Game 42 Thread: May 17 @ Angels, 1p

Chan Ho Park (1-0, 2.16) vs. Ervin Santana (6-0, 2.63).

COMMENTS: Geez this is depressing. Can we just fast-forward to the next series against the Reds? It's hard to muster much optimism for today's game, given the Dodgers' dismal track record at Angel Stadium, Joe Torre's less-than-inspiring choice for starting pitcher, and the Angels' resurgent Santana pitching like, well, that other Santana. Blake DeWitt's injury continues to expose the Dodgers' shortcomings: Russell Martin's enthusiasm can't hide the fact he's playing way out of position at third, Gary Bennett is going to allow more runs with his suspect defense than he drives in with his bat, and WE DON'T HAVE A STOPPER. I'm going to be realistic here: We'll be lucky to win one game this weekend. So here's a picture of WALL•E and his girlfriend EVE!

What's with all the Wall-E pictures? Trying to boost the Angels' former owner?

Santana + Park = Santana Moss?

Eric Karros said...

Who's the first baseball player named Wally that comes to mind, and who did he begin and end his career with? Maybe that's what's causing bad karma...

Orel said...

Pierre, LF
Ethier, RF
Martin, C
Loney, 1B
Sweeney, DH
Jones, CF
DeWitt, 3B
Maza, 2B
Hu, SS
Park, P

Sweeney over Kemp? You've gotta be kidding me.

karina said...

Good news: Blake Dewitt is starting today.

Bad news: as Orel says, Sweeney and Jones over Matt Kemp?

I think Joe Torre should give a press conference about this decision, because i don't think anyone can really understand this.

isn't it the whole point of the DH to be a hitter able to make things happen?

Eric Karros said...

Hello! Another GameDay game for moi

Orel said...

WELCOME BACK, BLAKE DeWITT!

karina said...

Andruw Jones walks, DeWitt HOMERS!

karina said...

Eric, you know what they said about Andruw Jones in the broadcast:

he's batting 177, LOWEST in the MLB.

he's hitting .033 with RISP.

and Matt Kemp is on the bench. What do have Ethier and Kemp to do in order to play on a regular basis?

karina said...

I'm getting the game on tv for a second day on the row.

Eric Karros said...

.033 with RISP. Wow.

Orel said...

And Park promptly gives up the leadoff double.

Eric Karros said...

I don't get Sax's Santana + Park = Santana Moss comment

Eric Karros said...

In anticipation of Chan Ho Park's start, I have loaded my fridge with high fructose syrup products

karina said...

look what i've found from a very mean angels fan:

karina said...

good idea, Eric!

These Dodgers are keeping me away from my size 0 goal.

Eric Karros said...

Park escapes the leadoff double!

Eric Karros said...

Last time I saw you on one of these game threads I don't think you had the gnome icon. Looks good.

Orel said...

I have to say, Park impressive through three. 2-0 Dodgers.

karina said...

It's for team's luck.

Orel said...

"I don't get Sax's Santana + Park = Santana Moss comment."

Me neither.

Steve Sax said...

Sax checking in here. I don't know what is more surprising, a two-out walk to Tubbs, or the fact that he plated with DeWitt's HR.

Hu gets a leadoff walk in the third, and up comes Slappy.

karina said...

neither do i.

Orel said...

Hu walks, Pierre hit! Way to take one for the team, Juan!

Eric Karros said...

Sax, you have mystified us all with your Santana Moss comment.

Orel said...

EK, did you miss Karina with the gnome on her shoulder?

Karina, this will help with long links: http://tinyurl.com/

Orel said...

Ethier double + RBI! Pierre to 3rd! 3-0 Dodgers! I can't believe it!

karina said...

RBI single by Ethier!

Orel said...

Orel said...

Oops, Ethier singled.

Eric Karros said...

bring it!

karina said...

4-0, Loney's up.

Eyeing infield single by my son Martin.

NO OUTS.

Orel said...

Karina, you're too young for him to be your son. Maybe brother?

Steve Sax said...

Park, moss; both greenery?

Okay, it's a stretch.

Orel said...

A little.

karina said...

I know Orel, but i think i love him like i'd love my son.

Thanks for the tinyurl link!

Orel said...

Andruw seems to be showing more discipline this AB.

Orel said...

Never mind. Andruw K's to end the inning.

Steve Sax said...

Speaking of a stretch, Chan Ho has been pretty good through two.

Orel said...

Through three!

Eric Karros said...

Sax are you joining the race?

karina said...

I can't talk to you in that game thread. I suck, but i like it, so give me some time.

Orel said...

Park plunks Vlad. Might as well save a few pitches, eh?

Eric Karros said...

keep practicing Karina.

Sax, we're waiting for you at:

Eric Karros said...

It really is hard to keep concentration through a long passage

Eric Karros said...

oops, that comment was meant for the typeracer thread

Steve Sax said...

Sax is on blackberry, and talking in the third person. Sorry, I'm out.

Fox spends time talking with Torre, and Park gets so pissed off that he's off camera, that he beans Vlad.

karina said...

Torre just said he believes in Jones all the way. Argh.

Eric Karros said...

Karina, I think if we did it in your native language the tables might be turned

Orel said...

Chan Ho having some trouble in the 4th. 1st & 3rd, one out.

Steve Sax said...

Dammit, my loud neighbor decided to scream to her dogs, waking my son up. Sax may be out here...

Orel said...

Aargh, Loney botches the 3-6-3 DP. Dodgers 4, Angels 1, still one out.

karina said...

I was thinking the same thing, can we do that?

love typeracer!

I think we're really a bunch of geeks.

karina said...

Loney hasn't had a good game today. Dissapointment shows in his face. Poor thing.

Orel said...

Man up, Chan Ho!

Orel said...

Loney almost does it again!

Yes, we are a bunch of geeks.

karina said...

I think i want to hug James Loney.

Orel said...

Looks like he could use a hug.

Eric Karros said...

Karina - Sax, Orel, and I trained under the same typing master years ago. I kid you now.

Orel said...

Shit, bases loaded.

karina said...

Bases loaded or el rancho esta ardiendo...

i'm nervous, let's wait for our next racer.

karina said...

*race

Orel said...

(The real) Karros is really defending Park. "It's not his fault!"

Eric Karros said...

Is that what they say in Venezuela? "el rancho esta ardiendo..."?

Orel said...

PHEW! Line drive but straight to Maza.

Eric Karros said...

crap, el rancho esta ardiendo again after walk to Mathis

Orel said...

"The farm is burning?"

karina said...

Yep, baseball slang for bases loaded: "el rancho esta ardiendo". Every time you hear it, there's a venezuelan around.

karina said...

Rancho could also be translated as a very humble house.

karina said...

C-mon, King James, you can do something with this at-bat!

Orel said...

I don't see Sweeney doing anything good here.

Orel said...

Weak, goat-man!

karina said...

Only thing i can think of is Matt Kemp is riding the bench.

karina said...

Dodgers don't have a fifth starter, they have a couple of pitchers who can pitch together every fifth game, bringing Proctor, Beimel and Broxton on the 8th, depending of the score.

Orel said...

I know. It's funny how we're the opposite of management: We give the kids the benefit of the doubt; management prefers veterans.

Orel said...

But the lack of a fifth starter means we have to carry 12 pitchers, weakening the bench.

karina said...

Right and the bench is already weak, i mean, we have Sweeney as the pinch hitter and wasting huge amounts of kids development.

I think i'll be in internal combustion if Torre and Colletti keep benching Ethier and Kemp.

Orel said...

Bad news: Penny isn't starting tomorrow. Lowe is.

karina said...

why isn't he starting? is he injured?

Eric Karros said...

crap, Kuo is one ball away from letting the Angels burn the ranch again

Orel said...

Management is always going to err on the side of older players.

Orel said...

Penny has a sore back. They're giving him an extra day off just to be safe—he'll start Monday in Cincinnati.

Orel said...

Santana is settling down as he reaches 100 pitches.

karina said...

We can't forget Torre is coming from the Yankees.

I think there's a problem with those sore backs. There must be something wrong with their diet, their conditioning...

Orel said...

But they don't eat candy in the clubhouse!

karina said...

Does Andruw Jones look like he has cut off the candy?

The Yankees have cut off candy but the way they have been playing, they could use all the candy available.

Orel said...

Good inning for Kuo.

Orel said...

Finally, some bad defense for the Angels.

karina said...

and the Angels bad defense continues...

5-0

Orel said...

Juan Pierre almost created that run from scratch.

karina said...

We'll have to give him LOTS of credit.

karina said...

Broxton is warming up in the bullpen.

karina said...

Maza RBI!

Steve Sax said...

Maza has been a-maza-ing in this game. Way to rally for a run with two out, youngsters!

And a wistful shot of Nomar as DeWitt returns to the dugout after scoring the run.

Jones got NO jump on Vlad's leadoff single in the 8th.

Steve Sax said...

Karina, sorry this comment is late but I'm totally with you on Sweeney. Why Sweeney? He was 0-for-4 today.

On the other hand, LOVE hearing the "Let's go, Dodgers" cheers at Anaheim Stadium.

Steve Sax said...

Is it any coincidence that the Rays get rid of "devil", and they now lead the AL East?

Pierre flies out to start out the ninth. He scored a run in the seventh but is 0-for-4. The debate continues.

karina said...

That's my "son"

It's not like Sweeney is 0-4 today, it's like he's slumped all season long. That's not a good sign for a pinch hitter.

It's not like Loney's 0-4 today, because he has 4 HR and 27 RBI.

Let's go King James!

Steve Sax said...

Go Dodgers!!! Big win for the Bluuuuuue!

Orel said...

Saito allows a run but closes it out. Truly an unexpected win today!

karina said...

Gnome is happy too! Let's go Blue!
