Game 31 Thread: May 6 @ Braves, 10:05a

Dodgers start Randy Wolf, LHP (3-3, 5.05) vs. Kyle Davies, RHP (0-1, 6.75).

Dodgers: 18-12 (1st place NL West, 1.5 GA, W1)
Braves: 18-11 (2nd place NL East, 1.0 GB, L1)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Needing to rest a bullpen weary from Sunday's 17-inning marathon, Wolf wobbled through his shortest stint as a Dodger. He had no command of his curveball, served up a home run to Chris Young with his second pitch of the night and was charged with six runs in 5 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and four walks. His history of challenging Barry Bonds had been pretty good, but Wolf served up a three-run homer to Bonds in the first inning and was also taken deep by Pedro Feliz in Wednesday night's loss to the Giants. He was charged with five runs in six innings, and the two home runs gave him five long balls allowed in 30 innings this year.

Braves: After struggling with his control in the second inning this past Sunday at Coors Field, Davies battled back and at least retired the final five batters he faced in a four-inning outing. Since showing signs of optimism during his first start of the season, the 23-year-old right-hander has regressed and found trouble locating the strike zone. In his past eight innings, he's surrendered nine earned runs and issued 11 walks.

COMMENTS:

  • East coast road games are great in that you can listen to the Dodgers on your commute home and watch them before dinner. These Sunday morning games, though, are really, really early, and you're likely to miss the first four innings if you sleep in. With that in mind, we're posting this now before we think too much about Saturday's much-needed six-run outburst from the formerly lackadaisical Dodgers offense. Let's see if Wolf can hold the mound against the Braves' youngster, which would let the Dodgers sneak out of Atlanta with their second series victory after losing the first game (a win tomorrow would also give the Dodgers their third straight winning series).
  • Any guesses on whether Wilson Betemit starts after his pinch-hit home run Saturday? We'll see. Grady Little is one unpredictable guy!

Andy LaRoche called up, in the starting lineup today hitting 6th.

Thanks Scoscia. Yes, it's true. LaRoche called up when Marlon Anderson got put on the DL for a "sore elbow.". A stay of execution for Betemit (batting .140, 18Ks, 8 hits).

Doesn't this sound a bit like Russell Martin last year?

LaRoche flies out in his first major league at bat, with Gonzo on 1st, for the second out.

Isn't it illegal to play baseball this early in the morning?

Posted the LaRoche news up top.

That's no dog!

Randy Wolf: 7 K's in 3 innings.

Wow, this is the first time I have really watched Wolf, but he works FAST. Its like he has to take a leak when he is on the mound. Much different than Penny who walks around the mound and gets that sweat from his hair after every pitch.

Hilarious, the TBS announcer said "Now for the Aflac trivia question..." and after the duck walked by and screamed AFLAC, the announcer mumbled "Yeah, I said that..." under his breath with a little disgust.

Kyle Davies: 6 K's in 3.5 innings.

As much as Wolf has all of those K's, Davies is looking strong AND people aren't even getting on base. This is going to be a tough game.

Even better...as the TBS announcer was explaining the Aflac trivia answer, the duck came on and screamed AFLAC, and he said "SHUT UP!" HA HA HA.

LA-ROUCHE - congrats on your first MLB hit - hopefully many more to come!

LaRoche sneaks it in off the Ethier hit

Alex Cora said...

Wow! He looked out to me...Francour has a GUN (something that I don't get to see with our outfielders).

Pierre blows the rally, dodger lead 2-1.

Nice slide by Wolf btw.

50 PUSHUPS at the PLATE NOW Pierre!

Who is worse Skip or Chip Carey?

Steve Sax is watching the game with his brother (Alto Sax), and Alto thinks Wolf is pitching a good game through five.

Alex Cora said...

Why is Rudy Seanz warming up? We have the lead an it is NOT a blowout! Stop the madness!

Alex Cora said...

Wolf is looking tired... 100 + pitches.

Steve Sax said...

Yep, that Betemit--I've always liked him.

Seriously, we may have found our new Olmedo Saenz. Just kidding.

Steve Sax said...

Great, Tsao ends his perfection with a flourish. Braves 6-4.

Steve Sax said...

Boo. The Dodgers' bullpen gives the game away. Crap!
