Game 60 Thread: June 9 vs. Padres, 7p

MANNYWATCH: 20 GAMES
PADRES' OPPONENT RECORD WITHOUT MANNY: 18-12

Chad Billingsley (7-3, 2.59) vs. Chris Young (4-4, 4.46).

COMMENTS: Magic or Padres? Padres or Magic? Fans of Orlando and San Diego sports teams are going to have a difficult time deciding what to watch tonight. The unpredictable Padres are coming off a four-game split with the Diamondbacks, while the Magic are involved in some sort of roundball-related fisticuffs with the hoops outfit originally hailing from Minneapolis.

Seven of the first ten draft picks are pitchers.

Orel said...

Tim Floyd resigns

NicJ said...

The dbacks just took aj pollock OF from notre dame with the pick they got from the o dog deal.

NicJ said...

There are probably several USC basketball players wondering if it's too late to declare eligability for the draft.

Orel said...

"Pollock is one of the better college hitters available in this Draft class, with a great approach and the ability to make consistent contact. He won't hit for a ton of power, but has some extra-base ability. His above-average speed helps him on offense and in the field, though he is still learning to play the outfield. He's the type who makes everything look effortless and with his hitting ability, could be the kind of college bat that moves quickly through the Minors."

karina said...

Very young Upton brothers wearing Dodgers gear (a promo during the MLB broadcast of the draft)

karina said...

I really like the White Sox pick on this draft.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

They're only at #28. The Dodger game will have started by the time they get to the Dodgers' pick.

karina said...

Liked the #28 pick too. The Red Sox picked a high school outfielder who can bunt and is fast.

NicJ said...

Selig has terrible posture.

karina said...

Pick #32, the Dodgers are close.

karina said...

Compensation picks round will start in 15 minutes.

Unknown said...

Including the first round and the supplemental picks, the Angels have 5 total picks. Wow.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That's what happens when Mark Teixeira, Jon Garland, and K-Rod don't resign.

karina said...

Just one catcher in the draft which i find very interesting. However, reading his scouting report, in his weakness traits is listed: "Some may ask how a Miami-area catcher got out of Florida

what does it mean?

Orel said...

We're on the clock!

karina said...

The Dodgers select: Aaron Miller, LHP

Steve Sax said...

SoSG Sax will be at the game tonight!

NicJ said...

See you in Five years miller, maybe.

karina said...

Have fun, Sax!

Aaron Miller is also an outfielder, possibly he'll be one in the professional level.

Orel said...

"A two-way player at Baylor, it seems likely that Miller's future lies in the outfield. He's got a great swing from the left side, with excellent pitch recognition -- his main problem is he's too selective at times -- and he should hit for some power at the next level. He's a decent runner and has a strong arm, making it easy to see him patrolling right field in a big league ballpark one day. In a Draft class lacking impact college bats, Miller shouldn't have any problem generating interest."

NicJ said...

it says that he is a OF, orel. am i looking at the wrong guy?

karina said...

For somewhat reason, Miller makes me remember about King James.

Orel said...

Lakers up 8-2 with 9:00 left.

Orel said...

"Also a pitcher, Miller has a right fielder's arm."

NicJ said...

thanks, orel

Steve Sax said...

I just drove by an electric billboard with the updated Lakers score (8-6). Wow.

NicJ said...

bynums looking pretty good early.

NicJ said...

i think the magic will take this one.

Orel said...

Magic up 1.

Were. Kobe sinks one.

Orel said...

Baseball Analysts, on Aaron Miller:

"AARON MILLER, LHP/OF, BAYLOR

Baylor was supposed to have one of college baseball’s best rotations, and instead it has been the biggest disappointment. Kendal Volz, a projected early first-rounder when the season opened, has seen his stuff regress. A pair of possible second-rounders, Shawn Tolleson (elbow issues) and Craig Fritsch (command woes and a lack of mental toughness), fared even worse, and the trio combined for just eight wins this season. Though he faded down the stretch, Miller was the Bears’ best pitcher for much of the spring and pitched himself into the top two rounds in the process. Though he hadn’t pitched regularly since high school, Miller repeatedly showed a 91-94 mph fastball and a nasty 82-83 mph slider. His command is spotty, but the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder has the athleticism to improve with more experience. Miller first emerged as a top pitching prospect when he threw 90-91 mph as a high school sophomore, but by his senior year he was more highly regarded as a right fielder in the mold of Paul O’Neill. Miller didn’t want to pitch as a freshman for Baylor and made just six mound appearances in 2008. He still started in right field for the Bears when he wasn’t pitching, and hit .310 while rankings second on the club with 12 homers and 47 RBIs. But it’s clear now that his future will be on the mound."

Orel said...

Keith Law, on Miller:

"Miller wasn’t on many radar screens coming into the spring because he was behind bigger names on the Baylor pitching staff and because surgery on his nonthrowing shoulder cut his Cape Cod League season short in 2008. He’s a two-pitch reliever who was pressed into starting duty when Baylor’s vaunted starting staff of Kendal Volz, Shawn Tolleson and Craig Fritsch fell down and went boom. Miller’s fastball is solid-to-average at 88-92 mph with hard, boring action in toward right-handed hitters, and he has a sharp, long-breaking slider with pretty good tilt at 81-83 mph that looks as though it should wipe out left-handed hitters. He drifts off the rubber early but otherwise has a clean delivery, and his arm action isn’t too long. He doesn’t have great physical projection and may not have the velocity to work as a starter in pro ball. But as a two-pitch reliever with a good breaking ball, he’s a good third-round value."

NicJ said...

so there taking him as a pitcher right? this isnt a james loney situation.

NicJ said...

i think this is the longest bynum has played a first Q all post season.

NicJ said...

i think its about time to start guarding Alston.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I'd call this a good beginning since they're on the road.

Orel said...

Lakers and Magic trading punches.

Orel said...

Penguins 1, Red Wings 0, 2nd period

NicJ said...

gasol in a bit of foul trouble.

NicJ said...

OH SHIT KOBE!!!!

Orel said...

Kobe says block this! Chance for a four-point play.

NicJ said...

mbenga sighting!

Orel said...

Turk to My Lou travels.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

A little strong on the last one, but an otherwise good first quarter.

PenosCabell said...

I hate when Vujacic, Walton and Farmar are on the floor together

Orel said...

Walton & Farmer contributing!

PenosCabell said...

I just saw todays lineup. Kemp 8th again?

NicJ said...

the bench is looking good tonight.

NicJ said...

crap, cant let howard dunk the ball like that.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

If the defense could pick up, the Lakers would be winning big.

NicJ said...

the magic are shooting 76% and down! Wow, thats gotta be a good sign, that percentage cant stay that high all night.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

People can't say all the calls go the Lakers' way after this game.

Orel said...

Dodgers' second pick: Garrett Gould, RHP (Maize High School, KS)

NicJ said...

can the magic stay this hot all game?

NicJ said...

the Goulden Child?

NicJ said...

man, they are calling this game pretty weird.

karina said...

Orel, you rock at transcribing from the TV

karina said...

That Gould kid is very athletic, he just got around from high school and already stands at 6'4. However, the scouting report say he has some problems with his mechanics and delivery, he could be injury prone.

Orel said...

Thanks, Karina! But those are cut-and-pastes from True Blue LA.

NicJ said...

the lakers have to start defending the three

NicJ said...

what a defensive battle.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This defense has become awful all of a sudden.

karina said...

I thought about you guys this morning, watching SportsCenter. They were running a story about the Lakers and the Dodgers, saying there's a great chance LA will be home for the baseball and basketball champions (last time was 1988!). They interviewed some latin fans and they spoke with such enthusiasm about both teams, i couldn't help to think on this crew.

I guess i have a problem, everytime i hear someone saying the Dodgers are World Series contenders, i get giddy.

Orel said...

Consecutive singles for the Padres.

Orel said...

Martin nails Gwynn trying to steal third.

NicJ said...

down five at the half with the magic shooting 70%+. All that on the road, i would say that aint bad.

PS WTF happened to bills.

Orel said...

"I guess i have a problem, everytime i hear someone saying the Dodgers are World Series contenders, i get giddy."

Me too! But I quickly switch back to cynical thoughts.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

If the defense can show up in the secondhalf, the Lakers have a pretty good chance of winning.

NicJ said...

the lakers are usually good for at least a quarter of solid defense.

Orel said...

WP advances runners to 2nd & 3rd, 1 out.

NicJ said...

just put him on.

Orel said...

Bills K's Gonzalez!

karina said...

MLB Gameday is not working for me at all.

NicJ said...

or do that.

Unknown said...

That was a clutch K.

NicJ said...

here comes kosmonaut

NicJ said...

crap

Unknown said...

Martin is absolutely dominating the running game this year. Other than the Philly game, he is over 40%

Orel said...

Kouz bloop. 2-0 Padres. Wonderful.

NicJ said...

well, lets hope that rest day has helped the bats.

NicJ said...

whats up with bills?

Orel said...

That WP hurt.

Unknown said...

Damn Bills. I hope you got this out of your system.

That wasn't a bad pitch, it was 94 and on this inside corner. Eisenreichmonof just fought it off.

koufax said...

did not expect to see this as i tune in a little late

Orel said...

That was a gift strike three.

Unknown said...

Well thank goodness that ended.

Unknown said...

Orel - It was borderline.

Orel said...

Bills with 25 pitches in the first.

NicJ said...

could of been worse. lets get it back.

Unknown said...

BTW, why the hell is Matt Kemp batting behind Furcal? The only justification I can see is Torre doing the double cleanup thing with him, since Martin almost certainly is on base at least once in this game. Still, Kemp should be hitting third, not 8th.

NicJ said...

not a great way to start it off.

Unknown said...

Wow. Young has nothing on his heater tonight, though it is dancing. The Dodgers really need to just hold back and wait to wail on something.

Orel said...

Andre gets one back!

NicJ said...

another solo shot, ill take it.

Orel said...

Now let's try that with men on base!

Unknown said...

Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na

koufax said...

i read manny's statement today. after not speaking for 3 weeks the best he could come up with was the mcguire defense? i mean it makes sense i guess, considering that worked so while for big mac...

karina said...

Ethier lighting it up!

Orel said...

100!

NicJ said...

andre the giant single-handedly cut the lead in half

Unknown said...

Young got jobbed on that first pitch. Seems like the ump has a high K zone.

karina said...

Dodgers pick Brett Wallach, RHP

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Ethier is slowly returning to form.

Unknown said...

Brett any relation to Tim?

Unknown said...

MLSF - Slowly? He has a 1.342 OPS in the last 9 days.

karina said...

I don't know, Alireza. I do know a Carlos Beltran's cousin was drafted.

karina said...

This Wallach kid is from california, maybe he's related to Tim Wallach.

Unknown said...

10 pitch inning is a good thing.

Orel said...

Lakers within 3.

Unknown said...

I really wonder if Young is healthy. His velocity is down significantly.

Orel said...

Tony Gwynn's son is so...slim.

NicJ said...

cant let the magic get energy plays like that.

Unknown said...

I would love to see Russ tee one up here to get off the schneid. That, or rip apart the Rangers in Arlington later this week.

Orel said...

Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 Friday1

Unknown said...

Orel - Tony was much slimmer when he was younger.

NicJ said...

kobe struggling from the line, thats gonna kill us.

Orel said...

SF 2, ARI 4, top 4

Unknown said...

Question - Does Raffy steal 2B and 3B?

NicJ said...

man, these calls are out of wack, letting contact go on one end, ticky tacks on the other.

Orel said...

Kobe called for his third on a ticky-tack elbow.

Unknown said...

Nic - The refs always call the Lakers tight. BTW, weird that Lamar only has one board.

Orel said...

Kemp ties it up! Nice to respond so early!

NicJ said...

orlando still at 71% damn.

Orel said...

And we get Bills out of the way.

Unknown said...

Well. Raffy answered my question. 2B and 3B on one play. Young is so bad at holding runners that he can't even pull off a pitchout.

Orel said...

How crushing would it be if the Lakers could win despite the Magic's hot shooting.

Unknown said...

Damn Matt, that might have been outside Vladimir Guerrero's strike zone.

Orel said...

How many titles do the Celtics have?

NicJ said...

if the magic lose tonight, its probably a sweep, at the very least it wouldnt come back to LA

Unknown said...

Is Trevor getting throws? I am not at home to see it.

NicJ said...

17

karina said...

Does someone remember a game, last season, where the Dodgers stole 5 or 6 bases off Young? i think Pierre stole 3 bases or something like that.

Unknown said...

Orel - 17

Orel said...

Magic by 5.

Orel said...

Odom's cold.

NicJ said...

i think its gonna be really hard for the magic to lose this one.

Unknown said...

Karina - The Rockies stole 8 off Young, including 5 by Dexter Fowler.

NicJ said...

i was wondering when he would revert to bad lamar.

Unknown said...

Odom is playing like crap. That isn't good for the Lakers.

NicJ said...

man that was all ball.

Unknown said...

Line drive to left-center by Tony Gwynn.

Yep, sounds pretty familiar.

NicJ said...

man, kobe is fake everyone into fouling the jumper.

NicJ said...

the magic are starting to pull away

Unknown said...

Seriously, what is the deal with Bills?

NicJ said...

odom has 4 fouls

Orel said...

Lakers only down 4.

NicJ said...

is he hurt? thats the last thing we need.

NicJ said...

at least the magic seem to be cooling down a bit.

NicJ said...

another chance for gonzo with two runners on.

Orel said...

Phew. Gonzalez almost put the Padres up by two again.

Orel said...

You don't run on Beast Mode!

Orel said...

Magic heating up again. Up by 8.

NicJ said...

magic up by 8

NicJ said...

im already anticipating the lakers getting reamed by pundits for the magics high shooting percentage.

NicJ said...

smart play by farmar, gets the weak foul to go to the line.

Orel said...

Game still looks very stealable for the Lakers.

NicJ said...

the lakers are fighting tonight

NicJ said...

lead back to 6

NicJ said...

its gonna be a close game, but its still the magic's game to lose.

Orel said...

Lakers down by 6 going into the fourth.

Are you kidding? Another Ethier HR?

Unknown said...

ok. I think Andre Ethier's slump is over.

Unknown said...

Loney damn near clocked that one out.

NicJ said...

if only we could get some guys on base in front of him.

Unknown said...

Nic - Martin and Pierre should be 1 and 2 right now.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

This Laker game is really frustrating me.

NicJ said...

MLSF- im just glad they are still in it, the magic should be blowing them out right now.

Orel said...

Well, the break didn't cool the Magic off any.

Orel said...

Turkoglu laughs at the Lakers' double-team.

Orel said...

Lamar is heating up.

NicJ said...

lakers still hanging in there.

Steve Sax said...

J steve, are you here at the game?

NicJ said...

although the lakers are going to have to get some stops if they want to win.

Orel said...

Is it the defense? The Magic look unstoppable. The Lakers just need to be unstoppabler.

Orel said...

Did Hundley really try to steal third?

Orel said...

Magic pulling away.

NicJ said...

why is Kobe still out? they are keeping it close but come on.

NicJ said...

hey we finally got an out of bounds call.

Orel said...

And it was wrong!

Fred's Brim said...

Russ picked off somehow after an infield single - not so sure about that call

Orel said...

Lakers only down by 5 with 6:17 left!

NicJ said...

figures, the only one that doesnt actually belong to us, we get.

Fred's Brim said...

Orel, Hundley thought about going to third after a ball got away from Russ. He stopped and Russ threw behind him and they nailed him after he finally decided to go to third

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

The Lakers down by 5. I'm sure they're alive, but why?

Orel said...

Thanks, FB.

Orel said...

Move over Rover, let Kobe take over.

Fred's Brim said...

don't walk the pitcher please

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Finally, a moving-screen call.

Fred's Brim said...

i said 'please'!

Orel said...

Lakers within 3.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Down to three

Fred's Brim said...

stupid Lakers - gotta rebound that ball

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

And Dwight goes to the line.

Orel said...

Maybe Bills couldn't hit Young's tiny strike zone.

Fred's Brim said...

i didnt mean stupid, Lakers fans. i was just mad at that play

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Fish with the three!

Orel said...

within 2

NicJ said...

fish with the big 3

Fred's Brim said...

Young's bat was covering that tiny zone well

Fred's Brim said...

dammit Bills - throw strikes. let these bums make the outs for you
