Winless Teams That Finally Got Into The Win Column (April 8)

  • Dodgers, 10-2 over Pirates
  • Reds, 2-1 over Cardinals
  • Nationals, 6-5 over Phillies
  • Orioles, 5-4 over Rays
  • Cubs, 2-0 over Braves

I'd like to say we're in great company, but this cross-section of late-succeeding teams doesn't leave me very inspired.

That leaves only Houston, swept by the Giants in three games, as the sole winless team in the majors. Idle today, the 'Stros have no chance at getting a W until tomorrow.

The Yankees opened up their 2009 season by losing two in a row on the road in Baltimore against the lowly Orioles. They had CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett pitch those first two games.

The Phillies began their '09 campaign by losing two straight to the Braves in Philly.

The Cardinals split two at home against the Pirates in April of 2009.

In 2008, the Cubs lost their first two, then went on to have the best record in the NL.

Sometimes, good teams have slow starts. I'm not saying the Dodgers will be a great team this year, or that they will win as many games. What I am saying is: It's April 8, for the love of God.

Logic?! That has no place on the internet!

Catharsis, however, is always welcome here.

@HF 5:02p: I usually don't trust people with two first names, but I like your logic. We like to bounce off the guardrails here at SoSG, so give me a couple of hours before I'm breathing well again.

I still have nightmares of Lastings Milledge crossing the plate with a walk-off run.

Also, the Yankme's is an appropriate analogy, but the Phils played a better team than the Pirates.

As for the Cards in 2009 and Cubs in 2008, I don't hold those teams as high, since we swept both their asses out of the playoffs in NLDSs.

Kyle Baker said...

Does Lastings Milledge have two first names or two last names? Either way, I dont' trust him, either.

All the folks using honorifics in the "Top Commenters" list makes me feel like I'm part of a bizarro Reservoir Dogs cast.

Neeebs (The Original) said...

Yeah, especially that Mr. Nnn.
Why three "n"s?

Nostradamus said...

Perhaps he works at the Ninnesota Nining and Nanufacturing company.

Eric Karros said...

Sax - I would actually argue that Harrison Leonard has two last names. So you should totally trust him.

NNNBop was a great song.

@EK

I don't know, I've never really trusted that Garrison Keillor.

Steve Sax said...

I really, really don't trust Philip Michael Thomas.

*Update* Ad Cubs to the list.

Wow Sax.

Talk about Kill Buzzington or whatever I called myself.

@Harrison, I hear you. Keep commenting! Seriously, sometimes I need the counterpoint before I drown myself in sorrow. Thanks--

No problem, Saxy. I've been a daily reader for two years now. I'm not a big commenter, but I'll contribute more here.

It is interesting the amount of games the Dodgers play on the east coast this April.

I guess it is better than having to play them in the humid summer months. I remember when the schedule was so consistent and every year the dreaded Philly, Montreal, New York road trip.

This Lakers-Nuggets game is going to the wire. Tied at 94 with 1.22 left

Steve Sax said...

Nuggets by one and the Lakers just tuirned over their second in a row. Odom shooting foul on Anthony.

Steve Sax said...

Fisher fouled with 32 seconds left, he shoots two. Lakers down by three.

Fisher nails 'em both, down by 1, Nuggets ball.

Steve Sax said...

What is up with the Machine this year? He's hot and cold like Katy Perry.

Paul said...

Clippers updates only please.

Steve Sax said...

great steal by shannon brown, but an errant throw afterward looks like it's going to go against the lakers (ball out of bounds on FIsher)

What's wrong with Blogger? Three comments are missing.

Steve Sax said...

Well, that was a thoroughly unsatisfying last possession by the Lakers, costing them the game. Fisher blocked by Anthony at the perimeter. Ugh.

@Harrison Zachary Leonard (I can only presume there's a "IV" in there somewhere):

Excellent perspective. Thanks for breaking it down that way. I will only drown my Dodger sorrows in nine beers, not 12, on the next loss to an inferior team.

Update:

I just got those missing two beers back. Mrs. Dusty-in-law just called from the road to tell me how Simers has gone on Roger Lodge's pathetic excuse for a show and started bad-mouthing Manny again, saying how he doesn't talk to Kemp any more and how he has given up caring in the outfield. *sigh* If I ever go postal, it will be on Simers. What a fuckstick. That's odd, as I re-watched yesterday's game last night, I saw Manny on the bench clowning with all the players, interacting with them, high-fiving...what, Simers, was that just spliced in footage of last season? Was I hallucinating?

These shitbag pot stirrers employed by LA Times are going to put me over the brink, and I'm going to take that Uncle Tomas Roger Lodge with me over it.

Kyle Baker said...

Wait, I'm still missing one beer.

I told yall that was the last math I was going to do this year re: RB's puzzle.

Nostradamus said...

*tries to chug Dusty's last missing beer before he notices*

Josh S. said...

@Dusty, er, Rory B. Bellows, er, Krusty:

The problem with Roger Lodge (other than that he's a gasbag), is that he's employed by the Angels. That means he has to perpetuate this imaginary rivalry between the Angels and Dodgers. All of the Dodgers stories he reads are delivered in the most condescending way possible.

Simers has a serious grudge. If you look at his piece on opening day, he makes a hard left turn in the middle and goes off on a Manny rant, even though Manny's performance on Monday was just fine.

Is there going to be a sitting-around-on-my-day-off-watching-the-Masters thread?

Kyle Baker said...

Good points, Josh. Can we start a pirate radio station to counter this Angels propaganda?

We can get Christian Slater to help.

Kyle Baker said...

How am I supposed to stream both MLB.TV (DET home opener) AND Masters at the same time? (I realize this is a fairly bourgeois conundrum.)

Josh S. said...

Stream the DET game on your iPhone and the Masters on your computer!

Speaking of other games around the league, I may tune in to the Jints opener, hopefully to hear Heyward destroy them. The guy already has the coolest merch!

Kyle Baker said...

For those of you on the very edge of your seat awaiting news of how I solved my bourgeois conundrum:

MLB At Bat on iPhone - DET game
Masters streaming on laptop

I say, old chap. *peers through monocle*

Kyle Baker said...

Josh! Just noted your reply. Had I not lucked into the solution on my own, I would have appreciated your advice.

Blogger comments still blugged up. Josh's reply didn't appear in latest comments but appeared in this thread after I had posted and the page refreshed.

The world will end shortly, I presume.
