Game 27 Thread: May 5 vs. Brewers, 7p

Chad Billingsley (2-1, 4.85) vs. Doug Davis (0-3, 8.87).

Gameday

COMMENTS: On this Cinco de Mayo, Chad Billingsley can act as a stopper of sorts by helping the team rebound from Clayton Kershaw's putrid start last night. Billingsley has already put together two solid starts, against Washington and Pittsburgh, and if he continues to follow another Chad's advice, the Dodgers may be in position to continue their home series winning streak.

Doug Davis has had a rough season thus far, but if you remember from his Arizona days, he does pretty well against the Dodgers. "He is 5-4 for his career against the Dodgers, with a 3.51 ERA in 12 starts," says MLB.com, so let's see if the Dodgers can build on the six runs they scored last night.

Oh, and Sax will be attending tonight's game; look for the guy on the Field Level trying the Victory Knot. And ping him with a comment in this thread (or an email to us) if you're also going to be in attendance tonight and want to grab a beer.

words: Orel; shameless self-promotion: Sax; stalking creepy scale-wielding guys in the baseball card section of Target: Alex Cora

8 runs allowed, or 8 outs?

Sorry, last night just left me a broken, bitter man.

Why is Reed Johnson still batting leadoff? XP, anyone?

Reed Johnson has a .401 OBP against LHP since beginning of 2006 RT @deadgraviti Is there a good reason for Johnson to be leading off?

I almost pity Mariners fans. Almost. They thought things would be different with Milton, but alas, he's the same moronic screwhead he always was.

NicJ said...

i think the better question is why the hell is Martin still in the two spot.

Kyle Baker said...

What sort of god damned moron front office would think Bradley was going to be any different than he was at Dodgers, Pods, Rangers, Indians, As, Cubs, etc.? League full of foolz.

Jason said...

I was at the Mariners game last night two rows behind the home dugout. When Milton came in from the strikeout preceding his benching, he had some choice words for the someone in the tunnel that I couldn't see. I'm assuming it was Cockrell, the hitting coach since Wakamatsu, the manager was visible standing on the steps off to the side. Of course, it could have been Milton's imaginary friend.

It is amusing for me to see an outfield of Bradley and Gutierrez, a.k.a. the path that led to Andre Ethier being a Dodger.

Kyle Baker said...

Thx for tht on the ground reporting, Jason! Good stuff.

Kyle Baker said...

Via DodgerTownUSA tweet:

"The Dodgers set the weekend rotation with Kuroda on Friday, Haeger on Saturday and Kershaw on Sunday vs. Rockies"

Jason said...

@Dusty - To their credit, the Mariners front office did get rid of Carlos Silva in the Bradley deal.

In the grand scheme of things, I'm of the opinion that if you have to be stuck with a crazy, unproductive malcontent, a hitter is better than a pitcher. A hitter can be kept in the clubhouse or on the bench with "glue" type guys feeding positive information and reinforcement throughout the game (that would be Griffy's job in Seattle and should be Ausmus' job in LA). The manager and coaching staff are right there to enforce the team concept and make sure the problem player doesn't get out of hand and maybe find timely situations to use the otherwise non-productive hitter. Pitchers that can't produce and must stay on the roster are essentially banished to the bullpen where there is a less obvious authority structure leading to a malcontent poisoning the vibe.

Neither situation is desirably by any means, but that ship has sailed.

NicJ said...

I was happy with Charlie's 4 innings of relief last night, if he could just pitch like that during his starts we would be fine.

Kyle Baker said...

Disagree re Bradley from simply a cost-benefit standpoint.

a) He wasn't free and therefore money could have been spent on someone else presumably as good or better
b) Can't count on him day in and day out
c) Amount of energy extended to keep him in line (as in your dugout/chemistry example) ultimately is greater than the benefit of having him
d) I'd rather my dugout be spending time on figuring out how to hit and win, not how to make sure Bradley doesn't slap a nun on the way out

There are probably more.

Dear Dodgers:

Please don't disappoint tonight. I have no other distractions (ie. Lakers) to keep me occupied.

Thank you,

Dear Neeebs:

If Bills melts down before the third inning, we will replay the Lakers game from last night on the big screen.

Sincerely,
Dodgers management

Kyle Baker said...

MLB Network just reported that Bradley has been excused from the team for a few days to deal with some "personal issues." See my "b)" above.

Jason said...

@Dusty - All fair points. Ideally the team would DFA the Bradley/Silva types and just move on. It's not like money is a problem with the team, they're owned by Nintendo which is making money hand over fist in their primary business and have always taken a very hands-off approach to how the front office wants to do things (apart from naming Howard Lincoln CEO of the team which was as much a move to get him out of his executive role at Nintendo where he didn't have the best reputation, shades of Silva - Bradley perhaps?).

NicJ said...

Dusty, its funny you say that because everyone at the stadium was saying that they should have done that last night.

BTW, with all the new ads at the ballpark this year i have always wondered why they havent reached out to apple to sponsor Dodgervision. Ive always thought it just looks like a big iphone.

Kyle Baker said...

Maybe they should just let Bradley sit in the gameroom and play Nintendo all day in order to keep him out of trouble.

Kyle Baker said...

@Nic

The funny thing was that last night Dodger-centric Tweeters were blowing up the Twitter lines (lines? whatever) sending messages to official Dodgers Twitter feeds asking for the Lakers game to be put up on Dodgervision. Sad but funny.

NicJ said...

yeah i saw that DB, pretty funny stuff.

I remember the Dodgertownusa feed saying something like "well we may have given up 9 runs but we can still give out prizes!' yay!

Dusty, if you were asking what the difference was between the different baseball games, I replied in the other thread with:

They're just made by different companies. So they feel a little different, play a little different, that kinda thing. "The Show" is only available on Playstation, but historically it has been more highly rated than the 2k series.

I ask the chair permission to revise and extend my remarks.

Amateur night as ECdM may be it's also a great night to scam all sorts of free drinks and get tequila-related swag from the myriad of hooch-pushing booze conglomerate whores who are willing to ply patrons (not Patrons) with their wares.

I just got the lamest, piece of shit Hornitos trucker style hat in exchange for lapping up that tequila purveyor's swill, neither of which caused me to incur any cost.

Life es bueno.

I yield the balance of my time.

Josh S. said...

Good thing this is happening on a day when everybody gets drunk.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I can't wait to see what kind of prospects we get at the trade deadline.

karina said...

Do you think the Dodgers management regret they let go Lowe and Wolf?

Fred's Brim said...

there are teams from time to time that feast on fastball pitchers who don't pitch that fast. The Brewers have been that way for the last couple of years. The Mets were like that before they all got injured (Brad Penny was especially brutalized)

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Chad got jobbed on that one.

NicJ said...

i doubt it, they both get paid more than they are worth.

Betsy said...

Doesn't make me feel bad that i gave away my seats for tonight. aghh...don't take a page out of Sher's book

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Lowe's a much more complex situation.

He didn't want to resign.

Oh, I guess it wasn't that complex.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Why didn't we go after Jim Edmonds? He's a hell of a lot better than GA.

Fred's Brim said...

unacceptable in soooo many ways

NicJ said...

How does Honeycutt still have a job?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This is just absolutely beyond comprehension. I mean, I can't comprehend it.

Nostradamus said...

sax has a looong evening ahead of him.

NicJ said...

Hopefully Sax was in line getting his victory knot and he didnt see any of that.

Fred's Brim said...

only 26 pitches

karen said...

I can't believe we got out of this inning allowing only 4 runs

rbnlaw said...

Had to stop watching the game. Unlike a train wreck, I can't look.

Jason said...

Insult to injury: Reed Johnson leading off. Ugh.

rbnlaw said...

Honneycutt fire watch now commencing. He and that Butcher fella from Anaheim will be updating their resumes tonight.

Nostradamus said...

Well, I'll be dipped in shit, this is awful!

I don't think it's really Honey's fault, but something has to be done.

Fred's Brim said...

Doug Davis, Cliff Lee for a night

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Chad's officially on trade watch.

If Honey's fired, it's only to send the message that the Dodgers are trying to fix it. It wouldn't necessarily fix anything; it's just for keeping up appearances.

Fred's Brim said...

Raffy would have popped out after 2 pitches

rbnlaw said...

@MLASF
Completely agree. Can't fire Torre; can't fire Colletti; can't fire McCourt, although that would solve most of the problems. Honey's the only one left.

Trade Bills? Last year, we could've had Halliday. This year? Bucket of balls.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Chad's stock is low, but there are plenty of teams who think they can right his ship.

NicJ said...

why would they trade Bills now? his value is super low at the moment.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Nic See: above

Kyle Baker said...

Sweet mother of frigging shit. I'm hammered almost for free so am in appropriate way to endure this fucking tripe.

Are you optimists ready to admit defeat now?

Tequila tequila tequila.

NicJ said...

yeah, i dont see them shopping him. The other team would have way too much leverage. Might as well just DFA him.

If we keep losing its not really going to matter this year anyways.

Nostradamus said...

Well, can't fire Colletti until someone else takes the fall first, that is.

Nostradamus said...

A run!

NicJ said...

Maybe if we continue to play poorly McCourt wont want the team anymore.

A run, yay.

Fred's Brim said...

Matt Holliday would have taken that in the groonies

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

MOAR RUNZ

karina said...

@Dusty Baker i'll admit defeat when the out number 27 is completed.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Not a snowball's chance in hell they DFA Chad. And there are teams willing to trade for him. Dodgers would much rather get something for nothing.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

MOAR RUNZ AGEN

NicJ said...

I wasnt saying they should DFA him, i was saying that your not gonna get anything of value for him right now. NOthing thats going to help the team right now anyways. You are better off waiting, hope he turns it around and then you see what you can get.

Fred's Brim said...

oh gawd MLB.tv
you are making me reminiscent for the umpire school commercials of last year

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I nominate "Throw strikes, stupid!" as an official catchphrase at SoSG.

Fred's Brim said...

huh? what happened? did they score secret runs that inning?

NicJ said...

Good inning. see now they can try to trade him.

Fred's Brim said...

I bet if they traded him to the 2001 Braves, Leo Mazzone would turn him into a Cy Young winner. Then they'd trade him to the Yankees and he'd turn back into what we have now

Jason said...

Do we need an inning-by-inning tracker for Chad's trade value?

Pregame - Carlos Silva
1st - Game used chewing gum
2nd - Charlie Morton

Nostradamus said...
