Game 48 Thread: May 24 vs. Cardinals, 7p

Brad Penny (5-4, 5.34) vs Kyle Lohse (3-2, 4.71).

COMMENTS: ATTENTION ANDRUW JONES: PLEASE REPORT TO THE O.R. IMMEDIATELY. YOU ARE NEEDED IN SURGERY. After being thoroughly flummoxed by Adam Wainwright's hammer curve (and the rain) last night, the Dodgers look to rebound against Lohse tonight. The Dodgers will need more than Russell Martin to perform, as they squandered scoring opportunities all night and left eight men on base. Meanwhile, which side of Penny will turn up? Although Derek Lowe finally managed to steady himself last night, we're still waiting to see if Penny's arm injury is serious enough to land him on the disabled list. Not that Clayton Kershaw needs the additional pressure. Let's just put it this way: Break out the bats tonight and give Kershaw some confidence for tomorrow, okay?

After last night's pathetic rally-killing Jones strikeout, let's see if any Dodger bats show up tonight. It's cold out there!

Pierre, LF
Maza, 2B
Ethier, RF
Martin, C
Loney, 1B
Kemp, CF
DeWitt, 3B
Hu, SS
Penny, P

No Furcal, and Torre has enough confidence in Maza to bat him second tonight, but not to let him PH last night instead of Jones.

Update from Tony Jackson: "Because there was a misunderstanding between Jeff Kent and Joe Torre that resulted in Kent coming to the park today expecting to play, he has been added back into the lineup. He'll take tomorrow off, then return on Monday at Chicago."

Just returned from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Lucite Skull. SoSG capsule review: fun!

Eric Karros said...

I'm actually at the theater right now about to see Crystal Skull...i'll try to check in after...

Orel said...

Albert Pujols batting a mere .347 with only 11 HRs.

Orel said...

D'backs lost to the Braves.

Orel said...

Back-to-back singles by Ethier & Martin!

Orel said...

All these fly-ball outs by Kent would have been HRs in the past.

Orel said...

Eeeee! There's Clayton!

Orel said...

Ugh. 2 LOB so far.

Orel said...

Penny plunks Ankiel. Nice job, Brad.

Orel said...

Nice 3-6-1 DP to end the inning!

Orel said...

Penny throws 11 straight balls, then Duncan drives a run in. Pujols up. Great.

Orel said...

One thing I will say, I think Andruw might have caught that.

Orel said...

Ankiel doubles, 4-0 Cards. All with two out. Penny sucks.

Hi, guys.

Maza is clutch! i´ve seen him lots of times, breaking my heart since he plays for a different team. He plays for a team which have won 4 championships in 7 seasons this decade –tournament was suspended once, due to the general strike, when it was suspended, his team was first in their division–.

This guy knows one or two things about winning championships *sigh*

Indy was so much fun, how about this new view on spirituality? about greed of knowledge and spiritual power? it is familiar with a saga we were discussing...

Orel said...

Hi Karina, unfortunately Maza ended up not starting tonight. But that doesn't mean we won't see him later, we need the offense!

Orel said...

Very astute observation, Karina. Indy always seems to be surrounded by greedy characters.

Orel said...

Juan Pierre nailed stealing!

"The dollar has been devalued against the euro, and Penny has been devalued against the National League." —Vin

That´s bad, those bats seem to be cold.

The objects of desire in the Indiana Jones films are always related to huge spiritual power. The villains don´t look for them to attain spiritual growth or knowledge, they want to use them to dominate the world.

Their greediness always impair their judgement, since they can´t really understand the power of such objects, therefore not thinking in appropiate ways to obtain and use them.

In the previous installments, we always watched greedy characters in the first act of the movie, as a clue to establish Indy as the noble hero, the passionate antropologist (it´s very clear in The Last Crusade)

karina said...

Vin's the best!

karina said...

Are you watching the game on the TV?

Do they look that bad at the plate?

Orel said...

Karina, you should be in film school!

Orel said...

Pierre with the diving catch on Pujols' blooper!

karina said...

one of my degrees is film-related and i've worked on some films (though i don't have anything to do with screenwriting)

karina said...

Penny has straightened up. They need to hit!

Orel said...

You are a smart cookie.

Penny will pitch the 7th! Typical Penny outing: six great innings, one crappy one. No run support.

Orel said...

Pierre bunts his way on. Rally time!

Orel said...

Furcal not accompanying the team to Chicago. Sorry, Erin.

Orel said...

E-6! Two on, one out!

Orel said...

Correction, base hit for Ethier.

karina said...

Martin's up!

Orel said...

Jeff Kent, again flashing warning-track power. Vin says the Dodgers are 0-for-13 with RISP?!

karina said...

In fact, the Dodgers have 6 hits, the Cardinals have 4. Without clutch, it's impossible to win any game.

They have left 10 men on base...

Orel said...

Penny with another scoreless inning. Why does he have to fall apart once every six/seven innings?

Orel said...

How unusual. It sounds like someone is singing TMOTTB over the P.A.

karina said...

I can't stop thinking the Dodgers will face Carlos Zambrano and Johan Santana next week.

It gives me the chills Carlos Zambrano has showed a whole lot with his bat this season, i mean, he had four hits in his last game. God, he could bat clean-up on this team.

karina said...

TMOTTB?

Orel said...

Pujols caught the ball at first then ran off the bag because Kemp was running...quite a testament to Kemp's size and speed.

Orel said...

Dodgers go down meekly in the 7th. We're headed for our third shutout of the season.

Orel said...

"Take Me Out to the Ballgame"

karina said...

That's why these youngsters need to play as much as possible, it's the only way to exploit their true potential.

Orel said...

Is there a seventh-inning stretch in Venezuelan baseball?

karina said...

Silly me, this is the 7th inning! how could i not understand the acronym?

Orel said...

I am addicted to Pepperidge Farms Goldfish.

karina said...

Sure. In Maracaibo, we have different lyrics for the music of "Take me out to the Ballgame".
In the other stadiums, they all have different traditions for the 7th inning stretch.

karina said...

what's that?

Orel said...

Would you mind singing the Maracaibo version right now? Or just typing the lyrics.

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish

Orel said...

Glaus can't handle Pierre's bullet!

karina said...

Vamos a darle suerte,
al equipo campeón,
que las Aguilas tienen poder
y esta es la mejor ocasión

Es el séptimo inning
vamos a darle acción
Hombres, niños, mujeres
ligando a ganar
este juego de basebaaaaall

Then the announcer says Aguilas
and the fans answer A la cargaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

karina said...

Those crackers look tasty...

Orel said...

They don't just look tasty...they are tasty!

karina said...

I bet Eric had much more fun watching Indy than we watching/reading the game.

Orel said...

We are going to give luck him
to the equipment champion
that the Eagles must be able and this is the best occasio
He is seventh inning
we are going to give action him
Men, children, women binding to win
this game of basebaaaaall

karina said...

So far this series, the bullpen has been remarkable.

Orel said...

I know, EK didn't miss a thing tonight.

Orel said...

The bullpen has been solid all year. Except for Broxton's one meltdown.

karina said...

We are going to give luck
to the champion team
that the Eagles are powerful
and this is the best occasion
It is the seventh inning
we are going to give some action him
Men, children, women bonding
to win
this game of basebaaaaall

=)

Orel said...

NOW Kent gets a base hit. Thanks, Jeff!

Orel said...

Hey, I was close!

Okay, not really.

karina said...

if we had someone to bat clean up...if the starting pitching was not that inconsistent...

karina said...

What´s up with King James and his slump?

Orel said...

James is not feeling it right now. But remember, he had a 15-game hit streak earlier this season.

Barn on fire for Kemp....

Orel said...

Kemp whiffs on the high cheese. One out left.

karina said...

He spoilt us (or me, for that matter).

It's ok, slump or not, he's becoming in one of my favorite ballplayers nowadays.

Orel said...

Well that was pretty miserable. Nice seeing you again, Karina. Don't forget, Clayton Kershaw tomorrow!

Good night!

karina said...

Good night! (they'll broadcast the game tomorrow, yay!)

Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Time to fire up the car and take a road trip to Chicago...

Steve Sax said...

AC, your roadtrip to Chi-town may be the Dodgers' only hope. Lucky for you, gas prices are low. I'll see if we can take an advance against future SoSG revenues.

Eric Karros said...

Just got out of the movie - not bad!
