Dan Haren struck out nine Dodgers in the first three innings tonight. No problem — John Ely was nails, using 105 pitches to hold the Diamondbacks scoreless until the seventh inning, when George Sherrill pitched to one batter and let the D'backs back into the game. (Don't be surprised if Sherrill hits the DL soon, with Charlie Haeger replacing him.)
Fortunately, Russell Martin's three-run homer kicked off a crazy nine-run scoring binge that started in the eighth inning and the rest, as they say, was histrionics. How ridiculous were the last two innings? Put it this way: Jamey Carroll had two RBIs.
But back to the man of the hour: Congrats to Ely, who figures to have earned his way into the starting rotation, especially with Vicente Padilla unavailable for at least the rest of the month. And if they ever decide to make a sequel to "Sahara," we know where they can look for their leading man.

Hopefully this thread will work better than the GT.
No promises.
Alright, alright, alright
I want to keep Ely
Seriously, if they (front office) dick around with Ely now, it will prove they're morons not just fools.
We are just a bunch of Cold War Kids, trying not to be robbers and cowards.
Dodgers WIN!
I'm stoked that the offense woke up, too.

Bringing over a theme from the GT:
I flipped over to the end of the Angels game to try to see what sort of the the ladies were wearing. I couldn't tell, though, because NO ONE WAS THERE. Pathetic attendance.
Angels lose. 5 games below .500. Too bad, so sad, your dad.
Josh S with the "dry" humor.
Nice one Nic! Way to turn up the heat!
I can't stop myself. I have a problem.
I really shouldn't, but I drought I'll be able to resist…
You guys should gobi more original.
This thread has taken a Negev turn.
I hope you guys never dry up.
Frisco on the verge of losing. I'd rather the Pads and the Giants find a way to somehow lose simultaneously, but I'll take what I can get.
Jints loss > Daddies loss
Jints lose the game! Jints lose the game!
wait, what happened to all the sahara jokers?
don't tell me you've deserted us.
Giants lose!
I'm sorry, is it taboo to say "Giants" on here? Do I need to refer to them by nicknames?
Let's not get heated here, Sax.
Tease for tonight's KTLA sports report:
"Bullpen problems for the Dodgers."
Huh? Did they stop watching after Sherrill pitched?
Oops. Got arid of my S again.
Well, Monasterios has sweated out the first month of the season. Just five more to go.
Oh, and I stopped watching after Sherrill pitched, but only because my DVR started recording two things.
@Sax
No one has deserted the puns.
We are like Sand People easily startled but soon back..and in greater numbers.
Watched the KTLA recap of the game. No mention of the bullpen. Now I'm really confused.
It's the misguided traveler who tempts the Tuskens' hospitality.
You guys are still dune the desert schtick, huh?
The Tusken Raiders would be a great college name even if it has raiders in it.
Anyone catch Varitek's HR over the GM tonight? Sickeningly long.
Sherrill DL'd in time for Friday, McDonald or Elbert or Towers recalled to start that game seems plausible.
Unless Ortiz pitches on 2 days rest.
/Torre would do that.
//Let's hope he doesn't.
"Anyone catch Varitek's HR over the GM tonight? Sickeningly long."
That's what she said.
holy smokes, our win division probability in the sidebar is back in double digits (13%), from 6% prior to game time.
movin' on up! to the east side!
Finally got a piece of the NL West.
Ely's coming, hide your heart girls.
Anyone?
can sherrill hit the minors for a while?
he needs to work out whatever he has wrong
