Game 17 Thread: April 24 @ Nats, 10a

Clayton Kershaw (1-0, 3.18) vs. Craig Stammen (1-0, 8.16).

Gameday

COMMENTS: Well, I couldn't have been more wrong about yesterday's game. So I'm just going to play it safe today and hope Clayton Kershaw throws a solid game against Craig "Cy Young" Stammen.

Oh, and we're tied for last place in the division. First place? The Padres. Here, have some Banana Runts:

This morning GT is difficult to manage. Orel and I are still sobering up from last night's messes (the game, and the after-game drinking).

Steve Sax said...

Dusty, are you at this game? Or tomorrow's?

Steve Sax said...

I'm going to talk to myself here for a while.

Dusty Baker said...

I am here in LA, alas.

Steve Sax said...

It's cold this morning.

Steve Sax said...

Dusty! Good morning!

Are you done with th sports page?

Nicholas said...

I am excited to see X Paul again. He is going to be great!

Dusty Baker said...

I skipped the sports page because a) it wouldn't have anything in it and b) I'm too much of a poor sport to read about our loss. Went right to the WSJ weekend edition.

Dusty Baker said...

Meanwhile, here are your Washington Nationals:

Morgan CF
Desmond SS
Guzman 2B
Dunn 1B
Willingham LF
Maxwell RF
Nieves C
Gonzalez 3B
Stammen P

Dusty Baker said...

@Sax

I like how you said "sports page" singular. That pretty much sums it up.

Small Sample Size said...

What are the chances CK goes 7+ for the second game in a row? And I guarantee the Sports Page is better where you are than where I am!

Dusty Baker said...

SSS-

What are you reading, the Log Cabin Democrat?

Small Sample Size said...

Arkansas Democrat Gazette. I only read the Log Cabon for the arrests! I don't need any Mayflower Eagle track and field updates! LOL

Dusty Baker said...

I haven't lived in Conway in almost 20 years, but I still religiously read the arrest section from the LCD.

Won't touch the Dem-Gaz, though. Still wounded over the Gazette's demise (yes, I hold onto things).

Nicholas said...

On a different thought, why don't the Dodgers move CBlake to second base and let DeWitt play third.

Small Sample Size said...

I read the Dem Gaz for the Razorback updates. Read about the baseball team today. Won't go near Wally Hall.

Fred's Brim said...

we are all but assured of a win today. I will be out walking in the woods, hoping to get enough reception to receive espn update texts. I won't be able to enjoy our 5-0 win, with Clayton going 8 strong, our good defense and situational hitting

Dusty Baker said...

Because DeWitt can play 2nd better than Blake could.

Dusty Baker said...

Hell yeah how 'bout them Diamond Hogs?

Dusty Baker said...

That midget hack Wally Hall is still around? Blech. He's like a tiny Bill Plaschke, if there could ever be such a thing.

Small Sample Size said...

Another question might be why not play Belliard at 2nd and not play DeWitt. I like Blake DePatience, but Belliard has been in a groove so far. Might want to consider taking DeWitt and his 1 XBH out of the lineup for a couple of days.

Dusty Baker said...

I'd agree w that, SSS. Esp since Belly II is playing against his old team, and folks usuallly do well in that setup. Have DeWitt off the bench and as a pinch runner for this series.

Small Sample Size said...

Saying "I hate someone" is not polite. With that said, I fuckin hate Wally Hall. He is now the Sports Editor and hosts a 4-7 p.m. radio show.

Dusty Baker said...

The only thing worse than having to read W Hall is having to listen to him. My dad still calls me from AR and complains about Hall.

Mr. Customer said...

Sweet, no matter what else happens today, I've got my banan...

*breaks tooth*

DAMMIT!

Dusty Baker said...

What is that toe fungus label on the box o Runts?

Small Sample Size said...

Nice!!!! Mr Customer

Dusty Baker said...

GameDay has this lineup posted:

Furcal
Martin
Ethier
Kemp
Loney
Blake
Paul
DeWitt
Kershaw

Dusty Baker said...

Per D Hernandez, "Manny has returned to Los Angeles."

Manny lives about 2 blocks north of me. This means right now he's just up the street, eating cereal and watching cartoons.

Mr. Customer said...

@SSS

The least I can do is entertain

@Dusty

I was wondering that. Doesn't look 'shopped. Could be a novelty label? Pretty disgusting though.

Small Sample Size said...

You think he watches Go Diego Go and Dora the Explorer for the Spanish speaking content?

Dusty Baker said...

Manny strikes me as a Powerpuff Girls man.

Josh S. said...

"What is that toe fungus label on the box o Runts?"

Because that's what banana Runts taste like!

Small Sample Size said...

Not a big banana runts guy either. No way Manny likes the Powerpuff Girls! Way to much action for his laid back personality. Is there a person on a cartoon with less street cred than the dude that hosts Yo Gabba Gabba?

Dusty Baker said...

Caffeinated and ready to go. Who made the Bloodys today?

Dusty Baker said...

RB - wow...Van Persie is back.

cc Mr C

Small Sample Size said...

Did RVP start today? He has played a couple of matches off the bench, but hasn't started.

Paul said...

Cool I am in the lineup!

Hold the plane and I hope my agent put the provision in my contract that I can take a whiskey out in the outfield with me to ease the pain of watching all the fly balls soar over me once the bullpen is called.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I hate banana.

Mr. Customer said...

@Dusty

I'm sure the Dutch are thrilled to have their Frisian stallion back in the stable for the cup.

Paul said...

Here is to you Mr. Blow a lead and ruin three hours of my life bullpen guy.

No bloodys this morning. Gonna get caffined up. Going to run 6 miles in a bit and need to save up for some killer vanilla bean rum cocktails later and cheering for the Giants demise.

Mr. Customer said...

Re: banana

I am more of a freak than even I knew, apparently.

Dusty Baker said...

Yes, RVP started today. Only ten minutes into his match right now v Man City.

Dusty Baker said...

Perusing the Dodgers website news section...here are the top 5 headlnes:

* • Manny returns to Los Angeles for treatment
* • Dodgers held in check in loss to Nationals
* • Manny placed on 15-day DL
* • Dodgers move forward without Manny
* • Haeger getting comfortable with Ellis

*rips out own eyes*

Josh S. said...

DJ Lance Rock has mad street cred. He played Coachella.

Paul said...

All this herbaceous plant talk would have fit very well with the monkey puns.

Josh S. said...

"Dodgers move forward without Manny"

They're reprinting last year's headlines?

Dusty Baker said...

You damn kids and your yeah-yeah music...who is DJ Lance Rock?

Paul said...

Get ready for "Manny works out" and "Dodgers await Manny's return".

Dusty Baker said...

Dodgers website has a recommendation for All Star votes:

http://yfrog.com/jxap8tj

Riiiiiiiiiiight....

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

I wonder how outraged Plaschke will be when Manny makes a rehab start.

Dusty Baker said...

Manny works out at the [redacted] gym about a block and a half from my house. If I worked out, I could go there and work out with him or do some recon on his recovery.

If I worked out.

Dusty Baker said...

NOBODY at the game today.

karen said...

Dodgers need to score early with possible rain.

Dusty Baker said...

We shld be able to get the game in today but tomorrow doesn't loko good. Also doesn't look good that I have to fly into DC tomorrow during some storms.

Paul said...

They have to blame this sloppy start on something.

Dusty Baker said...

Ethier kinda looks like his bobble prototype today.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

At least Stammen's making a lot of pitches.

Dusty Baker said...

Come on, Kid K!

Dusty Baker said...

Rockin' and firin'.

Josh S. said...

Dodgers apologize for Eric Collins and Steve Lyons.

Josh S. said...

Gold Glove?

Dusty Baker said...

I'd like to retract my previous comment.

Dusty Baker said...

Seriously, did Kemp forget how to catch over the winter? Or to judge depth? Did he go with his 2008 contacts?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Ugh.

karen said...

Deja Vu all over again

Josh S. said...

"Big Donkey"?

Dusty Baker said...

Nice find from LFP, Josh.

Dusty Baker said...

W.H.E.W.

Josh S. said...

You're forgiven, Matty.

Mr. Customer said...

I can deal with one run.

Let's hope the blue can deal a few more than one today.

Dusty Baker said...

Arsenal 0-0 Man City at the half.

This one is a shitfest.

Dusty Baker said...

JLo was freed 500 hits ago.

Dusty Baker said...

Mrs. Dusty just proclaimed that Blake's chin is big and weird, thus he needs to re-grow the beard. She has much better commentary that Collins.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

CHINFACE!!!

Mr. Customer said...

Nice. Pile them on.

Dusty Baker said...

To spite Mrs. Dusty, Chinface sends one out of the Yard.

Josh S. said...

Aw, I missed the homer.

Rewind buttons are a beautiful thing.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Is there a first-base ump that can actually give us a call?

Dusty Baker said...

@Josh

Is your picture choppy?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Damn balk.

Dusty Baker said...

Balk.

Dusty Baker said...

Torre just arguing to buck up Kershaw. To me it was a clear balk. You can't start throwing and then decide part-way through whether you're going to throw to home or first.

karen said...

Sooo many walks this season

Josh S. said...

Nope. Not choppy, but Glendale still doesn't have PTHD.

Dusty Baker said...

Choppiness seems to have worked itself out.

Did you go with ATT uVerse yet?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

If Kershaw walks the pitcher, I'm gonna get really pissed.

Dusty Baker said...

W.H.E.W.

Josh S. said...

The dictionary definition of whew.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

That was a ball.

Dusty Baker said...

The dictionary definition of a ball.

Josh S. said...

The dictionary definition of the word spastic.

Dusty Baker said...

Quit showing us that Dunn HR. Kids may be watching.

Josh S. said...

The shift ALWAYS backfired on us.

Josh S. said...

backfireS

Steve Sax said...

2-1 on a Beard hr with FJL on base. That's promising!

Dusty Baker said...

@Josh

You should have never started something that you couldn't finish

'cause writin' rhymes to me is like popeye to spinach

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

This can't end well.

Dusty Baker said...

Kershaw is having Bills' 3rd inning meltdown.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Kershaw's pissed.

Dusty Baker said...

@Sax

That was so 10:26AM.

Dusty Baker said...

Or is your GameDay slow?

Dusty Baker said...

High heater for the K!

Way to get out of the jam, Kershaw.

karen said...

Well that was quick

Orel said...

It doesn't feel like we're winning this game.

Orel said...

The Nats have a gecko mascot?

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

It's only the bottom of the fourth?

NicJ said...

Why did I bet on Roosevelt?!?

Dusty Baker said...

I really do like the Presidents Race. But Collins/Lyons comments about it are the worst. #YouAreNotFunny

Dusty Baker said...

Weird to see our pitcher pick up the ball and throw to first base cleanly.

karen said...

Double to the pitcher

NicJ said...

Kershaw should have been out of the inning two of those balls were borderline.

Dusty Baker said...

LA fans just showed up. Way to perpetuate a stereotype, fellas!

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

We are getting no love from the umps.

NicJ said...

Taking a charter train to new York? Is that common? Or is it just cheaper?

Dusty Baker said...

@Nic

Logistically it's easier to just hop a charter train than it is to get the players out to the airport for what amounts to a very quick up and down flight to NY. So overall yeah it's easier just to train it.

karen said...

Damn Dunn

NicJ said...

I thought XP was supposed to be a defensive upgrade.

Dusty Baker said...

KKKKKK

NicJ said...

Clayton finally got that corner.

Mr. Customer said...

I think the defense is so profoundly and universally bad that we can't really chalk it up to a fluke.

Dusty Baker said...

Triple for Furcal!

David said...

Ok, let's cash this run in.

Dusty Baker said...

Lots of action in that left field corner today.

NicJ said...

Runner at third with one out. I've seen this before.

Mr. Customer said...

Let's see some of that big(ger) Russ power.

David said...

RBI groundout at least, please.

Mr. Customer said...

ugh. Dre time.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

This can't end well.

David said...

Ugh. I think our offense is returning to earth.

Mr. Customer said...

Ugh for the K, fingers crossed for Dre.

Dusty Baker said...

Our big hitters should just be pounding the shit out of young/inexperienced/rookie pitchers, but the last few we've faced have stymied us.

Dusty Baker said...

Wasted a triple.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Ugh.

David said...

-facepalm-

NicJ said...

Predictable.

David said...

At least Kershaw still has some juice left in the tank and we don't have to resort to our crappy bullpen just yet.

Steve Sax said...

Still 2-1 as Raffy is stranded 90 feet away.

Man, I miss Manny!

Orel said...

I want Justin Maxwell to win a Silver Slugger.

Orel said...

Cute Dodger fan representing behind home plate. Go us!

Dusty Baker said...

Up to 98 pitches for Kershaw.

Dusty Baker said...

Yeah, noted the LA cutie right behind home. Represent!

Mr. Customer said...

Mr. C 2009 - Up by one, we can handle this.

Mr. C 2010 - Crap, this is gonna suck.

Steve Sax said...

I'm on iPhone today and of course blacked out of At bat TV. Is it still threatening rain?

David said...

shit.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Can Kershaw ever retire the side in order? Must he make things so friggin complicated?

NicJ said...

Seems like they are making pretty good contact with the curveball today.

David said...

That third out is a real toughie

Dusty Baker said...

@Sax

Think we can get this game in before the rain. Tomorrow not looking good.

karen said...

I knew 1 run wouldn't be enough

David said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Dusty Baker said...

Grooved one for the pitcher for the game-tying RBI.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

Freaking fuck.

NicJ said...

Thanks for the "kershaw got him right where he wants them" comment collins you fucking jinx.

No win for Clayton.

Steve Sax said...

Dammit, there went Clayton's only chance at a win.

NicJ said...

Wow no run.

Mr. LA Sports Fan said...

That actually happens to someone who isn't us!!

Dusty Baker said...

I thought we were only team make bone-headed base-running errors at third for the third out?

David said...

Over, but the damage has been done.

Steve Sax said...

Eric Collins must be stopped

Dusty Baker said...

Heh...well said, simultaneously, MLASF.

NicJ said...

Why the hell was XP playing so shallow to begin with. I've seen a rover in softball play deeper than that.

David said...

Clayton you lucky bum.

Mr. Customer said...

Runs will be needed.

NicJ said...

maybe stammen is tired now from loafing around the bases.

Dusty Baker said...

Mr C-

Is your passive sentence structure a metaphor for your feelings about this game?

Mr. Customer said...

@dusty

Actually, yes.

NicJ said...

I hate you loney.

Dusty Baker said...

Has anyone tinkered with MLB At Bat's Twitter feed? I was weirded-out to look down and see one of my own Tweets appear. Turns out they sweep public Twitter feeds for keywords (e.g., #Dodgers, #Nationals). I guess that's ok. Will have to watch my language though cause K-I-D-S watch At Bat.

Dusty Baker said...

I know you too well, Mr. C.

Steve Sax said...

Who stole the dodgers' bats?

Orel said...

CHIN!

karen said...

CAAASEY!

NicJ said...

IF loney would have just struck out that would have Been 2 runs.

Dusty Baker said...

Chinface provides the music today. Hells yeah!

Dusty Baker said...

Mrs. Dusty is claiming credit for having dissed Blake and fired him up for today's game.

NicJ said...

Christ our bullpen sucks.

Dusty Baker said...

Dear NicJ-

Your bullpen does suck.

Yours,
Christ

NicJ said...

There's that error I was waiting for.

NicJ said...

Haha, db.

Dusty Baker said...

Nice first out for Kuo. Helluva good pitch.

NicJ said...

Belisario in.

Orel said...

Finally, some non-incompetent defense.

Dusty Baker said...

Two outs. Have I said W.H.E.W. lately?

rbnlaw said...

Hey DB,
RVP should've been in the entire match last week. With him and Cesc, the Gunners are awesome. Without either, they are less than impressive.

Watching the Man U/Spurs on DVR right now. Looks to be higher scoring than the Dodger game.

Dusty Baker said...

I acknowledge and salute Blake's and JMart's non-incompetentness.

Dusty Baker said...

Won't give up the result for the ManUre/Spurs match, then...thx for the heads up RB. Enjoy!

rbnlaw said...

According to Gameday, the first 3 pitches were in the zone. The first strike was waaay outside.

Dusty Baker said...

Side retired. We go to the 8th. First beer of day now being opened.

rbnlaw said...

Thanks for the non-disclosure, DB.
Gareth Bale looks great, until just now.

The Dodgers with the lead in the 7th used to be a lock. Remember those days?

Me neither.

NicJ said...

I hope broxton isn't too rusty. Feels like he hasn't pitched in a year.

rbnlaw said...

Wow. Bale took a big hit and then came up from left back to challenge for a ball in the Man U box. Impressive.

Meanwhile, 2 up, 2 down for the Blue.

Dusty Baker said...

@RB

I've had Bale on my fantasy squad for most of the year. Low price, huge payoff.

rbnlaw said...

Nice pick up, DB. Thankfully, he's Welsh. The US won't see him in June.

Dusty Baker said...

@RB

Actually I was jsut about to say I wish he were English!

karen said...

Here comes JB

rbnlaw said...

@DB
Ha! You and and a few million Englishmen.

Brox? Now?

NicJ said...

Sweet Caroline in DC, what a rip off.

Dusty Baker said...

@RB

And Mr. C.
