Even as a cartoon Randy Johnson looks like a child molester.

Hey Dodger Fans!...

Listen, I've never done spring training before and would appreciate some guidance...

I'm looking to do 4 days, Mar 19-22 and don't know if we can picnic at games, where to stay, etc...

Help

Thanks,

Sanfrandodgerfan...

sanfrandodgerfan - You can find Camelback's stadium policies here.

In the website picture, it looks like there are people picnicing.

sanfrandodgerfan, if you're considering picnicking at Camelback Ranch, I suggest making turkey sandwiches with bacon and lettuce and a couple of thick slices of provolone cheese. Make sure to a pack an reusable ice pack which will keep your sandwich as well as your drinks cold and refreshing,

That's good advice, Sax. You forgot to mention the use of sunscreen, and not to go in the water right after one has eaten!

MLB Network....eases the pain.

Tonight, they featured 3 stories re: West Coast baseball that have shaped the sport's history. 1) Excellent retrospective on Campy including some pictures of his rehab after the accident and of course a lot of coverage of the famous fundraising exhibition game. 2) Drysdale's shutout innings streak as it paralleled RFK's California campaign and eventual assassination. One great anecdote was where Maury Wills by that time was playing for Pirates, who were the visiting team as Drysdale went for the record. Wills was on 1st and was always a sure bet to try to steal. Wills explained in an interview for the, though, that he lost competitiveness to try to ruin the streak, and he told Dodgers 1B Parker to let Drysdale know that he wasn't going to try to steal - he was standing down. I'd never heard that story, and it was very touching. 3) Roseboro incident broken down. I've seen most of it before, but it's still an interesting tale the way MLB Network weaves it.

Check it out if you get a chance.

Dusty, I wish I had seen these stories, especially 2 and 3. Give a shout out if you know of any Dodgers stuff in advance, please!

Will do, Sax. I actually just happened upon it, right when it started, and didn't know ahead of time. I'm sure they'll replay it. Like I said, there was some archival footage and photos that I'd never seen before (not that I'm any sort of uber-historian).

Cool, thanks DB. I'll bring the turkey bacon provolone sandwiches.

Kyle Baker said...

Wait, is that "turkey, bacon, and provolone," or is it "turkey bacon and provolone"? Cause I don't want any of that lame near bacon stuff.

Steve Sax said...

Actually, it's provolone that tastes like turkey bacon. I hope that's okay that it's just a cheese sandwich.

Thanks to all of the SSOG that have lent me an understanding of the 'Do's and Don'ts' of Spring training...

I gotta tell ya guys...I'm a former 'Sureno' myself so I'm pretty hip to the sunscreen thing...)

Should I figure out some way to meet you guys if there when I am so I can pass the Turkey n Provolone sandwiches around to all?...

Again, Thanks very much...
