Hey, Let's Spend The Evening Scoreboard Watching (August 27)

Yusmeiro Petit (2-8, 6.06) vs. Joe Martinez (3-1, 5.73).

This game just started in San Francisco, who hosts the Diamondbacks. The Giants are 6.5 games behind the Dodgers, but only two and a half games out of the Wild Card. A win tonight by SF would further intensify the weekend Rockies @ Giants series!

Looking good so far, SF!

Good god, another game thread! I think I've had a gameday+sosg browser open on at least 1 device for the last 36 hours.

Hey, it's the stretch run, Mr C. We can't let up.

Phiwwies lost to Pirates. Our record in NL looking solid.

Yall able to watch the game or just follow the scoreboard?

Freddie Lewis in LF just missed the ball he was trying to field. He couldn't see it but it made him look like he was just sucky. I'm going to act like I don't know he couldn't pick the ball up through the lights and think he just sucks.

This is why I have mad Torre love (from Dodgers website):

""We just need to enhance our record," he said. "Our high-water mark was 27 games over .500. We came in here 23 games over and now we're 24 games over. You just hope to keep going in that direction."

He said the fact that the Dodgers' lead had withered from 9 1/2 games to two games after Tuesday night's loss had more to do with the Rockies' being red-hot than the Dodgers collapsing.

"We haven't been God-awful. Those guys have played their tail off," he said.

He's such an incredible manager, not just managing the game, but managing the SEASON, the PLAYERS, the MEDIA...you da man, Joe!

Mrs. Torre, I had no idea your pseudonym would be Duaty Baker.

In all seriousness, I like Torre and I'm glad he's our guy. He did great today, as well.

Trying to send some positivity to balance out my anti-Furcal leanings these days.

Kyle Baker said...

Snakes just broke it open 8-0.

Steve Sax said...

Hmm. Maybe I'll turn on KNBR and listen to Jon Miller, then.

To the good people running this site:

Are you aware that the SoSG Google search in the sidebar isn't working? I've tried it several times lately and it doesn't work. And god knows the search I'm trying is of huge import to the future of all humanity as we know it.

Kyle Baker said...

In all honesty, I really like Jon Miller's voice. It's a great broadcasting voice. It's just what he's saying I have some issues with.

Steve Sax said...

I kid you not, Jon Miller is talking about the Blie Diamond Almonds corporate wonks he met tonight at the game.

Man, we are lucky to have Vin Scully.

Steve Sax said...

@DB, I can't stand Jon Miller's insistence on pronouncing every Latin-named player his own special way. Enough!

Kyle Baker said...

9-0 to the Snakes and they're still threatening. Hey, AZ, take it easy on the Gnats. We need them to beat up a little bit on Rox this weekend.

Kyle Baker said...

I have the Gnats game on the computer screen, but volume down. Also watching Top Chef (for the cooking ideas, not to stare at Padma Lakshi).

@sax

Miller isn't usually as far off with player names as Steiner can be, but somehow it bothers me more.

Also, I now associate him w/ Morgan & Phillips.

I need to bid my final adieu. Great posting, great commenting tonight

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

@Mr. C - In what world is Miller more accurate than Steiner? I've never heard the latter say "Forkal" or "Troncaso".

Kyle Baker said...

Did we ever hear back from Josh re his birthing? I know he caught the end of the game.

Kyle Baker said...

Today Steiner could not for the life of him drop the phamtom first "n" in Vicente Padilla's name.

Nostradamus said...

@db

I call bullshit.

Padma Lakshmi demands to be stared at.

I'm currently watching the demise of the giants on gameday, listening to the Police, and reading "the gulag archipelago"

When that gets too soul-crushing, I'm posting here.

That happens a lot.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I couldn't listen to today's game. I will always connect Miller to mispronounciation, no matter what. Plus I hate him.

Kyle Baker said...

Don't get me wrong...I detest Jon Miller more than just about any other announcer. Except for his partner Joe Morgan.

Kyle Baker said...

re: _the gulag archipelago_

watching gnats has a lot in common with forced labor.

Nostradamus said...

@mlasf

In-cahr-nahr-ciown?

I think steiner is just more mush-mouthy overall, so it doesn't stick out so badly.

Kyle Baker said...

Jon Heyman just sent a Tweet saying he thinks Bad Penny is a good fit at Gnats. Blech on all accounts.

Nostradamus said...

@db

"Watching gnats has a lot in common with forced labor"

Not if their getting their collective faces re-arrnged.

Kyle Baker said...

True, true.

Nostradamus said...

*arranged

Steve Sax said...

Let the Giants take Penny! They are already used to "robust"-sized players!

Kyle Baker said...

Not only would Gnats have to take on salary, they'd have to take on more hay and oats.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

They would also need to protect their 3B coach from verbal provacation.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

*provocation

@sax

The could polish the clubhouse spread and still have to organize a Viking raid across the bay to plunder the A's.

Steve Sax said...

As if there was anything the A's had that was worth plundering. Empty stadium seats? Tasered fans? Nomar Garciaparra?

Kyle Baker said...

Interesting little piece today in the Wall Street Journal re pitchers pitching over 100 MPH. Subscription site so if you want a copy hit me up.

Kyle Baker said...

11-0 Snakes.

Steve Sax said...

11-0 Snakes, btw. And this was from starting against a 2-8 pitcher!

Steve Sax said...

@DB, I missed it today. What's the gist of the article?

Kyle Baker said...

"Through Wednesday, 382 pitches had been thrown at 100 mph or more—faster than any year since at least 2002."

Steve Sax said...

@DB: everybody is juicing!

I have to say, my ability to utilize my red stapler is up 16% since i started using the cream and clear

My ability to have 23 Firefox tabs open and switch between is up an astonishing 32% year over year.
