Game 37 Thread: May 12 vs. Reds, 7.10p

Dodgers start Brad Penny, RHP (4-0, 1.39) vs. Kyle Lohse, RHP (1-3, 3.21).

Dodgers: 21-15 (1st place NL West, 1.5 GA, W1)
Reds: 15-21 (6th and last place NL Central, 10.0 GB, L1)

From Dodgers.com, the scouting report on the starters:

Dodgers: Returning to Florida on Monday to face his former team, Penny was about as overpowering as he’d been as a Dodger. He struck out a career-high 14, the most for a Dodgers pitcher in seven years. Penny walked none and didn't allow a runner to advance past second base. He’s just a tick away from the best ERA in the National League and appears headed toward a second-straight All-Star berth.

Reds: Lohse was charged with three earned runs and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings in his outing on Monday, walking two and striking out two. He lost to Roy Oswalt and the Astros, 5-4, after Todd Coffey gave up a three-run homer in the eighth. Lohse retired 10 in a row at one point and has had back-to-back strong outings.

COMMENTS:

  • Last night at Dodger Stadium, the only fireworks came after the game, with the Dodgers in the locker room. It was great to get the victory, thanks to Randy Wolf's domination and 11 strikeouts--but if the Dodgers think that two runs scored in the bottom of the first inning are going to cut it against a real team, they're kidding themselves. Luckily for us, we've got the Reds for two more games here at the Ravine.
  • We're still waiting for that lineup shakeup that Grady Little promised two days ago. Inside the Dodgers (MLB) says that tonight we'll trot out the same lineup we've been using for the last two weeks (including last night). If Little doesn't do something soon, we're going to be as distressed as the caps we are giving away tonight (before you think it's "free," consider that you'll have to watch a trailer of "The Sandlot 2: Heading Home." Believe me, the least they can do for you after inflicting that pain is give you a baseball cap.)

I predict the dodgers hit a homerun tonight

Who's gonna hit it? I say Eithier.

Geez, Gonzo needs to hustle more, get that damn ball in!!!

Penny looks off. Reds 1, Dodgers 0, on to bottom 1.

Furcal swings at the first tch and pops out. Pierre whiffs weakly. At least Nomar got a hit.

Steve Sax said...

Someone please take a damn pitch!

Alex Cora said...

Wow, hit and run with GOnzo. Gutsy

1-1 into the fourth.
Juan pierre caught stealing. Great.

Vin Scully is really excited about the size of Josh Hamilton's shoes (size 18). Read into that what you will.

Penny is grooving now, 2 Ks in the fourth.

Steve Sax said...

Gonzo gets a hit for that weak-ass fly ball? No way.

Alex Cora said...

Ok Penny time to help yourself!

Steve Sax said...

3rd RBI of the year for Penny! Nice walk with the bases juiced.

Alex Cora said...

Pierre still needs to hit that ON THE GROUND. ie - look at Furcal.

Steve Sax said...

This rally has the weakest hits ever. I feel like I'm watching the Sandlot kids.

a hit is a hit though

A five-spot in the bottom of the fourth leaves it 6-1 Dodgers. SF, AZ have lost; SD is losing. This could be good if we can hold on.

The Coca-Cola Family pack (4 tix, 4 dodger dogs, 4 cokes) starts at $62. Isn't that pretty expensive, even for a family of four? Plus there is $15 for parking. Sounds pricey.

IBB again to get to Penny, with men at the corners. They started pitching to LaRoche but got behind in the count and gave up.

Wise decision for the Reds this time, as Penny grounds out.

Steve Sax said...

Penny is having quite a game. 96 pitches through six full, 4 Ks, 17 in a row retired.

Steve Sax said...

Pierre hits yet another pop fly, and this time it doesn't fall. One away in the bottom of the sixth, Furcal stuck at first.

Steve Sax said...

Sorry, I'm only counting sixteen in a row retired. My bad earlier.

How did Gonzalez not make that play on the grounder? That's the second time he's gotten stuffed.

Steve Sax said...

Base hit to Hamilton to lead off the top seven. Bummer for Penny as it breaks the streak, but he is still throwing gas.

Steve Sax said...

Penny is now out of gas; he leaves the game with men at first and second after 6.1 innings. Nice job Brad, don't worry. He's getting a well-deserved standing O.

Alex Cora said...

Nice relief pitching. Glad those baserunners weren't charged to Penny. I think he leads the NL with his ERA still.

Steve Sax said...

What the hell happened to Hamilton on that play? I think he is gesturing that he had trouble wiht th elights, or maybe catching the ball against the backdrop of the seats? Anyway, Gonzo thanks him for the triple.

Beimel vs. Griffey, top 8 with two out.

Steve Sax said...

And Beimel gets the K. Griffey will not get his 570th tonight. On to bottom 8, 7-1 Blue.

Steve Sax said...

It's all over in SD and they lose to St Louis 5-0. A win tonight puts the dodgers up a game each on SF, AZ, and now SD.

Steve Sax said...

Damon, you've got two more outs to get your Dodger home run...

Alex Cora said...

Uh, what the hell is going on...

Steve Sax said...

Beimel can't do it, so Seanez has to come in for the final out ( a long fly out). Dodgers win 7-3.

Good night, everybody!

Alex Cora said...

Damn, Rudy closed out a game! Amazing. Good game, lucky and timely hits. Go Blue!
