Game 19 result: METS 4, DODGERS 0
Game 20 matchup: Charlie Haeger (0-2, 6.46) vs. Oliver Perez (0-2, 3.71) (Gameday).
There was a time when the Dodgers' offense was ridiculously potent. But the Dodgers got sleepy in Washington, being shutout Sunday 1-0 and then following up with an inspiring 4-0 loss in New York. This, after the team got an extra day off yesterday due to rain; one would think that they had plenty of time to rest up while visiting New York City, right? Or maybe the young Dodgers did all their scoring elsewhere last night?
Let's hope the shower and the long half-hour rest between games pays off. Wait, that second game is already on!

Lineup compliments of Mr LA SF, last GT:
Johnson 7
Loney 3
Ethier 9
Kemp 8
Belliard 5
DeWitt 4
Carroll 6
Ellis 2
Haeger 1
Did the Dodgers even change uniforms and shower after Game 1?
you can't win if you can't score
Spanish works!
two on, one out. What the hell is Reed Johnson and his .265 average doing in the leadoff slot, anyway?
Come on, Kempy
Matt should've taken that pitch. It was a ball.
Spanish commentary is surprisingly easy to follow.
Mierda.
Bummer. KABC feed is fixed.
Knuckleball+Windstorm=???
After that first inning, combined with the crappy weather that will likely destroy the knuckleball, I don't have high hopes for this game.
hey look, we couldn't score in the first!
19 straight scoreless innings
the mets have a runner in scoring position with one out. will they pull a dodgers and strand him?
Game over, man. Game over!
I have had a wonderful time, and unfortunately, this is not it.
We really do suck.
I'm starting to think that Haeger isn't that good. The novelty of the knuckleball is wearing thin.
This marks the end of the Haeger experiment, right?
2-0 and Haeger has but one out. Yay!
What time do the Lakers tip off?
3-0 with two out. Haeger is fooling no one.
I really like charlie but i think our rotation is too bad to have him in it. Then again we dont have any better options.
FUCKING COLLINS I HATE HIM
Looks like the mets are having a lot of fun.
Dammit, it used to be that we had great hitting, crappy pitching and shitty defense. Now we have shitty hitting, pitching and defense?
even Jason Bay can make catches to thwart us
I thought Charley Steiner was going to come out of his rocking chair with that Jason Bay fly out call
(Jason Bay catching a Jamey Carroll fly ball in left)
Why not start the b-team against Johan and save C. Blake and Raffy for Perez?
we cant even take advantage of a dropped foul ball
TWENTY CONSEC INNINGS, NO SCORE
At least we're not losing by double-digit runs most of the time.
just give blanco some fastballs he cant hit!!
thank you.
Let's count all the ways I am feeling pain right now
1) The Dodgers have no offense, failing to score in their twentieth straight inning
2) They are already down 3-0 in game #2 and it's only the second inning
3) Charley and Rick on KABC
4) Eric Collins on KCAL
5) I'm still at work
again, its the damn pitcher. Fastballs please.
Now Furcal has a bad hammy.
They're all making contact on his knuckleball.
I concur with Steve Sax's list.
My own personal addition:
6) Super Street Fighter IV comes out today but I don't get my copy until tomorrow and I have to work all night (a graveyard shift basically) so I don't get to play until Thursday.
i just have to keep telling myself that as long as we dominate within the division we will be fine.
haeger's got a 3-0 count to leadoff the third. what does he do?
two called strikes make it 3-2
and, he strikes out swinging. of course.
@Mr F 5:09p. I saw SSF4 today at retail; the guy said it was flying off the shelves. I recall the old SF but I haven't kept up with the franchise; why is this one so cool?
3-0 count to Reed Johnson, the next batter. What does he do?
We REALLY suck.
Reed Ks swinging
Loney takes two f'ing pitches to get the third out
What a disaster
21 innings of scoreless ball
Does anyone remember Charlie's 12-K performance? I don't.
At least, not at the moment
Oh, he recovered and got the out.
Haeger doing better.
damn, come on blue give the guy a break its a freakin knuckleball.
3-0 through three frames
Haeger does look better after that horrible first inning...
Bay was his first and only K of the game, though (13 batters faced)
Kemp long overdue for another homer
*looking around*
is there still a stool for me here?
@MrLASF: we don't suck, it's a phase.
Ethier leadoff walk! Who wants to bet he scores? any takers?
anyone?
bueller?
Lead off walk!
HI KARINA!!
How long does it take for a phase to become a trend?
THAT'S more like it.
Slump busted. (Kemp's anyway.)
two on, none out! anyone?
However, knowing the Dodgers right now, this frame will be scoreless.
If anyone is going to end this slump, it's Karina.
WELCOME BACK KARINA! Epale!
Andre still looks a little gimpy on the basepaths.
If we don't get a run here my fist is going through a wall.
Ok, maybe with that wild pitch, they'll score one run on a groundout or something.
wild pitch, men on second and third with none out and belliard up
@David there are no outs. Give them some credit.
i hope you live in a soft house MLASF
Karina here to light our darkest hour.
(My 2nd Transformers ref of the day.)
come on Ronnie. mash one here
kemp you bonehead.
@karina Instead of being optimistic, I'm being pessimistic to avoid jinxing.
On the nose, David. Fielder's choice, technically.
Holy crap we scored!
Epale Sax and Nic J!
in play, runs (!!!!!!!!!!)
KARINA ENDS THE GREAT FAMINE!
and of course our only run has (another) matt kemp baserunning gaffe
Matty has been horrific on the basepaths this year.
And as quickly as it began, the Dodgers' threat is extinguished.
great, Furcal is injured too
http://bit.ly/aCitkE
Its looking like no one payed any attention in spring training this year.
@David @Casey game is 3-1 on the 4th. It ain't over 'till it's over.
@sax, and no long term backup SS.
two on, two out, Ellis up. any takers?
It's all up to Ellis to drive in the runs.
@NicJ, yeah, I'm really glad we didn't re-sign Hudson, since we don't need extra infielders.
MOAR RUNZ
Score. Sorry, Karina. Now you can never leave again.
Ellis gets an RBI single! 3-2 NY
Go Haegar, help your own cause
@Steve Sax i haven't been around because i was working at nights, since i live in a wonderful country where we have electricity shortages everyday.Being here would have meant i wouldn't work at all, but i finally manage to make the transition.
Besides, i feel responsible for this lukewarm Dodgers season :(
karina, if you leave me now, you'll take away the greatest part of me.
(and the dodgers.)
ooooooooo, no, baby please don't go.
@Josh S i won't.
3-0!!!
Steve: Lots of conjecture and super long post, but basically: nostalgia + the internet saved the franchise.
(Vanilla) Street Fighter 4 helped kick off a re-birth of the fighting game genre. Before it, there wasn't a new Street Fighter game in over a decade. The last major series (Street Fighter 3) was not only a radical departure from the "classic" SF2 series, but it was also part of the trend of fighting games getting increasingly complicated with steeper and steeper learning curves. That made the Street Fighter and fighting game fan-base shrink and basically killed off arcades in the states.
A lot of people wanted something that evolved from SF2 and was more accessible than SF3 while still being a very deep game that takes years to master. SF4 was finally that game. It was a genuinely good game that nostalgically recalled the classic SF2 series while also having usable over-the-internet match-making.
Fighting games survive because people play them. Since they're competitive, they suit themselves to tournaments. You could have the best fighting game in the world but if nobody plays it, it's still going to suck. Having a ripe internet-connected world helped make Street Fighter a viable game again despite the lack of arcade communities. The hardcore still meet up and have tournaments, but the more casual can play online and find good competition. Casual players now have a mechanism to get into the game, improve, and get more hardcore. Hardcore players aren't at a loss for good competition anymore. The community gets bigger and stronger, and everybody wins.
As for this particular game... most first incarnations of Street Fighter games are sub-par. If they create a new engine, they have a lot of kinks to iron out and they sometimes don't show up for months or years because it takes people time to figure out what's exploitable (this is why there were a million incarnations of SF2--well, this and making money). "Super" seems to correct most of Vanilla SF4's problems (namely overly defensive play and a few overpowered characters). They say this will be the last SF4 game, so hopefully they're true to the word. One revision is welcome, but anymore and people will probably start to get cynical. But I am excited.
WALKS THE PITCHER
Crap, they had to go and take Ollie out.
Time to snap out of the funk. We need a hit DAMMIT!
Whoa, we kicked the starter out before the 5th inning. What was the last time that happened?
perez gone in the fourth after only 72 pitches and still with the lead? I'm confused.
For people from Queens they sure are skilled at the Bronx cheer.
Oliver Perez doesn't want the Dodgers to forget that he's terrible.
Reed Johnson better drive in a run or my fist is going through a wall.
@Fanerman 5:40p: 波動拳
2-0, draw a walk or something, please
(aka Hadoken)
SD already up 2-0 on the fish
3-2 count with two out
everybody's running
even matt kemp
HOORAY FOR BB!!!
WALK!!
@Steve Sax i won't and can't leave you.
I have news. It's decided. I'm going to grad school in the US next year and my dream school is in Southern California, in the greater "Los Angeles area".So, hopefully, i might be kinda closer even if we keep this relationship over the internet :)
(if i get accepted, of course)
Heck yeah! Can't argue with another run.
walks in a run!
3-3 TIE
now lets see a balked in RBI.
Its a Rally folks.
We've gone through the entire batting order this inning
Good patience!
please Loney, represent here
RANCHO ARDIENDO guys!
Please no patented loney weak groundout.
Haeger wearing the jacket on the basepaths. That's old school.
Go King James!
This is tense.
Hi Karina!
dont get tossed loney!!! we dont have a backup!!!
BOO. Gameday didn't think that was a strike.
Loney's been tossed.
Epale Fanerman! (or Mr. F)!
So who plays 1st base? GA?
Mother effer...I don't blame Loney though, Gameday clearly shows it was a ball.
Dammit, Loney!
At least he's furious about the called strike 3.
Bowa tossed
That was a shame
that pitch looks out of the zone, on gameday
Let's see the bright side of this: it's a new ball game now. They're gonna win this one.
just toss the whole team.
Loney is indeed tossed as well.
That was such a ball that Andruw Jones wouldn't have swung at it.
it was really low, and he hadnt been calling low strikes all inning.
For those of you listening on the radio, I hope you are laughing (as I am) that Charley and Rick have no idea who was thrown out. And they've cut to the commercial, to get time to figure it out.
Ridiculous.
Gameday shows that pitch being a shade lower than the fifth pitch, which was a ball.
Rick and Charley must be watching this game from their hotel room
in Moscow
Bowa wasn't tossed. He was just pissed. As am I.
so Casey is back in at third? here comes another torn hamstring.
leadoff single for vitamin waterboy, and here we go
C'mon Haegar, mow them down now
FWIW I am stoked that Loney showed some fire there. Get pissed, James. Get angry.
Then get even!
*crossing fingers for a K or a DP*
Ugh. Belly at 1B = trouble waiting to happen.
@Steve Sax FWIW?
@Mr LA SF 5:53p: thanks for the clarification on Bowa. Rick/Charley got that call wrong as well
DP = dragon punch. But that's cool, too.
nice DP!!
Hell yeah.
King James doesn't seem the type to discuss anything. The more i see the at bat on Gameday, i feel he was totally right.
That call was total BfreakinS! At least we aren't taking it lying down...i hope
Sho-Ryu-Ken!
hey we got three blakes in the infield.
Most people on Amazin' Avenue agree it was a ball. A few people still think it was a strike, and even one person said that Gameday had the pitch right down the middle. Don't know what that guy is smoking.
@Nic j i called that DP!
rrrgh.
blanco's up, please dont walk him.
Gameday's picture of Blanco is quite flattering.
Ugh. Thank goodness for that DP.
agh!
HENRY FREAKIN BLANCO!?!?!
Jeez. That was too close.
Oh snap, we've got a career 1.000 hitter facing us
if Johnson missed that ball that would have been an inside the park HR for the pitcher.
I really apologize for my countrymen performances.
I hate having my emotions played with.
Ryan howard has a bigger payroll than the dodgers.
And I still have the Laker game to contend with.
Three even through four full.
@karina: FWIW = for what it's worth
I highly doubt Albert Pujols is twice as good as Ryan Howard.
Ryan Howard's contract puts a dent in Orlando Hudson's theory.
Ethier called out on strikes. Shit, after Loney last inning, why not?
CC Sabathia's contract put a dent in Orlando Hudson's theory.
Howard strikes out waaaaay to much.
@Steve Sax thank you!
I still would contend that Howard is not half the player that Pujols is.
First 25K mets fans at the game today got a free water bottle.
Maybe Charley brought in a flask as well.
come on kempy
200
iPhone audio is dangerously close to my pc's gameday
no doubt, Albert has a pretty good glove too. Ryan Howard has a pretty subpar throwing arm too, which isnt used a whole lot in his position but still.
Takahashi has an almost Dan Haren like throwing motion.
Charlies gonna get whacked around if he cant get the knuckleball over for strikes.
Walking bonanza
Joe's making the walk of shame.
troncoso's warming up? wow twice in one day.
