Somehow the expected offensive massacre did not materialize tonight. The Dodgers' tomato can, Ramon Ortiz, allowed three earned runs over four innings, and the Padres' Weeble, Jon Garland, wobbled but didn't fall down, allowing two ER over six.
The two teams traded robotic punches all night, and there were six lead changes in the game. The top of the order — Messrs. Martin, Kemp, Ethier & Ramirez — went 7-for-16 and did all the scoring, Kemp with what would be the game-winning two-run homer.
Then it came down to the bullpens. The Padres' first reliever, Luke Gregerson, surrendered Kemp's homer, while the Dodgers bullpen — Messrs. Sherrill, Weaver, Belisario, Kuo & Broxton — allowed only two runs hits over the last five innings.
A true team effort brings the Dodgers one game closer to first place. Tomorrow brings us a Kershaw-Correia tilt, which should be another fun one.

WE KICK NL WEST ASS
Let's not discuss the other two divisions though.
that same formula took us to the postseason last year.
Remember in the game thread when I said the 7/20/09 Schmidt start was the standard I was holding Ortiz to?
Schmidt:
5IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 2SO, 0HR
Ortiz:
4IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 4SO, 1HR
Schmidt's ERA after that game: 5.40
Ortiz's ERA after tonight's game: 5.40
Freaky.
Cue "Twilight Zone" music.
You meant that our bullpen held the Pads to 2 hits over the last innings, not runs.
Man Joe looked very Bowastic in that interview. I hope he sleeps well tonight.
Stupid Lyons stealing my Bonds line. I guess he is reading the posts again.
@Mr LASF the other two divisions will surrender.Mark my words
I tried to be respectful and cicilized to the Padres fans as they slunk out of Petco, tails between their legs and whimpering, unconvincing cries of "Beat LA" emanating from their uncreative lips.
^civilized
I love lamp. I love lamp.
I'm sure the Pods are saying, "What the hell, bro?" right about now.
corrected
I'm guessing "tried" is the operative word there.
Paul, what was your bonds line that psycho-Lyons stole?
Just got through the GT comments. Loved Josh S' "GAARP" comment. Good stuff.
I still don't get the Andre = Barry Bonds thing; was it something he did in the game?
Also, it's sad that we only have four video highlights of this game (at least on the iPhone), but it's cool that the two Dodgers-favored ones are Vin's call, while the Padres-favored ones are from their tv station (which has a HUGE scoreboard indicator graphic btw)
Big win tonight. Love it.
Dusty, the last dodger game at petco i went to i noticed how much they over do the whole "Beat LA" thing. It was even Beat LA towel giveaway day. I know a rivalry is nice but you think you would try to base your franchise off of beating more than one specific team.
But hey, its the padres.
I've already pointed out how lame the "Beat LA" chant is that other cities do, so I'll try not to again.
Sax,
The Bonds comment was when the Padres intentionally walked Andre to face Manny.
It was akin to the "anybody but Bonds" strategy back in Bobblehead's prime.
Yeah those silly Padres focusing so much of their marketing on playing and beating one rival. They probably even make you buy tickets to other games just to see the Dodgers...so silly.
Does anyone know if we play the Yankees this year?
