A McFlurry of Roster Moves

From Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times:

Infielder Tony Abreu is expected to be called up today from triple-A Albuquerque and right-hander Ronald Belisario threw a scoreless inning for Class-A Inland Empire in what Manager Joe Torre said would probably be the last game of his minor league rehabilitation assignment.

Eric Stults was pulled from his start in Albuquerque on Thursday night after only three innings, a sign that he could be promoted to replace Jason Schmidt as the Dodgers' starter in San Francisco on Monday. Stults, who was in the rotation until a sprained thumb landed him on the disabled list on May 31, bumped fists with teammates and waved at Albuquerque Manager Tim Wallach as he exited the game.

And a look at what other teams are doing, from my one-stop shop for transaction fodder, MLB Trade Rumors:

What do you think? Will the Dodgers be working the waiver wire, or will they go with internal options?

I wouldn't be overly shocked if they picked up Giambi, but he is on the DL. And there's enough PED talk around these parts as it is.

Orel said...

He would be like our very own Matt Stairs.

Loney Fan said...

I hate Giambi.

How come we let Tomko slip through our fingers again?! He could have been the Schmidt replacement we so badly need!

I like the new Reeses McFlurry.

Kyle Baker said...

Replacing Schmidt with Tomko would be like replacing Schmidt with himself.

Loney Fan said...

I'll let Tomko back on the team for one week with his wife.

Kyle Baker said...

@Loney Fan

Push for 2 1/2 wks. That would be an even trade.

Orel said...

You drive a tough bargain.

Giambi was terrible this year. But it would be nice to have a power threat off the bench.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

According the MLBTR, somebody claimed Alex Rios from the Jays.

Josh S. said...

Rays pick up RJ Swindle after the Brewers DFA'd him. Look out AL East! You can't handle the soap bubble!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

While Giambi stunk it up this season, his OBP and slugging are pretty good considering his crappy average.

Josh S. said...

Rios is a right fielder owed $60 mil. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the Dodgers who claimed him. Though you never know with Neddy.

Wesley Vento said...

Remember when Alex Rios was a top MLB outfielder? Yeah, me neither.

Yawn.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

It's interesting to see who feels Rios is a worthwhile investment.

Wesley Vento said...

The only team I can think of that needs a bat would be the Giants. Even though I just threw Rios under the bus, that would suck.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

In other news, Braves fans have labeled Andre Ethier "The Terminator".

Josh S. said...

The Terminator? That could work. I like Andre the Giant, except for the whole "the Giant" part.

Wesley Vento said...

I just call him Dream Boat

Josh S. said...

NOOOOOOO!!!! GOD! NOOOOOO!!!!

Orel said...

Hey! They're Dodger fans! Or so the Dodgers tell us!

Josh S. said...

With Smoltz DFA'd, Schmidt's gotta be next, right?

I still want to know what the Super Secret Team Meeting was about. (I'm nosy like that.)

Wesley Vento said...

@ Josh,

Maybe Torre had 4 back stage passes for Nickleback and held the meeting to see who wanted to go...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The Smoltz DFA was obvious. Even he knew it after getting pulled from yesterday's game.

Kyle Baker said...

Red Sox were a day late in DFA'ing Smoltzy. They should have done it before the Yanks game, then just used a batting tee for 7 innings before sending in a reliever; it would have been much more effective against the Yanks than Smoltz was.

Schmidt and Smoltz should take a nice Caribbean cruise together and reflect on their careers over a shared pina colada.

OK, he's a (sort of) admitted PED user and he rocks the pornstache every so often, but I like the idea of picking up Giambi as a late inning threat from the left side. It's either us, or the Gnats will pick him up.

In other news: Glad to hear Schitty won't be making the start on Monday. I'll be up in the municipality by the water for the game Monday night. Will send reports once I sober up enough.

Loney Fan said...

Why Giambi? Why would you want to taint this season with Giambi? We already went through Manny. Giambi is an ass. He is only going to detract from the team mentality we have going in the clubhouse. No former Yankees. That should be a rule.

Ken said...

I think everyone on the team needs a nickname.

I'm glad Stults is back. Every time I try typing his name, I accidentally type Sluts

Ken said...

Why not pick up Smoltz and see if he can do decently in the NL?

JuanLove said...

Elbert and JMac down, Abreu, Beli up. Schmidt DL, Stults in.

NicJ said...

What about Bonds?

Just make him stay away from the rest of the team. I would like to see that happen just for the fact of what it would do to giants fans.

NicJ said...

What is the over/under on how longnit takes for Abreu to roll an ankle?

I thought he didn't exist?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That's what Ken Levine keeps saying. I don't know how he will handle this.

Kyle Baker said...

@rbnlaw

"Will send reports once I sober up enough."

Looking forward to the reports in around 3 weeks! ;-)

Kyle Baker said...

JuanLove: "Beli up."

Pun intended?

I saw the 66ers game last night w/ Belisario starting. He wasn't impressive but who knows what they were looking for out of him.

also at the game, Scott Van Slyke hit a nice home run and Preston Mattingly was swinging at anything, including one pitch that bounced on the grass.
