Game 46 Thread: May 26 @ Cubs, 5p

Chad Billingsley (5-2, 3.66) vs Tom Gorzelanny (2-4, 3.09).

COMMENTS: Fine. I hereby banish the 1980s music references, as the last two GameThreads both resulted in defeats for our Dodgers. Or was that our Dodgers playing at all yesterday? I thought Rafael Furcal was making his return appearance to the starting lineup, but with an 0-for-4, 2K performance in the leadoff spot, coupled with a two defensive errors (fielding AND throwing), I'm sensing the balls yesterday must have been "wriggly" indeed.

So today we go at it again, the Dodgers starting the eleven-letter Billingsley (coming off a big win vs. Dontrelle Willis; however, winless (0-2) lifetime at Wrigley Field), vs. the Cubs' ten-letter Gorzelanny, who was hit on the left hand in his last start vs. the Phillies (he still got the win, with 6.2 IP of shutout ball). Accuscore in today's WSJ says we're going to lose today, 4.7 runs to 4.2 runs, but given yesterday's blanking, I'd almost take it just to see a number other than "0" in our box score line. And how about we make fewer than three errors this time? And try and overcome the Collins Curse?

Does the ex-player curse work in the other direction?

Hey there, sailorboys!

Jason said...

The 6-lettered Furcal was creating 6 outs for his opponent yesterday (0-4 at the plate plus the two errors). Stretching this flimsy logic, 11-lettered Billingsley should be ready to strike out 11 today as karmic retribution on the Cubs.

Steve Sax said...

I confess that I tried to figure out Billingsley's record against ten-letter last named starters, but got tired of going through b-r.com game logs one by one.

Late revision. Torre's messing with my lineup mojo.

You said "I'm sensing the balls"

Two people between Loney and Johnson? Where's the symmetry, Joe?

If we don't win tonight, I swear I will do nothing out of the ordinary! I really do want us to play well. I actually get to watch tonight. Not live, but I will get to watch it later tonight!

You know that post around 2 weeks ago where some of us shared Fernando memories? I mentioned I still had the stub from the game I saw him pitch on August 5, 1983. Here's a photo of the stub (it was in an old scrapbook where we even saved the parking receipt, which is also in the picture):

http://yfrog.com/6pr7fj

$3.00 for LFP. Wish the parking receipt had a price on it so we could compare and contrast.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

If we don't win, I'm going to punch a preexisting hole in my wall.

Mr. Customer said...

I wish I still had some of those old stubs from my early days as a Dodger fan, but I fear that they have perished in one of my many moves over the years.

Mr. Customer said...

@MLASF

There is NO excuse for domestic violence.

Dusty Baker said...

@Mr C

One thing that brings a brotha down now is that so many of the tickets I have to get in the Yard these days are pieces of paper I've printed out from Ticketmaster or Stub Hub (ironically) so there are fewer and fewer opportunities to save special stubs. Taping a piece of paper with a bar code into a scrapbook just doesn't have the same pop...

Mr. Customer said...

For his own sake, I hope MLASF isn't this guy

Mr. Customer said...

@Dusty

I still have a few memorable ones from my season-ticket-holder days, plus the 3 from last year's playoffs, which are glossy and neat.

The Stubhub printouts, not so much.

Neeebs said...

I just finished donating blood at the Red Cross. Funny thing. The RN asked if I was a Dodger fan. I asked how she knew. She said because my blood was BLUE.

Mr. Customer said...

@Neeebs

Come on. Everyone knows Vulcans have green blood, dude.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Raffy's back.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

We've got something here.

Dusty Baker said...

Speaking of rodriguez, i bet the Angels are having remorse on that deal. Should have sent Wood over there.

Steve Sax said...

Can somebody run the stats on this: it seems like Blake DeWitt swings incredibly early in the count each time. And gets out.

Please get one more out

NicJ said...

already at 61 pitches.

Steve Sax said...

Chad escapes with only a run of damage! Wow.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Aren't we the ones who usually load the bases with nobody out and end up empty-handed?

Josh S. said...

Ugly, but jam escaped.

NicJ said...

karina said...

@Betsy Jobu?

Steve Sax said...

Chad's third K, a strikeout of Koyie Hill to make the second out of the inning, was critical.

5-2 after three innings. We'll need some more runs.

Josh S. said...

If Chad gets a nice rest here, he'll pull it together.

Oh, he's batting this inning.

Fred's Brim said...

uhoh power outage!

Power went oiut at Wrigley

Betsy said...

Anyone else lose signal? WTF

Matt said...

The Cubs are so bad that Wrigley Field doesn't even want to watch them!

Fred's Brim said...

MLB.tv still has the picture but no sound

NicJ said...

what happened?

karina said...

Lead off walk, that's a pretty cool way to start an inning

chexxum said...

Looks like there's a blackout at Wrigley?

Matt said...

I'm watching on WGN, they are having a blackout in the stadium...

karina said...

@Steve Sax it might an anomaly of the sample :)

Fred's Brim said...

there are toothsome coeds getting groped in the bleachers right now

It seems like bad form

Betsy said...

@Karina-Epale! Jobu is from the movie major league, once the man is done w/computer i'll send u a link :)

Fred's Brim said...

if they can't resume it tonight, is it like a rain delay where they start over? or would they resume it tomorrow in the 4th?

NicJ said...

you would expect that the dodgers would be the ones having trouble paying the electricity bill.

Matt said...

The Cubbies are saying it will be at least 15 mins to revive the gerbils that run the generator.

chexxum said...

Can we file this one under "The Curse of Eric Collins"? I think he was talking about how the Cubs always played day games at Wrigley due to not having lights...

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I always thought the history and tradition of Wrigley provided the stadium with electricity. Apparently not.

NicJ said...

Eric Collins bored the lights, they fell asleep.

Steve Sax said...

Blake DeWitt finally gets a walk, and all of Wrigley shuts down

koufax said...

my girlfriends father is at the game, was in the bathroom, lights go out and it was pitch black for a minute before the emergency lights came on

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Steve Lyons is disappointed in the electricity's lack of hustle.

Fred's Brim said...

They should put up a still of a billygoat chewing on a power cord

Josh S. said...

In other news, MLB At Bat is using a picture of John Ely for a story about the White Sox game.

Fred's Brim said...

Sorry we are experiencing Technical Difficulties

David said...

I remember a similar game like this last year. Both starters had to be replaced because the delay was too long.

Brilliant, a 3-inning start for Bills.

Josh S. said...

Neither pitcher is lights out tonight, and yet, here we are.

Dusty Baker said...

@Koufax

Did he get any phone numbers?

Fred's Brim said...

The Mets (or Citifield) have shut down the Phils for 7 more innings tonight

Dusty Baker said...

Baseball gods clearly angry at night games at Wrigley. The gods have spoken. Take down those silly lights and play the game the way it was meant to be played in that Yard.

koufax said...

Dusty - haha, not to my knowledge

karina said...

@Matt believe it or not, a couple of months ago, an iguana provoked a 20 hour blackout in the western part of Venezuela (or that's what they said).

Dusty Baker said...

I wish I was in Tijuana eating BBQ iguana.

David said...

lol, the old fashioned way where games were called on account of dark

Fred's Brim said...

@karina - was the iguana running his dryer and microwave at the same time?

MR. F said...

Update on Yahoo
Chadley struck out bunting foul
Power is restored?

Fred's Brim said...

hey we're back!

Steve Sax said...

Tv truck still blacked out

Steiner is stoked

Josh S. said...

Not back here yet.

Fred's Brim said...

that was low, blue

chexxum said...

Apparently the Dodgers broadcast booth is without power. The WGN broadcast booth was fine throughout the blackout but it just died right now. WGN is now airing the Cub's radio broadcast. Awesome!

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Maybe Gorzelanny siphoned the energy to rejuvenate himself.

Fred's Brim said...

WGN truck working, but Bob Brenly isn't better than no sound

Fred's Brim said...

this ump is still in the dark

karina said...

@Fred's Brim hahahahahahaha, that explanation could be more logical than the one they gave: the iguana chewed some wires.

Venezuela is the country that redefines the literary trend of "magic realism".

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

RT @PONealFSWest: OMF, Lyons isn't kidding. Eric Collins is calling the game on his blackberry! Awesome. Just not for our guys in truck.

Neeebs said...

Cubs strike out Bills, Furcal, and Martin

karina said...

We're still winning, let's cross fingers they ride this game without any pitcher's meltdown.

MR. F said...

Promising inning
Black out followed by strike outs
Hitting in the dark?

chexxum said...

WGN now has video!

Fred's Brim said...

does the Collins curse work when he's in the stadium or just when he's broadcasting the game?

Fred's Brim said...

no walks, Chad

Steve Sax said...

FuKKodome

Fred's Brim said...

thank you

Fred's Brim said...

Jamey Carroll would have almost touched that one

Betsy said...

To heck w/the technical difficulties and lack of defense.

Josh S. said...

So this is what Collins would be like on radio.

No better.

Fred's Brim said...

oh no - WGN was just showed Curse Collins and it cursed the Cubs into hitting into a double play!

Betsy said...

Bills likes to live on the edge!

Josh S. said...

This Collins play by play is
coming via cellphone apparently.

Fred's Brim said...

keep taking pitches, guys

Mr. Customer said...

Internet is super-patchy here in the House of Customer

Steve Sax said...

Quick work for Gorz in the fifth

Steve Sax said...

You guys have tv yet?

Fred's Brim said...

Gorzelanenannney with another good inning. we're swinging like we've got to get back to the hotel before the food in the minibar spoils

Fred's Brim said...

MLB.tv is working ok

Fred's Brim said...

as I say that, it goes green screen

Josh S. said...

Collins earns points for carrying on by any means necessary, but loses them again for saying, "We're going old school."

Betsy said...

WGN looks good

Fred's Brim said...

Bills at 74 pitches before this inning. If he can go Gorzelanny, he can get into the 7th
