?

Unknown said...

Saunders is in a bit of a jam with Atkins at 3B, Hawpe at 2B and 1 out.

Unknown said...

Wow. That was totally a ball to Pierre. I think the umps want out too.

Orel said...

A classic Juan Pierre double!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Only Beast Mode can get doubles like that.

Orel said...

Did Manny only get two ABs again?

Unknown said...

Ok Juan, start something here.

In other news, Saunders just blew away Iannetta to make it 2 outs.

Orel said...

Way to move the runner. Nice to see small ball when we're down seven.

Unknown said...

Ah, the trademark Juan Pierre bunt pop double.

Orel said...

Woo hoo! 10-4 White Sox!

Unknown said...

Make that 6 Orel ;-). Thank goodness Podsednick's arm isn't much better than Pierre's

Unknown said...

Saunders gets Stewart to get out of the jam. The Angels are just the team to put the Rox in their place.

karina said...

"Juan Pierre doubles (15) on a soft pop up". It sounds impossible, doesn't it?

Unknown said...

Looks like Joe has given up too. Casey gets the rest of the night off.

Orel said...

" 'Juan Pierre doubles (15) on a soft pop up'. It sounds impossible, doesn't it?"

He couldn't have placed it better if he had thrown the ball.

Unknown said...

Karina - It would if he didn't do it at least once a year. I wish Juan would do that more. I would love to see him hit a bunt pop home run.

Unknown said...

Let me just say that this outing for J-Mac is a promising one. He is getting a ton of movement on his fastball, which he was never known for.

Unknown said...

In other news, Figgins nearly hits a home run and gets Aybar over to 3B with just 1 out.

Unknown said...

Ok. Gobble sucks. Here's hoping we can do something with him.

Unknown said...

Bobby Abreu just cracked a double to score Aybar. Angels lead 4-0 and the Marquis de Sade is looking terrible.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The Dodgers need to at least make the score respectable, like 10-6 or 10-7, something around a save-situation.

Unknown said...

MLSF - Perhaps a save situation with the bases loaded in the 9th and a GS to tie?

Unknown said...

Gobble basically threw Ethier the exact same pitch 4 times. I guess that slider is tough for a lefty to pick up.

Steve Sax said...

Well, I suppose this was a good one to miss.

NicJ said...

struglin' with andre.

Unknown said...

Wow. When was the last time someone pitched around Mark Loretta?

Unknown said...

Angels have Abreu on 3B, 2 outs and Vladdy at the plate.

karina said...

2 run HR by Vlad

karina said...

Angels 6-Rockies 0

Unknown said...

Vladdy just corn holed Marquis to LCF and the Angels are running away with it.

Orel said...

Here we go! Seven-run rally!

Unknown said...

Ok Russ. Remember what you did to that Jered Weaver pitch? Do that again.

NicJ said...

when did this place turn into "Sons of Wally Joyner"?

Unknown said...

Anyone for a Rally Turtle when Russ comes up?

Unknown said...

Nic - ROTFLMAO. Great reference.

karina said...

Orel, make it a 8 run rally!with two outs!

Unknown said...

Damn. Russ gave that one a ride.

Unknown said...

Wouldn't it be funny for Matt Kemp, everyone's prototypical number 9 hitter, to go Earl Weaver on one?

Steve Sax said...

two on, two out for our #9 hitter

Orel said...

BISON 3-RUN HR!

Unknown said...

In play, run(s)

Orel said...

And that's why Joe Torre bats him ninth.

Steve Sax said...

And THAT'S why you bat Matt Kemp ninth.

(Arm falls off--namely, Jimmy Gobble's arm)

NicJ said...

maybe thats why he is batting ninth.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Save-Situation Mode!

Unknown said...

Prototypical number 9 Bison there.

Steve Sax said...

Orel, where's the AD love, with a comment like that?

Unknown said...

Gobble is a Turkey with that 8.18 ERA.

I'll be here all week.

NicJ said...

damn, JP get all of that one, in the bad way

Orel said...

Damn. Plunked Pierre right in the upper back.

Steve Sax said...

I'm not watching the game, but I hope Kemp was running around the bases screaming "gobble gobble gobble gobble gobble"

Unknown said...

Is Juan ok?

Steve Sax said...

The Gameday arc of that pitch that hit JP is not good.

Unknown said...

I love Gameday.

Octavio Dotel replaces Octavio Dotel.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Juan's ok. He took a pitch right to the back. No doubt retaliatory after Wolf plunked Konerko.

Steve Sax said...

Gameday says Octavio Dotel is replacing Octavio Dotel.

Steve Sax said...

Alireza, you beat me

NicJ said...

he looked pretty pissed

Unknown said...

As long as Juan is healthy enough to be traded for Jared Washburn, I am happy.

Steve Sax said...

Furcal's 0-for-4. Were any of them well-hit?

NicJ said...

I wish someone would hit AJ, just because.

Steve Sax said...

Ali, stop this Washburn talk.

Unknown said...

MLSF - If it was retaliatory, Ozzie would have sent in someone who throws hard like Dotel or Thornton. Just ask him.

Unknown said...

I like Joe Saunders. Just had a quite 1-2-3.

NicJ said...

As long as Juan is healthy enough to be traded for Jared Washburn, I am happy.

does seattle need a lesser version of Ichiro?

Steve Sax said...

Furcal and Ethier are unfortunately lineup-dividing 0-for-4s tonight

Steve Sax said...

199

Steve Sax said...

200

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Ali, I would expect you to know that no one can understand the mind of Ozzie.

NicJ said...

i would think we need more bullpen help than anything.

Steve Sax said...

I'm not even on the continent and I'm swiping 100 multiples

Unknown said...

Lets see one of those 1 handed Furcal homers.
