Game 96 Thread: July 12 vs. Padres, 7p

Paul Maholm (1-4, 5.18) vs. Ian Kennedy (7-9, 3.71).

-------

Lady Macbeth:
Out, damn'd spot! out, I say!—One; two: why, then
'tis time to do't.—Hell is murky.—Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier, and
afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our
pow'r to accompt?—Yet who would have thought the old man to
have had so much blood in him?

Macbeth Act 5, scene 1

-------

While our team sits in a tie for first place in the division, most Dodger fans would probably cite William Shakespeare himself in considering Paul Maholm, he of the 1-4, 5.51 ERA in seven starts this season. Maholm's outings have been as short as 3.2 IP (May 14 vs. Miami) and the decision after Friday's game to start Maholm as a "spot starter" sounds like "nonsense, my lord, nonsense", indeed. We do know the fear of Maholm's starts, as Shakespeare presaged. Whether the blood on this old man (Maholm, 32, is in his 10th year of major league service) is his own, or the Padres', is yet to be seen.

Or maybe the outs of which Shakespeare speaks are the outs that the Padres will be making? Well, if the Padres don't make four errors in a game, one might think they've got a shot at winning tonight (Maholm could take note of Haren's outing yesterday, when he was done in during the fifth inning on consecutive two-baggers from Chase Headley and Carlos Quentin; also from Macbeth, Shakespeare noted, "Double, double: toil and trouble". Yikes, that Shakespeare guy is clairvoyant!).

Hope Maholm is up to the challenge this evening, ere this might be yet another Shakespearean tragedy at the Ravine.

Does Josh Bard still play for the Madres?

Does it seem as if every other team is trading and dealing but us? Does Ned the Terrible think we're good to go for the rest of the season? Help me understand....

What's more, he got a sweet piece of memorabilia (I'll let him post on that later).

Look for the guy with the blue shirt behind the plate

Maholm with a no-hitter through two

karen said...

Is it just me or does anyone else find the color of Ian Kennedy's beard as opposed to his hair just a little curious?

spank said...

Bean the mofo!!

spank said...

Mahalo

karen said...

For those who can't see the game, we're talking a carrot colored beard and plain old everyday brown hair (on his head). For those who can see it, no need to adjust your sets.

karen said...

Aloha Spankster!

spank said...

yo Karen!!

spank said...

i think you are color blind Karen or you may need to upgrade that Quasar television.

Steve Sax said...

Maholm with a no-hitter through three. And, he lays down the sac bunt to advance Rojas to second. One out, B3, no score

karen said...

Man that was close at first.

Steve Sax said...

Dee Gordon is inexplicably first-pitch swinging (in play, out)

Steve Sax said...

STOP BUNTING DEE

spank said...

well shit. that sucked ass.

Steve Sax said...

When Dee was good earlier this season, he had stopped trying these stupid and ineffective bunts. Why is he regressing?

STOP BUNTING DEE

Steve Sax said...

Dee's failed bunt cost us a chance at a run. 0-0 through 3.

karen said...

No way Spank. If I'm seeing those colors that wrong, there's a lot more wrong with me then just the Quasar!! =)

karen said...

I am still waiting for some good ol' payback on Quentin and Kennedy.

Steve Sax said...

There goes the no-hitter...but it's 0-0 through 3.5 innings.

Steve Sax said...

0-0 through four.

Have the Dodgers' bats already gone on the All-Star break?

Steve Sax said...

And, Puig has already been ejected, forcing us to play Crawford. Great.

Acting like an all-star there, Yasiel!

spank said...

oh shit. i was looking at Mahalo's beard not Kennedy's. My bad Karen. Your Quasar and eyesight are still in good standing.

karen said...

Phew Spank...I thought I was having an acid flashback!!

spank said...

Headley

Steve Sax said...

Maholm has five scoreless innings.

This isn't going to last much longer, Dodgers. Put some damn runs on the board!

Steve Sax said...

Ellis, now 0-for-2 in the game and batting .219 on the year.

Steve Sax said...

We need a HR from you Rojas

spank said...

Someone needs to put acid on Kennedy's dumb beard.

Steve Sax said...

scoreless through five

Steve Sax said...

Padres' Irving Falu bunt grounds out, 2-3.

See, Dee? STOP BUNTING

spank said...

Mahalo pitching a dandy.

spank said...

and score some runs goddammit

Steve Sax said...

Scoreless through six.

Yawn

Steve Sax said...

leadoff single for Headley in the seventh

Steve Sax said...

League with a scoreless seventh?!

What is going on here

Greg said...

Watching Padres video feed with MLB KLAC audio. Weird, but it works.
Dammit Kemp.

Steve Sax said...

could have been rancho ardiendo there, if not for Kemp's CS

Orel said...

Steve Sax said...

Geez, that was depressing

Steve Sax said...

AJ Ellis and Rojas both pop out, to end the seventh-inning threat (two Dodgers on base, one out). Boo.

Steve Sax said...

0-0 through 7.

Steve Sax said...

Howell gets his three outs in the eighth. 0-0 through 7.5

Steve Sax said...

Hey, I don't want to get political around these parts, but we are absolutely persecuting Falu; Gong!

Steve Sax said...

PH, Gordon, CC for the Dodgers in B8

Steve Sax said...

SVS K. One out

Steve Sax said...

nobody wants to score here!

Steve Sax said...

Dee Ks. (DQ?)

Two out

Steve Sax said...

Someone needs to tell the Dodgers it's the frickin' Padres

Steve Sax said...

CC flies out.

0-0 through eight innings.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

Steve Sax said...

one-out single by Seth Smith in the top of the ninth

spank said...

Headley

Steve Sax said...

Jansen in for the ninth

karen said...

Somehow I think that if Kennedy had bee beaned between the eyes as he had coming to him, his performance may not have been quite so "magnificent".

Steve Sax said...

Headley is a .230 BA but just kills us (2-for-3 tonight, alone)

spank said...

All we need is one pin,Rodney.

Steve Sax said...

Come on, A-gon

Steve Sax said...

Leadoff double! Except it's A-Gon, so we will probably need a PR?

karen said...

AGon gets us off to a good start...

Steve Sax said...

Man Quackenbush has a crazy beard

spank said...

dammit matty

Steve Sax said...

IBB Ethier to get to the soft part of our order: Uribe, Ellis, Rojas

Steve Sax said...

2-2 to Uribe

Steve Sax said...

full count to Uribe. Vin is basically predicting a K here

Steve Sax said...

(vin basically said Uribe has walked few times, and has Kd often)

Steve Sax said...

Way outside. Rancho Ardiendo.

AJ Ellis up.

Sounds a lot like the seventh inning...

Steve Sax said...

Vin: Dodgers with bases loaded, hitting .175 this year. Yay.

Orel said...

RANCHO ARDIENDO

Steve Sax said...

(the "Yay" was me, not Vin)

Steve Sax said...

Padres go with five infielders, no left fielder

Steve Sax said...

Ellis in a 0-2 hole quickly.

Steve Sax said...

AJ WALK OFF SAC FLY TO RIGHT!
