Post-Game 46 Thread: Dark Wrigley

DODGERS 8, CUBS 5

The lights went out in the fourth inning at Wrigley Field Wednesday night, but the Dodgers had brought the curtain down much earlier that evening, scoring five runs in the first two innings to give Chad Billingsley (5.1 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 Ks) some breathing room in which to operate. Casey Blake went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and a solo HR, and James Loney was a HR short of the cycle, having gone 3-for-5 with an RBI. Jonathan Broxton earned a five-out save, entering with one out and a runner on first and getting Ryan Theriot to hit into an inning-ending double play, and then had a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win.

Padres and Giants are each still in play in their respective games this evening, but second place was secure for us irrespective. Let's see if we can pick a game up pending these outcomes.

That was much better. Scary but better.

Cards and Padres still scoreless in the middle of the sixth. What the hell happened to the Cardinals? I thought they were vying for first place, but apparently they don't care (the Cards werre shut out 1-0 yesterday to SD).

Nats up on SF 6-1 in the sixth.

The Cards play in the NL Central. They can tread water all year and then turn it on once every other team in their division trades away half their roster at the deadline.

Paul said...

Point and laughs at Giants.

Damn Petco.

NicJ said...

Lincecum just fell apart today, again. I think he might be having issues with his back again.

The defense has been ATROCIOUS the last couple of games, and piss-poor most of the season.

We send Ely tomorrow to go for the kill.

karina said...

@Mr LASF Ely and kill instincts are synonyms.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I hate the Cardinals.

NicJ said...

pads take lead, 1-0 again.

wtf

NicJ said...

are we the only team that can score runs off the padres?

Been really busy and missed 2 GT's in a row. It saddens me, but a win at Wrigley warms my heart.

Now to rest.

rbnlaw said...

Oh, and fuck the Giants. The Pod Rays don't bother me so much. As long as they're in our division, they still have to go through us.

NicJ said...

TACO BLOWS A SAVE!!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

THANK YOU, RYAN LUDWICK

NicJ said...

tie game.

rbnlaw said...

Zimmerman almost went yard.
Just can't quit this thread just yet.

rbnlaw said...

See, the Pods are just renting the space. Time for an eviction.

rbnlaw said...

Martina Stavinoha strikes out to kill the rally.
Damn her.

karina said...

edit: I meant "killer instincts"

Steve Sax said...

Bottom 9 in SD, tied at 1

leadoff walk to venable, then Vincent d'Onofrio bunt pop fouls out but Venable still takes second. That's as good as a sac, with one out. StL doesn't look hungry.

Watching game on Tivo...I took a screenshot of the broadcast when the lights went out and before they cut away. Any need for such?

NicJ said...

STL is saving their good stuff till they play us.

NicJ said...

uh oh MSB up.

rbnlaw said...

Gnats lost. All is well.

NicJ said...

Motte with the tiny k.

free baseball.

Steve Sax said...

At least MSB Ks with a RISP to end the ninth

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Is it just me or has Matt Holliday not lived up to the hype at all this season? And yet nobody's talking about it like they were last year.

Steve Sax said...

10th inning
pujols ground out
nutshot ground out

I thought these guys were supposed to be potent

NicJ said...

both on one pitch each too.

Steve Sax said...

10th inning continued
Freese in the five-hole Ks for the third time tonight, going 1-for-5

on to the bottom of the tenth, 1-1

@MLASF
Once you're no longer a July trade rumor, you're hotness fades.

Steve Sax said...

All over in SF, Giants lose 7-3 and Lincecum takes his first loss of the year with a 4.2 IP, 6 ER performance

oswalt got the win for Houston over Milwaukee; he's 3-6

NicJ said...

Nutshot is collapsing under the pressure of his own huge contract.

Zito'd

Josh S. said...

MLASF: Are you saying he's been neutered?

Kyle Baker said...

Go Nats!

karina said...

Heading to 11th...

Steve Sax said...

Top 11
rasmus single, then he steals second with none out. Can STL score him?

Paul said...

I think the crowd is chanting let's go dodgers.

Kyle Baker said...

I had to drive home right about the time the power outage occurred (at Wrigley, not the Phiwwies offence), and then ended up starting from the beginning on Tivo so I could take in the whole game. So missed the rest of the GT. However, reading back over, I note what has to be the line of the night re the outage. It comes to us from Karina:

"It's Chicago, not Venezuela..."

Well played, Karina!

Paul said...

Basehit and.....still tied.

Steve Sax said...

Cards have men at the corners, no out

Paul said...

Everytime I watch a Padres game at Petco I hear the other team's fans.

Paul said...

Wow ugly.

NicJ said...

its nice to know we are the only ones that do that BS

Paul said...

It is time for Yawner Baseball!!!!

Paul said...

I am surprised they haven't started a beat LA chant.

Kyle Baker said...

"It is time for Yawner Baseball!!!!"

I read that in the voice of the little kid who says it before the beginning of home Dodgers games, not in Vin's voice, for some reason.

Kyle Baker said...

How 'bout those Celtics?

Paul said...

Dusty

I had Ross Porter saying it in my head.

Paul said...

Broom chin is going to blow it here.

Paul said...

Cue up the final countdown this is intense, it is a question of who wants it least.

Kyle Baker said...

Broom Mode?

karina said...

@Dusty Baker I wasn't trying to be witty and/or funny, it was my trauma and frustration talking spontaneously.

Thanks anyway!

Kyle Baker said...

On to the 12th

karina said...

Gameday stopped working again. What's up with Blogger and Gameday not working tonight for me?

Kyle Baker said...

It was geopolitically funny, Karina!

Paul said...

He sweeps up the Padders.

Hey the red birds were talking about Ross Porter!!

Hmmmmm Porter.

Steve Sax said...

Cards fail to score, unbelievably, with runners at the corners and none out

Padres get a leadoff HBP and sac him around to third but strand him.

More baseball!

Paul said...

Last of the Mujicas.

Paul said...

That would have been out in a mini park.

NicJ said...

The cards have had some of the weakest at bats I have ever seen in these extra innings.

Kyle Baker said...

"Cards fail to score, unbelievably, with runners at the corners and none out"

Sons of Vince Coleman fellas are probably jumping off tall buildings.

Steve Sax said...

Pujols is 0-for-4 with two walks, and Nutshot is 0-for-5. What. The. Hell.

I feel like I'm on a Rick Dempsey cruise and those guys might have the potential to possibly get a hit, perhapsmaybe.

NicJ said...

Maybe impatient is a better word.

Paul said...

This the kind of game I would love to be at if they promised to reopen the alcohol sales in the 14th.

Kyle Baker said...

I am probably the last to know this, but there is a http://sonsofsamhorn.net/

Kyle Baker said...

Lucky 13 coming up!

Paul said...

Dusty

i think the sons of Vince Coleman are lighting firecrackers right now.

Steve Sax said...

13th inning. Matt Holliday leads off by grounding out, making him 0-for-6.

I'd tell him to sack up, but he clearly has.

Steve Sax said...

two more strikeouts ends the Cardinals' effort in the top of the 13th. On to the bottom of the 13th, 1-1.

Paul said...

I say homerun derby for the win.

Kyle Baker said...

Cards offence is jsut sputtering. They need to think about hiring former slugger Mark McGwire to show them how it's done.

Steve Sax said...

if i'm not mistaken, the cardinals' radio crew just talked right through the half-inning break. wow.

karina said...

"hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over, hey now, hey now, when the world comes in, they come, they come, to build a wall between us, we know they don't win"

I'm invoking the power of 80's songs so the Crads win this game.

Steve Sax said...

Ballgame. Jerry Hairston Jr HR with two out in the 13th. SD wins, 2-1.

St Louis, you suck.

karina said...

Bad mojo, it's my fault, not Hairston's or Boggs'

I'm sorry.

karina said...

@Steve Sax no, I suck. Shouldn't have trusted in the terrible and chaotic power of an eighties classic.

Kyle Baker said...

I like Karina's typo referring to Cards as "Crads." We should use this in the future. The Crads. Heh. Makes it sound like crabs, or craps.

Paul said...

Karina.

I just found that song in my archives back in the 90s I had 80s nostalgia. Now I have nostalgia of what was listening to in the 90s.

I am getting old.

Stupid Padres.

Steve Sax said...

karina, no worries! There's freedom within. There's freedom without.

The 80's aren't working too well for us around these parts lately. But I've got other ideas in store...stay tuned.

Nostradamus said...

I'm still not convinced the Pods are for real, so I'll grudgingly accept their win. Giants lose, Dodgers win, (almost) all is right with the world.

karina said...

@Paul you are not getting old, you're getting wiser and more interesting, ok?

@Steve Sax in the Sons I trust :)
