Penny Invokes "Backdraft" Reference in Defending Jones

On the day that Andruw Jones comes out and says he's embarrassed by his poor hitting this season, Brad Penny comes out in defense of Jones. What is remarkable is not the fact that Penny, who casts a fairly large shadow on the field as well, has come to his teammate's defense; what is remarkable is that Penny is quoting Kurt Russell when doing so:

In his first at-bat Saturday night, Jones struck out on three pitches against Houston's Chris Sampson. The boos at Dodger Stadium became louder with each swing and miss.

Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny said he wishes that would stop.

"I've never played with a nicer guy," Penny said. "Every Dodger fan should be cheering for him to come out of this. If he goes, we go. I know how good he is. Defensively, he's incredible, even through all this. He's saved my butt a few times. His main goal is to help this ballclub win. We're good right now. When he starts hitting, we'll be great."

Which got me thinking, what other Kurt Russell quotes might Penny have used to describe his feelings for Andruw Jones?

  • "You slow down, dickhead! I'm the one dying!" (Snake Plissken, from "Escape from L.A.")
  • "Hey swab. C'mere. Listen up. Now, the way it works shipboard is, you do your job. You do it good, you get a better job. Maybe you get promoted from swab to mate." (Captain Ron, from the movie by the same name)
  • "I know looks can be deceiving, but I'm a teetotaler. I've been drinking club soda and lime all night, and now I'm buildin' up to my big drink." (Stuntman Mike, from "Grindhouse")
  • "You know what your problem is?, You are so god damn bored you have to invent things to bitch about. You don't have a single thing to do on this earth except for your hair." (Dean Proffitt, from "Overboard")
  • "Would you just stop rubbing your body up against mine, because I can't concentrate when you do that." (Jack Burton, from "Big Trouble in Little China")

Hmm, maybe Penny chose the right Kurt Russell quote after all.

I just saw Escape From New York last night and while watching I vaguely remembered there was a post involving Snake Plissken. So I looked it up but initially misspelled 'Plissken' and the search came up empty. So for a moment I thought maybe the Snake Plissken post was my imagination. But thankfully I am very resourceful, and I got clever and went to imdb to find the correct spelling of Snake's surname. I eventually was able to verify that there was indeed a Snake Plissken-related post, and this is it. And after all that work, I felt obligated to comment, which I am doing now.
