Game 128 Thread: August 27 @ Roxette, 12n

Vicente Padilla (8-6, 4.92--but not with us) vs. Jorge De La Rosa (12-8, 4.76).

COMMENTS: Well don't bore us, get to the chorus!...er, make that the rubber match, of what everyone has told us is "the most important series of the season (so far)". And we're sending out Hiroki Kuroda's replacement, a late-season pickup dumped by the Texas Rangers. Did I mention Padilla recently tested positive for swine flu? Hold on tight! You know he's a little bit dangerous!

Taking this game and sticking the Rockies with the big L would leave them fading like a flower, four games back. Listen to your heart, Dodger fans. We've got the look. And I say, nah nah nah nah nah. (And as for you, Rafael Furcal: start walking like a man, hitting like a hammer.)

As an aside, who was that celebrity that Orel mentioned in a post yesterday? Oh, well. It's over now.

The dodgers can waste a lead off double like nobodys business.

Kyle Baker said...

FB, what is this "score runs other than home runs" concept that you speak of?

karina said...

@Neeebs that's very cool! and your wife can help you with the slang.

I Alivandi said...

Ah, I forgot about no hit Willy.

I Alivandi said...

When I think of Westminster...I don't think about Westminster.

Kyle Baker said...

Note to C Steiner: It's VICENTE, with no "N" before the "C." Surely you have had ample opportunity to explore this pronunciation before game time.

Fred's Brim said...

DB i'm not sure. I read about it in a Whitey Herzog biography, sounded like something we should try

I Alivandi said...

That was a hell of a play by Furcal.

Wow, it looks like they got him.

Fred's Brim said...

did we get robbed again?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

@Karina:

Usually I get a response like, "oh..it's kinda hard to explain in English."

Kyle Baker said...

All's well that ends well. Let's get some runs! (home run generated or otherwise)

Fred's Brim said...

agreed - if they want to serve meatballs, it would be rude to turn them down

koufax said...

why did gonzalez come out of the game?

I Alivandi said...

Wow. Since when does Furcal not make that?

Kyle Baker said...

At least Furcal doesn't spend much time at the plate, thus my anger level with him doesn't have a chance to really get going.

Paul said...

I didn't even have time to predict Furcal would get out.

Jeez.

Kyle Baker said...

@ Paul

It's a standing prediction, so no need to weigh in individually each time.

koufax said...

lets pick the bison up

I Alivandi said...

Grass fed Bison.

karina said...

@Neeebs i'd wish ic ould help. No wonder your Spanish looks very good.

karina said...

@koufax i'd wish i know why, now i'm freaking out.

I Alivandi said...

Wow. Did that say 99? On the corner?

Paul said...

Gametacker says! That was outside.

I Alivandi said...

Weak. Pitch to him.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Dissing Blake with the IBB to Manny.

Paul said...

Come on Casey

War within a beard, i mean breath

Kyle Baker said...

Make them pay, Casey, make them pay.

I Alivandi said...

Hey. A decent call for the Dodgers.

Vinny and his deuces.

Kyle Baker said...

Conf call scheduled for 2 despite my protests. They want my masterful insight that I usually reserve for this space. I plan to conduct a speed-call and not take any questions. Or take any shit.

I Alivandi said...

Matt Kemp is fast.

I Alivandi said...

APODACA!

Kyle Baker said...

Make them pay, Loney, make them pay.

Paul said...

In a world where the bases were loaded there was only one man who could stop the Rockies tyranny.....that man was James Loney.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

I just bobbed the bobblehead.

Come on James.

Loney Fan said...

Come on Loney. Now or never!

Paul said...

shit. was that on the corner?

Kyle Baker said...

Gotta swing that wooden thingy what's in your hands.

Loney Fan said...

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Bobble Loney gets turned around and is now looking out the window with his back to me.

I Alivandi said...

That pitch was so clearly below his knees.

Booger said...

I think Loney got hosed on that. Even the rockies' announcer said it was low.

NicJ said...

How the hell were those strikes?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Time for LF to change his screen name.

Kyle Baker said...

Didn't physically see it, but if it's that close, he at least needs to foul it off. Torre might also go over that concept in his upcoming day-off mandatory Little League-inspired training session.

Fred's Brim said...

damnation

stay tough this inning, V

I Alivandi said...

Dusty - Loney had zero chance of hitting that pitch if he swung.

Loney Fan said...

Still not changing the screen name. But very tired of his lousy performance.

Kyle Baker said...

Thanks Ali. Like I said, I couldn't see it. If it was that bad we should send Padilla out to argue the call and "take someone with him."

Loney Fan said...

That was our chance to hit on JDLR. Now it's time to take advantage of the supposedly worn-out bullpen.

I Alivandi said...

Dusty - Loney couldn't have fouled that off if he tried.

Paul said...

is the homeplate ump blind in his right eye?

Unknown said...

Padilla is what they call "mildly servicable!"

Paul said...

From his reputation he is "extra spicey"

Wesley Vento said...

Loney, surprisingly, hits lefties better than righties. I give up on trying to understand baseball.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

O-Doggy!

Kyle Baker said...

Gameday had that pitch #2 to O hitting him right in the nads.

Wesley Vento said...

woof woof

rbnlaw said...

Hey, late to the party, but willing to play catch-up at the bar.

Looks like we've been stranding runners again, but Padilla has been steady.

Kyle Baker said...

@RB

Just in time - it's your round!

Dusto_Magnifico said...

either something is wrong with gameday or something is wrong with the ump... unless all of a sudden they changed the rules around and balls are strikes and strikes are balls?

Paul said...

I had more hope for Loretta.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

Loney hits nothing and I am tired of it.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Atta boy Raffy.

Paul said...

Furcal!!?

Where have you been all my life?

rbnlaw said...

Forkal; clutch? I must be dreaming?

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Kemp is a stud.

Fred's Brim said...

Raffy, thank you, sir!

I Alivandi said...

Clutch baby, clutch.

karina said...

Dusto, he hit a 3 RBI HR last night and a leadoff double today, he ain't that bad.

I'm also a little bit disappointed at him

karina said...

It's time for Ethier to produce.

rbnlaw said...

@DB:
That happens to me a lot.

Let's keep the hit parade going.

Steve Sax said...

Furcal finally does what other Dodgers can't do--cash in a run.

Two-out single scores Hudson

Steve Sax said...

Too bad Kemp can't do more, but I'll take the 3-2 lead.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

yes, loney had one good game. i wish it made up for the rest of May, June, and August.

Fred's Brim said...

ok cmon bullpen, keep these mofos quiet!

Paul said...

man on gameday it looked like Andre missed one.

Fred's Brim said...

and thank you Vicente - i hope this is a sign of things to come!

Steve Sax said...

For someone forced to watch Gameday on the iPhone for the past three frustrating innings (save the last one where we actually scored a run)--those "strikes" against the Dodgers looked soooooooo far outside, it was ridiculous.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

why bring in kuo to face tulo?

I Alivandi said...

Nothing but bloops, flares and ducksnorts for Tulo.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

yeah... gameday must have been having problems, or the ump had a seizure, because Loney's K with the bases loaded looked like it should have been ball 4. None of the pitches came anywhere near the plate. Then Padilla took advantage of the same corner in the top half.

I Alivandi said...

Dusto - Why not? Kuo owns all, not just lefties. Plus, 2 lefties after Tulo.

I Alivandi said...

What the hell? Ausmus had him cold.

Furcal missed the tag I think.

I Alivandi said...

Whew.

I have come to the realization that Brad Ausmus is the absolute best back up for Russell Martin. I hope we keep him around.

I Alivandi said...

THAT is why they brought in Hong-Chih Kuo

Paul said...

wow I totally forgot Manny was playing today.

Ken said...

striking out the side ey

Steve Sax said...

We've had the leadoff guy on base in the first, second, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings

That guy has come around to score in only two of the prior four chances

Let's see what happens here in the seventh. I'm not hopeful.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

loney sucks

Steve Sax said...

Loney
--did get a leadoff double, but didn't score

--then stranded three with two outs

--now GIDP

I thought you were freed, dammit!

I Alivandi said...

I am sure Dusto finds a way to make that hard liner a poor reflection on Loney.

Paul said...

Troncoso has Richey Rich eyes.

Steve Sax said...

Tron comes in, Yorvit gets on. Yay.

Why not let the Kuo ride? Now we're in even more trouble. At least Torrealba doesn't steal.

I Alivandi said...

Sax - James LIDP, not GIDP. That ball was hit on the screws.

Steve Sax said...

Paul that's Richie Rich.

Fred's Brim said...

how is Tronny's beard today?

Dusto_Magnifico said...

yeah... bad luck. I guess. Lonely doesn't get out of the doghouse with 1 home run though. After months of doing his best to emulate Juan Pierre, I wont all of a sudden trust him to not be Juan Pierre because of one home run in Colorado. I'm hoping for a real first baseman next year. If Loney had defensive skills then fine, but dude is just league average.

Steve Sax said...

@Alivandi: maybe so, but "on the screws" is indeed what happened, either way.

Okay, so maybe he's not exactly shackled, but not exactly freed either.

karina said...

@Sax

Loney
--did get a leadoff double, but didn't score

It wasn't his fault that he didn't score.

Steve Sax said...

@Alivandi part 2: Thanks, btw, for filling me in on the play. Gameday does have its limitations...

...as does work

Steve Sax said...

@karina, true true on FJL not scoring.

Hey, I'm usually the James Loney supporter! What is going on here?

Steve Sax said...

Are we subbing out Tron?

Paul said...

Richard Rich Jr. to be excact.

Steve Sax said...

Oh, Sherill. Our love, holds on, holds on.

Wesley Vento said...

Fo' Shizzle my Brizzle

Steve Sax said...

Castro in for Beard? What gives?

Paul said...

Thanks Sax, not the song I wanted in my head.

Steve Sax said...

Why not Castro for Raffy?

Paul said...

Breezy in da heeezy.

Steve Sax said...

Paul, it's not like you haven't had Don't Stop Believing slammed into your head all year thanks to the Charles Steinberg Steamroller

Steve Sax said...

Charles Steinberg gets 1% royalties as per his new deal with Steve Perry

I Alivandi said...

Why Joe? Why? What if you need Blake later in the game?

Wesley Vento said...

Double switch so Sherrill can come back in the 8th to pitch to Helton.

Steve Sax said...

BOOM goes the dynamite. Nice job, George!

Steve Sax said...

Oh, Sherill

Our love

Holds on

Holds on

Paul said...

Maybe Blake needed to trim the beard.

I Alivandi said...

Sax - Furcal is coming up way before Blake would. It was a double switch. The question is why DS at all? Just pinch someone and don't lose Blake.

Paul said...

Sax

stop being a foolish heart.

Wesley Vento said...

Helton, a lefty, leads off the bottom of the 8th. Torre wants his best reliever from the left side to pitch to him. That's why you switch. Castro has been pretty money off the bench this year and you don't lose anything defensively. I like the call by Torre here.

karina said...

@Steve Sax "Hey, I'm usually the James Loney supporter! What is going on here?"

Don't leave me alone on this, Steve.

Loney Fan said...

I'll defend Loney with you Karina

Paul said...

A bunch of Loney fans por vida!!!

I Alivandi said...

HLACK - You have a point, except of course that Sherrill isn't the Dodgers' best lefty reliever (I realize he was already used)

Steve Sax said...

Morales gets O-Dog to K to lead off the 8th. At least we won't have the embarrassment of not scoring a leadoff runner.

Steve Sax said...

@Alivandi, given how Furcal has played this series, vs. how Beard has played, I would have sat Furcal

That said, I would have sat Furcal before filling out my lineup card to begin with, but that's another story.

Wesley Vento said...

Alivandi,

Kuo is awesome, thus the homage I pay in my screen name, but Sherrill has been just as unhittable to left handed batters and the 8th inning is Breezy's to lose right now.

Steve Sax said...

Juan is not making the most of his double-switch opportunity here.

Blake would have hit a home run.

karina said...

Morales owns the Dodgers.

Paul said...

Franklin seems like such a nice boy too.

Wesley Vento said...

Sax,

If you double switch and take Furcal out, you have the pitcher hitting 4th in the inning, with an insurance run on base if he comes to bat. Then you have to either pinch hit for Sherrill, who now can't pitch to the Rockies best left-handed batter, and probably use Martin to pinch hit (and he's struggling mightily as well). By replacing Blake, who would be hitting 8th in the inning, you give your team the best chance it has to score an insurance run without using up an extra bench spot. If Blake's spot comes up again that inning, you've already scored at least two runs so you wouldn't need him anyway. Sherrill had to come in to pitch to Smith, so you should keep him in to pitch the 8th b/c you don't have any other left handed relievers left in the pen. Its the right move.

Fred's Brim said...

what's the strategy for the 8th and 9th? Sherrill then ?? then Brox?

karina said...

@Paul he is not. He plays for Leones del Caracas, which means he's in the same league as another obnoxious Giants player.

I Alivandi said...

As an aside - Now that Hurdle is gone, are the Rockies still pushing the religion really hard on their players?

Fred's Brim said...

Do they have Brett Butler and Chad Curtis in their front office?

I Alivandi said...

HLACK - Sherrill didn't have to come in in the 7th. Smith has murdered lefties this year. While it was successful, it was a questionable move.

karina said...

Is anyone watching on the TV? has someone said something about Carlos Gonzalez?

Wesley Vento said...

Yes. Give Sherrill the 8th and Brox can finish off the 9th. That's the best scenario for the Dodgers bullpen.

Steve Sax said...

Tulo has killed us today, 3-for-3

rbnlaw said...

STRIKE THREE CALLED!

Steve Sax said...

@HLACK, fair point on the double-switch. I'm with you.

Steve Sax said...

Wow, we actually got Tulo out today. Sherill K

I Alivandi said...

HLACK - Kuo should have the 8th and Sherrill should be trouble shooting lefty heavy, but not exclusive earlier innings.

Wesley Vento said...

Sherrill is the 2nd best reliever in the bullpen. That's when you use him. Torre plays those match ups no matter what. Smith has murdered lefties this year, but in only 28 AB's. Breezy is one of the best in the business vs. Lefties. Every manager in baseball with the Dodgers personnel makes the same switch.

Fred's Brim said...

rbn, i could hear Vin say that as I read your post

rbnlaw said...

Gotta drive home.

I Alivandi said...

FB - Funny stuff. There was a big article on their overt pushing of evangelical christianity on the clubhouse.

I Alivandi said...

Now what do you do? They should bring out Ox right now.

I Alivandi said...

YAY!!! Joe listened.

Fred's Brim said...

cmon Breez - finish this off, no HRs

Wesley Vento said...

Kuo hasn't earned the 8th inning back yet.

Fred's Brim said...

cmon Brox - finish this off, no HRs

Steve Sax said...

Here comes big Jon. Get us four outs, Brox.

Steve Sax said...

Brox vs. Rox.

First up, PH Garrett Atkins.

Vin will mention he's a Bruin.

Steve Sax said...

Atkins is 0-for-2 vs. Brox, so he's due

Paul said...

I want some insurance runs brought to you by AFLAC.

karina said...

I want an insurance run.

Wesley Vento said...

just because, Raffy's going deep right now.

Steve Sax said...

Whoo hoo Brox!!!

Fred's Brim said...

attboy Brox!
i wanna insurance run too! gimmegimme!

Steve Sax said...

Raffy, if you hit a three-run HR here I will stop bagging on you

Wesley Vento said...

he almost got that one!

Wesley Vento said...

crud

Kyle Baker said...

I will keep bagging on you, Raffy!

Ken said...

needs a triple~!

Steve Sax said...

Furcal ends the day 1-for-4 with a walk. And sadly, that is almost beneficial to his batting average.

Wesley Vento said...

Kemp needs a triple for the cycle

Ken said...

damn it~

Steve Sax said...

Can anybody please hit Franklin Morales

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Yo Quiero Insurance

Steve Sax said...

@Ken, HLACK: How sweet would it be to get another cycle this year, after waiting so long for someone to dethrone Wes Parker's most recent cycle? Wow, I hadn't even thought seriously about that until now.

Steve Sax said...

Here you go, Neeebs.

Steve Sax said...

Andre you are not ending this game 0-for-5

Steve Sax said...

atta boy

Steve Sax said...

boo him all you want, Rox fans, it just makes him angry.

And you wouldn't like Manny when he's angry.

Wesley Vento said...

Hey Sax,

Wouldn't it be sweet if it was Furcal?

Ken said...

Did Ethier steal a base on a IBB?

gCHOW said...

LOL, defensive indifference?

Wesley Vento said...

Defensive indifference.

Wesley Vento said...

i think its retarded to have to go through the motions of throwing 4 balls to a hitter for an IBB. The manager should just tell the umpire and he should get a base.

gCHOW said...

lets go brox!!!!

Paul said...

man I wish I could watch Brox hit.

Ken said...

if he catches one, he could hit it a long way

Steve Sax said...

Rafael Betancourt comes in to force Broxton to hit or be removed. I'm guessing Brox is swinging the bat.

Wesley Vento said...

3 run BOMB!!! LOL

gCHOW said...

come on big boi!!!!

I Alivandi said...

I actually was at a game that Broxton pitched in.

Wow, he took a rip there.

Dusto_Magnifico said...

woah... is this Broxtons first at bat.

Steve Sax said...

@HLACK, on MLB08 The Show, IBBs occur in only one pitch, not four (if you're batting). Perhaps they should just do that.

But still add four to the pitch count, just for kicks

Kyle Baker said...

I'm going to put my fist through my secretary's computer monitor if we blow this.

Steve Sax said...

well, that was fast.

I Alivandi said...

Dusto - Not ever. That was his 8th career PA. 2 BB and now 6 outs. Has not struck out since 2006.

He took a walk in the game I saw him step up to the box in.

Kyle Baker said...

101 MPH

I Alivandi said...

Aquavit is up.

Fred's Brim said...

cmon JB let's go to Cincinnati happy

I Alivandi said...

Wow. Of all their hitters to single off Broxton.

karina said...

Why is always the venezuelan?

Teach them, Brox!

Ken said...

omg

Kyle Baker said...

FURCAL!!!!!What the FUCK is wrong with you bastard?

Steve Sax said...
