Game 94 Thread: July 10 vs. Padres, 7p

First fan through the gates gets 40,000 of these Hello Kitty travel mugs. Or maybe it's the other way around.

Odrisamer Despaigne (pronounced O-DREE-SA-MEHR DES-PAWN-NYAY) (2-0, 0.92) vs. Clayton Kershaw (pronounced CLAY-TON KER-SHAW) (10-2, 1.85).

It's The Kid versus a kid tonight, as grizzled vet Kershaw (age: 26) brings his two Cy Youngs and his current 36-inning scoreless streak against the rookie Despaigne (age: 27), the Padres' Cuban import who's making the fourth start of his career.

The Dodgers are licking their wounds after a painful two-game sweep by the Tigers, while the Padres stack up like this:

  • runs: 269 (30th overall)
  • batting average: .215 (30th overall)
  • on-base percentage: .275 (30th overall)
  • slugging percentage: .337 (30th overall)

Piece of cake, right? Except the Pads always play the Dodgers tough (Dodgers are 4-2 against them so far this year). After that Verlander game, we know better than to take anything for granted.

Sorry to Scooby-Doo it, but I've dropped in a new post about how the Giants just lost to Oakland, 6-1.

TBLA had a thing on how historically bad the Padres offense is. All of which means they are gonna score 7 runs tonight

Hello Walter Kitty

Fred's Brim said...

Bright Lights, Big Kittys

Orel said...

Josh Tucker is leaving the Dodgers

Fred's Brim said...

Gnomes, apply for the job!

Hideo Nomo said...

I have zero qualifications, but a strong body of work.

Fred's Brim said...

Spank said he's write you a letter of recommendation

Orel said...

So would Neeebs' mom

Fred's Brim said...

Clean inning for Clayton but a few more foul balls than usual

Fred's Brim said...

Vin saying Despaigne looks older than his listed 27 years

Fred's Brim said...

Dee with a sharp single up the middle

Franklin Stubbs said...

That's a good start.

Fred's Brim said...

Hmm Hanley batting second tonight, hmm Donnie trying to shake things up?

Fred's Brim said...

Hanley grounds into the hole cleared by Dee's attempted steal

Franklin Stubbs said...

Vin's way of calling bullshit on the listed age was appropriately polite.

Fred's Brim said...

Puig chaces a Puiggy pitch

Fred's Brim said...

chases^

Fred's Brim said...

Gotta get Dee home

Franklin Stubbs said...

UJTD as Gonzo is slower than mole asses.

Fred's Brim said...

for fuck's sake! devil jumpin all up in our face

Fred's Brim said...

Puig with the non-shadey glasses?

Fred's Brim said...

narsty curve to end the inning, only 7 pitches that inning

Fred's Brim said...

Despaigne has a weird high-80s slider thingy that we can't get their bat on for some reason

Fred's Brim said...

nothing doin in the second

Fred's Brim said...

SD gets a hit and bunts the runner to second but that as far as they get

Fred's Brim said...

Amarista with a wild throw, AJ gets on

Fred's Brim said...

With Clayton bunting, a passed ball lets AJ scoot to second

Fred's Brim said...

Clayton bunts perfectly to the 3B so AJ can get to third (where he'll be stranded)

Franklin Stubbs said...

Futility is impending

Orel said...

Can HanRam drive home A.J.?

Fred's Brim said...

Dee can't lay off 3 straight inside curve balls. not sure what they must have looked like but none of them were remotely hittable

Orel said...

Hey FB, how's your pitch recognition?

Franklin Stubbs said...

Ayup. That's a familiar flavor

Fred's Brim said...

lotsa slow stuff from Despaigne this inning

Fred's Brim said...

@Orel - I know if they are thrown to our batters, they won't get hit very hard

Fred's Brim said...

if at all

Orel said...

Pitch recognition is my weak point

karen said...

Vinny is right, as usual, Despaigne looks much closer to 37 than 27.

Orel said...

Like slider vs. cutter? Couldn't tell you

Fred's Brim said...

are we going to lose 1-0 after Clayton is taken out?

Orel said...

So Despaigne is Greg Oden?

Franklin Stubbs said...

His knees haven't exploded, so the similarity is only superficial

Franklin Stubbs said...

Consecutive scoreless streak at 40 and counting for the kid. I now declare it officially interesting.

Orel said...

40

Fred's Brim said...

@Orel me neither, I just assume they are sliders unless someone tells me it's a cutter.

Fred's Brim said...

and if I don't see the pitch speed I couldn't tell you if it's a slider or a changeup with some funny movement

Franklin Stubbs said...

It's a good thing that throw was offline.

Fred's Brim said...

Puig with the hustle double off Despaigne

Fred's Brim said...

@Stubbs we couldn't waste a leadoff double if that throw was online

Fred's Brim said...

Adrian advanced Puig to third with a grounder to first

Fred's Brim said...

Adrian advanced Puig to third with a grounder to first

Fred's Brim said...

infield way in

Fred's Brim said...

just a fly ball, Matty

Franklin Stubbs said...

Good point, FB.

Here it comes again.

Fred's Brim said...

sheezus we stink

Franklin Stubbs said...

NOT FUTILITY!

Fred's Brim said...

wow, a miracle single from SVS, 1-0 good guys

Franklin Stubbs said...

Van Slyke with the merciful bloop single

Fred's Brim said...

Phew-tility!

Fred's Brim said...

Uribe does what Kemp should have done, flies out to right

Fred's Brim said...

woah, 4-pitch walk to Maybin

Fred's Brim said...

Maybin steals second

Fred's Brim said...

Dee goes and gets the grounder and throws out Amarista

Orel said...

There's your run, Clayton

Orel said...

Jill Painter Lopez ‏@jillpainter 3m

Hello Kitty fans relentless. Resounding boos when Dodgers PA announces giveaway mugs weren't all shippped. Thought all here for Kershaw..

Fred's Brim said...

Clayton works 6 pitches out of Despaigne before striking out

Orel said...

That LeBron tweet was from a fake account. How could you steer us wrong, Jill Painter Lopez?

Fred's Brim said...

Dee with a small chopper to the pitcher for the third out

Orel said...

The Hello Kitty travel mug fiasco is entirely real, however

Greg said...

Kershaw touches the side of the camera well rail every time he comes in from pitching an inning.

Hideo Nomo said...

Twitter dammit?

Orel said...

Give that camera well rail an assist!

Franklin Stubbs said...

Most Valuable Camera Well

Greg said...

It's helping so far.

Fred's Brim said...

well fuck

Headley

Fred's Brim said...

now we have to somehow score another run

Fred's Brim said...

Dammit, Marine Layer, where were you on that?!

Orel said...

E-marine layer

Fred's Brim said...

Clayton was the closest to that pop fly, Adrian and AJ are not fast men

Fred's Brim said...

how the heck are we going to score again?

Orel said...

Clearly Clayton's secret was the camera well rail. It was all over once Greg exposed it

karen said...

The Podrays have no other reason to exist other then to fuck with the Dodgers.

NO OTHER REASON.

Greg said...

I feel much shame.
He didn't touch it after the last inning.

Greg said...

Nice, Hanley.

Fred's Brim said...

Hanley lucky to get to second, then third

Franklin Stubbs said...

Yakety-sax defense, but I'll take it.

Fred's Brim said...

how will he be stranded?

Franklin Stubbs said...

Yasiel no sabe

Orel said...

Hanley single/steal/PB to third???

Fred's Brim said...

@Orel, steal, bad throw that bounced to the right of second, far enough away for Hanley to get to third without a throw

Fred's Brim said...

infield in works for the first out

Fred's Brim said...

Adrian needs to get going, at least get a sac fly

Franklin Stubbs said...

@orel

Yep. Bad throw, missed catch and collision at second, and everyone else in the infield standing around watching it all go down.

Franklin Stubbs said...

DAMMIT

Orel said...

Ha ha, thanks boys

Fred's Brim said...

Do your job, Adrian

Franklin Stubbs said...

Bitchin.

Fred's Brim said...

that's how you do it! thank you!
2-1 good guys

Fred's Brim said...

time for Matty to rip one

Fred's Brim said...

close enough

Orel said...

Kemp single!

Orel said...

When's the last time Kemp stole a base?

Fred's Brim said...

Another bad throw from Amarista, SVS safe, Matty gets to third, SVS to second

Franklin Stubbs said...

Nice to see the gods of defense are balancing the cosmic books for all the April suffering.

Fred's Brim said...

Uribe swinging on the first pitch and grounds to second meekly

Hideo Nomo said...

Late to this joke, but:

The marine layer helped out the team that salutes the Marines every Sunday.

Fred's Brim said...

perfectly placed grounder with one out

Fred's Brim said...

Matty snags the fly for the second out, Maybin up to be a pain in the ass

Fred's Brim said...

Puig runs over to get the third out

Fred's Brim said...

Clayton fooled again by a pitcher's pitch

Fred's Brim said...

Dee can't lay off the curve balls, barely makes contact

Fred's Brim said...

Dee makes better contact on the curve but flies to left, on to the 8th

Orel said...

Kershaw will start the 8th with 97 pitches

Fred's Brim said...

defensive changes coming?

Fred's Brim said...

yep, Rojas at short for Hanley

Fred's Brim said...

Liner to SVS in center for out number one

Fred's Brim said...

Venable PH for Despaigne

Fred's Brim said...

fly ball to Puig

Fred's Brim said...

Denorfia Ks, Clayton through 8 with 108 pitches. So Clayton or Kenley for the 9th?

Fred's Brim said...

Quackenbush in for SD

Franklin Stubbs said...

Kenley. Nothing for K to prove now.

Fred's Brim said...

how does SD always have a good bullpen?

Franklin Stubbs said...

Defensive gift.

Fred's Brim said...

awesome push bunt by Rojas, throw goes into the dugout so Rojas to second

Fred's Brim said...

it's like Christmas in July!

Franklin Stubbs said...

I'd guess it'a the Petco effect. Everyone stays fresher with lower scoring games.

Fred's Brim said...

Puig not looking for that pitch

Orel said...

Quackenbush!

Dodger bullpen in the bottom of the 8th. No one warming up. Kershaw's finishing this. #Dodgers

Fred's Brim said...

Clayton still wrapped up and gamefaced in the dougout

Fred's Brim said...

^dugout

Franklin Stubbs said...

Very well, then.

Fred's Brim said...

oh man, these early-season flashbacks are too much for me, it's like Jacob's Ladder 2

Orel said...

Matty wasting no time. Three pitches, three strikes

Fred's Brim said...

seems like you would at least have him up, right?

Fred's Brim said...

second time staring at a fastball down the middle

Orel said...

SVS follows suit

Orel said...

Does it mortally offend a starting pitcher if you warm up the closer just in case? Seems like one of those unwritten rules

Orel said...

Guess who's up first?

Fred's Brim said...

wow, naaaasty curve gets Headley

Steve Sax said...

We've gotta learn how to score a runner on second with none out. It's ridiculous.

Fred's Brim said...

@Orel - I could see that

Fred's Brim said...

Quentin pops to left for the second out

Franklin Stubbs said...

WIN, bishes!

karen said...

This Kid is just awesome.

Orel said...

Bullpen management by Don Mattingly.

Fred's Brim said...

YES! PartymakinClaytonisawesomeTime!

Fred's Brim said...

wow, 3 hits and a walk

Fred's Brim said...

gnite yall!
