Game 40 Thread: May 15 vs. Cardinals, 7.10p

Dodgers start Derek Lowe, RHP (3-4, 3.61) vs. Adam Wainwright, RHP (3-2, 5.01).

Dodgers: 23-16 (1st place NL West, 2.0 GA, L1)
Cardinals: 16-20 (5th place NL Central, 8.0 GB, W1)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: For eight innings, Lowe couldn't have pitched much better against the Marlins. He dueled Sergio Mitre with a four-hit shutout, but a walk, an error and a three-run walk-off blast by Josh Willingham turned it into a tough end to a mediocre trip. It was only the second home run Lowe has allowed this year. He has five quality starts in eight assignments.

Cardinals: Wainwright put together the second leg of back-to-back wins for the first time this season on Wednesday, pitching six innings of two-run ball against the Rockies. Wainwright stayed out of trouble in the first inning, which has been a key for the tall right-hander. He didn't walk a batter and got ahead of hitters all day. It appears as if Wainwright is settling into being a starter, but he will certaintly have a tougher task this time around, facing a potent Dodgers lineup.

COMMENTS:

  • Losing last night's game to the Cardinals was a disaster of Tomko-esque proportions. I am desperately hoping that Grady Little's decision to pull Russell Martin, Nomar Garciaparra, and Jeff Kent early on in the slaughter only allowed them to rest up for tonight's matchup. Given how poorly Grady's other major decision last night went (i.e., to keep Brett Tomko in there until we were bloodied, beaten, and staring at a eight-run hole), I'm not too hopeful.

UPDATE, 4.41p:

From Inside the Dodgers, the lineup:

Furcal, SS
Pierre, CF
Nomar, 1B
Kent, 2B
Gonzo, LF
Martin, C
Ethier, RF
LaRoche, 3B
Lowe, P

Here's hoping Adam Wainwright pitches like Loudon Wainwright.

I hope the game isn't over by 815pm tonight. Dancing With Stars isn't on tonight as a credible backup.

Wally: As Alex Cora pointed out on yesterday's Game Thread, I think Brett Tomko had a television show he wanted to catch, too. Which is why he was in the locker room and showered by 8p (just in time for "How I Met Your Mother"!)

Why wont grady move Martin up in the lineup and move Gonzo DOWN?

James Loney went 2-4 tonight with 2 doubles and 3 rbis

Kuo up from AAA and Valdez designated for assignment

Will Jeff Kent hit a HR tonight??

Orel said...

Valdez DFA? Let's see if some other team picks him up.

Pujols is now 0-9 in last 9 AB's vs Dodgers.

Alex Cora said...

WOW! We did something with the bases loaded. Good job by Ethier going 0-2 before doubling up the middle.

wow wainwright wobbly

Was that an IBB to A ROCHE?

Pujols RBI single. Thanks for the jinx there, EK.

Eric Karros said...

My bad. Pujols is now batting 1.000 in his last 1 AB's vs Dodgers.

FYI though: in the 3 games covering Pujols 0-9 vs. Dodgers streak, the Dodgers went 0-3. So maybe him getting a hit is a good thing. Anyways I'm hitting the sack. East coast living is rough for a west coast sports fan.

Cardinals score 4 in the 3rd. So it's going to be one of those games.

Alex Cora said...

Holy crap. Turnabout is fair play after Tomko's preformance.

A 6-run inning for the Dodgers! We haven't had one of those in a while.

Furcal raises his average to .294

Lowe seems to settling down. Good for him.

Eckstein has so much grit

Alex Cora said...

Beimel came in and shut em down, nice job. Looks like Grady is really managing this one, as opposed to the other games when he leaves his pitchers in until they are broiled and done.

Welcome back, HCK!

Orel said...

from DT: grit + hustle = gristle

1 in, 2 on, 0 out for the Cards. No lead is safe!

Alex Cora said...

Why did Grady bring Kuo in to face 4 right handed batters?

Steve Sax said...

Brox gets the K on Spezio!

Steve Sax said...

Big Jon slams the door!

Orel said...

And Broxton puts out the fire with two K's. Nice.

Steve Sax said...

Furcal was batting .218 on Saturday. His twelve hits over th last three games have him close to .300. Amazing!

O Saenz!

Sd and sf take the one-run losses. Good night, everybody!
